If you have MSBATCH.INF file in the folder you are installing Windows 98 from you could make following changes to it: Modify the [install] section to include the following line: UpdateInis=Edit.Files And these lines at the end of MSBATCH.INF: [Edit.Files] %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"MaxPhysPage=40000" %10%\system.ini,vcache,,"MaxFileCache=524288" This should get you past Windows 98 installation without having to boot to DOS to edit System.ini or without having to remove RAM modules to get past the "Not enough memory" error. You could also put some other stuff under the [Edit.Files] section... some examples: %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"PagingDrive=C:" %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"PagingFile=C:\PAGEFILE.SYS" %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"MinPagingFileSize=1048576" %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"MaxPagingFileSize=1048576" Forces Windows 98 to create a fixed 1Gt swapfile called PAGEFILE.SYS at the root of C-drive... might be useful when dualbooting with Windows 2000 or XP. %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" Forces Windows 98 to use up all physical RAM before switching to the slower swap file. %30%\msdos.sys,Options,,"Logo=0" Gets rid of the Windows 98 boot logo.

Case Three seems to make sense if you absolutely have to use completely unmodified Windows 98 install CD... however making a slightly modified install CD isn't too complicated and gives much nicer end result as you don't have to do anything you wouldn’t normally do during windows installation. Here is a rough step-by-step guide: 1) Copy the contents of your Windows 98 install CD to a folder in your HDD. (Let's use D:\98CD\ as an example.) 2) Extract the contents of BHDD31.ZIP to D:\98CD\Win98. (Extracting !read.me, _bighdd.inf, _install.bat and xxFiles.txt isn't necessary.) 3) Extract the boot sector from the original install CD using IsoBuster or UltraISO. 4) Burn the contents of D:\98CD\ to CD or CD-R with your favorite CD burning program. (Don't forget to make your CD bootable with the boot sector you just extracted!) 5) Partition and format the HDD with The Ranish Partition Manager. 6) Install Windows 98 from CD like you would normally do. 7) Get back to Win 9x and enjoy it! I installed Windows 98 on a computer that has 300GB HDD with a modified install CD-R earlier today and updated versions of ADVPACK.DLL, CVTAPLOG.EXE, DEFRAG.EXE, DSKMAINT.DLL, ESDI_506.PDR, FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM, SCANDISK.EXE, SCANDSKW.EXE, W95INF16.DLL and W95INF32.DLL were installed automatically during Windows installation and I didn't have to reboot to DOS prompt in middle of Windows installation.

Why would you go through all that when you can just put the extracted ESDI_506.PDR file to the folder where you are going to install Windows 98 from? I just did this and the updated ESDI_506.PDR file was copied to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS during normal Windows install without any unnecessary reboots or DOS diskettes...

Well, I tried ntdll.dll from XP SP2 and got blue screen of death on windows boot-up... any other ideas?

Instead of making another topic about trying to get certain games working on Windows 2000 I'm just going to use this one for my question... When trying to play Bionic Commando:Rearmed I'll get one of following errors: The procedure entry point RtlActivateActivationContextUnsafeFast could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll. or The procedure entry point CsrGetProcessId could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll. None of the "dll wrappers" seem to have anything to do with ntdll.dll and I haven't found any workaround yet... any ideas?

Well, it's easy to get most "XP only" software working on Windows 2000 by putting the .dlls and other files to the programs own folder like fdv said but newer games are usually impossible to get working on Windows 2000... Here is an example: I think this error message would say "The procedure entry point AddVectoredExceptionHandler could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL" in english. This game uses a kernel function that only exist in XP, 2003 and Vista: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms679274.aspx Personaly I like to use Windows 2000 as my OS but things like this forces me to use XP or server 2003 (at least for gaming)... I'd love to see a KernelEx project for Windows 2000... Windows 2000 with server 2003 kernel would be the best Windows OS ever!

I changed the TimeZone= parameter from "Finland" to "Mountain" and the Date/Time Properties Dialog box didn't show up... THANKS! My install is now completely unattended except for it asking for monitor.inf when booting to the desktop for the first time but this can be avoided by having your monitor turned off at this stage. Now I need to think of a way to install to install programs during OS-install... unfortunately I'm not very familiar with .inf files: Can someone show me an example of calling a .bat or .inf file from .inf file?

Importing this registry entry during installation seems to get rid of the logon screen when booting to the desktop for the first time: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net] "AutoLogon"=hex:00 About the Date and Time Properties Dialog Box: I tried OptionalComponents and NoPrompt2Boot with 0s and 1s... I didn't see any difference at all. Do these parameters actually do anything? Anyway the Date and Time Properties Dialog Box allways appears at the end of installation ruining my otherwise unattended install... any ideas how to get past it?

I have already made a perfectly working unattended install DVD for Windows 2000/XP/2003 and I'm now trying to make one for 9x OSses. 1. Is it possible to it make so that when you boot your computer using CD/DVD made with cdshell/cdimage it wouldn't load that blue picture that says cdshell and would go directly to "press enter to boot from CD"? That picture load very slowly on some computers... 2. Is there any way that you can prevent having all filenames and folder IN ALL CAPS? Obiously not a problem but kind of annoying when browsing the CD/DVD after install...

Apparently it was a bad burn... I just made the DVD again with cdimage/cdshell combo yesterday and it worked perfectly allthough it was made in exact same way...

Question about Easyboot: Is there a way to change the "root of CD/DVD" directory from C:\EasyBoot\disk1 to something else?

I hate to create a new topic but since I cannot get CDShell to work on real world computers due to mysterious "boot error" that I describe here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=109750 Are there some good alternatives to CDShell? Following features are needed: - "Optimized iso" to save space and to be able to put more stuff in - Similar editable menu for OSses that needs you to press some button to show, so after starting an installation process it goes past the menu without user interaction so it is completely unattended after choosing partition and file system instead of just showing the menu... Following are preferable but not necassary: - Relatively easy to use - FREE All suggestions are welcome!
