  1. Hey everyone, I've had this issue before however its becoming an issue now. Basically I have this issue on multiple PC's and multiple IT co-workers have had this in the past but no idea how to fix. Whats happening is when I have a microphone on the computer it say works fine off the webcam. However if i want to plugin a headset so I can use it more in a more private fashion what happens is the the mic on the headset seems sooo low that no one can hear unless I go tapping the mic hard so someone can hear the tapping but no voice, even with the sensitivity cranked to 100%. I've played all over the place trying to figure out why windows does this, its not really related to the application as I've noticed over multiple applications that use the mic the same thing happens.
  2. Hello guys. I was hoping you guys may know of some free software to turn a Win32 box into an ISCSI server. Obviously I'm hoping there is some freeware out there. I know about openfiler however it doesn't work on the hardware (linux kernal keeps crashing). I know of Iscsi Cake (http://www.iscsicake.com/ ) however its not free. Just curious if anyone else has done anything like that. Just trying to use some old hdd's and server for a cheap test lab Iscsi unit.
  3. Hey guys not sure if anyone else is running MAK's however I work at a company where MS has given us a 1000 pc MAK key, however machines are often re-imaged and it seems to take another MAK when re-imaged so the count on my MSmvls site keeps going up. Anyone have a similar setup advice ?? Any help is appreciated.
  4. found the answer incase anyone else needs it http://www.biztechmagazine.com/article.asp?item_id=300 basically Administrators %windir%\system32\grouppolicyusers\s-1-5-32-544\ Non-administrators %windir%\system32\grouppolicyusers\s-1-5-32-545\ User-specific policies %windir%\system32\grouppolicyusers\<ssid>\ Local computer policy, computer config. %windir%\system32\grouppolicy\machine\ Local computer policy, user config. %windir%\system32\grouppolicy\user\ the stuff above is where it all sits. If you need to copy the policy to another machine just need to copy those files. Definately not ideal but what I needed for my quick solution. Enjoy. Brandon
  5. Hey guys so I know you can use gpedit.msc to edit the local machine policy, and I know how to use Server 2003 to edit the group policy, obviously with Vista there is some stuff missing from the group policy editor in Server 2003. I saw http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727029.aspx article explaining how to prep a server 2003 domain to take Vista group policy. Which I will eventually get to (my company is always nervous and wanting to go slow). That being said though I heard there is a way make the changes on a vista machine and you can export a file which if you place on a vista machine it will take those settings or something of that nature. Anyone know if there is any truth to that ? So is there a way for me to make the changes I need with gpedit on a vista machine and then deploy a file to other vista machines to get the same settings without having to go through the above article and changing AD?
  6. I'm actually kinda shocked. That MS article actually fixes it the issue. SP1 for vista doesn't though. So anyone who having the same issue give the patch a shot.
  7. installed Vista Sp1, still get the error. Might try that patch on a test machine just incase it breaks other things lol.
  8. odd, the symptoms match however its copying to a NTFS formatted USB key. I will try and install SP1 I guess as it says its relased in a future sp. I will try it and post here the result
  9. Hey when I try to copy files to a USB key I always seem to get an error that says "invalid ms-dos function" however if I go to a command prompt and do the copy it'll work fine. I have no idea what is causing this. Anyone else run into this ?? I search this site and google and there appears to be lots of people getting the error but no one seems to know what the solution or even cause is.
  10. yeah you were totally right. I was using /install rather than /inf. I didn't realize you could use INF. I also had to mount 2 rather than 1 as its got 2. Thanks for the help man !
  11. yep I was doing it just as you posted above. However I copied the boot.wim from the Vista dvd. Does that make a difference ?? I notice if I create the wim the way the documentation shows you by typing "copype.cmd x86 c:\winpe_x86" it creates it and I can add the drivers however it boots to the command prompt. Is there something special about the boot.wim taken from the Vista DVD that can be replicated?
  12. Hey guys I have what hopefully might be an easy question. I'm using the WDS server here at my org and we've got some new IBM's which the boot.wim that is on the vista DVD doesn't have drivers for. I have the drivers and have loaded them onto a wim file that boots to a command prompt. However if I set that as my boot.wim for the WDS server I don't get the nice menu to choose my image file and all that. What makes it worse is that the boot.wim that does work with the nice menu and such I can't seem to add the drivers because if I do I get the "The image directory specified is a Windows PE image that was previously prepared with the /PREP command." message. Is there a way to re-create that boot.wim where I can add the drivers and still use the full GUI that my SD guys are used to ? Any help is appreciated.
  13. alright I have some Lenovo machines with the Intel 82566DM-2 Cards. I read the MS article which seems to have the same symptoms which is basically not loading the network. However it talks about making the inf's under 4k. The files that the thing comes with are like 56+k. How can I get this down to 4k ??
  14. So I have it so sp2 installs silently and everything for my users which is no big deal. However is there a way to have it so through the registry I can turn off or modify the settings for the firewall ??
