  1. Would it possible to add a Dark Mode to the styles in StartIsBack+ (Windows 8.1) like you have for StartIsBack++ (Windows 10)? The start screen is entirely unusable in 8.1 and with the dark theme I'm using the white start menu background sticks out like a sore thumb.

Here's my new leading candidate for that "if and when" it comes time to say good-bye to Windows

It's nice a distro, that's for sure, but according to distrowatch.com it doesn't support x86_64. Doesn't that seem like an issue?

fifteen minutes before the upgrade the Windows user couldn't imagine Microsoft could just fail like this.

More like the average Windows user. All the power users remember what a disaster Vista and 8 were and knew there are plenty of ways Microsoft could screw it up. And true to form, they did.

I used GWX and it failed. Let it actually install cause wife clicked something so it is not 100%

Did you use the portable version of GWX Control Panel? That's what I used and what is so difficult about using GWX? 5 clicks at most and you're done. You can delete the portable application and never have to use it again and that machine.

Did use Steve thing this time on her's cause he been at this a lot longer, a lot lot lot lot longer. Imagine he just want to get it right and MS will change things we know that

I'm not knocking Steve's ability or is his experience in the industry. What I'm saying is he is basically slandering GWX to get attention for his tool when GWX is completely viable option and IMO, offers a much better and more comprehensive solution that Steve's tool can't match.

WTH ya mean there is no install just run Never 10 thats PORTABLE is it not? No installer

    What do you mean exactly?

In the end, I don't care how people are blocking Windows 10 only that they are.

  4. Umm... what?

GWXControl Panel doesn't do any of that. It doesn't need to be installed either. A portable version is available. It works exactly as advertised and has never nagged me. Not once. Sounds like someone just wants in on the action despite GWX Control Panel being more than enough to block the Windows 10 malware updates.

What's funny is that Steve claims his software is so superior to GWX Control, but doesn't even realize that there's a portable version of it. It's also kind of cute that he thinks Microsoft will obey is small registry tweak when push comes to shove.

  5. It's time for the separation before the divorce.  It's been that time since last year, actually.

I have a feeling that's going to happen at some point. According to NetMarketShare's Feb 2016 data Windows 7 still owns more than 50% of the market despite Windows 10 being available for free since July 29, 2015.

Based on those numbers you'd think at some point Microsoft would have to admit that they're Microsoft Knows BestTM strategy just isn't working. I don't know about anybody else, but it feels like we've been waiting since October 2012 for Microsoft to be like "It's just a prank bro. You thought we were serious?" and release a real successor to Windows 7.

Microsoft has said they never want to go through XP-style holdout again, but I don't think they have a choice. The data suggests that Windows 7 will likely become go through a similar holdout. Plus, the sheer aggressiveness with which they are pushing Windows 10 isn't doing them any favours.

July 29, 2016, will decide Windows 10's fate IMO. Fortunately, if this is how well it does when it's free it should only do worse because there will eventually be a barrier to entry that wasn't there initially.

  6. I don't know if you've encountered this or not Noel, but just a heads up that the Remove Pre-Installed App (Other Than Cortana) section of your ReTweaker doesn't work in Audit Mode.

I would've have PM'd you, but it says you can't receive new PMs so I have to post it here.

  7. Because they're not knowledgeable enough to know any better. You could take literally every techie in the world and even those that aren't techies, but have at least basic Windows computer knowledge, and they'd still be in the minority.

  8. Your goals are the same as my mine. A desktop only, local account, UWA free Windows 10 with UAC disabled.

The reason I was wondering why you disabled Windows Firewall was also because I thought that Sphinx was another front-end for Windows Firewall like TinyWall or Windows Firewall Control and not completely independent firewall software so that's my mistake.

  9. The final spec of the Vulkan graphics API got released, along with beta drivers from AMD, nVidia and Intel.

And all this runs on Windows 7!

If the API catches on, the only attractive feature of W10, DX12, becomes meaningless.

Please let this catch on. I want to see how high and mighty Microsoft is when they can't hide behind DirectX.

  10. Does a new user TODAY have the option to get a 10586 LTSB?

I don't think so. Although I can't say for certain as I don't have an LTSB VM to test on. I'm pretty sure they will be a new LTSB eventually due that branch being called <year> LTSB instead of just LTSB. I'm guessing they'll produce a new LTSB every year or every couple of years.

I found a link that might help: http://www.urtech.ca/2015/08/solved-what-is-windows-10-ltsb-long-term-servicing-branch

  11. What IS the actual LTSB version? Is it Enterprise build 10240?

I don't have a desire to interact with Bott or Kelly.

    -Noel

It's a special branch of the Enterprise version. It's aimed at people who need something more stable system than standard Enterprise as such it only gets security updates and bug fixes and the 10586 update was/is not offered to LTSB clients.

Aside from only security updates the most notable difference between LTSB and standard Enterprise there are no metro apps. No store, no Edge, and it uses the Win32 calculator.

  12. I just looked he has added that. Are you right click Run as Admin?

A minimal set of tools is expected to be available via the current directory

Yes, I'm running it admin as. I tried pathing to with an elevated CMD (Windows Key + X > Command Prompt (Admin)) and standard right click > Run as Admin. Neither works.

I haven't added, deleted, or changed anything in the directory. I only extracted it.

  13. I tried using your 1.2 script on a new VM I just made and I got these error messages.

This is what I got when I redirected the output to a .txt file on the desktop.

ERROR: One or more tools needed by this script cannot be located.

This is what was actually displayed in the elevated CMD window.

    which: no SQLite3 in (.;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\)

I didn't do anything. I just extracted it and tried to run it.

How do you have so little packages in your system? Don't you need more than just those two? In any case I want to know how you managed to properly remove so many because I've found that many packages are locked and can't be removed from an online system.
