Windows XP install issues... Stuck on "Installing Devices"
Win98 replied to Win98's topic in Windows XP
I changed around jumpers, and eventually got both my PATA HDD and DVD drive to show up, an 98se setup started fine, and now it sticks on "Windows 98 is now setting up your hardware and any plug and play devices you may have"....Damnit, I dont have anything plugged into the motherboard. What the hell is wrong with it.. EDIT: Finally, It got past that point... Took about 30 minutes total. When i was installing XP, it sat overnight and didnt change, so thats why I had little faith in this. Thanks! -
Windows XP install issues... Stuck on "Installing Devices"
Win98 replied to Win98's topic in Windows XP
Those specs seem to comply with this board, but its definitely out of a desktop. Ill check all of the jumpers and what not and see what i can do. Also, I know what a chipset is. I'm not stupid (If you haven't figured that out). I'm just going off of what I have Successfully done. I have taken Windows 98 hard drives and put them in other computers that were not an intel chipset, and it booted. Thanks. -
Windows XP install issues... Stuck on "Installing Devices"
Win98 replied to Win98's topic in Windows XP
Ive swapped HDD's from computer to computer many times with little issue. All i was doing with the 98 HDD the first time was seeing if the board would recognize a hard drive, before i did anything else with it. As for the channels, it says First Channel Device 0 [My hard drive] First Channel Device 1 [None] Second Channel Device 0 [None] Second Channel Device 1 [None] Third Channel Device 0 [HP CDDVD] Fourth Channel Device 0 [None] There is no option to set it to "Auto". It seems it already figures out what is there on its own. Cables are good. I already specified that. I dont know what jumpers to check, nor do I know why they would be moved. Pata DVD drive works fine, and it boots from DVD... -
Windows XP install issues... Stuck on "Installing Devices"
Win98 replied to Win98's topic in Windows XP
That the same board. When It was stuck on the cloud screen, that was already installed from a different computer. Cables are fone, as I have been using them for years.. I don't know what in the bios would keep it from installing. What do you mean by a "botched IDE" bus? Thanks!! -
Hey, A week or two ago, I picked up an Asus A8-LE motherboard (From a scrap yard, actually) I tried installing 98se, and it couldnt find my HDD, When trying 2k, it would start the install, but get stuck at about 55% on "Installing Devices", and does the same exact thing with XP.. I dont have any hardware plugged in, so it shouldnt be conflicting with anything. Are there any settings in the BIOS I need to change? Or what? Thanks! Motherboard Specs: Asus A8-LE (Came out of a Compaq desktop) AMD Athlon 64 (Also have a semphron I can drop in place if needed) 1gb ram (Can change this as well) 185gb Hitachi DeskStar, IDE. Also, It wont recognize my IDE DVD drive, but it will recognize the sata one out of my newer computer..

Ill look when i get back sunday. Thanks!
-
I looked for that the other day, but I can even find the file on the computer. (Yes i selected logged in the boot menu) Im going to be away from the computer until sunday, so I will have to try these things sunday night. Thanks!

No no no..... I mean to charge the dead 3v with. Havent got to the motherboard to try this yet, as I have been messing with the computer I got off of the curb today. Specs: Socket 370 Celeron (Which is faster, Celeron, or P3? I have quite a few on hand) 512mb pc133 ram Didnt have a hard drive, but now has the Windows 98 HDD out of my first computer. Its a whole 6gb. Thing works great. Im trying to install my PCI wireless card on it, and im picking through dll and system files, because they apparently arent on the disk.. Right now im trying to find ndishlp.sys, and I have failed.. If anyone has this file and wants to give me it, i would love it. Thanks!

Thanks. When I get home this afternoon I'll try it. A 9v battery works better than AAA's... Haha.
-
Im pretty sure the battery is dead. How would i go about reseting all of that?
-
I'll look into that. Thanks. Hopefully, this motherboard is old enough that it wont have too many issues installing.. The thing is, Now... The motherboard is retarded, and whenever you disconnect power to it, the next time you plug it in you have to do something (I honestly have no idea what, but ive done it twice now) to get it to come on, before the power button or anything will respond... I'm in the process of trying to get it to come back on.

Well, The other day I picked up a Asus ABAE-LE (From a scrap yard, Actually.. Along with a 23 inch acer flat screen that had a broken power button but otherwise works fine) Long story short, When i try to boot 98SE on it, it gets to the clouds screen and the bar at the bottom endlessly scrolls. I left it overnight to see if it would overcome it, and it wont. Does the same thing with ME, But Boots XP, 7 (Both on a SATA HDD), and even 3.1, which I find odd. It has a AMD Athlon64 in it, which I thought might be the culprit, but I dropped a semphron (Which I also got out of a motherboard I got at that scrap yard...) and it does the same thing.. Is there any way for me to get around this, is this board even capable of booting 98, or am I going to have to reinstall? If that's the case i'm going to wait until my new-to-me 185gb hdd gets here from Ebay, and install it on that because i don't want to lose all of my drivers for my other motherboard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Motherboard specs: Asus AB-LE, which I believe came out of a Compaq Presario SR1650NX Edit: On the board it looks like AB-LE, but according to the internet is A8-LE, so I assume thats correct. 512mb of ram at the moment, but I have it where it can handle 1gb 35gb Pata (IDE) HDD Amd Athlon64 or Semphron Does anyone know where i could find graphics drivers for it? It appears to have a ATI radeon x200.

Is there any way to uninstall this(Or where are the files located to uninstall the SP)? All it did was kill USB ports(Tells me that NTKERN.VXD couldnt load the device drivers in device manager), and make my computer slow..

Scanreg wouldnt do anything, BUT i did something (Not sure what) But now it will boot to safe mode. When i tell it to boot normally, it boots to the windows 98 boot screen, then the screen goes black.. About what you said for me to copy, I have no idea where what you want me to copy is. ....and now it booted normally.

One is a PS2 type Emachines keyboard (My Backup keyboard) and the other one i use is a USB keyboard. Brand is apparently just "Smart keyboard". Picked it up at a garage sale a few years ago. Both work fine. I tested them on another computer. Ive put the HDD in another computer, and the same error. When i start scandisk, i get this: Scandisk is unable to check a drive because there is no extended memory driver loaded on your computer. To check this drive, make sure you have a HIMEM.SYS file on the disk from which you are starting your computer, and then restart using the 'command prompt only' option (Not safe mode, command prompt only). Depending on the location of the HIMEM.SYS file or DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS file on your boot drive....

Alright, I installed ImgBurn,a web browser, and avast (I have already gone in and deleted these programs, i might add). After i did that, avast told me it needed to restart the computer before it would work, so i did. Now heres the problem. It came up with the options ( Safe mode, ect), told me to go to command prompt and run ScanReg because some registry file was screwed up. I did, and it set on the ScanReg screen over night, to no avail. When i try to start it in safe mode, it says "While intilizing device VKD: Windows protection err" I read up, and it said something about a bad keyboard could do this, so i switched keyboards, and even tried once without a keyboard connected. No luck. Anyone ever had this problem, or know how to solve it? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions.I might look into buying one of the cards that GreenPalmer listed above. Thanks! MultiBooter, You listed one that you had on your "Dual core" desktops.. What motherboard and processor do you have?
-
I would like to know which wifi cards that you have that work good with windows 98. I have one that plugs inside the computer ( Having a brainfart, cant remember what the port is named) that is compatible with 98, but the utility doesnt let it connect to anything. I have a USB one as well that is supposed to work on 98, but when you start the utility, it just makes the icon appear beside the clock on the taskbar, and wont open when you click on it. It worked fine on my windows 2000 computer, so i know it is a good card. Anyways, Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have a HP Pavilion p6000. Is it at all possible to install 98 on this machine? I read about some sata patch but the guy says "You need my sata patch" but never leave a link or tell where to get it. The specs on my computer are: Athlon X2 220 8Gb ram ATI Radeon HD 4200 (I know there arent win 98 drivers for this) I really wish that computer manufacturers would tell what motherboard it had.. Looked the mobo over but see nothing. Thanks!

Today i tried to boot up the comp. I started and got "DISK BOOT FAILURE, ENTER SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" So, this comp has had issues with just being retarded and telling me this when things are fine, so i stick it in the dell. It then tells me that registry stuff is screwed up, and to boot to command prompt and have it check stuff, ect. I do that, and it didnt fix it. When i tell it to boot normally, i just get command prompt. I dont know whether it can be fixed, or if i need to reinstall the OS. That would kinda suck, because after a great hassle i got my USB flash drive to work.. Oh well.
-
Well crap. I didnt want to have to go with a 512kb.. Thanks for telling me that it wasnt compatible. I would have wasted 7 bucks..
-
Would i be able to replace my P4 2.4 with a 3.0? Current is: 2.4/512/533 One i want to replace with: 3.0/1M/800 I dont know if my motherboard would accept something that large The board is a MSI MS-6714 845 chipset.
-
Well, i got 98 to accept 1gb, so i guess i'll just live with that. I dont really want to spend $21 on windows 98, because i doubt i will ever use up the 1gb i have now. Thanks though.
-
And where abouts could i acquire your patch? Being able to use 1GB+ would be wonderful. Thanks! I booted up my computer after applying no changes today, and my sound doesnt work.. I've uninstalled and re-installed the driver 5 times. Its a Realtek AC97. If any of you have had an issue with this card, fell free to comment. Sound works fine in other operating systems, by the way.

Is there any way to update to a fairly recent version of java? When i try to run them it just says it preformed an illegal operation and will be shut down. Also, there isnt any way to get 98 to accept any more than 512mb, correct? Im using a 256 stick right now because it wont accept my 1gb card. Bought a 512 off of ebay, but it is defective and will soon be sent back to the seller to get a working one..
