I haved a removable harddisk rack (ViPower), with a harddisk installed in it but not plugged always. i knew that there exists a tools called SwapManager that allows hot-swap of harddisks without restarting windows, but i've never used it. but now I tried to put in the harddisk and switch on the rack, then in Device manager I made a Refresh hardware, seconds later the hard disk is there, I can see it's drive letter, and read the files. How is this possible ?? btw: i have a quite an old motherboard, Asus A7V133.

So, nobody knows about this? putting an unsigned sys driver file instead of an old version will allow correct installations of WinXP? i saw the the MassStorage Driver Pack has an updated version of the file, that seems to simply replace the original windows certified one.

I got a new harddisk recently, which is above the 137gb limit, which i connected to the Promise Ultra100 adapter. Windows XP by default has a driver for this device, but it's an old version that doesn't see the whole drive capacity, an updated driver from Promise website is needed to let WinXP see the whole capacity. how can I integrate this new driver in Windows XP setup? the guide on how to integrate textmode drivers gives the method, but at the end says that the driver should be compressed (optional) to .sy_ extension, but the old drive filename is the same, and is already there. can i just compress the newer fileversion and replace the older one (with no txtsetup.oem, or any other file), or should i do the same process but rename the new fileversion? btw, the new version files (cat, sys) are not signed, while the Microsoft version is a signed one... PS: with nLite, when i select to install textmode drivers it warns that i cannot use the OEM Preinstall folder, is this true?

Why do some usb devices (and also the Pocket PC IPaq's) put large warnings to install the driver before plugging in the device for the first time? what happens if we plug the device first??

I started making an autorun interface for my x-in-1 windows 2000/xp, using Autoplay Media Studio, now i have a 99.9% interface similar to the original windows xp setup.exe (same fonts, same graphics, ... a complete clone [check screenshot]), but i have one problem... i was unable to get all commands to work in my interface, calling an exe or opening a webpage is OK, but the xp setup has a couple of things i was unable to close: - Check system compitibility: what file/function does it call to open this window? - Install optional windows compontents another question, does anybody here use Autoplay Media Studio? i have few scripting problems with it too. when it's done, i'll publish it here so that people can use it in their multiboot cd/dvd...

I always shut down the computer by hibernating it (Hibernate feature in windows XP), like this it boots up faster. after the last windows fresh-install (few months ago), and some memory problems (bad memory module, now i replaced it), everything went ok, till a couple of weeks ago: sometimes (once every 2 days) after that Windows wake from a hibernate session, i get the screen of the desktop but it's freezed, nothing moves, if i restart with the restart button, the computer will boot, but it will not detect the harddisk, and the only way to make it work is to power off the machine and power it on again, like this the hard disk gets re-detected, and windows work again (asking to delete the old hibernate file or not). SMART tools says the harddisk is OK, everything within normal parameters.... what could be the problem?

I want to register a lot of apps at install time, i currently passed in the registry and exported a [progname].reg file for each program, and edited it to keep reg data and some configs. can i import all of them in the registry using some FOR %%1 in (*.reg) do regedit /s %%1? or better to join all reg files into 1 big file? where should i add such line to allow the import into CURRENT_USER? btw, is there a way to add a new user and then import some reg values into the Current_User key for that user only?

Add a modem connectoid during unattended install
ramik replied to mniccum's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
in my case, with windows xp, the file was copied read-only, and didn't show the connections in "My Network Places" properties, where usualy i can see the connections in groups (broadband, dial-up, etc). -

Unattended with an option not to install app
ramik replied to ramik's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
WOW this is GREAT.................................. -
Since about 1 month, my Windows XP started behaving strangely, errors, shutdowns, reboot, i thought it was from SP2 (which i installed a week before). til yesterday when it won't boot even, after the startup xp logo, it just reboot, even in safe mode. i spent hours till i was able to put a clean winxp on another partition, and guess what, it also started the same problems. i went and tried memtest/goldmemory/memdiag software, and they all say i have bad memory... goldmem reports that i have 2 bits corrupted (every new seconds i get an error in some location, it writes 0000000 and reads 040000, etc). i didn't change any hardware options (only replaced the cd writer to a dvd writer, and this was in july). i have A7V133 Motherboard with 384MB (256+128)of SD-RAM, running at 133 MHz bus (the same as from 3 years ago). what is the solution? i know i had to try the memory module each one alone to know which one is bad, and also try them on another computer, but this will be tomorrow, today no time.. ideas: - could it be dust on the pins or something? - old age of memory? - heat? case temp these days is 30-35, in summer it used to reach 40-45 sometimes.

Unattended with an option not to install app
ramik posted a topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Is there a way to make the unattended installation ask if you want to install extra apps (in batch files, or runonceex) or not? with a timeout option to a default (yes or no by default)? -
Unattended winXP on DVD: same as CD?
ramik replied to ramik's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
in my last post, i intended to say i solved it. the problem was that i made the iso with cdimage.exe, and burned it in nero selecting CD as media, not DVD. i used win98 because once of a sudden, my only OS was not starting, not even safe mode, so i wanted to fresh install another xp, but first to get the data i had on that partition, and after hours, the only i could do was to put win98 and nero on another part to make a bootable cd of xp sp2... -
Unattended winXP on DVD: same as CD?
ramik replied to ramik's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
ah, ops.... i used nero 6.3 (latest) in win98. i selected the image, but in the window to burn nero has a combo on the upper left to chose what type to write to, i didn't change it from CD and put a DVD.... reason: i was so angry on my windows when i made it (as i had big problems with the xp i used, and i spent hours to install another os on another partition) -
Unattended winXP on DVD: same as CD?
ramik replied to ramik's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
returning to the main topic: i made an iso of windows, it was still small (less than 700mb), and nero refused to burn it to dvd, it asked for cd-r/rw only.... i need to make the manual import in nero to copy to dvd? -
Hi, i want to install ati driver in unattended mode (silent mode), i searched this forum, but didn't find what i want... one asked if installing 4.9 is like 4.8, and the answer was simply yes, and i didn't find that for 4.8. it seems there are 2 methods to do it: 1- make installshield iss files (-R parameter). 2- inf files, but only main driver. is there a tutorial/complete guide on how to make it? thanks
