Something very strange has happened to the Search Companion on both my XP machines.

If I select Start>Search>For Files or Folders the XP Search Companion comes up as usual, but only once.

If I close it and select it again it's reverted to the old-style Windows 2000 looking Search Companion.

Once that's happened I can only get the XP one back again by logging off and on again, but again it then only works once.

As I said, this is happening on both my XP installations, one of which has only KB4056615 and KB4056941 installed, and the other of which has the Office and .NET updates as well.

I do have Windows Search 4.0 installed on both machines. I've checked all the relevant registry settings and they are all fine.

I of course had a nasty feeling this was a consequence of installing KB4056615!

I uninstalled the updates, but the problem didn't go away.

Is this happening for anyone else?

    :dubbio:

I don't know if this will help you much, Dave, but I'll let you know my setup.  I've had the Search service disabled long ago in an effort to both speed up and secure my pc a little more.  However, I do use the Search Dog.  Is that the Companion?  I forget it's name, but I think that's what you're asking.  Anyway, in that configuration, that works for me.  I used the lil doggy to help find the ntfs.sys files to swap out after the KB4056615 update.

OK, I've tried formatting the USB stick as NTFS, and I'm now also getting the error message if I try to copy a file to it.
Frankly I don't think I'm going to lose any sleep over this as long as that's the only problem caused by the NTFS.SYS update.
I can't see that I would ever need the stick formatted to anything other than FAT32, which seems to work fine.
    :)

That's the only problem I've seen.  Is that the only problem?  That I don't know.  I'd bet you're right, but I'm going to error on the side of caution for now...even though I'm mixing KB's to do it.  :)

The only options I'm being offered to format my USB stick are FAT32 or exFAT.
I don't see any reason to format it to NTFS, which I assume I could perhaps do with Windows 10?
The only reason to do that as far as I can see would be if I needed to put a file on it that was bigger than 4GB, and I can't see that ever happening!
    :)

Those were my only format option too from XP.  I formatted on my Win 10 machine for testing.  My concern was getting permissions errors in general when I had not gotten any with the older NTFS.SYS.

SD73 and Den - I just successfully copied a pdf from a folder on the XP to a folder on the Win 7 64-bit.  I did that using My Network Places on the XP, and the copying and pasting was done at the XP keyboard.

The hard drives of the XP and the Win 7 Pro 64-bit are NTFS.

Do you think this means that I don't have an issue with the KB?

Am I free at last?  Will this month of January NEVER END??

It sounds like your test is what dencorso's PC failed so you may be in luck.  But if you do get a USB handy, I'd be interested to hear how that goes too.

SD73 - Thanks.  You gave me an idea: I plugged two in and just going to Properties showed that they were formatted FAT32.  (Won't reformat them because they have some files I want.)

I have other USB sticks and will try this later.

However, earlier today, on the XP machine, using My Network, I copied a file from a nearby Win 7 64-bit machine and pasted it into the XP machine, successfully.  But that's not the same, is it?

The main test to try IMO is copying a file too the USB stick.  That's when I got the error.  However, I did not try any copies from network shares.  I'm not sure of what results I'd have gotten.  I suppose you could try going the other way and copying files to the NTFS volume on your Win 7 machine.

SD73 - dumb tourist question - how can I tell whether a USB stick is formatted NTFS?     And not stripes, houndstooth or (heaven forbid) plaid?

You could get in Disk Manager and check or just right click on the drive in Explorer and Format from your WIndows 8 or newer PC and choose NTFS.  I'm not sure if you get the NTFS option on USB sticks in XP, but you could check that first if that's what you have.   Anyway, then you can do your copy checks.

Nah. It's just way slower than usual... nothing to worry about, though. OTOH, here you go:

    KB969262.pdf

Thanks!  I actually found the 5.1.2600.5782 driver.  The link below is what I used if anyone else is looking for it.  My virus scanners found it clean and multiple websites I checked said they are reliable.  It installed as you would expect a KB to install.

Yes. it's in the $NtUninstallKB4056615$ folder (which may be hidden). After you revert the 5.1.2600.7392 version to the 5.1.2600.5512 version by hand, then you can apply, if you want, KB969262 (here, too, the KB article is gone but the actual HotFix remains available by request from MS) to get to 5.1.2600.5782. But this last step is optional.

Thanks!  I did get it working prior to see your suggestion with the ntfs.sys from the \cache folder.  After I saw your post I tried your link, but it looks like good ole webarchive may have lost the actual file.  Never goes beyond "Accepting" the terms for the download.  I figured it would be good to have as a backup until/when a good update becomes available.  That said, my older version seems to have stopped those Security problems when copying.

Even having reversed ntfs.sys, myself, that's my take on it and the reason I kept the newst kernel files.
If, and when, MS releases a newer version, then I'll update them again. But until I observe any issue with the kernel files, I'm keeping them.

I've done a little more checking.  Something is up with my NTFS as well.  Dave you may want to double check some usb sticks.  I tried copying files to the drive and got some "Security ID" errors and could not complete.  Is there a backup of my NTFS driver already on my PC I could use?  I have a Linux partition on it I could do the copy from.

It looks like I have an NTFS in my cache folder as 5.1.2600.5512.  Is that desirable or is there a newer version I should use?  Atari88XL says he's got 5.1.2600.5782.

So after my PC successfully found on its own the 3 .Net Updates, and the 2 processor related updates this month (I had to force through the #615kb) I decided to let the machine run some more.  After about 3 days it found the above mentioned KB's on it's own from the MU.  I wonder why it missed them the first time around?

Well, I installed the final one for me, KB4056615, which was a bit worrisome from heinoganda's posts.
(I did not download it directly from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=posready.  When I rebooted yet again, the yellow shield indicated it was downloaded and ready to install.  Go figure.)

Good news is that NTKRNLPA.EXE and NTOSKRNL.EXE have now upgraded to version 5.1.2600.7392 (with modification date 12/5/2017).  Also:
ATMFD.DLL is now version 5.1.2.253 (modified date 12/13/17)
NTFS.SYS is also version 5.1.2600.7392 (with modification date 12/5/2017).

Bad news is that a svchost, exe continues to use 50% of the CPU (with "Memory Usage" of 228,516 K ).
(In the Task Manager processes list, I also see wuauclt.exe with zero use of the CPU but with 199,292 K of Memory Usage.  My experience used to be that wuauclt.exe  would eventually disappear after a few minutes when it wasn't update time.  Is it a clue to the svchost issue?)

So, half of my XP frontal cortex has gotten fall-down drunk.  What to do?

I'd say you've reached the point of turning off that Auto Update feature.  Heinoganda's mentioned that to me a few months back and I haven't had issues since aside from manually having to run Microsoft Update from IE8.  The Auto feature is a nice convenience when it works...but those days have gone.  Maybe one day we'll get a 3rd party Updater similar to the ones I've mentioned above, but for my foreseeable future it'll just be manually downloading from the catalog and installing.  It's not really that huge a hassle and it puts an end to your high CPU usage.

Seems as if your system miss one or more of "troublesome updates". I suggest you to switch WU/MU to "off" via the Control Panel, reboot, then use MBSA to check for missed updates. KB4056615 and KB4056941 aren't "troublesome".

I've followed this advice too as it seems to be the best answer for a frustrating issue.  I do wonder however if we could get one of the Update utilities out there adapted to our systems?  For instance, Win 10 has wumt_x64 and I've seen Get WSUS Content .NET 2.8.0.1  a 32 bit utility that does not appear to have an option for XP Embedded.  Here's the link to the 32 Bit Utility.  http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/get_wsus_content_net.html

I have installed all available January patches, 2 security and 3 .NET updates, all went fine and is updated to proper version numbers.

CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (Merom) 2.00GHz, so for now I believe in Intel  that this one is not affected with that potential Meltdown+Spectre attack.

But where is January Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009, did I miss it somehow?

Also, thanks Dencorso for digging out that old hal.dll KB951126 update. :)

Niko32, have you double checked your kernel files?  My PC that also has an FSB processor appeared to install fine, but I later learned that my kernel files weren't overwritten.  Check your Windws\System32 directory for NTKRNLPA.EXE & NTOSKRNL.EXE with 12/5/17 install dates.  In my case I used the installation switch mentioned earlier in this thread to force the install and it worked well for me.  You may want to exercise caution though before you go forward with that as some have had issues with the newer kernel.

Thanks to experts here, it all makes sense.

Subject to anyone pulling me back from edge of cliff, on my XP with Office 2003 and (for the moment) trouble-causing Avast, I shall be installing only:

    • First, manually:  Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978)
    • Then, using the shield or MU:
      • 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 4 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054173)

      • 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 2.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054178)

      • 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 3.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4055229)

    • NOT INSTALLING YET (due to Avast file-copy problems clarified by heinoganda):  KB4056615 and KB4056941

    • Nothing to install for the Office 2003

But ... I wouldn't MIND if everyone else went FIRST and let me know if it's ... safe.

HEY - does the Avast annoyance interfere with the good updates (my first four above)?  Heinoganda - what do you think?

I got tired of waiting for MU.  I waited a respectful 8 hours out of courtesy for it to do it's thing and I lost patience.  Anyway, I manually installed the 3 .Net updates and nothing else.  The first 2 took about 5 or so minutes each.  The last one took probably about 20 minutes, but no problems to report and it rebooted fine.
