  1. "But you can pay compensation payment that will magically make emissions disappear". Sorry I could not resist pulling that stupid comment I keep hearing how some "responsible" hypocrite consumertards can allow themself to fly while can criticise others for not caring environment . That emission compensation payment is biggest scam ever. Money is going straight into shareholder pockets. Online stores offers similar to shipping, but it wont mean your order is shipped more efficently, just means you are scammed. I actually walk more than I drive. I am not fastest runner but I am able to walk long distances. I have been walking even 40km walks with few short breaks. I spend way less time in front of my computer than outside when off from work. As for fuel it is important here to have fuel during winter to avoid having water condenstate inside fuel tank. Starting car with fuel water mix is not fun at all and whole thing feels crawling. Well there you see what I mean with walled garden. Those snippets are to keep you hooked with Goolag I mean Google. One funny example was when was looking liters to gallon conversion and one of snippets asked "is US gallon same as European gallon?" . Gallon is gallon no matter the place and that question makes no sense. Also google priorities CNN and some others to "prevent false information" when search for anything. Once google suggested Xbox one arcticle as second result from whatever media site it was when was searching with term "original xbox lpc header pinout". Those will twist search results and making things look wrong hiding whatever I actually search Well I still use Google products, mostly Gmail because email provider at the end wont mean anything. I choose any that allows me to use IMAP to send and recieve emails to avoid vendor lock in. Why I said wont mean anything? That is problem with email protocol, it is not secure, email provider can read stored mails and in and outgoing mails and even someone in middle in theory can read your emails since it is plaintext. There is no such as end to end encrypted email, sure there is PGP but it has it own flaws. Tutanota, Protonmail and others so called "encrypted zero access, forward secrecy, add here some fancy sounding words" emails uses deceptive advertising by telling you have end to end encrypted mail. Even if they use encryption key is done by js and stored to their server and even if they would not read it all it needs is single malicious javascript to decrypt it. Also those forces you to bloated electron client "to keep you safe". Do not use email for secure activities as it was never designed for it. And use email over IMAP for better security and privacy so wont have webmail vurneabilities and you wont need any JS. Some mobile core2duo boards had no AMT installed at all but mostly Pentium 4 478 socket era had no IME. I got P4P800 mainboard and it is very solid, lacks IME and other junk, got expansion slots and supports offically down to Windows 98. And if IME is so secure why NSA or other goverment agencies wont trust it?
  2. wait american car drive by american with manual transmission. Ok that was bad joke that european say from americans since many do not seem to be able drive manual anymore and manual earned nickname anti theft stick. Something more strange is seeing drivers complaining from car having power key instead start stop engine thingy. How hard using key can be? All you need to do is turn it all way to start engine then release. For me it makes it harder as it prevents manually adjust starting motor. In cold weather you may need slam accerlator while turning on to make engine start and automatic usually fails to do it. Anyway that car seems like a great thing. Funny that here 2.2l is considered as dirty and cars with that engine size generally got 500+ euros emission tax every year (like that is gonna make emission disappear). I do not know from chrysler engines since everyone here got v6 or higher cylinder chrysler because that is something many other cars did not offer as option. But I got experience from General Motors L61 ecotec 2.2l non turbo. Those were used in original Opel Zafira A and Opel Speedster (Saturn sky) until 2004 or so. They had diesel block despite being petrol powered and that is why they were so reliable. One can easily reach 400 000km without leakages, it gets 8-10l/100km on highway (sorry I do not know from MPG). I am surprised GM engine lasts that long consider lot atleast newers fails out early. For me 2.2l is not big at all and pushing small engine too high can have all type of side effects. Wonder how long those 1.2l heavily turbocharged engines last? Honda 1.5l earthdream engine already has oil dilution issues even on latest european model that do not exist on lower powered 2.0l vtec earthdream engine. Less engine gets excess strain longer it lasts. Climate protection is done with € or $ or <insert your country currency symbol here> on eyes. Consumertards buy wasteful unreliable stuff in belief they are saving the earth. Worst example that made me question this world was when one guy explained me how he did good thing by wasting his old phone and buying new iPhone that had no charger that saved E-waste. How about not buying brand new device every year from companies that design anti repair garbage and trying extend old one that work just fine as long as can? That would actually help reducing waste, but no since could not consoom then. Sure I got plenty of phones from 1995-2008, but all of them I saved from being disposed into e-waste or were phones I already owned and all got user replacable batteries and casing is held by few screws at worse if need to replace and most got Xpress on cover or similar easily swappable. Same applies to most computers I got. Lot of them were saved same faith. Diamondtron CRT I got friend actually saved from building that was about to get demolished along with other working stuff to himself (he had permission to take stuff from one floor). I would actually make better news article to one newspaper than most of it environmental hippies showed. Every time it is someone who buys last year iPhone (I have no idea why it always must be iPhone) or macbook and most of article is saying Apple makes devices last longer with offering updates and let just ignore batteries are long dead before you reach few year unless you take battery surgery that is dangerous to phone and how Macbooks are stronger than laptops (Thinkpads or HP compaq NC/NX series anyone?). But I would not be trending since wont run after latest fashion trends and operate equipments that are from 1990s at best. EV and other are just trend I would not mind all that if it was not shoved down my throat. I do not care if you drive EV, there is actually some useful cases to one like doing short inside town areas (though bicycle works better to it), I do not care and can actually understand why some uses smartphone, my personal preference is simple brick but some may need access to email anywhere by work or something else and I am not declining it. What I am against is wasteful design or modern equipments. Easy of service is important to longevity of equipment. Good example is saab 900 turbo where fuse box is under the hood and fuses are clearly marked so do not need manual to replace one and that car got engine that can last 500 000km without leaks if kept good care. Same applies to phones and laptops. Non user replacable batteries are anticonsumer feature that purpose if prevent consumer from extending device life themself. There used to be long time pretty much standard that battery was held on place by backcover or was mounted at back of laptop, but that changed one point to internal ones for no good reason. I could list lot more examples but you get the point. I am against badly designed equipment, but do not care from something until someone starts shoving it down my throat
  3. Anyone knows where I can find language packs for Firefox 2 and seamonkey? As much as I like retrozillas they are english by default. There used to be language packs on Mozilla site but then they desired pull plugs and all went away. I tried look with wayback machine with no luck. I am looking finnish language pack.
  4. where I live battery can run flat even if drive car on winter if do too short trips. Cold takes battery life and short time alternator is not warm enough to produce enough power. I generally try drive atleast once over 20 minutes while engine is at normal 80c+ temp.
  5. Duckduckgo uses yahoo as far as I know to results or atleast part of index is yahoo. I like to use wiby.me to search too along with frogfind. Found lot of new sites that walled garden of google and others try to hide or drop to last page. Also sites on it mostly indexes non commercial bloat free sites. That part of internet is dying away every day since big corpos and their walled gardens
  6. it depends from age of equipment. Caps from that era could dry out sometimes if been used but age did not always mean no drying. PS3 for example had issue with capasitors drying out despite being from 2007. And generally if under 10 years between use times it will be ok. Mostly seen dried caps on original Macintosh (before Macintosh was fancy cult symbol) that had been last turned on in 1992 and was turned on after 30ish years. So as long as you wont leave them stay there for 2040 without ever testing there should be no worries. Also solid state capasitors do not try out. This was more to your old capacitors.
  7. it is good idea test them with capacitor tester or other equipment. Caps from that era had chemicals that prevented drying of electrolyte (unlike today). Even they had that they can still dry out and go pop and smoke when used. That era caps never leaked from me only gave smoke when failed. If they are in good shape you can have good lifespan out of them. Just make sure switch equipment on requarly to prevent drying out. For solder I would say leaded solder if you got professional who can get it (it is recisted only licenced professional in europe because apparently I cannot know how handle anything toxic without expensive cert) or you have it on home. It is much better to solder with and lasts longer. I got some industrial Flux free lead solder
  8. i cannot recommend VS series to anyone. Had few of them exploding under 100w load (430w unit). VS stands for very s***ty likely
  9. I would want one too but it seems no quality brand no longer makes those. I want psu like my antec 350w was but higher wattage and without cap issue. That thing lasted from 2004 to 2010 or so when exploded due capacitor plague. Some prebuilts still got those power supplies but they are usually low quality or limited connectors I guess industrial power supplies would be more like it Better luck trying to find metallic computer case that is not mostly plastic. My 2004 antec sonata case i still going strong and got dual 120mm fan slots. Simple black and stylish and strong metal body with only front being plastic.
  10. is was best seasonic PSU for low budgdet but was replaced with cheaper s12-III. One point companies did bad budget power supplies they they did ones with high quality then they went back down cutting down quality to any class. Only other OEM psu I could recommend is superflower though those only got 5 year warranty for some reason
  11. some 6th gen cpus matches performance of 8th gen intel cpu and that requiment is artificial by for needing that TPM chip for no good reason. I know Windows 11 been running fine on 2007 dual xeon board since @Dave-H mentioned from it on another topic. Whole system requiment thing is to milk off more from users
  12. It has been computer maintenance weekend for me. I was planning on installing 40mm Noctua into TNT2, but noticed screws in current fan were too short so need go hardware store look bit longer ones. So anyway here is how it look now from inside. And yes SSD is not mounted best way but I had no hdd caddy to case and it is better let it move around freely. I chewed front fan casing a bit because whole design was stupid for airflow. It had few tiny holes resulting low or none airflow on intake. Rest of fans are noctuas. I kinda like older Power supplies more for having non sleeved cables that takes less space, but I cannot cut those Then was able to find decent way read YLE news and weather reports and emergency alerts under retrozilla. This most applies to Finnish users but Yle got text version from teletext online that renders without issues with JS disabled. I mostly use that to check weather, weather alerts, stocks and sport results and seems good. Shame site needs HTTPS that may break access to it on future under Windows 98. I am not saying HTTPS is useless and should not be used on any sites with user information, but I see no reason force HTTPS only from server side to text based sites. There is HTTPS enforcement addons to browsers and modern browsers got feature built in so why server side need force it? And excuse modern browsers support HTTPS is good reason to lock out any non HTTPS users if bad. Not all operating or even hardware can handle HTTPS. And who knows what upcoming tls libraries will require new cpu instructions or even worse TMP chip like Win11 locking out anything older. Big corpos could it if they want. That also reminds me from one email I sent to webmaster year ago. One finnish site had WML (Wireless markup language) site along simple HTML site. WML/WAP is meant to handheld devices like older mobile devices like cellphones and PDA and was golden standard before new WBML (web bloat markup language) aka HTML5 came into play. That site WAP page allowed to download old ringtones and operator logos to nokias and read site owner forum or even post there. However I noticed how all download links gave secure connection failure error on phone. I checked WML site code and noticed links were HTTPS instead of HTTP despite site offering HTTP fallback. After I sent email to webmaster which had last time been updated in 2011, was surprised he actually answered me and fixed that issue. Reason to it was since today Google seems lower site on index if it got HTTP so or mixed contect so he batch update whole site and broke wap page by accident. That site is working again thanks to my email to webmaster. So now websites will drop on search index it they got no https. That will make many search results wrong. What is site that google dropped on index for no HTTPS got exactly answer I am looking for and I cannot find it? Again I am not saying HTTPS is useless but some seems go religious over it that service seems malfunction atleast on finnish Windows XP. I have tried it on both professional and home edition SP3 with or without updates. I guess it could be localised issue
  13. You want to get most important data out first with minimal retries. If there is bad blocks Windows will halt copy process. Hook drive as secondary and use unstoppable filecopy (freeware). After you got all important data backed up, you can try cloning of disk.
  14. I did not mean bios memory protection, rather kernel level one. Windows NT and OS/2 prevent program memory areas from intefering with each other. That has performance hit but very minor and unless you got 386 or 486SX-33 you wont notice it. Bios one is useless as it causes more trouble than does good. Only worse thing I can think is bios antivirus that messed up installations by protecting me from installing new boot sector because virus like activities done by installer which formats drive and installs boot block. I have bunch of Windows and other operating system install manuals and all states to disable bios antivirus to avoid it. Never got the point of it anyway. BIOS need supply hardware config to machine nothing else
  15. I me neither. I either got or trash picked my old hardware for free. what is funny Windows 98SE boots in few seconds before installing drivers then takes 20-30 seconds. One thing that slows it down is system file check on every boot. Not sure how disable it manually, since 98lite disabled it during setup. Can get 10 seconds off from boot time. On XP .net framework NGEN service if exist will cause network to hang 10+ secs in my experience. Cannot say from firewalls since I use network level firewalls only after having too many issues with software ones. NT by design is slower because of memory protection. Windows 9x is faster for lacking it but prices comes in case of bogus program that takes whole thing down. Also XP did have useless services and things, but after tweaking it is very solid NT based operating systems offering sweet spot on performance, stability and compability with newer and older hardware.
  16. I have run Windows 98 on Dell Optiplex GX620. I needed external soundcard, but was able install 945 chipset driver with unoffical one, use nvidia PCI e gpu (6200TC), intergrated nic had windows 98 driver. There was few issues like system hanging if had usb flash drive connected on boot, hdd intensive operations made system hang until was done and sata performance was lacking As for 865 chipset. I got that on my P4p800 mainboard. ACPI is buggy though so must disabled with /p i before setup and then disable APM at device manager on 9x. Also you need RLoew sata patch for native sata operation. I must have had run test Windows 98 install on every piece of pc hardware I own. Good comparisation is Doom on NES vs Doom on DOS. NES one looks overall worse even on crt and is not even filling whole screen.
  17. I am still waiting my power supply. Store status shows not available still. higher power psu never hurts. Less load unit gets longer it lasts. these are ones I can recommend. Note if you get seasonic connect you need plenty if case space for that weird looking power splitter thing. Prime is best in quality and focus PX/GX if limited budget and still want reliable quality unit. PX got higher power rating I guess I know where my next salary goes. Will buy new power supplies for backup so in future if new standards kills ATX12V (It will for you own benefit because who does not buy brand new hardware every day). Or in future there is more personal computers. Only locked down non user programmable appliances and anyone who wants to keep using user programmable multipurpose computer is treated as crazy
  18. That page kinda reminds me from Xbox port of half-life 2. It did run on DX8.1, but hardware was way underpowered (733mhz Pentium 3, 64mb ram, nVidia NV2A aka geforce 2 based gpu), yet still game had decent fps. I played it trough on Xbox and was enjoyable experience. They got around memory limit by splitting whole game small areas and it had way more loadings than pc versions. Still was near miracle they managed to make it playable. Well thank you for causing me 2007-2008 flashbacks .
  19. seasonics (s12-II not s12-III and focus gold been good ones and made by oem) just avoid s12-III, it uses one japanese cap while, rest are cheapo I mean teapo. s12-II had all caps japanese
  20. there was some way to "include" driver to setup after been installed, but forgot which way. Then it should prompt press to esc to cancel loading iastor.sys when going safe mode.
  21. Did you use offical driver? Maybe try reinstall sata drivers. And that bsod means inaccessible boot device
  22. Ah. Minor misundersanding. And that is true. Software gets more bloated over time making point of better computing power worthless
  23. What chipset and what driver do you use? Did you install driver during or after setup? Also what BSOD you got? 0x0000007?
  24. Soon it is important day to me, well to my Windows 98 machine. It has been 3 years since got it and got back to Windows 98 scene properly after had break. I tell short story here how ended back to Windows 9x user. Back when I was as child, my dad had computers with Windows 95 and later Windows 98. I remember Windows 98 pc had some Asus nForce athlon mainboard, 15gb quantum fireball hdd and 256mb ram if remember correctly. Those were first I used internet with, used software, played games and other stuff. One point both of machines started suffer from technical issues. Windows 98 pc mainboard started suffer from bad capacitors and not sure what was issue was on win95 one. However back then hardware evolved rather quickly and did not feel good idea use money to repair old hardware, when cost could be worth newer faster hw. One point I got my first machine from dad which was quite fast for the time (Intel Pentium 4 2.80ghz, Asus P4P800 mainboard, Club3D ATI 9800 pro (later Gainward Geforce 6800GT 256mb AGP). That gave me proper access into computer world. I had windows 98 and XP and Ubuntu Linux on it. Was also first machine I did virtualisation on, I was curious from operating system history and wanted experience operating systems never experienced before. Virtual PC 2007 was main I used for a long time. Over time I also learnt hate Internet Explorer more and more and understood why many did not like it at all and started take step midigate it so would be ok for it existence. Fast forwarding last 6-8 years been kind of bouncing around. During that time I had more focus on getting work done with software I was forced to use personal system, operating systems worsened. Touch screen UI forced to desktop, ads by default everywhere on UI etc. Also felt was last person who did not want upgrade to newer OS. World changed too fast for me. In short my Pentium 4 fell out of use and XP, 98 were only used on vm sometimes Later I really started to miss Windows XP and other operating systems on native OS. Windows 7 was ok, but lacked that simple and safe feeling (though had it more than Windoze 8+ that felt like downloading adwares to machine). First I got dell Optiplex 755, that served as XP machine around half from year, then friend on one previous workplace mentioned he had some parts on closet he could sell after I mentioned was looking mainboard. I got pretty good XP rig then (Asus M2N SLI Deluxe, Nvidia 8800gt, Phenom-x4). I felt very good to be back on XP, but felt wanted go older. But enough of XP lets go to 9x part Around 3.5-4 years ago (Wont remember for sure) I got Digital Venturis 466 with 486DX2-66 cpu, 8mb ram and 500mb hdd. I upgraded ram to 68mb and hdd to 20gb with dynamic disk overlay since had no smaller and installed Windows 95. That machine was and still is amazing, durable and assembled England according sticker. It served my need for older games, but I wanted 3d accerelation, but it only had ISA slots. 3 years ago I got that Pomi that story I mentioned at https://msfn.org/board/topic/177106-running-vanilla-windows-98-in-2020-and-beyond/?do=findComment&comment=1205090 Still was not fully satisfied, I wanted CRT and classic keyboard with Windows keys. Keyboard I got from same place as Pomi. I also got Windows 98SE finnish CD from there with other install disks and floppies from there. Before only had Windows 98 First edition. It was Microsoft Internet keyboard, that I use still. Around year ago I wanted reduce footprint of my Windows 98 install with 98lite. All was fine until messed up registry and restored too old backup that required reinstall. I made clean small Windows 98SE install. That point I started use Windows 98 seriously. One thing I wanted was connect to internet. Most obvious was use Firefox 2, but that had issues connecting sites due obsolete TLS and broken web standards. I tried Kernel EX, but it felt to break more than did good so decided to stick with vanilla Windows 98. I quickly got impression everyone in retro communities though connecting Windows 98 to internet (it is not internet it is lan passing traffic trough firewalled gateway to internet on me) was insane, because all hackers would come and hijack my system. Sadly none of vintage or retro forums were not suited to me and wanted find forum with members wanting keep legacy stuff alive. Then I ended up looking some things on MSFN and it felt right one, but did not register, because felt would never have anything to contribute there and had no time to hang on boards or anywhere else. Then Covid came to play and was left to home doing nothing almost a year like most and had more time play with projects I love and was no more required force use some annyoing software so could upgrade OS i liked as daily drive (98, XP, Vista). It was like hitting wall on speed. Had change stop and think world and what really wanted Then one point my dad asked if wanted something from my old machine and I was surprised, dad had kept it around like most of my other stuff. I felt so happy my dad did not throw/gave stuff away without asking from me first if needed. I got most of childhood things intact. I used lost of effort to restore my first machine like new and more effort will be used. I have special bondage to that machine. I even got original ATI 9800 to it still. Also around that point I finally decided join MSFN forums. Here I learnt bunch of cool XP and Windows 9x software like New moon and Retrozilla and patched Netscape 9 and CSS fixes that made browsing modern web somewhat usable. And found all great peoples who had goal that idea, keep fighting against windmills to keep operating system they like good on daily use and had actual knowledge from things. Sure lot we share different thoughs on things, but most share same basic ideologies. And I was wrong from not having anything to contribute to community. Going three months backwards I traveled to meet few friends in other side of Finland and got all type of cool stuff from them. Friend had salvaged two CRT monitors along with other stuff from building that was going to be torn down and wanted give 2x of those monitors to me. I also got Compaq Presario 5000 (820mhz celeron, nvidia tnt2 riva), bunch of old Nokia phones (3330, 6110, 5110, E90, 880, 3210 etc.), bunch of classic Windows game titles, most for Windows 98. 2x 90s notebooks (Digital Hinote and Compaq Armanda with Pentiums). One of those friend gave all that for free, because he no longer lives in Finland and was not worth take all aboard where he had similar stuff already and rather gave them to someone they knew. I had bags full of stuff when got home from there. Then fast forwarding to this day I am writing long post here and moved to new area (in middle of nowhere with deep forest next to me) and got new workplace that I like. Also finally got room to use all machines properly. All systems I mentioned expect Dell 755 (it got good home for someone who needed it more than me now) are still used day to day. I am waiting build shelve, so can connect my 486 now running Windows 3.11 OEM that original HDD had. Now got My first pc, Pomi and Compaq Presario 5000 hooked into KVM switch to my 17" Diamondtron CRT. Also I rock on old monochrome brick Nokia, that I wanted as kid, but never got so good that way too. So despite world turned crazy I was able find good things out of it and enjoyed best could from times That was bit lenghty post, but that is how I ended up back to Windows 98 scene. For me Windows XP and even more Windows 98 is safe and familiar desktop environment, that feels place I am alone isolated from world with full control over things, that is what modern OS (Expect linux partially) fails to deliver. I will give my Pomi nice troughly cleanup, new quality fan for gpu and maybe more storage space and if find good usb and audio header will give that too. Likely I am not only who has been going trough many phases before ended back to scene. And I am most likely here to stay. Lets keep Windows 98 alive
  25. Now well wait until Microsoft will release Windows 12 and start hype it like crazy how it will revolutionize computing forever and is way better than Windows 11 . Then soon after it they will release windows 13 that will be unlucky release resulting MS go bankrupt because it requires quantum computer (that is only to load desktop that will still lag) that are not consumer market and google and others who got one refuses touch MS software on supercomputer . I am afraid Microsoft will jump to rapid release bandwagon and start bumping Windows version way Apple and Google does with IOS/Macos/ChromeOS/Android. F-91W is still best watch ever. It is dirt cheap and does what most new watches fails to, show me what time is it
