Dave-H - In add/remove programs, I see MS Office File Validation Add-In, which got an Update for MS Office 2010 (KB2825635) on 5/14/2014. In my MS Update history, I went back as far as Dec 2012 but did not see any references to Office 2010. (There are many references to Compatibility Pack and Office 2007, which I understand is normal for my Office 2003.) Hmmm. Anyone else?

Hey, gang! At least three days early, but I have a yellow shield update prompt for Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2881030) 32-bit edition. But I have only MS Office 2003 with the 2007 Compatibility updates (I think). Or am I wrong and there are some 2010 pieces of Office on my XP system somehow? Hey - three days more and then we all go BONKERS !!!!
-
Dencorso and friends - What's your verdict on this Win 7 Pro 64-bit "roll-up" KB 3156417? Its description looks OK (says two issues are fixed), but some commentators elsewhere are suspicious. Thanks.

Dumb Q - A week ago, on my Win 7 Pro 64-bit, I installed first kb3138612 and then kb3145739 specifically to make downloading of updates faster, as recommended somewhere. Last night I UNinstalled kb3138612 because it is on this thread's Stop Win 10 list. Seeing a reminder about faster Windows Updates for Win 7, I just REinstalled kb3138612. But I am now worried that I have installed kb3138612 and kb3145739 in the wrong "order", with kb3145739 now "first". ► Am I ok, or should I now UNinstall kb3145739 and then REinstall kb3145739 so that the two KBs are installed in the right "order"? Sorry - I'm making myself dizzy - and thanks.

All good here as well, and a word of thanks again to all the experts who have kept this thread going. Best one anywhere on this topic. In fact, I just made a modest donation to MSFN. Least I can do - keeping my XP machine running has been a real time and cost saver.
-
So world-wide tech people and pen-pals - How are these 8 or more updates? (I have 10 because two are for Office.) Everyone happy? It's Spring in NY and maybe Fall in Brazil, but is XP still the same (and healthy) everywhere? Are we all still dancing?
-
All done, but again Avast AV Free interfered. I had to suspend it to finish these three: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3148198) Windows XP Embedded Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3135993) Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2016 (KB890830) Hope a bad guy didn't sneak in while the door was open.
-
Hey - is everyone happy with yesterday's XP updates? No over-dramatized celluloid death scenes badly acted by your PC thinking it's Paris Hilton in House of Wax? Also, is the .NET 4 update in MU the same as Bersaglio's at ►this post◄ ? Thanks.
-
FranceBB - Thanks for reminder. May we also have a reminder which Registry keys do the hack for the POS OSes that are continuing? I only did the one key - Is that still the right one? Thanks to all.
-
heinoganda - in fact, I have all of your .NET updates already installed although a few that you list for .NET Framework 3.5 sp1 appear under the captions ".NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2" and ".NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2" in Belarc. But all the KBs are already in. And my XP machine has Avast AV Free and MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit Free, and I occasionally run Avast scans and normal MalwareBytes scans. I also have Spywareblaster Free and Spybot S&D Free, and I keep them both updated for their Hosts lists. So far, so good. To Dave H and FranceBB - maybe we should start a new club: XP POS Spotters. Thanks again.
-
heinoganda - thanks for very helpful post! When I compare your link's "List of .NET Framework updates for Windows XP after April 2014 here" to Belarc Advisor, I see that I am missing everything you list for .NET Framework 3.5 sp1. 1) Can I simply download from your list and run, or must I alter the downloaded files first? 2) After I update my .NET 3.5 with your downloads, am I vulnerable to security breaches because MS is no longer updating any of my .NETs? Does this mean I must finally move away from XP? Just a few weeks ago, I saw a true XP POS terminal in a hardware store. Is MS not updating .NET for those machines? Danke.
-
Gang, esp dencorso -- I have all the MS Update updates for my XP, but are my .NET updates lagging behind? Just ran Belarc Advisor, and my last updates for four types of .NET are dated 12/14/15 and for another type 10/8/2013. Dencorso, old guru, is this because hmueller's manual list needs new entries? We're relying on you to lead us out of the mist, old paint. (If I tried to do it, the only good result would be a discount coupon to Benny's Car Wash on 11th Avenue.) And apologies if you've already updated - can you point me to the right page? For .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2, .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2, .NET Framework 4 Client Profile and .NET Framework 4 Extended, the last updates are dated 12/14/15. For .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, the last update is dated 10/8/2013. Keep in mind that these five categories are the captions as they appear in Belarc Advisor's hotfixes installed page. Many thanks to all. See you at Benny's.

Firefox drops "ask me every time" and DOESN'T TELL ANYONE
glnz replied to glnz's topic in Technology News
Just FYI that I've spread the word about this to some tech reporters. But all finding this thread or my two links at top should do what they can to push Mozilla to bring back this essential protection. -
All: My updates went well (I think) except that Malicious Software Removal Tool didn't install at first and then didn't run by itself when I tried again. So I looked, and my MRT.exe file is modified date Feb. 12, 2016. Also, I am running it now, and its title bar says Feb 2016. Is this the new version? Thanks. Belay that! The new version of MRT.exe is March 2016. I finally got it installed. Ignore alien orders! Also, after the ten updates, I now have the updated .dll files for Outlook Express 6 described by Dave-H above. So far no problems.
-
Dave-H - Many thanks for good info! That KB is one of the ten I see on my list. Is your OE6 still doing well after you close and restart it? Can you open very old emails as well as new ones? Does it send/receive without snags? It's probably my most important app with my most important data.
-
Dave-H - Thanks. My WABIMP.DLL, WABFIND.DLL and WABMIG.EXE in the Outlook Express folder are all 6.0.2900.5512 last modified April 13, 2008. My SECLOGON.DLL and OLEPRO32.DLL in the System32 folder are both 5.1.2600.5512 last modified April 13, 2008. SInce my OE 6 is working well despite GBs of emails in 15 or so OE folders, I won't touch. Maybe your updates are a Brit thing. Also, I have IE8, and I know from experience that OE6 is strongly connected to IE8. Haven't done Tuesday's updates yet so don't know about any license for MRT.
-
Dave-H - Actually, Outlook Express 6 with all my emails going back to 1966 is the main reason why I stick with XP. (There's no obvious way to move everything into Win 7/Win 10, with a similar email client, with any assurance of success.) What Outlook Express updates did you get? Happily, I didn't get any, but very curious to know what you got. Can you show a list? Thanks.
-
My shield has just appeared - two days late as always - and shows me the same ten updates as I listed above. Dave-H, dencorso and friends - are they OK - are your machines still happy? Or is the Fire Dept. still hosing them down? Of course, this wonderful thread has kept me on my XP machine almost two years too long. I've never actually gone to the trouble of moving anything to my Win 7/Win 10 machine. I like XP, Office 2003 and Adobe Photoshop Elements from 2001 (no version number) too much. dencorso - are there any new manual updates to add to hmueller's box list that you re-pasted three± pages above? Did you start a new thread for that only? Thanks.
-
OK - Maybe I should be a little more helpful. I don't have the nasty regedit key, and when I ran Microsoft Update just now, it showed ten available updates: Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3140735) Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3140709) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3139929) Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3139852) Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3139398) Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3139914) Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3140410) Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3139940) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2016 (KB890830) Security Update for Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3 (KB3114900) Still, Martini-sipping is more important tonight than pushing those buttons, so I'll wait for your reviews of these before tomorrow morning's coffee and button-pushing. Cheers! PS - I ran the update manually. The shield is not yet showing. But it's usually a few days late anyway. Lazy guy, just like me.
-
Hey - guys - it's like all of you are suddenly rummaging around in the closet looking for something. Peace and quiet for 27 days and then - blammo! Since the closet is stuffed with tech people right now, I'll hang back, sip a Martini and wait for the hubbub to subside. As always, please let me know if your XP machines keep chugging and puffing contentedly with the new parts. Thanks guys!

GrofLuigi - exactly. Please also post your thoughts at the two links, and in Mozilla feedback, and spread the news about this. -
Firefox drops "ask me every time" and DOESN'T TELL ANYONE
glnz replied to glnz's topic in Technology News
Trip - thanks for sympathy. But I hope this thread catches the eyes of those who (like me) definitely used "ask me every time" and consider it to be an essential first step in browser security and privacy. Even IE still has its own version of "ask me every time". I urge those surprised by Mozilla's lack of consideration to complain to them, and to re-post this info elsewhere, and to suggest where I should re-post to catch Mozilla's attention. Why isn't Mozilla focused on keeping FF the most private and secure browser? What exactly does it think it's doing? -
Mozilla has just eliminated a crucial security component of the Firefox web browser. The cookie control setting “Ask me every time” is now gone. It was deleted from FF 44. In addition, Mozilla DIDN’T TELL ANYONE and automatically changed the related Firefox option setting to “Accept [cookies] … Always”, for everyone. And that's ALL cookies, not just third-party cookies. This feature was the #1 reason why I and so many moved to Firefox in the first place – instant fine-tuned easy-to-use control over cookies before they stick. There is no substitute. Because Mozilla didn’t announce this, and because there is no visible sign of the disappearance of this important feature, most users don’t know that they are now allowing cookies that stick. There are two very good threads about this: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2987945 and http://www.ghacks.net/2016/02/05/firefox-44ask-me-everytime-cookie-option-removed/#comment-3819357 To all the experts here at MSFN -- I hope you know what I’m describing. I’m NOT a tech. I’m only a real estate lawyer. But this was truly an essential feature of Firefox. Without it, Firefox is no more secure than Chrome or anything else. Probably less. Why is Mozilla going backwards? What’s its motive? Because MSFN is an unusually knowledgeable group, and because this tourist would like to see Mozilla change its mind, I urge all MSFN participants to re-post and re-send this where it will do the most good. Can someone here start a movement? Thanks.

NoelC and others - My home Win 7 machine now shows two updates available: 3118401, captioned "Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows", and 3121255, captioned " "0x00000024" Stop error in FsRtlNotifyFilterReportChange and VSS backup of PI Data server fails in Windows" What do you think about 3118401?

SD73 - thanks - not needed this month - all went well.
