  1. Hiya Gang!  It's been a long while since I've been around.  I kind of figured things would have winded down with XP by now, but it looks like the faithful troops have been keeping it alive and breathing, and I'm happy to see it!  I've been plugging away with my old XP system since the big update shut down.  What have I missed?  Are we now getting new updates?  Is there a thread or post someone could direct me to, to get me caught up on what happened?  I'm not sure if I should be getting any new updates or leave well enough alone.

Always remember Dibya that those criticising your work, usually unjustifiably as the issues have been caused by them, almost certainly wouldn't have been able in their wildest dreams to do what you've done.
Please don't let a few id*** stop you sharing your work, the vast majority really appreciate your efforts I promise!

I'm just another one of us in support of your work, Dibya.  I think most all of us are happy to hear someone is keeping the XP mantle alive.  And I for one would be happy to use any of your updates you release as a means of keeping my system safe and secure.

  3. I am using RealVNC.  It's all in the same LAN so no NAT'ing on my end.  They may have a cloud solution too, but I haven't used it and if they do it may not be compatible with their legacy products.  You'll have to check.  As we're finding out, going the XP route and sticking with it is just going to keep getting more and more of a challenge.  Good luck.

  4. I've been using the venerable free version of VNC.  They have their last working XP update still posted last I checked and you can use a more recent version for you master pc if it's a more modern o/s.  I am not using it for a 2 way communication, but that's because I don't need that.  You may want to check it out yourself to see if you can run both from your xp side.  I suspect you can, but it's not something I've ever needed.

  5. Thanks for your input

Glad you solved it. I forgot that the option may vary or even not exist under different desktop environments. I only use KDE3 or Trinity, which are not common these days.

Thanks for your input.  I'm glad it was solvable with a relatively easy fix.   It never occurred to me to make the Linux/Windows connection to the problem until I posted the question.

The latest version of MBAE is 1.13.1.63. ;)

Any word on how well this works with our XP systems?  I've been looking at hardening up mine a bit since our patches stopped and I used to have a good relationship with this stuff until one of the more recent patches broke it.

I've run into this a couple of times. Somewhere under your Linux Date/Time or Regional settings there should be a checkbox for "System Clock set to UTC." Clearing this should set Linux to the Windows-style behavior of setting the system clock to Local Time.

Unfortunately, Linux Mint 19.1 didn't have a little check that I could find.  I went with the procedure in the above link.

1-put the real time clock on the motherboard into local time. Linux will store the time in local time, just like Windows does:

        timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 --adjust-system-clock

2-To check your current settings, run:

        timedatectl

    * If you ever want to undo this change, run the following command:

       timedatectl set-local-rtc 0 --adjust-system-clock

Thank you.  I will have to check that out.  Even with the registry hack the above method reverted back to the wrong time.

I'm aware of this problem when i dual boot linux... windows stores in local time and linux stores in UTC which conflicts.
Unfortunately, I do not have a solution to offer.

I *THINK* I found the solution.  And it's thanks to you mentioning you have the same dual boot issue so I'll share this with you to see if the fix works for you as well if you'd like to try.  The info was at this link and listed as working with Windows 7.  It works for us old XP'rs as well it appears.  They also have a Linux sided solution but you'd have to repeat that procedure when Daylight Savings Time occurs.

    https://www.howtogeek.com/323390/how-to-fix-windows-and-linux-showing-different-times-when-dual-booting/

1- Navigate to the following key in the left pane of the registry editor:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation

2- Right-click the “TimeZoneInformation” key and select New > DWORD Value.

    3-Name your new value RealTimeIsUniversal.

4-Double-click the RealTimeIsUniversal value you just created, set is value data to 1, and click “OK”.

5- You’re now done, and you can close the Registry Editor. Windows will store the time in UTC, just like Linux does.

*If you ever want to undo this change, return to this location in the registry, right-click the RealTimeIsUniversal value you added, and delete it from your registry.

  10. So I've noticed an issue for the last few months.  I figure I'll run it past the usual suspects while I still have the chance.  My XP machine is a dual boot setup.  I usually run it in Linux Mint where I don't notice the problem.  However when I boot into XP on occasion it will have the wrong time by 7 hours in the future.  The timezone is setup correctly.  I've tried changing time servers and that does not appear to have helped.  I don't think it's the cmos battery as I haven't notice the problem while I'm in Linux.  After I do a re-sync with the Time Server it does get back on track.  Any ideas?

Hey stragglers who won't leave even when the band and caterer are gone and there's nothing but empty bottles rolling around the floor --

What do you think about < THIS > ?

Will this excellent team of génies manqués start a new thread for Win 7?

Dude, I can't leave.  Even if it's just to come here for a monthly XP'ers reunion.  I'll be hanging on as long as possible.  I've made some good backups using macrium reflect that should keep me in business in a worst case scenario event.  Other than that, if there were a dang easy way we could incorporate our thread with a monthly dues to get those corporate updates they're still publishing I'd be doing the happy dance.

    Hey patching tribe!

I'm making my regular backup, just to be prepared for any trouble with updates now. So just asking once again, to be triple sure - are Ferbruary patches ok to be installed now? KB4487085-v2 looks safe?

v2 did the trick for me.  I had no issues with the Office updates either;  however, I'm using the 2003 version.

Dear guinea pigs friends – Now that KB4487085 has disappeared from the list, are all the other updates OK, including Office 2003 and 2007 Compatibility?

Has anyone actually run them without problems?

By the way, most of the Askwoody website is devoted to bad updates from MS (although only for later OSs).  MS has gotten quite bad about testing them.

    Many thanks.

Glnz, the only one that gave me a problem was KB447085.  I'm using Office 2003 with all the other updates offered this month and everything works fine.  Dave-H has a more recent version of Office he said got bricked when some of the Office related updates were applied.

I got 0x80072F8A today too. From the experience (not sure whether they are the same error number) before, the problem is from https connection error. Last time I used a https proxy and solved it. This time I tried unchecking "check certificate revocation" setting and it passed too (no proxy, only TLS1.1 and 1.2 enabled). I wonder which one is the ultimate solution to WU|MU error.

The tick trick worked like a charm for me.  Many thanks to heinoganda for coming up with the solutions!

Dont most of these issues we’ve had affect POSready as well? From what i remember running it, they did. And yeah, I’ve tried last known config. And its a laptop, you can’t exacty take out the video card.

I’ve given up on this install, my new, faster hard drive is coming in a couple days, and then we’ll have take 2 when i reinstall onto it

Sorry, I missed that you were working on a laptop.  heinoganda, who is a rock star here had another solution for you to try too.   If it were me, I'd try his method before doing the hd swap, but of course it's your call.  Good luck!

  16. Something I forgot to ask the group yesterday.  When I went to the MU website to check for updates I got a security messages that prevented me from proceeding.  This is even after I manually installed the IE8 update first and ran the Roots Certificate batch file.  I ended up downloading the updates from another computer and loading them that way.  Were any of you able to use the MU through IE8?

Certainly a good idea, but it shouldn't be necessary. Windows updates should not completely hose an operating system.

We're treading in largely uncharted waters, Jack.  We're using POS updates with plain Jane XP boxes...not for the faint of heart for sure.  I'm actually pretty surprised we've gotten as far as we have with as few issues we've experienced.  That's largely due to the talented crew we have here.  Have you tried a Last Known Good boot?  I'm betting it's your video driver conflicting with KB4487085.  If that doesn't work I'd try pulling your video card and let it boot without one.  If you have a spare card I'd try that next, otherwise I'd reinstall your original and hope for the best.
