How to make installer like ones that Microsoft updates Win9x with
coolman replied to coolman's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Wow thanks! -
I was wondering how you made those installers where Microsoft installs an update for Win9x because unofficial updates sometimes have them too. They have certain setup switches. For example, /Q:A/R:N and /T:%WINDIR% and /C:"setup.exe". They also have .INF files injected into them to install from that. Here is an example of the ones I'm talking about: Anyone have an idea?

KernelEx -- On building, debugging and related matters...
coolman replied to Drugwash's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
It seems somewhat of a headache to compile. For starters, if you don't have or use the tools thats needed, then one must learn them all. This can be time consuming. I guess we will have to wait for someone to compile it. I can compile it successfully and test it (otherwise I wouldn't even improve KernelEx lol). As COMPILE.TXT says, you will need Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 SP6 to compile. I have been trying to compile the NSIS Installer (Kernelex.nsi) for a while now, but it keeps throwing up errors that it can't find files in the destination dir. These are the sections in the .NSI that caused the error: (If I remove one of the lines that caused the error message, it will just move to the next file and bring up the same error message as well. Just removing those lines in the file would make no sense, because the files described in there are critical to the main functionality of KernelEx (I think)) This is the error message I get with or without removing the lines. File: "output-i386\Debug\KernelEx.dll" -> no files found. Usage: File [/nonfatal] [/a] ([/r] [/x filespec [...]] filespec [...] | /oname=outfile one_file_only) Error in script "C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\KernelEx-master\KernelEx.nsi" on line 244 -- aborting creation process From what I can tell, It seems to create the installation directory (output-i386 or as NSIS would call it '$INSTDIR'), but it can't find any data in that directory, and that's a problem. I also tried to compile some of the C++ .dsw files with VC++ 6.0, but it keeps telling me it can't execute (or find) rc.exe, cl.exe, etc. -
There are many abandonware sites that have it. The 45 day trial on Microsoft.com is VPC 5.2, which isn't supported on Win98/ME. Just do a Google search like this: Virtual PC 5.1 Download If you do find it, you'll need a serial number. There isn't anything free that I know of that is easy to work with. Dosbox you really have to work with for a while. Qemu/Bochs aren't very user friendly and are hard to use.

xp.reg won't work. You could edit the MSI with Orca and go to the LaunchCondition Section and remove the line that says something similar to NotVersionNT4orWin9x in it then save it. That is similar to changing the compatibility mode in KernelEx. Doing so will ignore the Windows 2000 error but I have tried installing VBox 1.5.0 that way as well because I was curious and it doesn't work because it says a fatal error has occurred during installation. So please don't try it because Win9x doesn't have the necessary resources, even with KernelEx. It would require a major modification to a core component of the operating system(s) and even if this was fixed, programs that were designed specifically to run on Win98/ME probably wouldn't continue to run as they should. If you really want to work with Virtual Machines with Windows 98/ME as host, go with Connectix Virtual PC 5.1, which is the last version supported on Win98/ME. It can run up to Windows XP and a few other OSes that aren't Windows and doesn't require KernelEx. You could probably find it on Vetusware or Google.

There will always be people like Hu$tle. All people have fans and haters. You should just ignore the haters, and focus on the people that are showing respect towards your work. I honestly think you have done great with KernelEx all these years and many of us are very happy with your work. I just have to say, thank you for everything.

"KernelEx-4.5.2.exe" /S Thank you, DosProbie!! -
That looks great, Ley0k! Would someone care to compile his repository, for some of us newbies?

Glad I could be of assistance.

KernelEx 4.5.2 Silent/Unattended Install?

No one? -
Possibly the Windows 7 computer is trying to create some sort of network group (maybe a homegroup) with the 98SE laptop which 98SE doesn't recognize. Try disconnecting the Windows 7 laptop from the network/internet and see if that does something. If not do this: On the 98SE laptop, make sure the internet settings are correct. Go to Start>Run and type the following (without quotes) "control netcpl.cpl" and press ENTER and make sure TCP/IP, your network adapter, and Client for Microsoft Networks is listed in the networking components that are installed box. If that is correct check if your Primary Network Logon (below the installed network components box) is Client for Microsoft Networks. If you need to add some components for your network adapter, network protocols, Logon Hosts, etc., click the 'Add' button and follow from there. Then click OK to close on the Network window (DON'T PRESS CANCEL). If prompted for your 98SE CD, insert it. It will install the components needed for your network. If prompted to restart, click Yes. If it still doesn't work, go to Start>Run again and type the following (without quotes) "control inetcpl.cpl" and press ENTER. Check if your homepage is valid on the General Tab. If correct, go to the Advanced Tab and scroll to the bottom and check if the boxes for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, and TLS 1.0 are checked. Then press OK (DON'T PRESS CANCEL). You don't need to restart for this. Then try launching Internet Explorer. Post back with the results.

What program is that? If it's ObjectDesktop which I'm assuming it is, what is the skin for it for the transparency? (If you remember)

Does anyone have any idea for what the silent install switch for KernelEx 4.5.2's installer may be? I have heard with NSIS you use the /s switch for a silent install. I tried the /S switch but it didn't do a thing. In addition, is there a no restart switch for the installer as well? Thank you

On-Screen Keyboard from Windows ME or 2000 in 98SE?
coolman replied to coolman's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I found a stable way to make this work! Install 98SE2ME and choose Option 3 (WinME Explorer+Shell+UI) DOWNLOAD 98SE2ME: Download Try this mirror ONLY if the above doesn't work: Mirror Download Then go to Start>Run and type appwiz.cpl Go to the Windows Setup tab, click Accessibility, then click Details. Check both Accessibility Options and Accessibility Tools then click OK and then OK once more. If you are prompted for your Windows 98 SE CD insert it. Continue with that and if it says that a file being copied is older than the one already on your system, click Yes. Then download this ZIP file: NEW VERSION RELEASED! AGAIN! osksetup.zip If you don't have a program to decompress ZIP files download and install this: 7-Zip 9.20 Unzip the files to a folder of your choice and run INSTALL.BAT. Then click on Start>Programs>Accessories>Accessibility>On-Screen Keyboard. You should have a successful installation of the Windows ME OSK. Note: If there is a down arrow in the Accessibility folder, click on it. Then it will show the OSK shortcut. The reason why it does that is because WinME/Win2000/WinXP shell sometimes hides unused shortcuts in the Start Menu under a down arrow. After you run the program from that location in the Start Menu once then it will show the shortcut normally and not hidden so you won't have to click the arrow again. *NO RESTART REQUIRED!* -
Install video driver with Rundll32 from command line
coolman replied to coolman's topic in Application Installs
and mentions both VBEMP and SciTech drivers.edit - Forgot to mention the INF and other two files are REQUIRED to be in the SAME FOLDER dung Install. HTH Yes this is a Virtualbox VM. I am making a Virtualbox Guest Additions installer that uses batch to install everything. I want to make the video driver installation automatic so the user doesn't have to go into the display settings to change anything. I tried your trick but it still says 16 colors and 640x480. In Advanced, it just has the General tab and not the monitor, adapter, etc. tabs. -
Install video driver with Rundll32 from command line
coolman replied to coolman's topic in Application Installs
Didn't work. -
I don't know if this is the correct forum or not. Anyway, I am trying to install a video driver using Rundll32.exe in a command line, but every time I have executed my code and restarted and then went back into the Display Settings in Control Panel, I couldn't change any settings, so it looks like it didn't make a change even though it processed everything and copied its files. Is there something I'm missing? Here is my code: start /wait C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection Driver.Install 132 C:\WINDOWS\INF\VBEMP.INF Here is the INF file: ; INF file for VBEMP display driver ; Copyright 1988-2008, Anapa Corp. I think the one that MS included with their OS is better than those other portable ones you see out there. -

Help I installed 98SE2ME with Option 6 and when I try to run any of the games from the Start Menu>Programs>Accessories>Games>GameZone, I get a message saying C:\PROGRAM was not found. And there isn't even a directory in C:\Program Files called GameZone! -
On-Screen Keyboard from Windows ME or 2000 in 98SE?
coolman replied to coolman's topic in Windows 9x/ME
is not very "logical" . I mean, is the question: Or is it: If the second, then: http://cnt.lakefolks.com/ http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1327 might do. Or am I missing something? jaclaz Well I got it working now. It was the first. Sorry for not being clear enough, I was tired when I wrote that comment. -
If you have Win98/SE or WinME, Outlook Express 6 SP1. It's the latest version. Comes with IE6 SP1. But if you have Win95, IE 5.5 SP2 with Outlook Express 5. Both can handle IMAP.

On-Screen Keyboard from Windows ME or 2000 in 98SE?
coolman replied to coolman's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I have actually got it working by copying the explorer.exe and shell32.dll files and placing them in their appropriate location and placing MSSWCH.DLL and MSSWCHx.exe and OSK.exe in SYSTEM then running OSK, but I do NOT recommend doing this. It can totally mess up your system. ALWAYS have a backup of your original explorer.exe and shell32.dll files and get ready to copy them back in MS-DOS mode if you decide to try it. You don't need KernelEx for this trick. Here is a picture: Just to let you know I am not familiar with the 32-bit API so I have no way of modifying Win98's explorer to work with this.
