  1. Does anyone else work with MBR +2TB hard disks? 3. Here I published a test of partition programs working with GPT https://msfn.org/board/topic/181911-read-gpt-hard-disk-on-windows-xp/page/3/#findComment-1249366
  4. I put together the two screenshots previously published with DMDE, to be able to compare them more easily. AS INTERNAL HARD DISK AS USB HARD DISK The surprise comes now. I leave Windows XP with this Logilink USB adapter and start Windows Seven with the GPT hard disk The result is the same. This Logilink USB adapter that I am testing with GPT works well with MBR +6Tb in both Windows XP and Windows Seven and NT10 (always formatted by the same one, of course. If I format GPT with the same it also works). The surprise is that I have bought 2 new USB adapters that do not work as MBR or GPT +2Tb in Windows XP and in Windows Seven they have recognized this GPT hard disk perfectly. I have also tested these 2 new adapters with a 5Tb MBR hard disk which was working perfectly with the Logilink adapter on all the operating systems. The new adapters do not recognize their partitions properly on any system.
  5. I'm surprised!!! Hard drives have not made any noise for many years. I only hear them on Western Digital.
  6. I'm posting the screenshots with the DMDE program that @jaclaz mentioned for comparison because if it is formatted as an internal disk, the USB adapter does not recognize the partitions. The first thing that caught my attention as an internal disk is that the program says that only 1.4 TiB are available and that the data is at risk. This is similar to what HardDisk Sentinel indicated In the Disk Manager, it caught my attention that the partitions say 100% free space available. This is the capture of the sectors made by DMDE. This does not recognize partitions correctly, unlike other programs. In contrast to what Eassos Disk genius indicated, which says that everything is correct and that there are no errors. NOW I SHOW THE CAPTURE WITH DMDE CONNECTING THE HARD DRIVE BY USB, THE PARTITIONS ARE NO LONGER ACCESSIBLE BY WINDOWS XP BUT, UNLIKE PREVIOUSLY, NOW DMDE SEEMS TO SHOW THEM No partition is recognized by Disk Manager Disk Genius At first glance it seems that DMDE works the other way around, when other programs recognize the partitions this one does not recognize them and when others recognize them this one does see them. (as hidden partitions) see next post to compare both...
  7. You say that Disk Manager recognized the hard drive connected directly to the SATA port. This is important. Do you think it is safe to try it with Paragon Partition Manager 15 Professional x86 v10.1.25.779 without losing data? I don't know exactly what a caddy is. Is it a box to connect the hard drive to the eSATA port? I'm looking at what model of eSATA adapter you bought, but sorry I don't see if you finally say... What model you have? you can't get a cable and power supply to connect the hard drive directly to the eSATA port? Most likely the problem could be the box.
  8. In this post I intend for us all to make a list of devices that allow reading MBR +2Tb hard disks with Windows XP SP3. Also supporting GPT testing. It is known that working with MBR +2Tb hard disks is possible in almost all operating systems since Windows 2000 SP3: -Windows XP (only since SP2?) -Windows 2003 -Windows Seven (only since SP1) -Windows Eight -Windows 10 -GNU/Linux (only since the new 2008 kernel) -MAC??? (I have not tried it) Currently +2Tb hard disks usually have a physical sector of 4096 bytes, but firmware emit a 512 bytes emulation (512e) to the operating system. In XP these disks are seen as logical and physical sector 512, this way XP will not work as an MBR or GPT disk . In theory, some +2Tb drives work on XP as MBR or GPT because the adapter firmware or the driver hard disk translate the logical sectors to 4096 bytes instead of 512 bytes. It's not really a size question, it's a sectors question. MBR and GPT on XP can only access a limited number of sectors that represent LBA 32 bits (2^32). (4,294,967,296 sectors x 512 bytes = 2,147,483,648 KiB) If the sectors are 512 bytes the limit is 2TiB, if the sectors are 4096 bytes the limit is 16 TiB. Although there are still many questions to be answered. Can XP access a hard disk with 4096 bytes physical sectors? Supposedly the 512e emulation is established because systems prior to Windows Eight are not capable of working with 4096 bytes physical sectors. So why can XP access a disk with 4096 bytes logical sectors? There are also other limits, I have found that some USB adapters are limited to 4Tb in MBR and these same ones to 5Tb in GPT. ¡¡¡Caution: If we format a 512e hard disk +2TiB with an adapter that reports 4096 bytes logical sectors to the system, this will only be accessible from adapters that reports 4096 bytes.!!! ¡With -2TiB my adapters always identify the disk in XP as a physical and logical sector 512 bytes, although their physical sector is 4096 bytes. This does not represent a problem compatibility if the disk logical sector is 512e! ¡But it could happen that some adapters read all hard disks as a logical sector 4096 bytes! Typically, the adapter detects the hard disk physical sector, and if it occupies 4096 bytes, the adapter translates the logical sectors to 4096 bytes. If the hard disks physical sector measures 512 bytes, there is no logical sector translation. Perhaps the problem has been solved with internal GPT, but I still want to test it further. Also, GPT does not allow compatibility with Windows 2000. https://msfn.org/board/topic/181911-read-gpt-hard-disk-on-windows-xp/page/23/#findComment-1276273 Please add the devices that you have tested and their limits. That way we will not have to buy blindly and then find out that this do not work. ¡¡¡If you also know the chip model it uses, it is important to mention it!!! Or mention the device Hardware ID listed in the device manager (USB Adapter is in USB Mass Storage Device). Attention: -Some devices with updated firmware lose the ability to translate logical sectors to 4096 bytes. -Some devices only translate AF disks (Advanced Format). 9. crack, crack, crack, crack, crack, crack, crack... It's dead. This is the noise that started to sound on the Seagate hard drive model ST3000DM0001. Now if I connect the hard drive I hear some beeps, as if the hard drive had an internal speaker. It is true that some models can be turned back on, but this is not the case. Do you think I can update the firmware once it's dead? The disk is recognized by Windows, although it doesn't appear in disk manager. The problem occurred after trying a new USB adapter, but the crack came with the previous adapter. As for the virus, it's clear that it has nothing to do with it. But by slowing down the file explorer for so long, after deleting and copying folders, it caused the power to fail during this time. I haven't been able to find out what the virus was, I can only say that when I clicked on copying more than 20 files it took 15 minutes to react before I could click on paste. There was no problem if I clicked on copying less than 20 files. I gave up using Seagate hard drives years ago. I've never had a Maxtor hard drive fail me. I bought Seagate again because they bought Maxtor. I don't know what hard drive brand to buy, maybe Toshiba. I would never ever buy a Western Digital, all the ones I've tried have failed!!! I don't know how many hours of use it had, I was able to open Cristal Disk and see that there were no major errors, but I didn't find the number of hours tab at that time. I only saw that there were no major errors. I used this Seagate 3Tb frequently between 2014 and 2017 and kept it connected until 2019. But I always used it via USB 2.0 so its use should not have been strained. I find it hard to believe that if I had not made the security copy 2 days earlier he would have died. Since 2019 I have only used it once last June and now. Let us pray, as everyone knows, for his soul.
  10. It's been a while, but I'm finally getting to it. @jaclaz Let's recall the problem... A GPT hard drive located as an internal SATA drive is formatted from Windows and then the partitions on this drive are not recognized correctly if it is connected with a USB adapter. The same thing happens in reverse. I have started the GPT Fdisk program, which seems to have several names (Gdisk) and I don't know how to continue to compare the GPT partition table. I type the letter "p" which according to the tutorial shows the partitions and then the program closes. https://www.rodsbooks.com/fixparts/ Just now I have encountered a similar problem with MBR. I have bought a new USB adapter and the partitions on the hard drive formatted with my previous USB adapter are not recognized in their correct size with the new USB adapter. EDIT: I start it manually from CMD and I see that I have to add a letter to the P command. I don't understand, this would not show the partitions. And it says MBR not GPT I'm putting the screenshots with DMDE and other programs below.
  11. From the comment you wrote in this post https://msfn.org/board/topic/181911-read-gpt-hard-disk-on-windows-xp/page/15/#findComment-1260709 I thought that the problem of the hard drive not appearing in the Disk Manager had been solved. (there are many posts you have made and it was not clear for me) I thought that the problem you had now was that the hard drive did not work well with +2TiB, which is what the driver contained in Paragon Partition Manager 15 Professional x86 v10.1.25.779 could solve. If the hard drive does not appear in the Disk Manager I think it is because the eSATA card or the USB adapter is not compatible with +2TiB hard drives in Windows XP at the firmware level. I have found that the Seagate 5 Tb external USB hard drive does not work with its case as GPT in Windows XP, not appearing in the disk manager, but removing the hard drive from the case and putting in a compatible GPT +5Tb USB adapter the hard drive does work. What USB adapter model do you have?

  13. I have an old backup on a 3Tb MBR drive. I used this drive from 2014-2019 with no problems and put it away in a drawer that year. It's a Seagate that some call the sudden death drive I used this drive again with no problems for 1 day last summer and now I'm using it again to test if new USB adapters work on MBR +2TiB hard drives. One problem I sometimes have with USB adapters, especially with this hard drive, is that it suddenly disconnects from Windows. The drives stop showing up in My Computer, as if it lost power for 1 second and then shows up again. Well, I thought I'll leave a few updated files on this hard drive. So on a FAT32 partition I deleted 4 folders and pasted a new folder, but before the operation was completed the hard drive became very slow and subsequently disconnected. OK, this has happened to me many times before. So I proceed to perform a CHKDSK, but surprise, it tells me that almost all the folders are unintelligible and it wants to delete them. Since it is an old backup I already have the files, I don't need to recover them one by one, but I would like to recover the complete copy of the files that I had in this 500 GiB partition. Since I make incremental copies I can't format and restore them from my current copy which is larger, I wouldn't know which files were in the old backup. My question is, would restoring a copy of the FAT table work or would it be more annoying or would nothing happen? Any other advice? I think that the hard drive became slow because I had a virus in Windows XP that I have already removed. But the hard drive keeps disconnecting suddenly too many times. On other hard drives using the same USB adapter this problem doesn't happen as often. I need some advice on how to restore all those folders that CHKDSK says are unintelligible. Thanks...
  14. Please comment if I've missed any issues. @Dave-H please comment when you try the new driver on eSATA drive. By the way, one thing I'm thinking... why am I using the Paragon drivers? Was there any problem with the Windows 2003 drivers, except that they must be installed correctly? Edit: There are several threads that question whether Windows 2003 drivers can write data above +2TiB. I'll have to test it. https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=79711&start=40

Go to start + run, type "regedit" and search HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\gpt_loader Here change the value of ImagePath which says: system32\DRIVERS\gpt_loader.sys by system32\DRIVERS\GPT_LO~1.SYS and then reboot. Problem solved. ------------------------------------------- Issue "CHKDSK does not work during Windows startup": -All versions of Paragon drivers. In case of a file system error the boot will say that FAT32 and exFAT partitions are RAW. On NTFS partitions it will proceed to perform CHKDSK, but it will be invalid. Solution "CHKDSK": Once Windows boots you have to run chkdsk manually. Write down the drive letter and when Windows XP starts, perform from CMD a CHKDSK drive: /f ---------------------------------------------- Issue "External USB enclosures not compatible with Windows XP": Some external hard disks +2TB do not work in Windows XP even if Windows XP is enabled to read GPT disks, because the enclosure is not compatible with XP. For example, Seagate 5TB. Solution "for external enclosures": Change the hard drive to a compatible enclosure. which one? Or use a USB adapter for SATA disks compatible with Windows XP. which one? Some external USB adapters are limited to 5TB at GPT. It is best to initialize the hard disks connected directly to the motherboard. If you initialize the hard disk from some USB adapters, the hard disk may not be readable later if connected directly to the motherboard and vice versa. ---------------------------------------------- Issue "eSATA drives, the Paragon GPT driver does not work". After installing the driver the drive does not appear in the Windows disk manager. Solution "eSATA drives": If an external "caddy" enclosure is used, it may be incompatible with +2TB hard disks on Windows XP. Try connecting the hard drive disk to the eSATA port with an external power supply. It is also possible that if the hard drive has been initialized by connecting it directly to the motherboard, the eSATA adapter will not be able to read it and vice versa. eSATA ports also do not work in AHCI mode. One way to enable IDE mode support is to connect the caddy to a PCIExpress card with SATA ports that has a physical switch to enable "IDE mode" or "no-boot mode". ------------------------------------------------ Issue "new USB drivers cannot be installed after installing Windows 2003 GPT drivers" After installing these drivers incorrectly, when connecting a new USB stick the wizard to add new hardware will not appear and the units cannot be installed manually. 16. In my case I have it connected as an internal hard drive and I have no problem in XP if I boot without the driver, XP recognizes it as a device but does not show the drives or the hard drive in the disk manager. You can try disconnecting it. I recommend uninstalling the previous driver and restarting the system. I think the sector size is not relevant in this case.
  17. The conclusion I've come to is that the other versions are limited to 2 TiB. That's why the other versions didn't read my FAT32 partitions, since they're just over 2 TiB. Paragon Partition Manager 15 makes different changes to the registry. I'm working without any problems at the moment.
  18. I currently have w2000-XP-Seven-10 multiboot (Windows 10 is not so unmanageable if you install the Windows 2000 interface with Classic Shell and Retrobar) GPT works perfectly on XP-Seven-10 ANY VERSION OF PARAGON DRIVER 10.5.0.95 DOES NOT WORK GPT on XP only works with Paragon Partition Manager 15 Professional x86 v10.1.25.779!!! I don't know what's changed but the errors don't occur like in the other versions, for example I have access to the FAT32 partitions and with Paragon HFS for Windows 10.5.0.95 the first thing I get at star is a blue screen that doesn't occur with Paragon Partition Manager 15 Professional x86 v10.1.25.779.
  19. I'm back to testing with GPT. Starting from the same point where I left off some time ago. I think I partitioned the 6TB hard drive with Windows Seven and then unfragmented it. https://msfn.org/board/topic/181911-read-gpt-hard-disk-on-windows-xp/page/5/#findComment-1251406 It's working fine on Windows XP (BIOS mode IDE-legacy) with a new installer I found for the Paragon 10.5.0.95 driver. I installed it from Paragon Partition Manager 15 (aka 2015) Professional x86 v10.1.25.779 (2015-09-18) This is the last version that contains Paragon GPT loader, in later versions it is not included. Please suggest me what tests I can perform to verify that it works fine on Windows XP. The disk is divided into 6 partitions. 1-NTFS 1.42 TiB 2-exFAT 1.19 TiB 3-FAT32 107 GiB 4-FAT32 976 GiB 5-FAT32 488 GiB 6-FAT32 1.29 TiB With version 11.0.0.175 the GPT hard drive does not work well for me, Windows XP does not recognize FAT32 partitions.
  20. I'm looking for a color laser printer with a scanner and an automatic feed tray, with drivers compatible with Windows XP at least. Which one do you recommend, new or second-hand? In 2020 I was looking for laser printers in general compatible with Windows 2000/XP and wrote this post: https://msfn.org/board/topic/181283-printers-that-work-with-windows-2000/?do=findComment&comment=1183761 I saw that there were several brands with some new printers with drivers still compatible with Windows XP, such as Canon and Xerox. A curious case is Epson, with old models for sale compatible with Windows 2000 and very expensive. For a while Epson seemed to have no new laser models for sale, now in 2024 I only see a monochrome model and it has drivers for Windows 2000. There are many second-hand models with Windows XP compatible drivers, but I also want it to have an auto-feed scanner. Has anything changed since 2020? If I buy an HP printer without official Windows XP compatible drivers, is it possible to install it on XP with universal drivers? For example, I am looking at the HP COLOR LASER JET PRO M454dn. (sorry, it is not possible to share the HP link for all countries) Then there is the question of how chips like HP's "Security Dynamic" influence this. Is it currently possible to use universal toner cartridges or do they have to be manufactured by the brand?

  22. For Office 2010 I am comparing the updates downloaded with WSUS Offline Update with those downloaded with Whdownloader_0.0.2.4 Does anyone know how to find out what KB corresponds to a .cab file? For example, these two .cab files from 2015 downloaded with WSUS seem obsolete, but I can't confirm it without knowing its KB mso-x-none_C89B258BE86100BE98910F4DE37F04BB7E35D19F.CAB mso-x-none_8FCB7F5EA6BB226E5C3FD7078BB8729D2D3B72C.CAB powerpoint-x-none_311669b8081fa173fbf8feafd32dee0b1cf3acbd.cab powerpoint-x-none_ca1798ae5ed61959c52248d997fc27552cd06698 On the other hand I have consulted in the My Digital Life forum the doubt about the KB4092435. They tell me that it is not obsolete because the latest version KB4504702 has no language variant and therefore must also install the previous version KB4092435 both in the X-None variant and in the language variant. https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/discussion-whd-office-updates.53090/page-18#post-1850023
  23. Regarding Office 2003, I cannot find the Spanish EXE file with KB2760494. In the Microsoft catalog there is a link to the CAB version with forty files. https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB2760494 By extracting the 40 .CAB files, I can see the language code in the properties on the details tab, but I do not see any with the Spanish code ESN or ES or SPA... EDIT: There are not 40 links, there are 41 links. Unfortunately, I only didn't download the file in Spanish. msconv_efb7c52332d941fc3f194e230384e8b9bc0bec85.cab
  24. Yes, you may be right. For .NET Framework is need to edit ExcludeList-dotnet-x64.txt ExcludeList-dotnet-x64.txt and add ndp45- ndp46- ndp47- ndp48- I don't remember well. In general I had no problems with XP incompatible downloads for .NET Framework. These were not downloaded to me although I do have the edited file with the exclusions. However for Office 2003/2007/2010 I think I remember that it is not necessary to add any static exclusion downloads for versions higher than Office 2010. These are not downloaded if the Office 2013, 2016, etc. option is not checked. *Maybe in 64-bit static downloads for Office 2010 @AstroSkipper It may be necessary to edit the .txt files and remove links to Office 2010 higher versions. StaticDownloadLinks-dotnet-x64-xxx.txt StaticDownloadLinks-dotnet-x64-glx.txt *xxx = código de idioma. https://forums.wsusoffline.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9818
