  1. IE seems okay, though I never used it and deleted the shortcuts. I found it at c:\winnt\system32\dllcache\iexplore.exe That runs and reports itself as version 6.0.2800.1106 Is that correct? No right-click problems I can find.
  2. Attached "UURollup-10.log", and also for 9b. Lots of errors in that, but I think they're all about devices I don't have. The WinUpdatelist is pretty simple: 5.1, UU9b, UU10 I tried to start Tapin before I ran tasklist, so its process is listed. In Process Explorer, the "Window" option is unavailable for Tapin, so it never gets to the stage of creating one. Thanks for looking at this. logs.rar
  3. The icon thing isn't related to Ultraedit. If I change any association to any other app, I get the same white folder icon with the empty box inside. For instance, Irfanview had taken over the .psd extension when I installed it. So I changed that back to Photoshop, and now these open with Photoshop, but now they have the white folder icon, not the Photoshop (or Irfanview) one. Seems any manual change to icons has this result. Well, good thing I have extensions shown, it seems icons are screwed up for me now. Is 32 colours set by "Show icons using all possible colours" on desktop properties? I've tried it both on and off. Same result. As for Tapin, that's sort of encouraging you can get it working, but I still can't. The process starts, (I can see it in Process Explorer), but then just stalls, never opens a window. I've reinstalled and still no go. I'll try the portable version and see if that works. (I can use other Radio apps, but Tapin is my favourite, as its list of stations is updated every week. Other apps work, but their station lists are very stale and mostly dead.) -- Just tried the portable Tapin install. Still fails to launch. In Process Explorer, if I try to look at Tapin's "threads", Process Explorer itself locks up and I have to kill it.
  4. Did all that. Now instead of plain white icons, I have white icons with a black outline, and a transparent hole in the middle. So at least I can see where it is. After UU10 all the icon colours were weird, but I did a rebuild icons from TweakUI and that made the others normal. One weird thing -- I reverted the association for txt to notepad, and then they all had the "UE" icon, even though they opened with notepad. I changed it back to UE and then I got back the same white icon. But a serious (for me) side effect of UU10: It broke Tapin Radio, something I use all day long. Now it won't launch. I was going to report that at the RyyanVM board, but you have to be approved before you can post there.
  5. 9b I was intending waiting till your 5.2 was stable before doing more rollups though. Do you think UU 10 would fix this? I tried "Iconphile" which lets you change icons for apps and associations; though I could choose the correct icon it did not affect what Explorer showed. No change.
  6. Not quite. No shadow or underline. Just a plain white rectangle with one corner cut. So invisible on a white background. See below. There is no "Change icon" option for these. Only "Restore", which puts the association back to Notepad. See screencap. The file "D4history.txt" shows the icon that I have now for txt files. Just a blank, white rectangle. AVS is Avisynth; actually the type was created when I installed that, with the default app Windows Media Player, which I change to VirtualDubMod. There is no problem with default associations. Of course I don't expect the Registry to update itself. That's why I asked how to do it. Plenty of apps can be simply installed by copying and work. with a bit of tweaking; that's what "portable" apps are. I do it for some apps to preserve my settings from an archived version. This is the first time I've had the problem with icons, having done it many times before.
  7. Using Win2k, SP5.1 There are some filetypes where everything works, if I click on the icon the appropriate program opens, but the icon is a blank, not the image from the associated program. This happens to me for two filetypes. One is .txt. I installed Ultraedit, then used Folder options/filetypes to select Ultraedit to be the default for .txt. But in an Explorer window now text files are blank boxes. Similarly for a video app I associated with .avs files. It may be related to the way I installed these programs, simply by copying a folder to the Program files directly, then making some shortcuts for the start menus. The programs run as normal, but -- no icons on their files. Where are the icons actually defined? A registry entry that I can edit?
  8. I have a PC with an ASUS A7S333 mobo. it claims compatibility with DDR333 RAM I have a spare stick of 512MB DDR400 PC2300 RAM. Is that compatible? At least, is there any risk to the RAM and/or mobo in trying it?
  9. I went ahead with SP5.1, and the symptoms are gone. I can drag icons and Add/Remove Programs is working. Thanks. I remain suspicious of what happened and why. I was looking at Process Explorer to see what was going on. One thing was that every time I started the (Java) Kindle Previewer, it would crash, but leave a 40 MB process in memory, apparently doing nothing. Which I killed, but maybe it did some damage. Unfortunately, I really need that, so I have to try again, I had it working in Win2k without any problem before. I used Win98 for years, installed Win2k over that in 2005, used that for about 7 years until my computer literally blew up, and I did a clean install of SP4 on a new disk a couple of weeks ago. I thought I'd have a nice clean stable system, but I've had weird stuff going on. Maybe it's because I had applied numerous patches and fixes over the years and forgot the details. Anyway, fingers crossed, thanks again.. I'll do your rollup 10 if things hang together. -- Cool, the Kindle Previewer runs normally now too. I was thinking dark thoughts of how I'd finally have to move my desktop to XP. Can put that off for a while.
  10. Thanks, i did the IE6 update. Still can't drag icons, and Add/remove is still empty. Do you really recommend the SP5.1? Will that work on top of the UUrollup? I've tried active desktop off and on, previously it was off and no issues.
  11. On the Windows 2000 desktop I can't drag any icons to move them or drop on other icons. I can click the desktop and "arrange icons" and choose any method (name, date, etc) and it will do that, but I can't move them myself by dragging. "Auto arrange" is NOT ticked. I can open a folder and drag that around, or any program window, but I can't drag any file or folder icons inside it. I can r-click to create a folder or shortcut. I can select any icon and delete it. Just can't move the **** things. Just ran the "Windows2000-UURollup" 9b, but I have installed that on another PC recently with no such problem. PS: booted in safe mode, still can't move icons. Now something else -- opening the control panel "Add/remove programs" does not display a list of programs. Just an empty box I've spent a while today trying to get a Java program running -- Kindle previewer. I installed and uninstalled it, and Java, a few times. So it looks like I've damaged Windows in the process. Thanks Amazon. I've got an SP4 install disk, can I use that to repair install? Never done that before, so excuse the naivety. If it will work and preferably leave my apps installed I will give it a try.
  12. Look, while I'm grateful for the attempt to help, there is no need to be so accusatory about this. I just read the 2005 "update" page completely, again, and nowhere does it say you need to have installed an earlier version. (Probably it is on a linked page, but there isn't anything on that page.) Usually an "updated" version is just the latest version, replacing a previous version. When it failed I went to the UU package, which I'd downloaded in the meantime, since I wanted to try that anyway, for all the other updates it bundles, and as that worked I didn't bother trying to work out what the problem was with the 2005 package/update. Yes, I did actually read, and maybe even understand, what the UUP was before I installed it. As for "What Others Are Downloading", it looks like some kind of social media thing. ("Your friends are getting these files!) Most of the links there are irrelevant. Again, you know which one isn't because you already knew where it was. Obviously I'm not familiar with how MS organises and presents its files, that's why I came here and asked the question, but I'm not a stupid or lazy just because I don't know exactly what I need to search for and where it is before I start. Maybe you should leave questions like this to someone with more patience.
  13. Recent versions of the K-Lite codec installer have dropped support for Win2k. See http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm Old versions are available at http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_mega_codec/history/ It's a fairly intensive install, so I haven't experimented much to find the absolute latest version that runs. Currently using version 6.7, released: 29 Dec 2010. Has anyone used a later version on Win2k? I checked CCCP, http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page their last Win2k version was 2010-10-10 I see a pattern forming.... (Please, no lectures about how only idiots use codec packs, I'm not interested in arguing about that.)
  14. Tried these, fairly small exes. The VC 2008 redistributable worked, but the actual dll I needed wasn't there. The VC 2005 installer aborts with "error 1723" which is vaguely defined as "missing dll", without specifying which one it needs. So I tried the UUrollup, and that worked 100% and now I can run VirtualDub again.
  15. Thanks for both responses. My search terms weren't as precise. And UUrollup looks perfect for my needs. I have been contemplating moving to XP, but with that I can put it off for a while longer.
  16. I tried those searches. No luck . Ever file you search for is used as bait to send you to some garbage SEO site. And I'm sure it is at MS, but their search is full of articles with useless advice "reinstall the application", etc. I could find copies of the files somewhere, but I was hoping for something someone can recommend
  17. Ive got a new install of Win2k, discovering lots of things it needs to run my programs. One are the various VB runtime dlls, like msvcp80.dll What is the cleanest way to get the latest versions of all these (all up to VB8 at least) installed? Google gives me a million dubious "DLL download" sites, and Microsoft's site is a maze.
  18. Thanks, one extended it is then. Actually, my last, and first, install of Win2k was about 2005 and was laid low only when the power supply exploded. Never had to repair it at all. But it would be sensible nonetheless, of course. It was probably getting pretty crufty.
  19. So far, so good. Created a 32 GB partition with GParted, installed Win2k in it, applied SP4, did the reg hack. Now, to partition the rest of the disk. What I want is to add one 40 GB and two 80 GB partitions. With GParted I can do this it seems by adding 3 primary partitions. Or I can make one extended partition 200 GB, and 3 logical ones in that. Are both compatible with Win2k? Which setup would be best for Win2k? After having to start from scratch once due to its problems with big disks, I don't want to make another mistake.
  20. I found this page: Installing Windows/Linux on a Hard Drive Larger than 136 GB which has what looks like an easy solution: Trying that now.
  21. Well, then you have NO 48 bit LBA access (and you are prone to all kinds of related problems): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305098 The best choiice IMHO is to create an integrated SP4 2K cd and re-do form start the install. jaclaz Hmm. So Win2k chokes at 137 GB. There was some weirdness when I did the initial format. I wanted to make 4 partitions, but from the CD could only make two. So I installed and made the rest using Win2k Disk Management. Thus sealing my own doom.... It's not easy to make slipstreamed CD in my current state of disarray. I don't have CD burners n any working machines. Would just plugging the hard disk into an XP SP3 PC and using its Disk Management to format it with 40 and 80 GB partitions make a Win2k-friendly disk? Or would a recent version of GParted be equally good? I've got Parted Magic, 2009. The disk was made in 2006, it seems, so it should be current enough. I just hope the PC BIOS is -- but it detects the full correct size at least. I've got some software that works well in 2k, but may not do so in XP. So I'm hoping to stick with 2K if at all possible.
  22. The Win2k boot/install CD was the first release, and that's what I used to do the initial partition/install. I applied SP4 after installing. The drive was new and unused, but old stock. Samsung SP2514N I've got another PC running XP that I can try the drives in. Maybe tonight. I think the drives are good. But need to work out if the problem is the mobo or hopefully just the software. Should I try the latest Parted Magic? I'll see if Samsung has any tools for download.
  23. Power supply blew up, replaced. Seemed okay for a few hours, but then weird errors with the hard disk failing to read, and finally failing to boot. So I bought a new hard disk, thinking the old one had been damaged. Installed and partitioned (using the Windows 2000 install disk -- that's what I run) and then started copying files. Set it up with a 40 GB C: drive , then 40GB D: for programs, then two 78 GB, total 232 GB. A few hours later, suddenly the D: drive is gone. Open Disk Management, and E and F are also gone. After I'd just copied 30 GB of files to them. I booted up with the "PartedMagic" CD - a Linux with GParted. It said the whole 232 GB disk was "unallocated". But if I reboot, the C: drive at least is there and bootable to Windows. This is a brand new disk, I think it's okay. The "SMART" health check says "Passed". Is Win2k unable to format 232 GB? Should I just start again using GParted to partition and format? I've got an XP PC I could try. Or is it a mobo problem?
  24. Connected the drives, killed a fatted calf, threw salt over my shoulder, and booted up. Have now been formatting my new hard disk and copying files to it for the last hour. Bullet dodged. And the lesson learnt is: the only safe power off is the air gap. Pull the plug out before messing with the mother board.
  25. Thanks. Yeah, it's old. But cash is tight. Backups on DVD and flash drives. I was plugging in the old hard disk, on the secondary IDE with the optical drive, to try copying files back. I noticed that that had a plain 40 wire IDE cable, thought I might as well upgrade that to an 80 wire as I had one spare. Yeah, "if it ain't broke". Anyway, will cross my fingers and see how it is tomorrow.
