  1. Try using Dial-A-Fix to repair the Windows Installer service. Google it for a link. Welcome to MSFN!
  2. Ewido and Ad-Aware are two other tools that might be able to help you find the source. When you're at the windows desktop, are there any instances of iexplore running (without IE running).

    Updates

Whenever Microsoft figures out how people are patching the previous versions and they can make new ones...
  4. Sounds like a malware problem...Follow the links and instructions in the Malware Prevention forum. Moved to Malware Prevention
  5. @ripken - That's the next version of what I've got (i.e. Rally2 vs Rally). They're mostly the same, and have both had wicked reviews. 1GB for $26 can't really be beat.

    Remove WGA

RemoveWGA is alright in itself since Microsoft has supplied the instructions on how to do it, and someone just wrote a program to do it. Replacing the files with patched/hacked files is not allowed. Topic Closed
  7. If you used nLite on your install (I'm guessing you did), then you know where to look for more information. Automatic doesn't necessarily mean that the service runs all the time. For example, the Computer Browser service will stop running if it doesn't need to be running - likewise with the Windows Installer service. If there's nothing to install, why does it run?
  8. What what would you compare the MD5 sum to? AFAIK, Microsoft does not supply hashes of their files, but the installers have internal CRC checks, so they won't run unless they're complete.
  9. Well... it loads fine now. I guess the Freeware Files server was down at the time causing the text to define the width. Might still be good to set the width incase this happens again?
  10. A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is leaning against the headboard smoking a cigarette, with a satisfied smile on its face. The egg, looking a bit p***ed off, grabs the sheet, rolls over, and says, "Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question."
  11. @Famer - what Mary-Jane wall is that?
  12. You could try reinstalling the Windows Installer service with Dial-A-Fix.
  13. Screenshot That's what I get in Opera when I load the frontpage. As you can see, on the side pane, the image from Freeware files isn't loading, and it wasn't set with "width" and "height" tags, so it takes the width of the "alt" tag if the image can't be loaded. Should be pretty simple to fix.
  14. *testing*
  15. *investigating...*
  16. 250GB drives will always show up as 233GB in Windows, since manufacturers and computers define a "gigabye" differently. Manufacturers: 250GB * (1000 MB/GB) * (1000 KB/MB) * (1000bytes/KB) = 250,000,000,000 bytes Computers: 250,000,000,000 bytes /( (1024 bytes/KB) * (1024 KB/MB) * (1024MB/GB) ) = 232.830643653 GBSo you're not actually missing any disk space - it was just never given to you in the first place. And yes - we all know it sucks. Welcome to MSFN.
  17. WUD UL Schema Probably the easiest way is to take one of the pre-existing ones and modify it for those languages. The updates for each language should be the same, except for the language itself (i.e. KB numbers would be the same).
  18. Unfortunately, getting XP to install on anything other than FAT32 or NTFS is pretty hard to do...
  19. I just switched to Diskeeper on my laptop. Goodbye to manual defrag passes...
  20. May I ask those people interested (just for curiosity's sake), why would you want a proxy? WUD is just sending HTTP requests to the Microsoft servers, so it's no different than if you were to browse to the webpage and download the files yourself. AFAIK, critical updates are still available without WGA.
  21. Upon re-reading your post.... Samurize might have an option or a plugin that will allow you to show the external IP of your network on your desktop. Hopefully you might be able to find what you need. I know that there's an AveScripter desklet for AveDesk that will show you your external IP.
  22. To solve ALL your problems with IPs, port forwarding, and other crap like that - install Hamachi. It's small, simple, and your IP never changes. You can even access the other computers by their computer name.
  23. You also use a lot of programs that are standalone - which isn't the case for most people.
  24. Yeah... it was one of those "Do-it-once-and-never-again" mistakes... And also another reason to test these things out in VMware...
