  1. I am setting up a new vista system for someone and they have an old parellel port printer that they wanted me to try and make work. Are there any parellel to USB or firewire cables that might work? I have my doubts, but someone here probably knows for sure. The printer is a Canon BJC-80. Thanks
  2. I used you ini file to question the placement of your swapfile. As long as it is on a different disk, it may give you some performance improement depending on the speed of the file transfer of that drive. One caveat of having one of those larger hard drives is that they are much faster at doing things like defragiing the drive. Going from a 5200 rpm 2MB cache HD to a 7200 rpm 8MB cache HD is almost like getting a new system. Some good information here about trying to solve defrag problems if you have not already tried all of these: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.p...ff63b2bf5d8fa42 I am not an expert on system.ini, but my guess is that the system uses a different one for Safe mode than normal mode which would point ot that file not being the cause of your problem.
  3. More info on your system specs: Amount of ram Hard drive size/usage/partitions/DMA I see your swap file is on drive D. Is this another partition or a second drive? If another partition, you are doing yourself no good. My swap file is on drive C with a minimum of 20MB and NO maximum. I have 256 of ram and use the WinME defrag exe. When I go to defrag, I disable the swap file and reboot and do the defrag. I then re-enable the swap file so as to get a fresh one. If your drive you are trying to defrag is large, it is going to take awhile. The partial restarts you are seeing are not that uncommon. I keep the operating system and heavily used apps on the C drive and other apps and documents on other partitions. Makes for easier disk maintenance and backups.

    DSL internet

Hey thanks everyone, I have all the software protection mentioned already. Now my biggest concern is that it seems (no one can give me a straight answer) that I might need to pay for an ISP in addition to paying for the DSL. That would pretty much squash any kind of savings I might have gotten going from Charter cable to Qwest DSL.

    DSL internet

I am thinking about stopping my cable internet connection due to high cost. I can have a DSL connection that has download speeds of up to 7 Meg. Right now I am connected at 5 Meg with no problems. Any advice anyone could give me while making the switch would be appreciated. I know about all the websites for tweaking the registry settings. I am more concerned about whether anyone else has a connection as fast or faster and if they have experienced any problems and have any suggestions. thanks
  6. As mentioned earlier, there are small one time use programs that speed up Acrobat reader. This is done by keeping the reader from loading up un-necessary dll files. Here is the one I use: I have the 1.34 version and have not upgraded because I am using an older version of AA reader. http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/software/in...amp;id=7F7290B5
  7. I believe if the drives are not recognized in the BIOS and/or are turned off in the BIOS they will run in compatability mode. When I diasble my floppy drive in BIOS, it then runs that way. You may also have a driver problem where windows is not using the correct driver for the device.
  8. Try going into System properties/performance tab/file system button and floppy disk tab and if the entry there is checked, uncheck it. If you do not know how to get to System properties, right click on M Computer and choose Properties.
  9. Foxit is a good reader program, but often has issues printing. Some websites will not let you use Foxit to do forms either, ie: Turbotax. I keep a low numbered version of Adobe on my system, ie: 4.01 or 5.01 and if it does not work, (have not had that problem), I have Foxit as a back viewer. There is also 2 Adobe reader speedup utilitys that are small one time use items that greatly improve the loading of acrobat reader.
  10. You will probably want to do some registry cleaning to pare down invalid entries. Then compact it. Some good ones are: JV16 Power Tools, Easy Cleaner, Reg Seeker and Crap Cleaner also has a reg cleaner. Sorry, do not have links now as it is getting late. Be sure to use the backup function of the cleaner when using it. JV16 Power Tools has an older vesion 1.3.0.196 that is freeware, the newer releases are shareware.
  11. Mplayer.exe IS an app and it is the one your computer has associated with wmv files. What version is it? This is usually found by clicking on the help section. If you want something else to play them it will have to have the codecs installed.
  12. Look to see if there is a link to toggle images.exe in your links folder. It was part of the IE tools package.
  13. I believe another way to do it would be to use winipcfg.exe. You could open it up from the run box by typing winipcfg and clicking run. You could even create a shortcut to it on your desktop or put it in the startup group and it would be in the running programs on the taskbar. To disconnect, click open the drop down box and choose the modem on the NIC and click on "release". To disconnect all, choose "release all". To reconnect, choose "renew" or "renew all". When you reboot your NIC will be redetected. Or you could just turn off the on/off button on the modem itself!
  14. You do not get any message at this particular site that indicates a block. All you get is Cannot open. Please verify that the path and filename are correct and try again. I also have gotten "unexpected failure" and "class not registered" but the above is what I get most often. I have even had a yahoo linked site tell me to upgrade my OS. I know I can play these because someone else using a program called URLSnooper and played the video from that urls it found fine. I have mplayer2 as a trusted app in my firewall config.
  15. I am using an old version of windows media player (WMP) 6.4 and have added the codec package that lets me play WMP 9 files. I have no desise to install WMP 9 and subject my computer to more bloat and possible problems I have heard associated with this install. My problem is that now some websites actually check to see what app you are going to use to view the video file and refuse to send it if they detect what they think is inadequate software. I am seeing this more and more and even though I can probably play the file with no problems, it is blocked from downloading. Is there any way to spoof what version of media player you have so you can get the download. thanks
  16. Go to the start button and select run. In the box type in msconfig. Next go to the startup tab and click on it. In there you will find everything that is checked will load up when windows starts. You can begin by unchecking un-needed items. The only one usually needed is system tray (systray.exe). If you do not understand these, help can be found here: http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/browse.php or post your startup list.
  17. If you know how to take care of your PC and it is doing every thing you want it to, then there is no need to switch. I was actually considering a change to Vista, but then I found out that you cannot upgrade from 98SE to Vista directly. I have seen reports that there is a way to do a clean install with the upgrade CD, but am not sure it would work with a 98 hard disk.

    Flash 9

I would try uninstalling the player, you can get an uninstaller here: http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/ Then go into your downloaded programs file in the windows directory and remove all the active X objects related to shockwave that may still be there. Then go and reinstall the palyer and see if that helps.
  19. Pare down your startup programs in msconfig. Dump that resource hog zone alarm and go to the free version of Outpost. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1056.html run the IE repair tool: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4130-1292662,00.html you did not give any PC specs If you try to close Explorer with task manager, your computer will lock up.

    98 to ME

Which version of Autopatcher do you use for 98SE? Does this have any unofficial patches? Thanks to all who replied.

    98 to ME

I am mostly looking for more speed, stabiility (mine is already fairly stable) not prettier. Maybe more tweakable, I am currently running 256 mb ram and have no problems with that amount. I am no longer much of a gamer as I would rather save my arm for fishing. The main problem I have with my current setup is IE 6. I do not want to have multiple browsers. I like to keep my system lean and have only what I need without much running in the background. The main problems I have with IE are the occasional lockup that sometimes occurs when I have mor than one browser window open. This sometimes leads to IE not shutting down and a scandisk after I reboot. I also get some of the "The page cannot be displayed" screen and with a refresh or two I get to where I want to go, but it happens too often and I have seen it on other computers. I know this is kind of a dead end upgrade and I know someone who upgraded ME to 2000 pro and MS told them that they would have to pay to keep SP4. I am still curious what features I would gain besides system restore which I would toggle as needed. Thanks

    98 to ME

I am considering this move. I am contented with the 98SE installation I now have, but was wondering what I might gain or lose by installing this. I can get the CD required fairly cheap right now. Would my computer be faster, slower, more bloated, more stable. In other words is this worthwhile or a case of if it ain't broke, don't fix it? Thanks to all
  23. That codec package is for WMP 7.0 or higher. This is the one you want: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en The only reason I checked was to see if this was a newer one that I should install, but it is for 7.0 or higher.
  24. I had no problem playing the file with WMP 6.4. I would suggest going to MS website and downloading a new copy of WMP 6.4. Then go to the codecs section and install the updated codecs package for 6.4. You can probably Google either or both.
