  1. Hello! You are right. BTW, there are also USB sound cards available ... OT: There are also VIA (VN896) chipset based laptops available that IMHO may be compatible with Windows 98: Fujitsu Siemens V3515 series: http://geizhals.at/a262791.html (T2450 Core Duo, 1 GB RAM, XP Pro: 700 EUR) http://geizhals.at/a262795.html (Celeron M 520, 512 MB RAM, Linux: 500 EUR) Regards, Roman
  2. Hello! IMHO you will have to choose a motherboard with VIA chipset. I would try: 1. ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA for Intel LGA 775 CPU (Kentsfiels, Conroe, ...) http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=4CoreDual-VSTA (VIA PT880 Ultra chipset) BTW, "Dual" means that it supports: both DDR and DDR2 and both AGP and PCI-express 2. ASUS M2V for AMD AM2 CPU http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&model=1171 (VIA K8T890) Together with single core Athlon 64 4000+ rev. F3 processor that would be IMHO very fast PC for the price: http://eclipseoc.com/index.php?id=3,82,0,0,1,0 (there is a nice photo of the CPU in the above review ) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRevie...N82E16819103868 There is also an interesting Intel 865PE based motherboard for LGA 775 CPUs: 3. ASRock ConRoe865PE http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Mode...oe865PE&s=n Good luck, Roman

  6. What's the error message? IIRC there are problems with OEM versions ... BTW, two days ago I was able to upgrade my friend's PC from Windows 98 to Windows 98SE by renaming the following files: win.com -> win.ada winver.exe -> winver.ada http://www.thpc.info/dual/su0168.html http://www.geocities.com/~budallen/suwin.html I've also renamed the following files before starting setup config.sys -> config.ada autoexec.bat -> autoexec.ada After setup I recommend to apply Autopatcher 98 (you have to manually select Native USB drivers) Regards, Roman
  7. BTW, here is also older non-RAID version: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...p;ProductID=663 http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/ HTH, Roman
  8. Hello! Have you tried to install Windows 98 in non-ACPI mode ?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q186111/ With above command line option, APM system device will be installed instead of ACPI. http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=116 Windows 9x/ME have problems with newer versions of ACPI (especially with enhanced ACPI APIC: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/sysperf/apic.mspx Hint - you can change installed Windows PC from ACPI to APM by thy following registry hack:http://www.physik.uni-freiburg.de/~zwerger...aio/acpieng.htm BTW, in Windows 2k/XP, APM is enabled by using "Standard PC" HAL: http://www.staudio.de/kb/english/2000xp/index.html Regards, Roman

  11. Hello! Thanks for the www.laptopvideo2go.com link! Their NVAML.INF located there http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/index.php?dr...ype=1&dir=1 has also the following descriptions: NVIDIA&DEV_0146.DeviceDesc="GeForce Go 6200 TE/6600 TE go" NVIDIA&DEV_0148.DeviceDesc="GeForce Go 6600" NVIDIA&DEV_0167.DeviceDesc="GeForce Go 6200" NVIDIA&DEV_0168.DeviceDesc="GeForce Go 6250" for the following devices %NVIDIA&DEV_0146.DeviceDesc% = NV30, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0146 %NVIDIA&DEV_0148.DeviceDesc% = NV30, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0148 %NVIDIA&DEV_0167.DeviceDesc% = NV30, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0167 %NVIDIA&DEV_0168.DeviceDesc% = NV30, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0168 I will try to add information about Go 7300 into inf and we will see ... Regards, Roman
  12. Wow, thanks for prompt reply! Well, I will try to apply your trick to Windows 98SE drivers. I suspect that there will be problems because Go 7300 is PCI-Express. Moreover, it has a feature called TurboCache: http://www.nvidia.com/page/turbocache.html I wonder if GeForce (Go) 6200 TurboCache PCI Express is working in Windows 98SE??? Regards, Roman
  13. Hello! Tomorrow I will probably setup new ASUS A6Km http://www.asus.com.tw/products4.aspx?mode...2=24&l3=134 It has chipset SIS756+SIS964L which AFAIK is compatible with 98SE ... Maybe even USB 2.0 will work with Maximus Decim drivers: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43605 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=69192 The problem is the graphics card - can I force NVIDIA drivers to recognize GeForce Go 7300 ? http://www.nvidia.com/page/go_7300.html Thanks, Roman EDIT: Maximus Decim drivers mentioned above are of course USB mass storage drivers. For SIS USB controller the driver that could work is the one made by Orangeware: http://www.doubleh.com.tw/dh-page/download.htm
  14. Hello It's not the same as 939DUAL-SATA2, which has different audio chip: 939DUAL-SATA2: Realtek 850 939Dual-VSTA: C-Media CM6501 (HD Audio - that's why it's Vista Premium Ready - http://www.asrock.com/news/vista-01.html ) AFAIK there is no HD Audio driver for Windows 98SE. How is this audio chip recognized in your PC? Regards, Roman
  15. Hello! Windows NT 3.51 is the best Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/n...p.mspx?mfr=true http://pclt.cis.yale.edu/pclt/OPSYS/NT.HTM Regards, Roman
  16. Hello! There is another option... Maybe IBM will buy the source code and open source it: http://www.scitechsoft.com/news/press/sale_of_snap.html Or maybe Google will buy it for their GoogleOS ... Regards, Roman
  17. Hello! You are correct. Maybe I'm biased because I do have problems with Error Event 11 (but this is Windows XP.SP2!!!) with my ASRock K8-Combo-Z (ULi M1689). http://www.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/ultimat...0;t=004343;p=13 When starting W98.SE (multiple boot) I have to disconnect my SATA disk before powering on my PC ... http://forums.ocworkbench.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=55814 Regards, Roman
  18. Hello! According to this web page: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?model=K8V-MX windows 98SE is supported BTW, I recommend max 512 MB RAM and PATA disk smaller than 137 GB! Roman
  19. Hello! Great! BTW, there are many threads about max memory and Windows 98SE. What is the maximum memory for Windows ME? Roman
  20. Hello! Here are some hints (from my experience when installing Windows 98SE on Intel 875 motherboard) 1. 512 MB RAM - is this single module or two 256 MB sticks configured as dual-channel memory. In this case try with just with 256 MB 2. Have you tried to disable LAN. For example, in the Intel case I had to use additional PCI NIC until I found the solution: http://support.intel.com/support/network/a...b/cs-009346.htm 3. In fact, try to disable as many devices as possible in BIOS. Maybe there are some subtle IRQ problems ... 4. Force Windows 98 to be installed as Standard PC (instead of ACPI machine) 5. Try to change AGP BIOS settings if possible 6. Try to install Windows ME Good luck, Roman
