  1. pfffffffffffffffffff you guys are the technical dudes before you guys answer did anyone ask me if its a DSL? above statement was referring to the name of the modem/router and number of portsi gave the the modem info if someone really wanted to know they could have checked it out - later in the posts i even posted a link. I mean if i am confused you probably can tell why. I ask for help then i get told why didnt i say this and that when easily if it was important someone could have asked in earlier posts or checked it up themselves if they really wanted to help
  2. really??? well try and read my first post and maybe youll realise - this is what i said: OK people heres the scenario: 3 PCs using 1 D-Link modem/ router (D-Link 504T) with 4 ports obviously all 3 PCs are connected to the modem/ router for internet connection
  3. maybe it is however with everyones advice i need to pick whats right - look at it from my point but thanks for your help
  4. ok so i dont really need to configure the server or anything especially for the internet connection? what about the modem>?
  5. Ok so i get a Hub - would this mean i can connect more than 3 PCs to the internet (depending how many ports the hub has?) and what about the modem/ router? could i still use this? Heres the spec for my current modem router: http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=jN7uAYLx/oIJaWV...N3k2qrnK04Uue0= well i would do that but again im not sure how to set this up - unless you know some link i can read up on I reserved the 4th port for another PC that i may buy later on According to the manufacturer link i would say yes its DHCP At the moment all pc are configured to have DHCP set to automatic Thanks all
  6. im not too sure how to configure it........ what would be the benefit?
  7. My Setup thats how my setup is. 3 Pcs connected to 1 D-Link which in turn is then connected to my phone line. The red line indicates that i have to SWAP the RJ45 with that PC in order to transfer files. no ive been told there are splitters that you can insert 2 RJ45 cables into 1 end and the other end inserts in your PC thank you all
  8. 3 PCs connected to 1 modem/ router (this is a modem AND router). I have a seperate server which currently everytime i want to swap files i have to remove 1 RJ45 cable and insert the other cable. My ISP assigns dynamic IP addresses (if thats any help)
  9. Well i have 3 PCs all connected to my router/ modem using RJ45 cables. Out of the 3 pcs i want have one PC where i can transfer files from and to with my server. Currently i can share files with each PC (except for the server). I can transfer files from and to my server only if i change the RJ45 cables around (i.e. take out my internet cable and replace it with my server RJ45 cable) so i want to know if its possible to do this with a RJ45 splitter without and performance or internet speed loss. Or is there another way you would recommend?
  10. OK people heres the scenario: 3 PCs using 1 D-Link modem/ router (D-Link 504T) with 4 ports obviously all 3 PCs are connected to the modem/ router for internet connection I have a server running Win 2003. Could i use a RJ45 splitter to connect the server with 1 PC aswell as the internet at the same time - in effect i am using my internet connection and sharing files or transfering files from my Server to my pc when required Woudl there be any performance problems using a splitter? If this is not a recommeded way coudl someone advise what may be.

Hello Brian873, Just for testing purposes i want to allow a set group to lets say allow to- 1- Burn CDs using Nero (i know they (Nero) have their own little program however i prefer to create my own group) 2- Not allow them to run messenger. 3- Allow certain file extensions to be run. In general i want to get the idea of creating a group. Thanks for your help
  16. Ok thats good aresgodofwar. Im in local security policy inside administrative tools and still dont understand what to do so further help would be excellent. Yes ive tried the help function in XP, personally i think its a maze as its taking me round and round - you understand it as you know what your doing.

  18. People, How can i create a group such as an administrator or power user or even a limited account user? my aim is to create my own group so i can pick what goes on and who can do what and who cant cheers
  19. Firstly you dont need to apologise, the point i was trying to make was there is a cheaper way of starting a server for a newbie than 3000 pounds - thats all. I was only taking the mickey as in if your going to spend 3000 pounds for a starter server then a professional server in your eyes would be a lot lot more. Personally myself would visit these links for cheap hardware - this is for UK though and you may have to pay additinal costs if outside. www.eclipse-computers.com www.ebuyer.com http://www.nickknows.com/ - These guys have some real cheap stuff AT TIMES but are worth looking out for. and....i see you have a gold star - well done
  20. errrrrr all i was doing was offering you a PC at your standards so in effect its not a load of crap. Its a load of sense - according to you it should have been anyway. Anyway heres something thats a load of crap Your almost there with you little gold star hail hail
  21. Well brian873 comparing to a 3000 thousand pound "starting" server this is the best deal for you: 17000 pounds how about that? and on top of that youll get a gold star from this site when you hit 50 - excellent deal i guess only for a person with your limits.
  22. I think jpatto just needs some assistance on servers. Although Dell are good i personally dont like them or their staff anymore, but if you can handle siht service go for it. I noticed the title- thats why i read this post. So you dont need to spend 3000 pounds to get you started (Brian873 - if thats how much you need to get started on a server well come to me please when you need a professional server and ill definately give you a "bargain" price ) Go for a cheap one or a decent one once you know what your doing expand on it. Were hear to help so post any questions you have.
  23. I dont think it is possible to copy them files because they are for the original system and different product keys and codes - i think
  24. After reading this forum about the usbehci.sys corrupted error message i took on the challenge to call Dell and tell them i would either like them to replace my CD with one the has SP2 or give me a resolution that i can slipstream my CD that i paid for thinking there are no problems. I sent them 6 emails - there promise was to reply within 24 hours - guess what i never got a reply. I went to the US website who had a 6 hour response. I received a reply which was my same mail i sent them. 1 week later i still have not received a reply. I finally decided to call these idiots and straight away they tell me - this can not be done. I asked "why not" they tell me as long as i can install my operating system then there is no problem. The options given were to either buy a CD AGAIN or just install over again which will take me 2 days as the CD i have is very old. I explained and said that if i knew you had given me a CD that would not slipstream and was made clear about this i could have left buying from Dell and buy from someone/ place who are more reliable - they went on and on about the same options they gave me as if they are a tape recorder. I asked for a resoltion or them to tell me what files i should modify and how to resolve this - no, they wouldnt tell me either. Myself personally am not going to buy anything from Dell, it will be from IBM or i will build a machine myself. So just to know how many fans we have out there supporting Dell, A - Is Dells's customer service crap? B - Would you buy from Dell knowing this has happened?
