    Password expiration

Not 100% sure, but my guess would be looking in your registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon there should be a key named PasswordExpiryWarning that specifies the # of days until expiration. I believe this key only specifies the length though, and I suspect there is another key to toggle the expiration on and off (and if it is on, this duration specified by this key here is honored) but I have not found it yet.

    Password expiration

The first True/False is for 'Active' i.e. whether or not the account is active. The remaining 3 True/False are for 'Blank Password', 'Must Have Password', and 'Can Change Password', respectively. This made me realize that I was wrong: Looks like there isn't even a True/False for the password expiration and thus, the setting does not get saved in the presets file. Still, the issue remains that the box reverts on being checked when loading my preset and my isos are such that Windows will eventually ask for a password even though I always uncheck the password expiration.

    Password expiration

bump can anyone try and reproduce this? It is easy to try and only takes a few minutes... thanks
  4. Yeah maybe I confused things and was not too clear in my previous post by saying that the ATI Hotkey Poller service messes up with winlogon. Actually, what I am seeing, and I can reproduce this, is that the issue arises when the ATI Hotkey Poller is disabled. Thus, if you have an ATI card and driver installed and disabled the ATI Hotkey Poller service this might be the cause. At least for me this was the explanation although it may have been something specific to my system as well.
  5. this is good information. I am not convinced however, that it is Winlogon doing funny things, I suspect the ATI driver might be the culprit, see my posts (especially the last one) under this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/Strange-issue-wi...gon-t81944.html ATI hotkey poller seems to mess up with the logon process. This could be at least part of the explanation.

    Password expiration

Hi, Can anyone confirm this bug?: (I had initially reported this here http://www.msfn.org/board/Administrator-Ac...486#entry754486 but never got a reply, and my post was not fully on topic with the thread anyways so I thought a new topic would be best) The issue is that the Password expiration = "false" setting is saved as "true" in the presets file. This is really annoying to me, and I believe nLite produces WinXP ISOs with password expiration enabled even though I unchecked password expiration (I always uncheck password expiration in nLite, but on several occasions I was asked to change my expired password on my user accounts and this should not have happened.) A simple way to test this is: 1) On the screen where you configure user accounts, remove the check box for Password expiration, for all users. 2) Verify by clicking on each user that the password expiration is really deselected. 3) Save your preset. 4) Reload the preset and see that the Password expiration check box reverts to being checked instead of unchecked. 5) You can also open your preset file you just saved, and check the sequence of true and false under the [users] section. You will see that the setting for password expiration has been saved as "true". Edit: I was wrong on this one, looks like there isn't even a True/False for the password expiration and thus, the setting does not get saved in the presets file. Still, the issue remains that the box reverts on being checked when loading my preset and my isos are such that Windows will eventually ask for a password even though I always uncheck the password expiration. Anyone else see this?
  7. Ok thanks for the feedback... yes I see now that my issue is not the same as the original poster but I think there are some similarities nevertheless. Regarding the administrator account that "does not appear on Welcome screen unless it's the only account and you are not auto loging", did you mean "unless it is the only administrator account"? I do see the administrator account on the welcome screen, it is not the only account, and I am not auto logging. It is only when I create a second administrator account that the first one disappears.
  8. Anybody has additional info about this? I still run into this issue whenever I create a second administrator account from the windows control panel i.e. my initial administrator account gets deleted (or at least hidden) from the welcome screen. I was able to find since then that even though it is not available on the welcome screen, if I disable the welcome screen and fast user switching, I am able to logon using the original administrator account, but I still find it weird that I am unable to create a second administrator account without making the first one inaccessible.
  9. so... does anyone has any idea as to what the issue could be. I still did not manage to fix the problem, I got the expiration problem again today even though I disabled password expiration as always. nuhi, I may have additional info on this. Looks like the password expiration settings are not saved properly to the last_session_u.ini file, at least under certain conditions. Basically, my settings are as such: User #1 = Administrator (renamed to "coch"). Autologon = None. Logon count = 0. Password expiration = false. Blank password = false. Must have password = true. Can change password = true. User #2 = leyabe (Power User). Autologon = None. Logon count = 0. Password expiration = false. Blank password = true. Must have password = false. Can change password = false. Guest account is disabled. The issue is that unchecking the Password expiration is not being honored. This happens with the latest beta 1.4.5 as well. A simple way to test this is: 1) Stay on the screen where you configure user accounts, remove the check box for Password expiration, for all users. 2) Verify by clicking on each user that the password expiration is really deselected. 3) Save your preset. 4) Browse to your preset file you just saved, and check the sequence of true and false under the [users] section. You will see that the setting for password expiration has been saved as "true" 5) Immediately reloading the preset at this point will also revert the Password expiration check box to checked instead of unchecked. I hope this helps fixing the issue.
  10. ... MAY affect...MAY cause... sounds like they are trying to scare the unknowing based on potential issues
  11. actually, I have the same issue, and the Password expiration = "enable" and "0 Days" should not be the issue because setting the expiration to 0 makes it so that the password never expires (the enable check box however, seems to randomly revert to being checked when I had unchecked it, but that's another issue). I guess I'll just have to rename the default admin account and not be able to setup a second one.
  12. I experience a similar issue as well, and I do not have spaces in my user accounts. Basically, I rename the administrator account in nLite and it is active. Post WinXP install, if I create a second user account from the control panel and make that account administrator, the one that was setup by nLite gets deleted (or hidden) at the next reboot. Is this the intended behaviour (i.e. the default admin account reverts to its hidden state when another one is manually created?).
  13. I also got this issue, when updating to Firefox 2.0.0.1, Firefox complained about JRE6 being disabled for incompatibility, however, I found the Java plugin 100% working anyways, I mean, other than the notice from Firefox saying it was not compatible, I found Java totally working and no other side effect. That is using Sharkès Java package.
  14. hehe no problem. yeah i hope so too, but im reasonably sure I tested it enough: disable ATI Hotkey Poller service, reboot --> problem is there reboot again --> problem still there Set ATI Hotkey Poller service to automatic, reboot -->problem fixed, reboot again --> problem still fixed repeat the steps above several times. I did all that so im pretty sure now.
  15. Hi Nuhi Ok i found the issue, 100% reproducible now, but you need an ATI card to experience this issue. the cause is that I was disabling the ATI Hotkey Poller service using a reg tweak. Disabling this service will cause the issue I reported for some odd reason since it only supposed to manage ATI hotkey features (which I do not even have since I do not install the ATI control panel, I install the driver pack only). Re-enabling this service (manual won't do, it needs to be set to automatic) will solve the issue. I think it is probably not related to nLite, although it is strange that I have been disabling this service for ages, even before I started using nLite in the nLite ~0.8 days and only had this problem with the 1.0+ versions, but then again, it could very well be a change in the ATI driver, which I update regularly with each new ISO (I reformat every 1-2 months). So for now, users with this issue that have an ATI card, try setting the ATI Hotkey Poller to Automatic if it is not and see if it works for you.
  16. Hi, few issues I had with this release (very nice work by the way, I like the new look and added components, the processing seems faster also, which is great!): - My administrator user account is now called the name I define in the Full Name input. i mean the administrator account does not use user name specified, but rather used the Full name. Previous versions behaved differently, user name was user name, and the full name was not used for an user account except showing in the system properties "registered to" - My Lexmark Printer didnt install right again, I integrate it and it does some installation upon first boot, but it asks for files and even when I browse for them it doesnt accept them and I have to abort installation. - Several windows flicker on screen after T-13 - Direct burn did not work. It looked like it was working i.e. the progress bar completed fine and it said write complete or something, but the whole process took only like 1 or 2 seconds only so I thought it was suspicious. The directory structure on the CD was created as I could see files on the CD, but they were not really there and the ISO did not boot at all. - ISOs CD created with nLite burn image feature reads slower than if I would have burned ISO with Nero for instance.
  17. ok let me add more information to help reproduce this. 1) In nLite I set autologon for administrator account with blank password. 2) Install nLited WinXP ISO based on my preset in my post above. 3) Upon first boot in WinXP well I customize tyhe appearance of windows, enable uicklaunch bar, etc... then proceed with installing a few apps 4) When everything is installed (and I rebooted) I create four additional administrator user accounts because and I use fast user switching because I often need to switch between two or more administrator accounts. these are the only 5 user accounts I have (i.e. the initial one + 4 additional), and all are administrator accounts (guest account is disabled) 5) I reboot after having created the additional accounts (WinXP autologons on my main admin account) 6) I then press Win-L to see the logon screen and I clock a second account to logon a second admin account. this always works fine. 7) I press Win-L again to logon a third user account. Now I am asked for a password, which should not be there because password is set to blank. Trying to return to one of the first two accounts already loged in results in the same issue, namely I am being asked for a password. 8) Variant: if after logging the second account I try to return to the first one instead of trying to log a 3rd account the same thing happens I am asked for as password. This is really strange that I can log two accounts but after that everything fails and I am doomed to hit the shutdown button on the logon screen. Troubleshooting I did: a) Trying random passwords does not work (I was desperate enough to try). b) I saw the other thread about user accounts: an iso with or without active directory services has the same issue. c) Sometimes just after reboot before even trying to log a second account, if i go in the control panel user accounts, select change the way users logon and disable fast user switching then re-enable it, I can logon all my accounts without problem but the issue of being asked for passwords will come back after a few reboots. a registry tracer did not find any registry change in this disable/re-enable fast user switching operation. d) Still occurs with 1.2 beta. I was hoping the new user account creration page would fix this especially the logon count option, but it didnt. Even worse, my fix in c) above doesnt even work anymore. e) I tried setting passwords on all accounts. when asked for a password as described above, I typed my newly created password but it didnt accept it. Looks like something triggers my windows installation to reset password to something else I have no idea about, or windows enters a state where it wouldnt accept any password. I hope this will provide more information and help replicate the issue. Again, I started experiencing this only starting with 1.0.1, never occurred before, although I have since reverted to 1.0 and the problem occurred as well. My presets have been the same for a long time, the only other change I had in my PC is some of my software are now of more recent versions. I also changed motherboard 2 months ago.
  18. the button is now there using 1.2 beta
  19. dont know the answer to your question, but i've also noticed that with nLite 1.0.1 my standby button was disabled despite the fact that I did not change my presets, and I don't know why.
  20. additional clue perhaps, I managed to fix temporarily (I am sure the problem will come back after a few reboots) by going in the user accounts control panel, disabling fast user switching, and re-enabling it.
  21. ok I take back my words, this still occurs with nLite 1.0, although again it took more time for the issue to occur. --> nLite 1.0.1 with own preset: the problem occurs on first try --> nLite 1.0.1 Safe component removal: I could do a few logins and reboots before the problems occurred --> nLite 1.0 with my own preset: Took even longer for the problem to occur I would login and reboot many times but now the issue is back today. I am posting my preset here. Any solution anybody? coch.ini
  22. ok, problem fixed by using nLite 1.0 Final (keeping the same presets). Dont know what could have changed between 1.0 and 1.0.1 with regards to user accounts.
  23. ok bad news, this is still hapenning with "Safe" component removal, although it took more time to happen i.e. before this occurred the first time I switched accounts, while with "Safe" componnt removal I was able to access my other user accounts several times (and I thought this was somehow fixed) before I saw this problem coming back. Nobody has any clue about this?
  24. Hi, I am having this weird issue with 1.0.1. I have blank administrator password and logon set to automatic. This works fine. However, as soon as I create at least one additional user account (administrator accounts only), when I use fast user switching to logon a second account Windows XP (SP2) asks me for a password for each account when I try to switch back to another one. This is bad because my passwords are blank, and it won't acept a blank password. So basically, as soon as I switch to another user account the result is that I am locked out from ALL accounts, since it asks for a password and I have never set any password. I even tried with purposely setting my own password and tried again, but it will not accept my password either (password was set only seconds before). Seems like logging to a second user account triggers some kind of "bug" that sets unknown passwords on all existing user accounts. Everytime I am forced to reboot, and upon reboot the autologon works fine on the main administrator account. This means that now I am limited to a single account, but I really need to have at least 3. Anyone else has this issue and hopefully have a solution? What is strange is that I never experienced this issue before with previous versions, and EVEN with my previous ISO made with nLite 1.0.1, and I have not changed any setting at all. Additional strange things I noticed that I never experienced before is that my CD rom letters are inverted now (i.e. before my DCD was H and CD-R was G, and now it is the opposite) and it changed without me changing anything, but that maybe unrelated. On a side note, I remember that in the nLite 0.9x days (yes I havent posted for a longtime) disabling hibernation completely disabled it, but with nLite 1.0+ I disable hibernation but it can still be re-enabled only by ticking Enable Hibernation in the power options copntrol panel (before, the tickbox was greyed out, it is not anymore) is this on purpose? edit: forgot to say I have already reformatted 4 times today, so yes it does this on a fresh install. Im gonna try with "safe" component removal now, although I still cannot explain why my own preset always been fine and now it doesnt work.
  25. same process but i register QTPlugin.ocx before copying QuickTime.qts in system32 Any similar solution for the realplayer codec?
