Well, I'm not that savvy, I just popped in the 4ksector drives and all seemed to work, except windows defrag doesn't seem to like it. Since its just movies and TV,not requiring great speed, can't remember the exact dialogue box but it wanted me to backup first before defrag, something about partition info,I'll check it again but the machine is rendering a file and I'll have to wait to free up the taxed cpu, so i just left it. EDIT: just ran defrag now [23:00EST] only up to 'Analyze' and the dialogue box didn't come up again, so I'm just going to leave it because when I copy over the files will end up contiguous anyhow.

Dumb question... Will this affect Thunderbird or is it time to hunt for an alternative? -

Future versions of Firefox on Windows 2000

Well, when the time comes, I'll give Pale Moon a try, especially since it takes the same extentions and if there is a PortableApps version, I mean why not? My password manager from Protecteer couldn't be any more awkward without the toolbar and the company is dragging their a** by not going beyond FF 3.6.26. -

I located WB's KB2393802.but I'm going to wait until I have another machine or backup boot drive before to try it on. Thanks for all the work though. -
Future versions of Firefox on Windows 2000

I guess then I'll have to adapt, if I can't get Wild Bill's or BWC's kernel to work for me the only alternative would be one copy of xp pro upgrade for this workstation, then nLite my 2000 CDs and just use 2000 to run the capture cards in dedicated refurb computers and go to Linux full time. I'm at least glad I have 'till June 5th. -

Where is the actual announcement? Google groups that you pointed to isn't the real Usenet. I'm finding hard to swallow but there's always filehippo to get earlier versions for a new system build. Especially since I haven't been savy enough to suss out BWC's patches. Isn't Mozilla supposed to be part of the open source community? I've been using open source stuff mainly Open/LibreOffice and VLC media player on the 2k desktop and dual booting Linux for modern features. The only App that has been 'holding me back" has been Protecteer's SignUp Shield which has been stuck in FF ver. 3.xx.xx for some time, for a long time I've been wanting to upgrade to FF 9 or 10 but their app hasn't gone forward. See their FAQ. http://www.protecteer.com/asp/home.asp The only hardware, my two MyHD - MDP 130s ATSC capture cards that run on 98/2000/XP. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=493691&page=404 I guess I'll have to adapt, using 2000 and maybe XP[for its' better hibernation] for embedded "one job only" stuff and drift to Linux for full time web surfing because I'll be damned if I'm going to buy copy after copy of that crap that needs product activation. -
Re: Windows 2000 Professional boards/chipsets
Browncoat replied to trimis's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hooray for AMD and I see from some sales promos for bare-bones that the Sempron is still supported, as i have some applications/work for lower wattage single core CPUs. Despite the 3x the speed I haven't been impressed by my P4s, they seem no better than a PIII unless you go to a dual core. -
Will Win2000 pro do everything 98 does ?
Browncoat replied to Stuckin98's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
You've confused me Jaclaz, are you dissing or endorsing xxclone? Because of its' properties I've used xxclone ever since 'discovering' it over at majorgeeks. I like it. -
Did forum search here..results: "No results found for 'video converters'." Ice films.info is down, they provided links to .avi files the alternatives only point to .mkv which my machine needs a little more oomph to use, then i found out that the linkers do their own converting spent all morning looking for a converter that doesn't need extra crap like GDI+ or Dvix6, latest VLC can handle 720p avi on my machine OK but .mkv gets pixelation, stuttering, I take that to be the single core P4 I need to run the one MDP-130 in DVD mode in the workstation. Figure converting would help. Might as well delete your responses guys. addendum: Sept 1st. I found SUPER © and a basic guide for it,simply put it is a GUI for all those command line converters out there. I've had success after a few hiccups, mostly with downgrading AC3 to MP3 2 channel {there's also a Windows AC3 filter available] getting excellent results in 720p for two of my favourite shows that are running their current seasons. SUPER © at majorgeeks and Filehippo guide here: http://forum.videohelp.com/images/guides/p1608146/basicsuperguide.pdf

Free AV / Firewall for Windows 2000 Server?

You already mentioned Outpost free..which I migrated to from Ghostwall [both found at majorgeeks.com] but GW is good though no longer supported and gives a report on LAN activity. -

Running Windows from a CF Memory Drive as a Fixed Disk
Browncoat replied to spinjector's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Then there is cost, in Canada the cheapest SSD I've seen is the 30gig OCZ at 79.95, you can buy 2-4 high quality CFs or SDHCs for that and still afford the adapters. and unless you hang it loose, it needs a 2.5 to 3.5 cage adapter added for desktop use. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4364403&CatId=5300 and it takes up a SATA port that you could use for a data drive or RAID config, if you don't have a mobo with multiple, say six SATA ports. If you want to use that empty IDE port: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=5301 200$ BIG FAT EDIT: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4143846&csid=_25 OOPS! I was previously unaware of these, please forgive my ignorance, so for me, the question remains, are these adapters reliable? Since I'm still 'up in the air' about booting off alternate media, as opposed to magnetic discs. I may go this more expensive route in the end. Maybe in a couple of weeks. I'd still like to see the 30gig OCZ drop in price more and learn about partitioning these, for as stated above both my OS installs are just under 6 gigs each. pointer: have you partitioned your SSD? how did that turn out? just like an ordinary HD? and right now I am out of SATA ports, unless I add a PCI card. -
Running Windows from a CF Memory Drive as a Fixed Disk
Browncoat replied to spinjector's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Been considering those as well, can go either way based on what I can get locally. Was just tilted towards CF by {an article I can't find now} the fact that CF is an open format and SDHC has DRM, either as part of the standard or in the controller, as I said I can't find that three year old article again. Though for a cost saving,I don't see me needing anything more than 16gig cards of either type. EDIT: Found this; http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Compact_Flash_boot_drive but not the other. -
Running Windows from a CF Memory Drive as a Fixed Disk
Browncoat replied to spinjector's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Those were your recommendations and I see at newegg and elsewhere that 400x and higher are MLC, at one time with Home Theatre PCs I was concerned with improving boot times for moments of those quick power disruptions so that the HTPC could resume recording as soon as possible but now that I download, speed isn't that important to me now. Lower power consumption is, so how about the Transend 133x in 8 and 16 gig sizes? Whatdathink? -
Running Windows from a CF Memory Drive as a Fixed Disk
Browncoat replied to spinjector's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Dumb question about disabling indexing...{I haven't done it yet} Why disable? Is there a difference....? curious as both my W2kP and Linux are less than 6GB used space so an 8gig CF for each should be enough as using a bracket version of an adapter would need a cold start for swapping anyhow. -
Will Win2000 pro do everything 98 does ?
Browncoat replied to Stuckin98's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hhummm..... something else I've been looking for! For fresh off-line installs. Right? So, if I understand the board, I don't need to integrate it with anything else, it will install separately on its' own minus the Big LBA utility [which I already have on disk]. Time to burn another CD! -
accessing *data* files stored on DVD-ROM
Browncoat replied to Ninho's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Odd, with W2k, my MDP-130 and DVD43 I have the opposite problem, keeping such little buggers from launching, unless launched from the DVD menu, after which the 'digital' copy or extra writes itself to the HDD, usually to a folder I don't want it in. -
Frustrated with motherboard manufacturers ....
Browncoat replied to Browncoat's topic in Hardware Hangout
Thanks for moving thread, though my main concern was still running with W2kP and finding h/w it will still run on with minimum effort. -
Did I crab about this already, or was that another forum? Anyhow, it is either this: http://www.ibt.ca/v2/items/mb886p/index.html for my ROM card {Atari ST 2.06 ROMS} or: http://www.transduction.com/transduc/tratxq35.htm with a utility from sourceforge that emulates TOS with Gemulator. but my main PITA is the "lost" parallel ports, though my old HP 920c,10 years old, does have the old USB hole in the back, it'll need a new chord... and the dumping of PS2 ports. I mean I have a plethora of PS2 keyboards and mice/trackballs, so why buy new to send the old to a landfill? Plus since someone brought it up, the one board has ICH9 (don't recall whom) but on the data sheet says compatible with W2k. So they must have drivers on the cd for it. More expensive than the 'civilian' boards and not nVidia based like the EVGA and MSI boards I used to like. Well, got some thinking to do, just venting.

Wow! hate to necro post but this is exactly the information I was looking for. Especially since newegg.ca has recently listed SSDs under 100 bucks! Was wondering about using W2kP (or even '98) because most of the reviewers at newegg were talking about their netbooks or Win7 on their SSDs. I only wonder because one reviewer of the 32Gig OCZ said not to format or de-frag the SSD because of the built-in wear leveling[good for Linux systems]. So I'm wondering about partitioning as I stated elsewhere my need to dual-boot W2k and Linux. Do you think it will work without harm to the SSD? Anyone here, '98 or 2000 using an SSD to boot/launch apps from while still using their large drives for storage?

What about the DST patches? I have them stored but forget the URLs from whence they came.

Error starting Media Player Classic and other players
Browncoat replied to KevinR's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I gave up basically, see my posts about not being able to integrate BWC's various utilities. Take a look at what the Win'98 users employ. I get most utilities from www.majorgeeks.com For a media player I now use the open source VLC media player it is up to date and even runs on '98. Though I do use Linux 90% of the time for on-line activities, I'm booted into W2k right now because legacy items like my two MDP-130s need windoze to function and there are TV shows that need to be recorded tonight Linux is a lot easier than it once was and one copy can go on more than one machine. Mozilla products are cross-platform[just copy one profile folder into another] OpenOffice is the same in both and I went with the portable apps route so that documents and projects can be shared without the need for a -su command but I still find myself starting in Word'97 but cleaning up in O-O. If you have a lousy ISP,like me, a small stipend can get you a ready made CD/DVD from http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/products/linux explore and see which distro you like best. As I said before, OSs are just tools to get work done, not something to fall in love with. Where there's the will, there's a way. Good luck!
