  1. Well, I broke it. Yesterday I knocked over my computer and I believe that the two pound Scythe Infinity has cracked my motherboard. Green light on board, no hd activity, removed video card, hard drives, memory, CPU - no beeps. The next question is what to get to replace the Asus P5W-DH-Delux, should I get the same thing or something more recent and if I do change the motherboard am I going to have to reactivate windows. I'm in kind of a hurry here because by backup computer is waiting for a replacement HD from Western Digital and I'm stuck using a PII 400Mhz. From 3400 down to 400 is quite a slowdown. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  2. I agree that WesternDigital JB drives are crap, I have a two year old WD800-JB that they are replacing this week.
  3. Well watch your temp's when you overclock, the Q6600 has a TDP of 105 W vs the E6600 I have with a TDP of 65 W. With my overclock to 3.4GHZ I'm just about at you stock TDP and with my Scythe Infinity with dual 84 cfm fans running full speed my cores idle at 48ºC, 55º gaming and 60º TAT 15 minutes. Oops, now I see - G0 stepping TDP of only 95W.
  4. ripken204, What are you getting for CPU cooling? All I saw was that in your second post you mentioned somthing about water.
  5. A woman, standing nude, looks in the bedroom mirror and says to her husband, "I feel horrible, I look fat and ugly. Pay me a compliment." The husband replies, "Your eyesight's dam* near perfect." He never heard the shot...
  6. Yes, it answered my question, it was a hardware problem. It's been a bad weekend for me and computers. On my backup computer, a PIII-600, it looks like the hard drive is failing, the 2.5 year old WD800JB 80G hard drive locks up 3 out of 4 times while booting into Windows and WD's Datalifeguard does not recognize it as a Western Digital drive. It's a good thing it's a dual boot system the other two 10G Maxtors still work fine and I can boot from them. My next spare is a PII-400 and I don't want to go there!
  7. Never mind, the card died. RMA to Newegg. no video during boot and no beeps, no video at all. But beeps with no video card installed.
  8. I saw the Zalman, but I was really looking for a cooler that would exhaust the hot air out the back of my PC. somthing like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835110015 SmaugyGrr: I might take it apart this weekend, as I do have a spare 80mm fan and maybe just mount the 80mm to blow into the fan intake so I will still have cooling if the other fan fails to start. At least untill I get another cooler.
  9. The fan on my Sapphire X1950XT has had a habit lately of not starting, although still under warrantee, I was considering upgrading the cooling anyway. I have Googled for GPU cooler reviews but I can’t seem to find anything newer than a year old. What I am looking for is something that will exhaust out of the back of my PC And be more reliable and possibly quieter than the stock cooler. I would appreciate it if you had any recommendations, or know of any recent reviews. Thanks, RJM
  10. Labview, IBM PC assembly, basic, dos. The ones I dont use anymore, or much - Fortran II, Fortran IV, Fortran 76, APL, PL1, Focal, DEC PDP-8 assembly, DEC - snowbol (like Cobol), Pascal, Lisp, RDOS (Data General), Focus. I guess I am old.
  11. I have been having a problem lately with the AtiTool .26. Before gaming I start up the AtiTool which I have set to set my fan speeds from 50% at 50C to 100% at 60C and with the X1950XT you can hear the fans when you start the AtiTool. Twice last week the fans did not start up, so I went into the fan control section of the tool and the fan speed was 0% and grayed out but all my settings for fan speed and temperature were still there. The first time I had to reboot my computer once for the fans to work with the AtiTool. The next time I had to reboot it twice. I thought it was the drivers that I was using because I had just installed the DNA drivers based on the ATI 7.5's. last weekend and was going to install the ATI 7.7's this weekend. Then I saw this over at Tom’s Hardware. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/243902-3...g-crash-atitool Have any of you seen this problem?
  12. Maybe, through compatibility libraries, I found this back in May. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=96961 These libraries allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Windows Vista, and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it. No longer will you have to upgrade your OS and video card(s) to play the latest games. http://alkyproject.blogspot.com/
  13. Try this: Press and hold the OSD menu key for about 10 seconds until picture displays "OSD MAIN MENU UNLOCKED"
  14. You could zip them first and just have 1 large file that would transfer quickly.
  15. Well, the file system has to update the file allocation table on the flash drive each time it writes a file and this can take a lot longer than just writing say a 4K file because the system has to read the file allocation file from the flash drive, update it and then replace it. It only has to do this once for one large file instead of a thousand times for 1000 4K files. This process of reading and writing files is directed through a hard drive's file allocation table, which determines the physical starting location of a file, and records chains of data that describe the locations of all files on the platters. This file allocation table is also referred to when the system attempts to write new files to a platter, as it keeps track of available space as well as space already in use.
  16. Original post, but the link is down http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=72503 original video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9pgOmlHE2k
  17. There is always Fed-Ex overnight. Just a thought. Less chance of it getting lost, if it is too big for carry-on.
  18. Or I could just go back to the stock frequency 2.4Ghz and drop my Vcore from 1.35V on this 6 month old system (see sig.) but my temps are not that bad. Measured with core temp Idle 52C logged during gaming 60C max, TAT 15 minutes 67C. I thought Replacing the 46.5 CFM fan that came with the Scythe Infinity with two 83 CFM fans in a push pull arangement with a fan controler would alow me to ballance my noise level and temperature at considerably less expense than buying a new computer. Anyway, my original question about NMB fans seems to be answered, and UPS will be delivering two tomorrow. Thanks for your input. Another thought about temperatures, from Tom's Hardware's sticky on Core2 Duo Temperature guide. http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/Co...pict221745.html Core temp is always 15C higher that Tcase, Tcase is always higher than the temperature inside your box, and the temperature inside your box is always higher than the ambient temperature. 28C for me. I'm just trying to get the temperature delta from idle to load down, I have already reduced the load temperature by 6C switching to the Scythe Infinity from the ArticFreezer 7 Pro.
  19. With any luck if I install two of them maybe they will drown out the noise from the fan on my Sapphire X1950XT. And I have enough spare parts to build a nice little switching regulator for fan speed control.
  20. Ah, formally Panasonic. I guess I’ll try 2 of them. Link to NMB data sheet. http://www.elma.com/StaticPages/BinaryFile...0NL-04W-B40.pdf Panasonic Industrial is no longer directly involved with axial fans and stepping motors. Rather, Matsus***a (Panasonic) and Minebea (NMB) have formed a joint venture called Minebea-Matsus***a Motor Company (MMMC) to handle both fans and stepping motors. MMMC has elected to concentrate sales and marketing effort related to these products through NMB. Looks like you can't spell Mat-sushi-ta here.
  21. Well, summer has come to Florida and as the temperatures rise I see the load temps In my PC (see sig.) also rise. So I was thinking of upgrading the fan on my Scythe Infinity to two Thermaltake A1280’s – push pull. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811999113 This seemed like quite a lot for two fans with shipping. So wit not much else to do today, I remembered a company I had bought surplus equipment from years ago and decided to Look them up on the WEB and see what they had for 120mm fans. This is what I found. NMB 4710-04W-B40 120mm 38 dBA. 83 CFM. $4.50 Ea $7.00 Shipping total. http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item...LING_FAN_.html# I was wondering if anyone had any experience with NMB fans, it looks like a good one And after a quick search on Froogle. http://www.google.com/products?q=NMB+Model...=en&show=dd JPCparts wants quite a bit for them. What’s your opinion should I go for Thermaltake or NMB?
  22. Another thread searching for HP a510N power supplies. http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-s...wer-supply.html
  23. I had a HP tower due that about 5 years ago, the power supply flashes when it goes into protection mode. Lousy little power supply, it was a micro-ATX rated at 115 watts.
  24. An errant update for Norton Antivirus has caused the computers of at least 1,000 users in a China city to crash, several Chinese news sources reported on Monday. According to authorities, the problem was caused by an update on May 18 that accidentally flagged and deleted two essential Windows XP files, causing the system to lock up -- showing the "blue screen of death" -- and fail to reboot. Experts say that both the traditional and simplified Chinese versions of the Symantec software are affected. The company confirmed that it was aware of the problem and is currently looking into a solution, although no time frame has been given http://www.betanews.com/article/Norton_Upd...hina/1179784419
