1. Thanks allen2 for your support, but I could not understand you. By suggesting that I use NTFS4DOS are you saying that I can't have NTFSDOS work the way I want? After you suggested NTFS4DOS I tried it but it even hasn't support for long file names, like NTFSDOS has. And, if as you say shouldn't it work with my floppy, as I have the portuguese codes?Thank you.
2. I am trying to save a friend's old notebook that no longer boots into XP. His first request was to recover some precious documents. His notebook hasn't CD driver and is formatted with NTFS file system. So, I boot from a floppy. Then, because of the NTFS system, I load this trully lifesaver which is NTFSDOS, from sysinternals, which was put in the floppy. And the best thing is that this jewell can read long file names, not just those mydocu~1 DOS names. With it I can read the hard drive. Then, I copy all the documents he wants to the second partition, because I want to format the primary partition. The real problem is that this is a portuguese computer and his documents names have portuguese characters, like ã, é, ê and they are not recognized. When I type dir I can see the file names but not the correct portuguese names. I have searched the net before posting, and it could be a problem with the settings of the keyboard, so it could be solved by changing the codes in the CONFIG.SYS to reflect my regional settings: 351 for country code, po for keyboard code and 850 for character set. I have this in my config.sys With this config.sys the portuguese keyboard is recognized and I can type in the command line portuguese characters, but the file names continue to not be recognized. Can anyone help? Thank you, JS
3. Ntfsdos is free. Only NTFSDOS Professional Edition is not free.
4. Hurray!! SimonSays's Firefox_Silent_Setup still works with Firefox 2! And perfectly! It install extensions, searchplugins, profile and plugins without failure. And even better. One can choose or modify the default installation directory of Firefox. How? Well, if you extract Firefox original install file, which is a 7z file, you will find that inside it there is a setup.exe. This is a nullsoft installer. So, after following SimonSays guide, you just have to open setup.cmd that is inside Firefox_Silent_Setup. Then, replace this line:
"%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Firefox\setup.exe" -ms
for this
"%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Firefox\setup.exe" /S /D=%PROGRAMFILES%\Net\Mozilla Firefox
(this is just an example - after that /D you can choose whatever path you want). Then, in the same setup.cmd replace all this entries:
%SHORTPF%\MOZILL~1
for this (accordingly to whatever path you have choosen):
%SHORTPF%\Net\MOZILL~1
And replace all
%PROGRAMFILES%\Mozilla Firefox
for
%PROGRAMFILES%\Net\Mozilla Firefox
This replacements can be easily done with notepad. --------------------------------------------- As I don't want to install Talkback, which is installed by default, I have managed to get rid of it. How? Extract the original Firefox installation file and remove the directory under /optional/extensions. Then compress it again. 5.
but one more stupid thing, how to disable the association with Playlists?! I'm using MPC only for Videos, Winamp for sure for Audio files
Try this: /unregaud Like this
Setup="%programfiles%\Wesmosis\mplayerc.exe" /regvid /unregaud
6. Here you have: Just replace XXX for the extension you want to associate VLC to. For a .reg file see here: Videolan forum 1 and Videolan forum 2
7. That is a known topic. See this: Edit Wordpad Hope that helps
8. In Portugal. Actually it is not for me but for a close relative that works there. You see, that's why the price is in €€, so, if you live in California, it will be of no use for you.
9. Hello, I have under my eyes a laptop Amd Turion 64 1.8GHz; - 1GB memory - 7300 GE force Go 256 MB 80 GB hard drive for about € 1000. Is this a good buy? How long do you thing it can last? Please give me your opinions.
10. Just read the "changelog.txt" that is inside the rar file in here (post 599). You can include Flash dll in the Plugin directory. By the way I am still using this nice piece of code to install my Firefox v1.5. Thank you SiMoNsAyS
11. Well, I think I have got it. Thumbnail View [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\1\Shell] "Vid"="{8BEBB290-52D0-11D0-B7F4-00C04FD706EC}" Tile View [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\1\Shell] "Vid"="{65F125E5-7BE1-4810-BA9D-D271C8432CE3}" Icon View [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\1\Shell] "Vid"="{0057D0E0-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}" List View [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\1\Shell] "Vid"="{0E1FA5E0-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}" Detail View Notes: 1- It seems that you can apply these tweaks only when logged on. Otherwise they won't stick. 2- That "1" after "Bags" is not always 1. If you open first Windows Explorer, 1 will be Windows Explorer and you will be applying the view to Explorer. If you open Control Panel after opening Windows Explorer, Control Panel will be 2. I solved that by, after first logon, opening and closing Control Panel and then aplying the view I want, all this with an Autoit Script. That way I know Control Panel will be 1 (I am ashame of my autoit script because of it's poor quality, so I wont post it). 3- I don't know why, but I have to open and close Control Panel twice so that the tweak get's applyed. I hope someone can explain that to me. 4- Miniature View and Mosaic View possibly are not the names of the views in an english OS, but I don't know that. I translated it. Now it's ok - Thanks to mandrke. 5- You have two ways of applying Classic Control View: I use "shell:controlpanelfolder" because that way one can allways choose category view. 5- Finally, it works perfecly for me. I hope that this helps someone
12. No, that's not what we want. Thats for Classic View of Control Panel. We want to change a Classic Control Panel to Icon view. If you're using rehgshot or any similar tool, you have to select "Apply to all folders" in tools, folder options, display when changing view. Otherwise it only gets applied to the current window (when it does). But that's exactly what I want. I have list view in Windows Explorer and I want Icon view in Control Panel
13. I have used regshot but with no luck.
14. I think you have no luck: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=38289&hl=
15. Hello, Can someone help me with this two difficulties, please? 1 - I am trying to automate the creation of my unattended cd with CDImageGui. So I remembered to use Autoit. I am using ControlCommand to give the orders, just like I do to automate the installation of a program. The problem is that "Autoit Window Info" does not show the ControlID or the ClassNameNN of the individual buttons of CDImageGui, so I don't know how to do it. On the left panel of CDImageGui I wanted to click on "Creation" button, then "Start Image Creation" button. I don't know how, but I managed to select the "Creation" button with this code: Run("D:\Unattended\CDIMAGE\cdimagegui.exe") WinWait("CDImage GUI Beta 3 by CyBerian","Directory Configurat") ControlCommand("CDImage GUI Beta 3 by CyBerian", "Directory Configuration", "TFEGXOutlookBar1", "Check", "") WinWait("CDImage GUI Beta 3 by CyBerian","Start the Image Creation") "TFEGXOutlookBar1" is the ClassNameNN that "Autoit Window Info" shows for all the left panel. I don't know why, but it manages to choose "Creation" button, which is exactly what I want. Now I just miss the "Start Image Creation" button. 2- This second doubt shows all my ignorance with Autoit. I use MS Virtual PC to test my unattended cds. When I try a new iso I have to delete the old Virtual PC files. So I want Autoit to delete those files, but showing first a warning. MsgBox(4096+1, "Attention!", "This will delete some files") This code shows a window with 2 buttons: OK and Cancel. How can I continue the script if I click OK and exit if I click Cancel? Thank you PS. - Well, I partially solved the second one through here Now I just have to understand how do I click ok and execute the rest of the script
16. I have installed VBRun60.exe so that can't be the problem. I followed your suggestion, but it did not work. But I am now a step closer. I used one of the resolutions suggested by Microsoft to solve the know bug with Visual Basic and edited accordingly the Setup.lst file. So I managed to install the program. But when I ran it, it said comct232.ocx was not registered. So I registered it. Finally the program starts. But then it gives an error message stating: Run-time error '53 - File not found. I googled for that error and it seems that is related with a missing Visual Basic file. Could you guys try and install the program in a virtual computer and tell me if you encounter the same error, please? Thank you
17. I have found this program - Webshots Photo Downloader - and I was trying to test it, but I can't install it. From the error message presented during installation I found out the possible solution for it. It is as error related with Microsoft Visual Basic: Possible solution I am trying all the possible solutions suggested by Microsoft. But I ask you guys to try and install this little program and see if it works for you. I would appreciate your help. Thank you, JS Edit: Edited Topic Title and Description - Gouki
18. If this doesn't work for you, try: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pdf] @="FoxitReader.Document" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\FoxitReader.Document] "BrowseInPlace"="1" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pdf] "Application"=- "Progid"="FoxitReader.Document" PS - I tried this having Adobe Reader installed first and it worked
19. Hello. I have formatted my computer and installed Media Player Classic 6.4.8.7. It also has installed Windows Media Player 7. The first time I played a .wmv file with WMP it downloaded a codec and read the file. But MPC still can't read it, giving this message: "failed to render the file". From the searches I made, I know this has to do with the codec, but if WMP can read it so should MPC too. I could install Windows Media Lite, but it has a warning saying: Do not install Windows Media Lite if Windows Media Player is installed. I have found in this forum similar problems (MPC not playing .wmv files), but always when WMP is not installed, mostly due to nlited installations. Can someone help me, please? Thanks
20. Success! Thank you all. Thanks specially to jaclaz Just read your posts and http://thpc.info/dualboot.html Created a new bootsect.dos with their utility, corrected my boot.ini, typed fixboot at the recovery console and voila. And most important, learned something new. It's just a pitty that when I googled for "dual boot", that site didn't came as the first hit. Once again, thanks.
21. Atomizer, Yes, there was a typo. I edited the post and corrected it. Thanks. Sorry, but why D:, if I have Windows 98 installed on C:, which is the firts partition of the first hard disk?
22. Thanks for your precious help, guys. With your help, the XP Cd that I finaly could get from home and this post: Unable to boot Windows I managed to get XP back. But I lost Windows 98 boot. What I did: 1- Copied ntldr and ntdetect.com from a computer with XP installed and copied them to C: (where I have windows 98 installed) 2- Created boot.ini from atomizer post, like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows 98" /fastdetect »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»Edited because of a typo««««««««««««««««««««««« 3- Executed Recovery Console and typed "bootcfg /rebuid" & "fixboot". I did not execute fixmbr because it showed a frighting warning When I restarted the computer it showed the two choices. When I choose Windows XP it started normaly. But when I choose Windows 98 it gave me a message saying that a file called hal.dll was missing in \Windows\System32. So I booted XP, copied hall.dll from XP partition to 98 partition. Restarted computer and tried again to choose again 98. It gave me a message that ntoskrnl.exe was missing in \Windows\System32. So I booted XP, copied ntoskrnl.exe from XP partition to 98 partition. Restarted computer and tried again to choose again 98. It gave me a general error, telling me to contact support. So I ask: how can I boot Windows 98?
23. I don't have XP here with me, just the 98 CD. And I also can't boot into XP. Aren't there any tools that I can grabe from internet and use?
24. Hi, I was experimenting, but clearly my knwolegde is not enough to do it. I have two hard-drives. On drive 1 I had installed Windows 98 - C: (fat 32) On drive 2 I had installed XP - H: (NTFS) As I installed XP after 98, XP installed a boot selector which allowed me to select the OS. Now I decided to format C: and re-install 98. The result is that 98 installed it's own boot loader that does not recognize XP (now I know all this because after the desaster I googled for it). How can I have back the boot selector that allows me to choose between 98 and XP without having to re-install XP? I searched the web but there is so many information that I couldnt find a clear walkthrough. Thanks.
25. This is an already discussed and searchable topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=37949&hl= Hope it helps.
