  1. jaclaz, I was completely fooled by that "dictionary" error! Let me explain why. As a boy I learned electronics from several books by British authors. Instead of saying "transistor" they used the word "valve." There were many other technical words and expressions used by the British, but not commonly used in the USA. When I saw the word "dictionary" I assumed the author was from Europe. Obviously, I did not know he meant to type "directory." IntMD, that tiny patch (64K) from daniel_k is remarkable! After reading about the Diyba patch, I was very concerned about system instability. I've got many full system backups, but no one wants an unstable operating system. Two questions about the WinXPPAE patch from daniel_k. The best way to install this patch is to enable PAE limiting to 4GB. Command line would be -> WINXPPAE /4GB If I installed 12 gigs of RAM with PAE limiting enabled, will I see the correct number (12 GB) under System Properties -> General Tab? System File Protection will restore the original files, unless something is done to stop that process. daniel_k says to integrate all the files on a CD. I don't understand. Just burning files to a CD won't fix the problem. What is the best method for installing the altered files, so they won't be overwritten by System File Protection?
  2. Patch download here: https://retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com/2018/01/windows-xp-ram-patch.html Instructions found in the 7z archive: 1. Place contents of the "For System32 folder into C:\WINDOWS\system32; Replace .exe and .dll files in System32 2. Enter "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers", copy contents of "For Drivers" folder (all .sys files) to the dictionary 3. Enabling PAE Click the start menu, then run (alternatively pressing win + r). Type "C:\boot.ini" then add "\PAE" at the very end of the last line of text. SAVE the file! 4. Reboot and enjoy up to 128gb of ram on your Windows XP installation ;) I understand the instructions, except for the word "dictionary." Is the patch author using the word "dictionary" because of this definition for the SYS file extension? "SYS is a file extension for system file device driver or hardware configuration file format used by Microsoft Windows. A SYS file also houses system settings and variables for the drivers that enable Windows to talk to your hardware and devices." The patch download is actually two 7z archives: 1. WinXP128GB_PAE_PATCH_Dibya.7z 2. Windows_XP_128GB_double_pae_addon_final_byDibya.7z Number 2 is found inside number 1. Do I extract everything in both archives? I'm confused.

  4. Googling about a problem can be a blessing or a curse. It's a curse when there are thousands of listings (and possible solutions) for the same problem. When I attempt to play a tube video a static image appears with this message: "No video with supported format and MIME type found" It could the browser, operating system, media player or a combination of two or three. I tried different browsers. No change. What can I do to resolve this problem?
  5. Didn't work, but it was a good suggestion roytam1. If you google, you'll find a long list of new and old posts about browsers not rendering reCAPTCHA. I don't know why Chrome is only browser that renders reCAPTCHA consistently. I must have performed fifty searches. Never found anything that actually worked. I'm not sure if this exists, but is there an app that creates a log file about all browser activity after clicking on a reCAPTCHA link? If there is such an app, I could post the results here at MSFN. Maybe one of you guys would see the problem in the log file.
  6. (The link for binaries is offline. Hope it's temporary.) I don't like Chrome based browsers, but I'm forced to use this Chrome fork almost everyday. Advanced Chrome (custom build) is the only browser I've got that reliably renders reCAPTCHA. http://browser.taokaizen.com/ The "old" simple CAPTCHA is distorted numbers or letters in a box. I probably have a dozen browsers. They all render simple CAPTCHA normally. https://pasteboard.co/HIFYAg8.gif The newer "I'm not a robot" reCAPTCHA is two parts: https://pasteboard.co/HJ7nD7hv.jpg https://pasteboard.co/HJ7u7wy.jpg I downloaded the latest build of New Moon. The first site I visited has "I'm not a robot" reCAPTCHA. It rendered perfectly! The problem is, reCAPTCHA rendered one time in New Moon. After clearing all caches (cookies, history, etc) I tried over and over. Instead of seeing reCAPTCHA, I see this box: https://pasteboard.co/HKdqjm0.jpg New Moon rendered reCAPTCHA the first time I used the browser. I've been trying for a few days, but all I get is a "could not connect" box. Google service is not the problem. When New Moon fails, Advanced Chrome always renders reCAPTCHA. I'd like to use New Moon as my primary browser, but I need a fix for the reCAPTCHA problem.
  7. When I was in elementary school (several decades before the internet) teachers would frequently tell this unfunny joke. Student - How do you spell dinosaur? Teacher - Look it up in the dictionary. Student - How can I look it up in the dictionary if I can't spell the word! With reCAPTCHA, I feel like that student or a dog chasing its own tail. There are countless Google listings about Mozilla based browsers failing to render the reCAPTCHA image. You see nothing or a message about switching to a supported browser. Posting about this problem on browser specific forums is not helpful. There seems to be a million possible causes and solutions. reCAPTCHA is a Google product like their Chrome browser. I have MxNitro, which is a Chrome based browser. It renders reCAPTCHA normally. If I could use a Chrome based browser all the time there would be no problem. Once or twice a week I use a version of Firefox called Light. It is the "real" Firefox, but it's a lightweight version. I need the FlashGot add-on which fully integrates download managers into the "Save As" dialog box. FlashGot is the solution when downloading from sites that use redirected links. A simple plug-in listing your download manager in the browser Context Menu is useless with redirects. The sites I was downloading from have adopted reCAPTCHA. I can longer use Firefox Light because it will not render reCAPTCHA. FlashGot was created for Firefox. As far as I know, there is nothing similar for Chrome based browsers. Is XP the cause of this rendering problem with reCAPTCHA, or is there some browser edit or add-on that would fix the problem with Mozilla based browsers?
  8. dencorso, your command line was extremely helpful. I've got two install tracking apps. Revo Uninstaller and Advanced Uninstaller. .NET Framework 4.0 performed 3,600 disc operations and 16,574 Registry additions, edits, or something else. It's a big honking app! After the install I immediately rebooted. Bootup was good, but there was a problem. I run a script in the Startup folder. I don't want several apps smashing into each other, so my script sequentially loads each app in the tray. A "Wait" command allows each app to finish loading before the next begins. .NET Framework was crashing my script. After running the "all purpose fix framework" command line everything was fine. No more problems! Thanks again, dencorso.
  9. XP Pro_SP3 You can find many old posts about .NET Framework 4.0 drastically slowing system bootup. I never had a slow boot problem, however, after Windows finished loading my system ran like cold molasses! I tried installing 4.0 twice. Each time I restored the system from an image backup. There are so many apps that don't use .NET Framework, so it wasn't a priority. A few days ago I downloaded an app that requires 4.0 (I've got 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5) If install 4.0 again, I know my system will run very slow. Is there a way to run 4.0 as a "lite version" of .NET Framework? Maybe disable a few processes that are not needed. Can't find a solution.
  10. Yes jaclaz, I know it seems foolish to mention that all the moving components are really moving! I mentioned that because I thought one of you guys would ask, "is the printer dead?" Actually, that's probably a good question. After all, this brand new printer sat on a closet shelf for many years. The New Hardware Wizard appears seconds after the printer is powered up. It tries to install a native driver, but it doesn't work. There are countless USB driverpacks available for download. Using a few of these driverpacks, I upgraded all the USB drivers in my old 98SE system. Has anyone created printer driverpacks? It would be nice if I could download a big collection of printer drivers, and let the New Hardware Wizard scan the list. There are also command lines that will force install a driver. If I had drivers that were almost guaranteed to work, I would try a force install. That Neat Net Tricks posting is kind of discouraging. After reading all that info from experts, it doesn't seem very likely I'll ever get this HP Deskjet working with 98SE.
  11. I was asking for a generic printer utility. The proper name is "universal." Here is a universal HP driver for Windows 98: http://www.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=1344325 I tried to print a test page. Nothing happened. The printer failed to respond. When the printer is powered up, all moving components travel normally across the carriage. The question is, why did the universal HP driver fail to communicate with the printer? It's suppose to work with all HP Deskjet and Laserjet printers.
  12. It seemed like my copy of 98SE on a laptop was doomed to sit on a closet shelf. Recently, a friend was cleaning out some bedroom closets in his home. He found a factory sealed box with a brand new printer! It's an HP Deskjet D4260. For some reason, it was never used. When he offered it to me, I immediately thought it would be nice to use my laptop with this printer. I've got the CD with all HP software, but it's not compatible with 98SE. Apparently, the drivers for Windows 2000 and 98SE are the same: http://www.fixya.com/support/t2548443-need_driver_win_98_hp_deskjet_d4260 The HP website does not list a software package for D4260 and 98SE. I've had terrible luck with KernelEx. I managed to use a couple of apps with KernelEx, but most attempts have failed. The drivers alone are not enough. Without software there is no way to align the print head or perform maintenance functions. Years ago I downloaded an app called X-Mouse Button Control. It worked with almost any mouse, providing many more features than conventional mouse apps. I haven't searched yet, but is there generic software that might work with a very basic printer like HP Deskjet D4260?
  13. SOLUTION: I opened the Device Manager window before powering up my AIO printer. A new listing appeared under Imaging Devices > EPSON WF-2750/2760 Series. The redundant (and useless) item under Disk Drives > EPSON Storage USB Device has been disabled. Removable Disk is gone from My Computer. All printer operations are working normally. Why don't I uninstall EPSON Storage USB Device from Device Manager? After using all printer functions several times, uninstalling is probably a good idea. I say "probably" because this item may reassert itself each time I press the power button.
  14. Thanks bphlpt. After having some bad luck with AIO printers, a friend recommended this model. It prints, copies, scans, and faxes. I don't see any additional slots for SD cards, USB sticks, etc. I downloaded a 295 page user manual. Maybe something in this lengthy manual will explain the Removable Disk in My Computer. When I power up this printer, I hear the assigned WAV sound for a new external device. XP is loading two devices, because I hear that sound twice! It's not causing any problems, but I would like to understand what's happening.
  15. I just purchased an Epson AIO printer. My Computer lists this device correctly under Scanners and Cameras. However, a nonexistent Removable Disk is also listed under Devices with Removable Storage. If you select this phantom Removable Disk with your mouse a message box appears. It says, "Please insert a disk into drive." In Device Manager it's listed under Disk Drives as EPSON Storage USB Device. I apologize for asking this question, when I already know the answer. Is there something I can do to remove that phantom drive from My Computer?
  16. Yes jaclaz, I said it was an "ancient glitch" in the first sentence of my post. Many years ago it was clearly understood that all folders in XP "appeared" to have a read-only tick, but it should be completely ignored. It effected nothing. If you google this subject you'll find countless old posts, because that tick scared a lot of people. They actually dumped and reinstalled their systems over and over, trying to make this harmless glitch go away! I downloaded the portable version of File Extension Changer from Softpedia: http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/System/File-management/Windows-Portable-Applications-File-Extension-Changer-Portable.shtml I wish this app had worked. It's suppose to create batch files that REDO and UNDO the extension changes. I know there are many similar apps, but this one had the options I needed.
  17. XP Pro_SP3 An ancient glitch with XP has never been a problem, until I tried a portable app called File Extension Changer on a USB flash drive. Read-only is automatically ticked in all XP folders. There are thousands of posts and blogs about this subject. Here is an old Neowin post explaining why all XP folders are created with a read-only attribute. https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647556-read-only-unchecking-bugged/ File Extension Changer displays an error message (see attached image) because every folder appears to be write-protected. We all know that a read-only folder attribute is usually meaningless in XP. The solution would be simple if unticking read-only worked. It doesn't. Is there a workaround for this problem, or should I abandon File Extension Changer?
  18. The most popular browser addon, plugin, or extension is a download manager. The browser I'm using right now has Download With > FlashGet in the Context Menu. If all your downloads are direct links, this type of integration is all you need. 95% of my downloads are redirects. That means a new tab or window opens before the download starts. All cloud storage file and video sites use redirects (also called URL forwarding). Your favorite download manager is useless most of the time. The "Save As" browser applet seems to be your only option. I recently tried Portable SlimBoat. It claims to have a fully functional download manager that will pause or resume broken downloads. Here is a direct quote from FlashPeak: "You no longer have to worry about broken downloads. You can close the web browser and pause all the download jobs. In the next session, you can pick up the download jobs right where you left it off." I tested SlimBoat with a 75 MB file. At 50% I closed the manager. Half the file (about 37.5 MB) should have been cached to my local drive, so the download could be resumed. It didn't work. The file was listed as zero bytes. This would never happen with a "real" manager like uGet, EagleGet, FlashGet, etc. I know how to use most any browser, but I'm not an expert on how they function. Is there a lightweight browser that will integrate and launch a real download manager with redirects?
  19. XP Pro_SP3 You can edit the Registry or use an app to add or subtract Context Menu items. That's not what I need to do. Delete is located above Rename on my Context Menu. I don't know why this is happening to me, but I've clicked on Delete instead of Rename several times. There is no Undo Delete command with a flash drive. Your only option is to use an app like Recuva. The file recovery apps I've tried dredge up so many junk files they're a nightmare to use. If I could remember all the time (which is impossible) I would use keyboard shortcuts instead of a mouse with flash drives. I want to move Delete to the bottom of the Context Menu, walled off from all the other items with a separator line. I don't know how to do this with a Registry hack. I'm hoping there is an app that can do the job.
  20. XP Pro_SP3 I've got a My Computer toolbar on the Taskbar. Any toolbar can be dragged to other locations on the Desktop. Is there an app that will create a My Computer menu someplace else, like the Tray (Notification Area) or the Quick Launch Toolbar? I don't mean a simple menu with a passive list of shortcuts. I can create a menu script that will display passive shortcuts. I need a fully active menu that behaves exactly like a My Computer toolbar. I never really liked having extra toolbars on the Taskbar or floating around the Desktop. That's why I'm asking for an app that adds a fully functional My Computer to the Tray or Quick Launch Toolbar.
  21. This is an open source app for advanced electronics hobbyists or professionals. I respect the people who authored this app, so I blanked out most of the windows contents. A is the complete window. I want to resize the window so the only visible area is the meter display (Not Active) at the bottom labeled B. I tried NirCmd and Resource Hacker. The results are the same. The window is resized from the bottom up. The image labeled C is the problem. The window class (not title) is TMainForm. Here is the NirCmd I tried: nircmd.exe win setsize class "TMainForm" x, y, width, height I need to resize the window from the top down, so the meter display (B) is the only visible area. It's ok if the caption bar is included. The apps listed at the Raymond.CC blog are popular, but I need an app that supports command lines for a script. https://www.raymond.cc/blog/how-to-resize-an-unresizable-window-or-dialog-box/ NirCmd has a long list of windows commands (version 2.81). Is there a way to combine or execute a few of those commands to produce the results I need?
  22. XP Pro_SP3 There is cell and broadband service in my small, rural town. I've lived here for 10 years. About once or twice each month broadband drops out for several hours. A very inexpensive dial-up ISP is a good backup. IE 6.0 is installed with SP3. I've always used Mozilla browsers, so I never had any reason to update IE. I was beginning to have a few page rendering problems, so I decided to try other lightweight browsers. A couple recommended IE 7.0 or better, so I installed IE 8.0. (I edited out all personal info from the attached images.) You can create your own WinINet and RAS scripts, but NirCmd does the job with a simple shortcut. Before installing IE 8.0, NirCmd "inetdial" used the wininet.dll and launched the active dialog box you see in the image. I really like this dialog box. After dialing a number it displays the connection info you want to see. NirCmd "rasdialdlg" opens dial-up properties if you need to change the settings. After installing IE 8.0 (and a newer version of wininet.dll) NirCmd "inetdial" opens dial-up properties, not the active dialog box that connects you to the web! There are other ways of connecting like creating a shortcut to the RAS phonebook file or rasphone.pbk. There are also many applets that will do the job. I don't like any of these alternatives. If possble, I want to restore that active WinINet dialog box. I don't know why NirCmd "inetdial" stopped working after installing IE 8.0.
  23. It never crossed my mind that a reCAPTCHA challenge would function with JavaScript toggled off! I tried that Google reCAPTCHA demo with K-Meleon. As you can see in the attached image, JavaScript has been disabled on the privacy toolbar. It worked perfectly! I immediately visited two sites that failed to load reCAPTCHA. They both displayed that message about enabling JavaScript. After releasing the K-Meleon JavaScript button I reloaded the page. The reCAPTCHA challenge displayed normally. 1. I go to a site with JavaScript disabled. 2. Wait for the message about enabling JavaScript. 3. Reload the page with JavaScript enabled. 4. reCAPTCHA works! I don't know why this disabling and enabling of JavaScript fixes reCAPTCHA in my browser, but at least I've got a procedure that works. That Google demo works with scripting disabled. It's hard to imagine any "real" reCAPTCHA challenges functioning without JavaScript. jumper, I found several posts that mention SeaMonkey working with reCAPTCHA. I will download the last version for XP: http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/legacy Thanks jumper, dencorso, and Mathwiz.
  24. XP Pro_SP3 Please, before you read this post perform a google search. Type "firefox reCAPTCHA." I just did and the results list is 218,000. On the first page of that google search you'll find a post entitled, "ReCaptcha impossibly difficult on Firefox exclusively." There are countless posts, blogs, etc., trying to resolve this problem. Google's reCAPTCHA is used on thousands of sites. As you can see from the attached image, it frequently fails to load into Firefox and other Mozilla browsers. I've got the latest version of Light Firefox and K-Meleon installed. If you're not familiar, Light Firefox uses the same Gecko engine. It loads web pages faster and the features it lacks I don't need. I decided to try one of the smallest browsers, QtWeb. It has many flaws, but I just wanted to see if it would load a reCAPTCHA box. It also fails to load reCAPTCHA. The version numbers for Firefox and Light Firefox are not the same. I just installed Light Firefox 48, which is the latest version. Many experts recommend disabling add-ons, if reCAPTCHA is blocked. Since I just installed Light Firefox there are no add-ons. The folks at Mozilla want you to have the latest version of Java (JRE). The last version of Java compatible with XP is 1.7.0.25. The problem is, many people are running Windows 7, 8, and 10 and they also fail to load that reCAPTCHA box. Another recommended "fix" is trying different UA (User Agent) strings. I've tried two or three dozen. Didn't work. I need a browser (excluding IE) that is compatible with XP Pro_SP3 and displays Google's latest version of reCAPTCHA.
  25. Guys, I freely admit that my "knowledge base" about Firefox is almost zero. That's why I'm asking very simple questions. After reading your replies to my post, I don't think Firefox is a good choice for me. For several years I was hooked on a lightweight Mozilla browser, K-Meleon. It loaded web pages incredibly fast, compared to all the other browsers I had tried. I'm using the latest official stable release, version 75.1. Unfortunately, the past several months have been a disaster for K-Meleon. Many web pages will not render properly. I see constant messages about "switching to a supported browser." If you visit the K-Meleon forum, there are several updated builds created by forum members. Apparently, these newer builds fix the web page rendering problem. Before I abandon K-Meleon forever, I'll post a message asking about these updated builds.
