  1. Hi, Has anyone made Caleb 144 MB ultra high density floppy drive work in Vista Home Basic? This device has an EIDE-interface, and it is recognized as an IDE device at BIOS level and as LS-120 IDE device in the Device Manager. However, the device is not listed at all in the Explorer. Unfortunately, the Caleb is no longer in business, I think. Thanks.
  2. Hi, I have an Intel-chipset internal PCI modem recognized automatically by Vista Home Basic. I would like to try this modem for fax. Does Home Basic come with fax software? Thanks.
  3. Hi, I am using Vista Home Basic (32-bit). Just today, I have had a blue screen and the system was rebooted by itself. Thinking of possible virus infection, I scanned the entire hard drive using McAfee antivirus but found no virus. Well, how can I trace the blue screen? I mean is it somewhere in the event log? Also, should I back up and reformat and reinstall the vista just to be safe? By the way, I watch out for suspicious sites by not visiting them during my Internet surfing. I mean that I am very cautions in what I do during the surfing. So, where has this virus, if it is indeed, come from? Thanks.
  4. Hi, I thought this error was fixed but it has come back. When synchronizing for Internet time, I am getting the following error: an error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com. I even tried with different locations but all resulted the same with the above error. And, looking at an event viewer, I got the following warning: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client Date: 10/15/2007 15:02:01 Event ID: 1003 Task Category: None Level: Warning Keywords: User: Computer: Description: Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address xxxxxxxxxxxx. Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client" Guid="{15A7A4F8-0072-4EAB-ABAD-F98A4D666AED}" EventSourceName="Dhcp" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1003</EventID> <Version>0</Version> <Level>3</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2007-10-15T22:02:01.000Z" /> <EventRecordID>49656</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="0" ThreadID="0" /> <Channel>System</Channel> <Computer>xxxxxx</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data>004005820154</Data> <Data>%%121</Data> </EventData> </Event> I am behind a router that is connected to a DSL modem, and I have been getting this warning frequently recently. I have tried restarting both the modem and the router but it did not do much. So, I wonder if I have to reset the modem. But, I would like to know why I am running into this rather quite frequently. Thanks.
  5. Hi, Nice photo. I have never seen the inside of a power supply like this. If the fan is all very dusty, so would the inside very much. So, I suppose that I just clean the fan the best I could without taking it out. The two slim gold bars in the photo are the capacitors, right? Now, if I want to get familiar with the electronics basics, should I grab the electronics 101 lab manual or some sort at a local radio shack? Thanks.
  6. Hi, I would like to water clean the power supply fan by removing it from the unit. What cautions do I need to take when opening the power supply unit? Is this easily doable or prohibited for the risks involved? Thanks.
  7. Hi, By the way, can I just clean the drum unit by soaking it in the water, or is this forbidden? Of course, I will thoroughly dry it before use. Thanks.
  8. Hi, Upon system starts/reboots, the internet time synchronizing fails and I would have to manually select another server and resynchronize the system time. The network connection is well established prior to system starts and reboots; so, what causes the sych error, and how can I prevent it? Thanks.
  9. Hi, I am hearing some electrostatic noise from the ibm laptop ac adapter. It is the noise you would hear from some poor radio communication or such when you hold the adapter close to your hear. By the way, the adapter is hot, and I suppose this is normal when it's working, right? And, is the noise normal too? Thanks.
  10. Hi, Yes, I have rebooted, and the replacement adapter is in the slot. And, the device manager shows the replacement adapter with some #2 at the end of the description. Is this normal? I thought the adapter should identify itself without any numbers at the end. I am thinking this may be as the older card and the replacement card have the same chipsets, and the replacement card may pick up an older driver. As a matter of fact, I double checked the replacement adapter's driver, and it appears that the driver is for the replacement adapter. But, how do I ensure that the device manager reports the true replacement adapter, not the older one? Thanks.
  11. Hi, Strangely, the adapter I thought working nicely has just bummed me. And, this one even doesn't have such fancy power saving modes at all. I guess I should try using a different cable or a router port all together. By the way, how do I do the network tracing on this timed out connection error as it occurs? Thanks.
  12. Hi, As I have said in my earlier post, I happen to have another adapter with different brand/chipset, using the same cable on the same router port, and this one appears to work nicely without an issue. Well, I have already contacted both realtek and d-link regarding this issue, but have not heard from them as yet. But, thanks for your attention and effort in assisting me.
  13. Hi, I just tried that but I am still getting the connection timed error during browsing. By the way, your suggestion didn't get rid of the dhcp event warning message above if that was your intention as well. Thanks.
  14. Hi, The exact statement is as follows: Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 004005820154. The following error occurred: The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server. In my home system, the router and computer are turned on about at the same time. So, I think the above is due to the fact that when the computer starts, it tries to contact the router to obtain the dhcp lease from. In fact, I compared the above event time with my connection issue to see any correlation between the two, and unfortunately, they don't match. So, I think my router/dhcp server is not an issue with my connection problem I'm having with. Thanks.
  15. Hi, Well, I am noticing some rare, infrequent dhcp timed out warnings. Other than this, I do not see any connection related errors. By the way, the current dhcp lease is set to just 1 day, and I think this is all right, isn't it? Thanks.
  16. Hi eyeball and icemannd, Thanks for your feedbacks. icemannd, Actually, I have just tried that and that doesn't help.
  17. Hi eyeball, Actually, I have already done that, but refreshing the device manager still brings up the same adapter back again. Thanks.
  18. Hi eyeball, Thanks. I think the issue is related to the realtek rtl8139 chipset because dfe 528tx happens to use this same chipset. Besides, I have, yet, another different brand/chipset adapter, using the same cable, router port, and this one works nicely so far without the symptom. And, if it's indeed a chipset-related issue, I want to know if there's anything I can do to correct the issue. I have looked into the dfe528tx driver.inf file, and have seen so many different parameter values. Perhaps, I could change some of these values and reimport the file into the system registry or something. Then again, I am not an expert on a driver info file and modifying system registry.
  19. Hi icemannd, Thanks. I did a quick google search on this boot rom, but I am not getting any good leads. Conceptually, is boot rom similar to bios? What is boot rom? What (skills) do I need to program this rom or bios for that matter?
  20. Hello? Out of curiosity, what is the 32-pin socket used for on some of the ethernet adapters? Is it for some kind of memory upgrade or something? Thanks.
  21. Hello? I just replaced an ethernet adapter, but the device manager still shows an older adapter even though I uninstalled an older one and refreshed the manager. So, what I did was just updated the new driver (replacement adapter) in the older adapter driver settings. This works fine, but I want to completely remove the older adapter drivers/traces from the system. How can I do this? Thanks.
  22. Hello? Once in a while, I experience some dropped connections on my wired ethernets in XP. Basically, I am getting connection timed out error messages. I have updated drivers and looked into my router settings just to see if there's anything I need to pay attention to; all seems well. So far, I have seen these drops on realtek rtl 8139 and d-link dfe 528tx. How can I further troubleshoot this issue? By the way, when the connection is dropped, simply reloading the current page reestablishes the dropped connection. Thanks.
  23. Hi, It's not muted. But I had to reinstall the entire os the other day. And, this time I made sure the onboard microphone works by configuring it first. Then, I configured the webcam. Now, both the onboard's and webcam's microphones work nicely.
  24. Hello? I'm using XP and trying to make the onboard microphone work. When testing audio device, selecting this onboard microphone doesn't work, but switching to the other built-in microphone on an usb webcam works. Currently, the onboard microphone is connected to a headset's microphone. And, I have asrock p4v88 board. Thanks.
