I was able to delete all of the Windows tours files, except for tour.exe. It was protected by the Windows File protection service and each time it was deleted, XP just replaced it. Here is what I did to get rid of it. It is a registry hack...so be sure to back up if you are unsure of registry editing... Manual FIX "To disable WFP, start Regedit or Regedt32 and go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogonAdd/modify the "SFCDisable" DWORD [REG_DWORD] Binary entry to read FFFFFF9D.Reboot when done.To (re)enable WFP modify "SFCDisable" to read 0. You must re-boot for the change to take effect. You then can delete tour.exe despite the warning that XP will give you. I then went and changed the reg key back to "0".

I was talking US currency, I bought at multiwave. The price is slightly better at newegg.com. h**p://direct.mwave.com/mwave/Index.hmx?UID=&CID=&Back=%url-%20encode Sorry, I have no experience with Asus or Intel products. I like the AMD's and this is my third one. The Athlon XP (Palomino) runs cooler than the Thunderbirds. I would definitely get an AMD rated PSU. You can check AMD website for approved power supply units. The ECS board got very good reviews at tomshardware.com and other tech sites. There are links from the forum on my previous post. alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt is also a good source of information and help.

Barnettrp: I would re-build before I ever went back to Win 98. I was running XP flawlessly on AMDk6-2 400 and Soyo 5EMA+ with a VIA 133 chipset..... I just re-built this one and re-installed XP, no problems it runs flawlessly. I have used all of the M$ drivers except during a problem that I created( messing with TweakUI), I installed Creatives latest SB drivers w/ no ill effects. ECS K7S5A w/ SIS735chipset (inexpensive and has built-in LAN) Enlight 7237 case AMD Athlon XP 1500+ (Running at 133/133 w/ no probs) 256 mb DDR SB Live (disabled on board sound) Diamond Graphics Card-AGP(basic) IBM 10 gig HDD Yamaha CRW 8824E CD-RW Generic CD-Rom 45x Zip 100 IDE Teac FDD ECS board was used due to reading about so many problems with VIA chipsets (266). The SIS chipset was a viable alternative. Also this board was very well priced.... ~$60. I wouldn't recommend overclocking this setup. You can read lots about ECS board here (keep in mind, overclockers forum) h**p://forum.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=001477

You can delete the contents of the dll cache folder (hidden)... It is huge... XP automatically puts stuff back in it whenever you do updates.. Do not delete the folder, only the contents of the folder, If you do not use System hibernation, you can remove hiberfil.sys (hidden file) by doing the following: Turn off hibernation(removes hiberfil.sys) Control Panel-Screen Saver Power-Hibernate Tab-uncheck hibernation box-reboot and hiberfil.sys is no more. You can delete most of Windows Tour...its in Windows/help/Tours I managed to successfully delete all except for tour.exe in the mmtour folder...XP complained about it..it's protected by the System File Protection component of XP. You can delete the contents of Re-install backups Folder in System 32 Folder and the associated registry entries if you are sure that you will not need to revert back.. The registry entries take the stuff out of add/remove..... I backup the folders by compressing and backup the registry entries just in case and store them off my HDD... If you have messed with Bootvis and don't have it anymore, look in Windowssystem32logfiles in there possibly in a subfolder called WMI there is a 40mb logfile associated with Bootvis that didn't get removed when you deleted bootvis.... you can delete that logfile... Sorry, i am not sure what the file's name was, it was awhile back and on another system config.... That's all I can think of for now.......

Thanks all for responding. I went to Creative website and downloaded the latest Creative Software package. Since I did not want their softeware on my computer, I extracted just the drivers with WinRAR. I installed the latest drivers and it did not fix the problem. I tried LS_dragons' fix, that's a good one, but it did not work... Then, I did some all out searching and in another forum I found the fix.... I almost don't believe it. Apparently, I was messing with Tweak UI recently. Under the General Tab, the box "Beep on Errors" must be CHECKED!!!! I checked the box and it works now.... boy was this whole episode frustrating!

xperties: I do not have Creative's software package installed. I disliked it and it took up too much space. I just am using teir .wav file as my startup sound. At least, I am trying to.... My drivers are current from Windows XP Update. It was a recommended update. MS Driver 5.1.2602.0 dated 11/1/2001 emu10k Creative SB Live! (WDM) and emu10k1 according to system info.... It is just a very minor annoyance, otherwise I have it all working fine.

Running Windows XP Pro, newly installed as I re-built this computer last week. In "Sounds" I have it set to play a .wav file (SB Live, ctmelody.wav) on start up. No matter how many times I set it, it does not work... It used to work with my old setup when the welcome screen came up. Does this have anything to do with the faster processor (AMD Athlon XP 1500+, versus k6-2 400) Only other differences are RAM, now 256DDR, versus 256 PC100 SDRAM, and mobo's, now ECS K7S5A versus Soyo 5EMA+....

I found the answers that I was looking for. You guys are the best!!!!

Thanks guys. I see it now under the manual update. I am running AMD K6-2. Will the K7 driver work and will it improve performance/speed? Also if so how do I install? Do I simply replace amdk6.sys with amdk7.sys in c:windowssystem32drivers???? What do those other files in the .cab file do? where do they go??? Thanks

It takes me one minute aproximately here. I have an older homebuilt system and it boots faster and runs way faster than Win 98 original, tweaked to the max ever did. AMD K6-2, 400 256mb pc 100 RAM IBM 10gig HDD Soundblaster Live Diamond 8mb AGP video Iomega 100 IDE Zip Yamaha CRW8424 IDE CD-RW Teac FDD Generic CD-Rom Programs loaded at start up: XP Pro, of course AVP/KAV ZA Pro 2.6.357 GetRight4.5 Cable Modem Internet access (NIC-3 Com) Several XP Services disabled and inessential ones set to manual. I am happy with the boot and shutdown times, considering the speed of the processor and stability has been amazing. I have applied speed tweaks to the Internet connection and lots of other tweaks discussed here and elsewhere. I am thrilled with this OS and now that Roxio has gotten their act together my XPerience is complete!!!!!!!

I don't see any Processor driver updates. I thought I saw that mentioned as part of the complete SP1, somewhere....

If for some reason you need to install NetBEUI then follow these instructions. **Note - You will need the WinXP CD in order to to this! Support for the NetBIOS Extended User Interface protocols (also called NetBEUI or NBF) in Windows XP has been discontinued. If your configuration requires temporary use of NetBEUI for Windows XP, follow these steps: To install the NETBEUI protocol: - Locate the Valueaddmsft et etbeui directory on your Windows XP CD.Copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%SYSTEM32DRIVERS directory. - Copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%INF directory. - In Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections and then click Network Connections. - Right-click the connection you want to configure, and then click Properties. - On the General tab, click the INSTALL button to add the NetBEUI protocol

Thanks. I used to use Take Two under Windows 98 and it was very good and easy to use. Due to the recent problems(Direct CD) and now, no more Take Two, I have switched to Ghost 2002 (7.0) and it has worked okay....but I have not had to restore XP....yet..... So we will see, once that happens... I did verify the integrity of my Ghost backups and those did come out okay.....
-
Does it work? Specifically, does Direct CD work?
-
I just installed the Update to Win XP. They are listed in Add/Remove as SP1/HotFix. The uninstall folders are in the Windows Directory. All installed fine.....

I came across this one for BROADBAND: this ones simple: this is for broad band connections. I did'nt try it on dial up but might work for dial up. 1.make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator priviliges. 2. start - run - type gpedit.msc 3. expand the "local computer policy" branch 4. expand the "administrative templates" branch 5. expand the "network branch" 6. Hilight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window 7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting 8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item 9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0 reboot if you want to but not necessary on some systems your all done. Effect is immediate on some systems. some need re-boot. I have one machine that needs to reboot first, the others didn't. Don't know why this is. This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self. Even with QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth. -

Here is my list. I am sorry for the duplicates...lazy at the moment Speed up the Start Menu HKEY_CURRENT_USER Control Panel Desktop MenuShowDelay By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 1, to speed it up ------------------------------------------------ Use the ultimate configuration tool Start and then Run, then type the following: gpedit.msc -------------------------------------------------------------- Remove the Shared Documents folders from My Computer Simply fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer My Computer NameSpace DelegateFolders You'll see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If you delete this, all of the Shared Documents folders (which are normally under the group called "Other Files Stored on This Computer") will be gone. You do not need to reboot your system to see the change ------------------------------------------------------------- WinXP Clear Page file on shutdown Go to Control panel Administartative tools, local security policy. then goto local policies ---> security options. Then change the option for "Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile" -------------------------------------------------------------- Unhiding Add/Remove Items This is VERY usefull in taking out those annoying programs that the install didn't allow you to select NOT to install. Messenger and MSN Explorer for example. In your c:windowsinf is a file called sysoc.inf edit this file with Notepad. If you can't find that file... I suggest you show all files. You should see lines that look something like this: msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 Isn't it interesting how that word hide is in there? Yep you guessed it. Hit CTRL + H to Replace. In the "Find what" box type hide and then hit the "Replace All" button. Save, exit and go check your add/remove programs. Nice huh? A very clean way to un-install crap you don't need. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Turn off hibernation(removes hiberfil.sys) Control Panel-Screen Saver Power-Hibernate Tab-uncheck hibernation box-reboot and hiberfil.sys is no more. ------------------------------------------------------------ Turn off Error Reporting Automatic updates etc. Control Panel-System or Right click on My computer icon and choose properties.... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have a piece of software that refuses to install because it says that you are not running Windows 2000 (such as the Win2K drivers for a Mustek scanner!!) you can simply edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/ProductName to say Microsoft Windows 2000 instead of XP and it will install. You may also have to edit the version number or build number, depending on how hard the program tries to verify that you are installing on the correct OS. I had to do this for my Mustek 600 CP scanner (compatibility mode didn't help!!!) and it worked great, so I now have my scanner working with XP (and a tech at Mustek can now eat his words). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how : Open up the Registry and go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace Under that branch, select the key : {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} and delete it. This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary. This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -
I am using O & O Defrag 2000 Pro on XP with NTFS file system. It works fine. I used to love using Vopt for Win 98 and tried VoptNT on XP. Vopt NT did not function as expected. The new XP version will work as it is supposed to, I guess. I am sticking with O&O Defrag as it is fast and reliable. The freeware version was just fine too....

Sick of that "Send Error report to M$" box?? READ
jrichard326 replied to FthrJACK's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
------------------------------------------------------------ Turn off Error Reporting/ Automatic updates etc. Control Panel-System or Right click on My computer icon and choose properties....Then just uncheck what you don't want... -
Why not just change the file association??????

You can turn the service off (disable) if you want to, I guess. I prefer to have it set to manual. Alternatively, to disable the built-in Windows CD Recording feature: Go to Control Panel- right click on the CD-RW drive choose -Properties-Click on the Recording Tab- Uncheck Enable CD Recording.
