  1. Although I can't find the source now, I do remember reading in some documentation from Microsoft that if they were to discontinue the activation servers, they would release an update that would disable the need for activation. I'll update this post if I can find the original article...
  2. Wow, thanks for that info....if you asked me yesterday to compare a Celeron M and a Pentium 4 I would have assumed that the Pentium would blow it out of the water. I actually had a chance to play with them both today....and I was surprised the P4 was so slow (although I know it did have 512mb ram). The Celeron system was actually a lot faster. It's only $50 and it's just for internet browsing and basic stuff, so I think it's worth it. Thanks for the info!!!
  3. The Celeron 1.5 is faster than the Pentium 1.7?? I always thought Celerons were bottom of the barrel...
  4. Need to make a quick decision here between 2 laptops for basic internet/email/office work for a family member. Model A is 1.5 GHZ Celeron M with 2.0 GB of ram. Model B is a 1.7 GHZ Pentium 4 with 512 mb ram. Both are running Windows XP. If you had to choose, which would have better performance?
  5. I have a blu-ray player and an older-model DVR that both require an ethernet connection. Unfortunately in my new house, I can't run an ethernet cable to this location. I had the following idea and need some advice as to whether or not it could work: Obtain a network bridge such as Netgear WNHDE111. Plug both ethernet devices into that, and bridge it to my current netgear router (which is 5ghz/N ready). Does this setup sound like it will work? I originally wanted to set up an old wireless router to do this but it seems it's not possible with some of the older models. Any thoughts?

    Porting IE9

I think that IE is kind of a special case when it comes to porting, as it's so tightly integrated into Windows. However these issues will probably come up more as software gradually stops supporting XP. However given XP's still wide use on many systems I think we'll see a project (or projects) like KernelEX to help port newer applications to XP.
  7. Haha...well if you have any ideas I'd be happy to buy you a copy! B)
  8. Yeah, I've tried it. It's also known as the white-screen fix (which happened on some older ATI cards). It doesn't have an effect on this issue.
  9. Yeah I figured this would be a tough one. The game runs, but there's only interface (i.e., the 3D graphics are just blank). As I said I narrowed it down to 16-bit DX6 calls. I've tried a few VM's that do use hardware acceleration but none seem to use DX6. My video card is a Radeon HD 4650 and there's nothing special in the event viewer.
  10. I'm not really sure if this should be in software or hardware so feel free to move it! I'm trying to get an old game, Star Wars Racer, working on my PC. Although it's an old game, I can get it to run in XP and Windows 7 without a problem. It turns out that the video card is the problem. I could run it with an old agp card, but not with newer (pci express) cards. It turns out that the problem is the fact that the newer cards don't handle 16-bit DirectX 6 calls. Is there any workaround for this? Maybe emulation software or something like that? The game is old enough that it could probably be rendered in a software mode, but unfortunately this is not a built-in option in the game. Any thoughts, or is this a lost cause?
  11. Actually, I did some further research...one of the old games is Star Wars Racer. The last card I used it on was a Radeon 9600xt AGP, which worked fine. Seemed like newer PCI express cards can't run the game. I spoke to someone about this, and it seems that it's actually caused by the card's inability to handle 16-bit DirectX 6 calls. I don't know if there's any kind of workaround for this, or a 'wrapper' that might work...I don't know enough about graphics and DirectX. (Maybe this could be a new topic)
  12. Getting ready to upgrade a fairly new system from XP to 7. Currently I have a Radeon 4670 PCI-express as the main video card, as well as an older nvidia card in a regular PCI slot (because of a few older games that won't cooperate with PCI-e). Each card runs on its own monitor, and I just switch the primary (in display properties) when I run one of the older games. This whole setup runs fine. However, the nvidia card does not have any Win7 64bit drivers available, so I'm going to pick up a cheap PCI nvidia card that does (looking at the geforce 6000 series) which does have the driver support that I need. But before I go and buy it, I want to make sure, can this still be done in Windows 7? I've heard that now multiple video cards have to use the same driver, I don't know if that's true. There's no problem at all with this setup in XP. Any help would be appreciated!
  13. I've tried the VM additions as well as the unicode and other fixes suggested...same problem. I'm willing to chalk it up to crummy video driver support in VPC. I haven't read anywhere of this same problem on a real machine. I'm open to any other ideas...
  14. I should have specified, I'm running in a VM (VPC 2007 to be exact). It's very possible that it's a driver issue, but I don't think anything can be done with the video driver in VPC (?). If I had something compatible with 9X I'd try it in a real machine. Also, if it makes a difference, Firefox 2.x builds don't have this problem. @patclash: Thanks for the idea. I gave it a try restoring the fonts but it didn't fix this issue.
  15. I'm having an issue with KernelEx and some fonts (I didn't want to add to the KernelEx thread because I'm sure I'm just missing something). I'm using 4.5 Beta 2 and Firefox 3.5. Fonts on menus, dialogs, and webpages are completely missing in Firefox, and on some installers there are blocks instead of characters. I suspect it has something to do with unicode support. I've installed all the available updates for 98, and I've tried adding and replacing some of the fonts. I've searched the forums but can't seem to find a solution. Any ideas? A screenshot is attached.
