Noel, the reason was not about battery (I dont think they ever claimed that either). It was due to performance on low end tablet devices.

I'm not sure how to do it, sorry. I would imagine it's just a theme. I had a windows 7 theme with squared off corners, but there may be a difference. Windows 8 also doesn't play nicely with transparency, not sure if that applies here. You could probably go hunting on deviantart to see if anyone's done it yet.
