  1. Shamgar: All MSXML links you posted are obsolete. 2. Also: 1. If installed WinME explorer.exe + shell32.dll run this: %windir%\SYSTEM\REGSVR32 /I /S %windir%\SYSTEM\SHELL32.DLL 2. If not installed WinME shell32.dll + explorer.exe run this: %windir%\SYSTEM\REGSVR32 /I /S %windir%\SYSTEM\SHDOC401.DLL
  3. Try this:1. If you installed 98SE2ME option 3 [WinME explorer.exe, comdlg32.dll, shell32.dll + webvw.dll] you should merge this REG file into your Registry: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved] "{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}"="Microsoft New Object Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}] @="Microsoft New Object Service" "flags"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}\InProcServer32] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHELL32.DLL" "ThreadingModel"="Apartment" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New] @="{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}" Make sure to change C:\\WINDOWS if different on your computer. 2. If u did not install 98SE2ME option 3 [make sure your shell32.dll file in %windir%\SYSTEM is build 4.72.3812.600 or 4.72.3612.1700] merge this REG file into your Registry: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved] "{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}"="Microsoft New Object Service" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}] @="Microsoft New Object Service" "flags"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}\InProcServer32] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOC401.DLL" "ThreadingModel"="Apartment" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New] @="{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}" Make sure to change C:\\WINDOWS if different on your computer. 4. Exactly MDGx. Eventually hackers will find out how Opera works and find ways to exploit its security flaws, prathapml. Using ANY web browser (whether it's Opera, Mozilla or Firefox) that is several years old is NEVER a good idea as web standards are changing almost constantly and it's best to use the latest releases of web browsers possible. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, what you're saying is right about other browsers. But this one is different.I'm having an old system with Win9x and 32 MB memory, and its been running Opera 5.12 since 4 years. No upgrades, no changes, nothing - its having all the features needed, is quite compatible, and is very quick. I visit all sorts of sites with it, and no security problems yet. Is this enough proof yet? On the other hand, if it was IE, running it for 4 years with ZERO maintenance/updates would be unthinkable! Depends exclusively on which sites you visit, and/or which files u download. In case u don't know: not so popular [YET] browsers like Opera, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, basically all except MS IE [which (still) holds ~ 90% of the market share] do not [YET] have major security issues because they are not [YET] targeted. But this will soon change, because as we all know, Firefox [best example at the moment] popularity is soaring. Same goes for Mac OS X browsers: Camino, Safari and for Linux/UNIX browsers: Firefox, Mozilla, Konqueror, especially now that free Linux is gaining such broad attention. 5. Gape: MS released yesterday Windows 2003 Server SP1 RTM. You know what this means... HTML Help 1.41 is finally out of beta. Hope you can add these files to the next SP 2.0 release. They contain most current MS security patches. Thanks. Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE/ME/NT4 HTML Help v1.41 HHSETUP.DLL, ITIRCL.DLL, ITSS.DLL + HH.EXE + HHCTRL.OCX Update build 5.2.3790.1830 from Windows 2003 SP1 Final (RTM/Gold) [681 KB, English]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/HHUPD.EXE How to install HTML Help 1.41 on Windows 98/98 SE/NT4: Download + install HHUPD.EXE . How to install HTML Help 1.41 on Windows ME: 1. You MUST disable System Restore: open Control Panel -> System -> Performance Tab -> File System -> Troubleshooting area -> check the "Disable System Restore" box -> click OK -> reboot. 2. Download + install CoolKill [797 KB, freeware]: http://www.prowebsitemanagement.com/downloads/coolkill.zip 3. Run COOLKILL.EXE -> right-click on the CoolKill icon in Taskbar Tray -> highlight STMGR.EXE -> left-click on it to terminate this process. 4. Download + install HHUPD.EXE (see above). 5. You may want to reenable System Restore: open Control Panel -> System -> Performance Tab -> File System -> Troubleshooting area -> uncheck the "Disable System Restore" box -> click OK -> reboot.
  6. Many thanks for your appreciation, and glad I could help.2. I've only come up with the blue URL thingy here at this forum for you to understand better how this works; view it if u wish as a customized step-by-step tutorial. Now that you've learned what all this means, I hope u will be able to "decipher" the links @ my web site [and others'] easier. All u need to do is look for the links that pertain to the particular OS you're interested in [example: 98 or 98 SE = see my post above for complete details on how to read Win32 OS versions/builds/releases]. Also, if you recall from my IE patches page [ http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm ] and most of my other web pages, all URLs are in blue, because I try to not change the default unclicked link color which is built into most browsers, to make it easier for all readers. About Tucows [main server is located in the US: http://www.tucows.com/ ]: this is a trademarked web site, and if u read their copyright/license/usage pages, u would notice they don't allow "deep" [direct] linking to their files. As webmaster I must take this in account when I post links to files and respect everybody's copyrights, same as I expect everybody else to respect mine. 3. I've also noticed [thank u erpdude8] that some of the links u point to are "404" [invalid]. Part of my job as webmaster [my site has currently > 130 pages] is to test all links before posting them, to avoid spending more time afterwards with corrections/updates. But I found that 1 of the links u discovered is the fastest and most reliable from my location [sW USA], so I've changed all ie60sp1.exe links to point to it [thank u for your time + effort]: http://downloads.planetmirror.com/pub/micr...sp1/ie60sp1.exe About European servers being more up to date: that's true only for the particular servers u are referring to, I would not generalize. All depends on how often the webmaster(s) update their links/info/etc. I know commercial [for profit] web sites tend to be more up to date, because they depend on their customers to make money. BTW: my site is non-profit, adverts free. I know lots of US servers that are more up to date than most: a good example is MajorGeeks [to my knowledge also non profit, all their adverts barely make up for their maintenance costs + fees]: http://www.majorgeeks.com/ Hint: Australian [.au] servers tend to be slow at times [depending on internet traffic] for US users. So do Taiwanese [.tw] servers. To check the reliability of a particular server: http://www.internettrafficreport.com/ Hope this helps, and thanks for your help.
  7. This has been discussed here before:1. Full IE 6.0 SP1 does install the full browser + all "accesories" [like language packs, WMP, Flash etc] on all Win32 OSes [except XP + 2003 which install newer builds] but think about it for a moment: MS released it way back in August 1992, it does NOT contain ANY patches/fixes/updates, and to my knowledge, since 2002 they have never released ANY service packs, update rollups or whatever u want to call them. So in order to install all current MS IE 6.0 SP1 patches you need to install them either from a web site like mine, by hand, file by file: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm or you can go to windowsupdate.com [and make sure your MS Windows OS has Windows Update + ActiveX enabled] to install all the ones MS has posted there, but they don't have or don't support all the ones I have listed @ URL above, so after allowing windowsupdate.com reboot your computer [so the newly installed patches can take effect] you still need to search the internet for sites like mine to install by hand the ones you don't have. But the catch is if u installed only the ones @ windowsupdate.com it is difficult [especially for somebody who never did this and/or is just learning about his/her computer] and time consuming to hunt down all patches that remain to be installed by hand. So in the long run it is less frustrating to install manually all patches from a web site like mine which posts all links to all current files. As I said before, there are roughly ~ 10 files you need to d/l + install. The catch here is your connection speed. 56K users may have to wait longer [actually a lot longer], but the files windowsupdate.com installs are identical with the ones from web sites like mine [because I link to MS servers], so it does not cut down on d/l time. 2. No matter which web browser u use [i prefer Firefox, but this applies also to Opera, Mozilla, Netscape, Maxthon etc] u MUST have ALL current MS security patches because MS IE is integrated into the Win32 OS, therefore your OS uses a bunch of IE files to access the internet one way or another, even if u never use IE to browse the net. IMHO: the only reason to use IE is to access windowsupdate.com and eventually d/l files from MS web site that require "Genuine MS Windows" [but u must run XP or 2003 for most], because u must have ActiveX enabled for this to work. And don't get me started on how insecure ActiveX is. BTW: Maxthon is only a MS IE 6.xx [6.xx covers all MS IE 6 builds = 6.0 and 6.0 SP1] "skin", and therefore u must have MS IE 6 or newer already installed in order to use Maxthon and the likes: Avant, SlimBrowser, Crazy Browser, NeoPlanet etc. More like this: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#NET And to save a little time: same as installing from windowsupdate.com u don't need to reboot after installing each patch, just install them all and select No/Cancel when it prompts you to reboot/restart Windows at the end of most patch installs when installing by hand. But make sure u d/l only the most recent ones from a web site like mine, because some other sites may have not updated their web pages to delete older/duplicate patches. And even if u have "stripped down" your OS by removing most IE files by the use of IEradicate or 98lite or Windows 98 on CD or Minimal Windows or Nano98 [all linked here: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip98.htm#98L and here: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#FIX ], there still are [very few] IE files without which your OS canNOT function. And those few files need to have their respective patches installed to make sure your computer is as safe as possible. The only case u don't need IE nor its many patches is if u never access the internet, but who can resist the "temptation"? Or switch to MAC OS X or Linux. But [there's always a "but"], as someone here said [i believe it was erpdude8], ALL browsers have or will soon have security flaws and will need patching, no matter the OS. Conclusion: Basically if u use a Win32 OS like 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP or 2003, u need to become familiar with MS patching process, to keep up with all the fixes they keep posting roughly once a month. Hope this helps.
  8. Windows 98 SE does NOT include nor install ZIPFLDR.DLL or dzip*.* or dunzip*.* files. U need MS Plus! for Windows 98 CD or Windows ME Setup CD to install/extract/register ZIPFLDR.DLL. Then u need to install the appropriate security patches from MS web site: * Microsoft Windows ME ZIP Decompression Unchecked Buffer + Recoverable Compressed Folders Passwords ZIPFLDR.DLL Security Vulnerability Fix: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms02-054.mspx Direct download [270 KB, English]: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...6BFCFC147E1.EXE More info: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329048 If trying to install this patch on 98SE, u need to extract the DLL by hand first, then copy it to %windir%\system, and then regsvr32 it. * Microsoft Plus! for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE ZIP Decompression Unchecked Buffer + Recoverable Compressed Folders Passwords ZIPFLDR.DLL Security Vulnerability Fix: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms02-054.mspx Direct download [268 KB, English]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/WIN.../329048USA8.EXE But why bother? ZIPFLDR is a very primitive tool, and can be used only from Windows Explorer right-click context menu [shell]. Better, install a full-fledged (un)archiving tool [most are freeware]: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP that can handle all popular formats from an easy to use interface.
  9. Actually I got over that part where I feel insulted by something like this many years ago, that's why I still keep my web site up, and even have a feedback page. What you need to understand from what I said before is that I try to help people like u who are just learning about their computers all the time, and I do explain these things over and over all the time [without getting frustrated nor insulted], and all this for free in my spare time, because [as you may have noticed] computing + helping others is only 1 of my hobbies. And part of this is also to tell you that if you don't find what u need at my web site, you can always look somewhere else, and I even provide you with links to other help sites I consider to be the best in the business. I had a link to the GreenApple file for a short while, and if I may it was by the "hand" of Google [who some may see as God ] that I found it, but as you may have noticed, that file is only 47 MB, not 77 or 78, which means it does not contain ALL MS IE 6.0 SP1 files, which means not all Win32 [Win32 is general term to cover all MS Windows 32-bit OSes = these include 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003 + Longhorn] users are able to install IE 6.0 SP1 offline [because this is the offline Full Setup option], which means some users [depending on which Win32 OS they are using] will have to be connected to the internet and keep downloading other files from MS, and only after that install IE, which defeats the purpose of a complete offline installation. If u want to install IE online, and keep d/l-ing files from MS, u can always select the Setup [480 KB] option @: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX Like I said before, I'm doing this for quite a while, and by using Google "God" and with the invaluable help of a few great online friends, I managed to find some of the most useful, and weed out not so useful stuff. If u want to d/l all MS IE 6.0 SP1 patches released by MS to date, and posted at: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm I'm presuming u use Win98SE English, therefore I'm listing only files that apply, from newest [top] to the oldest [bottom]: please note that this is an excerpt from SOFTWARE.TXT [part of W95-11D.EXE (freeware for personal use): http://www.mdgx.com/95.htm ], which is the same as the ietoy.htm linked above: * Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP3/5.01 SP4/5.5 SP2/6.0/6.0 SP1/6.0 SP2 for Windows 98/2000/ME/XP/2003 Cumulative BROWSEUI.DLL, INSENG.DLL, MSHTML.DLL, PNGFILT.DLL, SHDOCLC.DLL, SHDOCVW.DLL, SHLWAPI.DLL, URL.DLL, URLMON.DLL + WININET.DLL Security Vulnerabilities Fix (English): MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 98/98 SE/ME [3.48 MB]: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...2443cbd6125.exe MUST INSTALL: - BEFORE this Fix: Windows 98/NT4/2000/ME/XP HTML Help Update: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811630 - AFTER this Fix: Windows 98/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 MSXML 2.5, 2.6, 3.0 + 4.0 Fixes: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=832414 BUGS: - MSKB: MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 98/98 SE/ME Registry Fix: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=867282 1. All links to *.EXE + *.MSI patches are in BLUE. BTW: 9x means all Windows builds from 95 1st retail all the way up to 98 SE. Where 98 SE is not specified, and says only 98, it means all Windows 98 builds including 98 SE. More details here: http://www.mdgx.com/win.htm and here: http://www.mdgx.com/ver.htm For more term explanations + abbreviations, please see my glossary page: http://www.mdgx.com/glossary.htm All this may seem complicated at 1st glance, but remember that MS made it this way, and I [and all others who do this] have a hard time finding all these links, especially since MS started to post security patches every month. I'm also trying to make all this "patching" process as simple as it can be, but because each file must have a web page with explanations, FAQ, bugs, fixes, etc, some patches require other patches pre-installed, and some newer patches override older ones, it's never easy. It would be nice if MS would have provided service packs for IE, OE, WMP, DirectX, etc, but because they haven't and they never will, there will always be people like me who take time to sort them out for people like you. Enjoy. Hope this helps.
  10. Hi superscotty19, and welcome to this MSFN forum. To answer your questions about 98SE2ME [which I develop + maintain]: 1. It is completely free solely for educational purposes, with only 1 condition: you must post any corrections/improvements you may come up with in this forum, so we can all can benefit from them. 2. It is very stable. Let's just say I use these > 600 WinME system files for > 4 years on my PC without problems. B) And besides, you have the option to allow full backup creation of your Win98SE OS before installing any WinME files, and you can restore from there anytime. On top of that, every option [except 1 + 2 which make full OS backup] backs up the file(s) it replaces. 3. Of course, same as XP, 2000, 2003 etc, all Win9x/ME OSes are copyrighted to MS which means that u must have the OS to which 98SE2ME applies already installed on your local HD from a legally obtained Setup CD [English only], and in order to install options 1, 2 + 3 you must also have a legal copy of WinME Setup CD [English only]. Of course you can copy/burn/borrow/whatever stuff on your computer from whatever sources, but piracy is NOT condoned by me nor by this forum. Therefore same applies to [examples] and all similar upgrades/packs/SPs: 98SE SP 2.0 RC2, 98SE/ME Revolutions Pack, AutoPatcher XP, AutoPatcher 2000, XP Security Pack, Windows XP Post-SP2 Update Pack, XP Longhorn Transformation Pack, XPize Transformation Pack etc... That's 1 of the main reasons they are all unofficial. To learn everything about 98SE2ME, please see READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT To learn about Tihiy's Revolutions Pack + Gape's SP 2.0 RC2, you need to contact their authors, @ the respective forums. 11. I've never used a portable/laptop, but as far as I know most laptop LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens + video controllers do not support native/true/pure/real [a.k.a exclusive] MS-DOS mode, only a "simulated" DOS Virtual Machine (VM), in translation a DOS box/window within the Windows GUI (Graphical User Interface) that displays a "fake" windowed DOS command prompt box, never full screen, never "true" MS-DOS mode. The difference is that on "full-fledged" PCs connected to CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors [i've never used LCD screens] which support all DOS, MAC, VGA, EGA, XGA, SVGA etc modes combined with video controllers supporting a very wide range of video formats and resolutions, you'll always have "native" MS-DOS available. The only time u see what is the closest to a DOS screen is the boot POST (Power On Self Test) screen, and if u dual (triple, multi) boot 2 or more OSes, then u see the only other "DOS" screen on your LCD. On CRT connected PCs any Windows DOS box [if default PIF (Program Information File) settings not modified] can always be expanded to full screen or reduced back to a window [toggle Alt+Enter key "combo"]. But even on PCs "native" MS-DOS [as opposite to Windows DOS "box"] can be achieved only if u boot on purpose to MS-DOS "mode", without any Windows modules/kernel/core/drivers loaded in memory [no VMM32]. Please see these pages + files @ my site for more details on how this works and how to do it on your PC [not laptop/portable]: See MEMORY.TXT, REGIONS.TXT, EMM386.TXT, DOS9XMEM.TXT + WIN9XMEM.TXT [offline reading] = all part of W95-11D.EXE [freeware for personal use]: http://www.mdgx.com/95.htm DOS7 MEMory specs: http://www.mdgx.com/mem7.htm DOS7 CONFIG.SYS settings: http://www.mdgx.com/bench.htm#CON DOS7 AUTOEXEC.BAT settings: http://www.mdgx.com/bench.htm#AUT 95/98/ME SETUP + MEMORY MANAGERS: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip20.htm#9SMM COMPLETE MSDOS.SYS REFERENCE: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm 2 DOS OR NOT 2 DOS: http://www.mdgx.com/last3.htm#DOS2DOS MS-DOS PROMPT: http://www.mdgx.com/lastweek.htm#MSDOSPROMPT DOS NOW!: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#DOS If there is any way this can be done on laptops, please ask a "portable" expert. 12. I can only speak for 98SE2ME [as detailed in READ1ST.TXT under the "EXTREMELY IMPORTANT" chapter]:http://ftp.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT 98SE2ME does NOT interfere with Gape's Win98 SE Service Pack (SP) 2.0: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html Gape's SP 2.0 does NOT install ANY WinME system files. All these Win98 SE system files installed by Gape's SP 2.0 are REPLACED by 98SE2ME.BAT with IDENTICAL FILE, SAME BUILD, NEWER (if NOT specified below) and/or PATCHED versions [this may change in future releases]: VIP.386 [Win98 SE Q??????? 4.10.2227 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed VTCP.386 [identical file = Win98 SE Q236926 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed POWERCFG.CPL [WinME Setup CAB] SYSDM.CPL [WinME Setup CAB] TIMEDATE.CPL [WinME Setup CAB] COMDLG32.DLL [98SE2ME.BAT option 3 ONLY = WinME Setup CAB] GDI32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MPRSERV.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MSAFD.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MSJET35.DLL [same build = WinME Setup CAB] MSNP32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MSREPL35.DLL [same build = WinME Setup CAB] MSVCIRT.DLL [identical file = WinME Setup CAB] MSWSOSP.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] OLE32.DLL [same build = WinME Setup CAB] OLECNV32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] OLETHK32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] RPCRT4.DLL [identical file = Win98 SE Q269874 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed SHELL32.DLL [98SE2ME.BAT option 3 ONLY = WinME Setup CAB] SPOOLSS.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] USER32.DLL [WinME Q280800 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed WINMM.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] WLDAP32.DLL [identical file = WinME Setup CAB] DLLHOST.EXE [same build = WinME Setup CAB] EXPLORER.EXE [identical file = Win98 SE Dr. Hoiby 256 colors fix] EXPLORER.EXE [98SE2ME.BAT option 3 ONLY = WinME Setup CAB] EXTRAC32.EXE [WinXP SP2] = NOT replaced IF newest build already installed GDI.EXE [WinME Setup CAB] GRPCONV.EXE [same build = WinME Setup CAB] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed MSCONFIG.EXE [Tihiy fix = WinME Setup CAB] NOTEPAD.EXE [PFE = better Notepad replacement] REGSVR32.EXE [identical file = Win2000] TELNET.EXE [WinME Setup CAB] USER.EXE [WinME Q280800 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed NTMAPHLP.PDR [WinME Setup CAB] 1394BUS.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] HIDCLASS.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] LOGO.SYS [animated Blue Windows boot Logo] KMIXER.SYS [WinME Q280127 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed NTMAP.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] OHCI1394.SYS [WinME Q252185 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF this build already installed OPENHCI.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] PORTCLS.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] SBEMUL.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] SBP2PORT.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] UHCD.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] USBD.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] USBHUB.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] PPPMAC.VXD [WinME Setup CAB] Therefore I STRONGLY RECOMMEND to: 1. Install Gape's SP 2.0 BEFORE running 98SE2ME.BAT. 2. Allow 98SE2ME.BAT to BACKUP your ENTIRE ORIGINAL Win98 SE OS (if you haven't already) RIGHT AFTER selecting option 1 or option 2 to be able to RESTORE your original OS by running C:\9!M\98RESTOR.BAT in case you experience errors/lockups AFTER installing the WinME system files. To learn more about SP 2.0 RC2, please ask Gape. Hope this helps.
  13. I always accept constructive criticism... [insert smiley here]My IE 5/6 patches page [ http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm ] is for all Win32 OSes that MS still supports patching for, including 98, 98 SE, ME, NT4 [critical only] + 2000 SP3, 2000 SP4, XP and 2003. But each patch link specifies exactly which MS Win32 OS and IE or OE (Outlook Express) build + Service Pack (SP) they are meant for. Example: - MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 2003 [xx MB]: link_to_specific_file - MS IE 6.0 SP2 Patch for Windows XP SP2 [xx MB]: link_to_specific_file - MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 2000 SP3/2000 SP4/XP SP1 [xx MB]: link_to_specific_file - MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 98/98 SE/ME [xx MB]: link_to_specific_file - MS IE 5.5 SP2 Patch for Windows ME [xx MB]: link_to_specific_file - MS IE 5.01 SP4 Patch for Windows 2000 SP4 [xx MB]: link_to_specific_file If you'd like to learn more about Win9x/ME OSes releases/builds/versions, please see: http://www.mdgx.com/win.htm and: http://www.mdgx.com/ver.htm So all u need to do is click on the link "for Windows 98/98 SE/ME", which in this case means same file for all these 3 OSes. I assumed that u need to install all IE 6.0 SP1 available patches for Win98SE, because this entire forum is dedicated exclusively to 98SE. Conclusion: d/l all patches marked for "Windows etc/98/98 SE/etc" or "Windows 98 SE/ME" (most frequent examples). Last time I looked there were 10 such patches [but unfortunately that # will change next month]. Also, at the top of that page [under "IMPORTANT:"], it says that newest patches are at the top and oldest at the bottom, so they are all listed in reverse chronological order, which means u should install oldest 1st and move on up from there. But that's not actually necessary in most cases, because older MS patches will almost never install over older ones, because the advanced INF install code [built into advpack.dll] won't allow it, and even if u try to install older on top of newer, it will prompt u [yes / no dialog box] to keep the newer, which u should always do. And I've already done the work, so u won't find any duplicates [which would replace the same file with different builds], all are newest builds available. And of course, if using IE 6.0 SP1 on Win98SE, u only need to d/l the patches that apply to your particular OS + IE build. The way MS builds patch detection, u can't install wrong ones even if u want to. 79 MB vs 77.5 MB: this particular file is probably built using a different compression ratio than the other 1 u mention and/or using a different archiving format [well said randiroo76073], like ZIP, 7Z, RAR, CAB, ACE etc. If u use an archive extraction tool like PowerArchiver or WinZip (trial shareware) [more like these @ http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP = 99.9% free(ware)] to view archive contents, and eventually extract files, run setup.exe, see CAB contents etc, u can even tell what kind of compression algorithm those people used to build the 77.5 MB file. If you're not comfortable with d/l-ing from that particular site, u can always check out the best: Browser Archive: http://browsers.evolt.org/ These guys keep all builds ever released of every browser ever made [almost]. The only thing I can't do anything about is your connection speed. If u connect @ ~ 56k, your d/l time is probably in the astronomical range, and I pity you, because most IE patches are 1 - 3 MB. BTW: I'm no programmer either [don't even have any computing qualifications], I'm just a self-taught computer freak, like most everybody else here. If u just learned how to partition, u probably still have a long way to go, I've started "fooling around" with my 1st PC about 13 years ago... cr&*p, am I that old? If u plan on learning more about your PC, I recommend a decent place to start: http://www.mdgx.com/ oops... that's my site. I specialize [my main hobby is computing as I'm sure u already noticed] in DOS, 3.x, 95, 98/98SE, ME, 2000, XP tricks, guides, software, patches, upgrades etc [everything at my site is free for personal use, I hate shareware/adware/spyware and the likes], just browse around a bit, if u don't find anything u like, feel free to leave @ any time, there're plenty other sites I link to if u wish to learn something about computing. Enjoy the tour. Hope this helps.
  14. You looked @ the right page, but here is the link to d/l full MS IE 6.0 SP1 English [77.5 MB]:http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#6S1 or here: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX About an IE6SP1 service pack: very easy to do with a couple of INF and batch files as long as u have all Qxxxxxx files, but the tough part is that MS posts security updates almost every month [so far the only break they took was March 2005]. Other things to consider: 98, 98SE + ME OSes are not supported anymore, except for critical security patches, which are posted only @ windowsupdate.com, and that will last for only 1 more year. After that there will be NO more 98/ME patches, period. So it's a pain in the neck to hunt down the links [i know, I'm hunting down their patch links for over 6 years ]. If u have ever visited my IE patches page [ http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm ], you'll understand what I mean. Also, MS takes sometimes months until they post 98/ME patches @ windowsupdate.com, long after they have been initially released for all other supported OSes: 2000 SP3/2000 SP4, XP + 2003. Another annoyance: they do not test enough some of those patches and new security flaws are discovered every month, so they keep updating them over and over, to replace older/buggy ones. Of course, I'm also using IE 6.0 SP1 files from XP SP2 + 2003 SP1 RC2, which should be included in such a service pack, if any1 ever makes 1, but that's another story. On the other hand, if you decide to d/l all files [there are only 10 patches for IE 6.0 SP1 running on Win98 SE, and that includes MS OE 6.0 SP1] from my IE page and then install them, it will take u probably 10-15 min, depending on how fast your internet connection is. The catch is not to reboot after installing each 1, but after installing the last 1. Same goes for WMP9 [and the files u can use from XP SP2, WMP9 for XP + WMP10 on 98SE/ME]: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm Hope this helps.
  15. Gape: Sorry mate, but I had to disable the SP 2.0 RC2 mirror @ MDGx. My provider shut down my site for almost 5 hours last nite because the daily bandwidth [5 GB/day] went over the limit. According to the logs over 1100 people d/l-ed the file yesterday [3-22-2005]. You don't need to remove the link, it's still there, but now points to the MajorGeeks page: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4131.html
  16. Gape: Could you please send me the Q270063 ndis.vxd patch for 98SE when you have time? Thanks much in advance.
  17. Gape: I noticed you did not include newest HTML Help Update files from Win2003 SP1 RC2: HH.EXE HHCTRL.OCX HHCTRLUI.DLL HHSETUP.DLL ITIRCL.DLL ITSS.DLL into SP 2.0 RC2. Maybe in the next release? The entire HHU self-installing pack is here: http://ftp.mdgx.com/files/HHUPD.EXE Erpdude8 + I have both tried them on at least 5 PCs, and they work OK. These files are newer builds than MS security patches: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms05-001.mspx and: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms04-023.mspx Also noticed MajorGeeks posted SP 2.0 RC2 [just in case u didn't know ]: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4131.html You may want to add MG to the mirrors list.
  18. Gape: Could you please send me Q270063 also at your convenience? Thanks much in advance.
  19. I extracted the TT_ [expanded to TTF] fonts from Win2003 SP1 RC2, and found out they are all compatible with Win9x/ME:ARIAL.TTF ARIALBD.TTF ARIALBI.TTF ARIALI.TTF COUR.TTF COURBD.TTF COURBI.TTF COURI.TTF GEORGIA.TTF GEORGIAB.TTF GEORGIAI.TTF GEORGIAZ.TTF MICROSS.TTF TAHOMA.TTF TAHOMABD.TTF TIMES.TTF TIMESBD.TTF TIMESBI.TTF TIMESI.TTF VERDANA.TTF VERDANAB.TTF VERDANAI.TTF VERDANAZ.TTF These to my knowledge are the newest builds. The only 1 that doesn't work in 9x environment is L_10646.TTF because it's Unicode. I took these from XP SP2 [like u said, they all work]: COMIC.TTF KARTIKA.TTF LSANS.TTF LSANSD.TTF LSANSDI.TTF LSANSI.TTF TREBUC.TTF VRINDA.TTF I'll add these fonts to 98SE2XP [soon to be released B)]. Thanks for the heads up.
  20. If you ever installed 98SE2ME [ http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=37302 ], you may have noticed it installs 70 fonts from WinME Setup CABs into %windir%\FONTS, out of which 52 are TTF + 18 FON [raster]. To see the entire list, please go to this page:http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S Some of the fonts bundled with WinME are newer [updated builds] than the ones linked at zeuscat.com. Another site that offers same fonts: http://beebo.org/core-fonts/ Please notice that as far as I'm aware these fonts are intended only for Windows 3.1x/95/95a OSR1/95B OSR2.0-2.1/95C OSR2.5/NT4 without SP4 or newer. Windows 98/98 SE/ME + MS IE 5.5 SP2/6.0/6.0 SP1 all install newer or identical versions. The only files newer than WinME's [6-8-2000] are the 4 Trebuchet fonts [4-9-2001], all others are older. I've tried some WinXP fonts with 98SE [don't recall which, was a while back], unfortunately didn't work.
  21. Actually VCredist installs older versions of these DLLs. Newest ones I know of are included in VS6 SP6 = please see details + d/l links at this page:http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#VS6 Here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#RTF you'll find newest RICHED20.DLL, RICHED32.DLL + USP10.DLL (RTF controls) supported by Win98/ME. And here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE you'll find newest OLE Automation DLLs, including MSVCRT.DLL. As far as I'm aware newest ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4522, MSVCRT.DLL 6.10.9844.0, OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4522, OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4522, RICHED20.DLL 5.30.23.1215 + STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4522 supported by Win98/ME are included with Win2000 SP4: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downl...rvicepacks/sp4/
  22. No, if you already installed 98SE2ME you already have newest files.SP 2.0 RC2 should add a couple of new updates compared to RC1: Q192425 + Q246817 = 98SE2ME does not install those. 98SE2ME should NOT interfere with SP 2.0 [any edition]. Here are all files replaced by 98SE2ME that are installed by SP 2.0 [excerpt fom READ1ST.TXT]: All these Win98 SE system files installed by Gape's SP 2.0 are REPLACED by 98SE2ME.BAT with IDENTICAL, SAME, NEWER (if NOT specified below) and/or PATCHED versions [this may change in future releases]: VIP.386 [Win98 SE Q??????? 4.10.2227 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF newest build VTCP.386 [identical file = Win98 SE Q236926 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF newest build POWERCFG.CPL [WinME Setup CAB] SYSDM.CPL [WinME Setup CAB] TIMEDATE.CPL [WinME Setup CAB] COMDLG32.DLL [98SE2ME.BAT option 3 ONLY = WinME Setup CAB] GDI32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MPRSERV.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MSAFD.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MSJET35.DLL [same build = WinME Setup CAB] MSNP32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] MSREPL35.DLL [same build = WinME Setup CAB] MSVCIRT.DLL [identical file = WinME Setup CAB] MSWSOSP.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] OLE32.DLL [same build = WinME Setup CAB] OLECNV32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] OLETHK32.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] RPCRT4.DLL [identical file = Win98 SE Q269874 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF newest build SHELL32.DLL [98SE2ME.BAT option 3 ONLY = WinME Setup CAB] SPOOLSS.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] USER32.DLL [WinME Q280800 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF newest build WINMM.DLL [WinME Setup CAB] WLDAP32.DLL [identical file = WinME Setup CAB] DLLHOST.EXE [same build = WinME Setup CAB] EXPLORER.EXE [identical file = Win98 SE Dr. Hoiby 256 colors fix] = NOT replaced IF newest build EXPLORER.EXE [98SE2ME.BAT option 3 ONLY = WinME Setup CAB] EXTRAC32.EXE [WinXP SP2] = NOT replaced IF newest build GDI.EXE [WinME Setup CAB] GRPCONV.EXE [same build = WinME Setup CAB] = NOT replaced IF newest build MSCONFIG.EXE [Tihiy fix = WinME Setup CAB] NOTEPAD.EXE [PFE = better Notepad replacement] REGSVR32.EXE [identical file = Win2000] TELNET.EXE [WinME Setup CAB] USER.EXE [WinME Q280800 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF newest build NTMAPHLP.PDR [WinME Setup CAB] 1394BUS.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] HIDCLASS.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] LOGO.SYS [animated Blue Windows boot Logo] KMIXER.SYS [WinME Q280127 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF newest build NTMAP.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] OHCI1394.SYS [WinME Q252185 hotfix] = NOT replaced IF newest build OPENHCI.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] PORTCLS.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] SBEMUL.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] SBP2PORT.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] UHCD.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] USBD.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] USBHUB.SYS [WinME Setup CAB] PPPMAC.VXD [WinME Setup CAB] Therefore I STRONGLY RECOMMEND to: 1. Install Gape's SP 2.0 BEFORE 98SE2ME.BAT.
  23. This is Gape's SP 2.0 forum."98SE2ME: Install Killer Replacements unattended" forum is here. To answer your questions: 98SE2ME does NOT interfere in ANY way with SP 2.0 RC1 [more details @ MSFN forum linked above]. The only files installed by both are these 4: - fixed EXPLORER.EXE from: http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/ - newer REGSVR32.EXE from Win2000 - fixed VTCP.386 from MSKB Q236926 + - fixed RPCRT4.DLL from MSKB Q269874. VTCP.386 + RPCRT4.DLL can also be installed separately if u d/l respective MS hotfixes posted here: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE and here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm SP 2.0 RC1 + 98SE2ME do NOT require reinstalling Win98SE. Hope this helps.
