Most data got damaged after converting FAT32 to NTFS
jaclaz replied to RYU81's topic in Software Hangout
I missed it at first. OP put the software name in a thread tag: Paragon Partition Manager 12. Good , but ALL the other questions and the "general advice" still stand, without my crystal ball (it's in the shop, again ) there is nothing I can do to help . jaclaz -
Well, seemingly they also cannot (or don't care to provide this technology to FBI) what should be a much simpler core (for people possessing super-computers) i.e. decrypt a hard disk: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/28/brazil_banker_crypto_lock_out/ There is something else that it is sometimes not highlighted (IMNSHO) enough. Since a lot of time, the world is a tower of Babel, there are more languages and dialects than stars in the sky, there was a recent criminal case in Italy where a communication (a normal, cellular phone call) has been intercepted (fully legally, i.e. in accordance to a Court order) in which a suspect, talking in an arabic/maghreb dialect supposedly said something to the effect of: "May God forgive me, she is not the one I killed!" That is according to the interpreter that was initially called to translate and transcribe the recording. According to another interpreter, the sentence was actually meaning something to the effect of: "May God make him answer the call!" and another one: "God, why doesn't the call go through?" and another one: "Why, why doesn't he answer the phone, why God?" and some 4 (four) other different versions similar to the last three ones. Now you can understand how the first equates to a confession, and all the others to some form of cursing from someone that tries to talk to someone and doesn't manage to do that and is consequently annoyed. On the other hand, even in a litlle country like Italy, still some dialects survive that are understood and talked ONLY in a very limited area. With all due respect for the NSA and the US military, I never had the impression they are - generally speaking - particularly versed in polyglotism, and allow me to doubt that computer aided analysis is that much effective when it comes to "spoken language" (anyone that ever trained a voice interface will know what I mean). jaclaz

That is IF the computer manages to boot again after the "combined effect" of MS updates and Norton. , there is actually nothing preventing (excluded some proper testing procedures) something like this from happening again: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/118290-sp3-registry-corruption-bandaid-solution/ Please consider how the above happened with a (long due) "full" Service Pack (i.e. giving all the time needed for proper checking) and not with the usual MS update, which might be issued quickly. jaclaz

Most modern laptop mains adapters/battery chargers are "auto-ranging" from 110 to 240 V Ac (and 50 to 60 Hz). Check the actual adapter. You will need a physical adapter from the "US" plug to the AUS one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AS_3112 . But even if the power adapter is only 110V/60Hz, you'd better (easier, faster, more economical and "safer") get a replacement charger/adpater for the laptop capable of covering the range ( or a spare 240V/50Hz one) rather than a "generic" converter from 230/240V to 110V. jaclaz

Who said "remote access"? The KB talks of "user views". Typically, someone sends you a "specially crafted" document of some kind embedding a special True Type font that vectors the exploit (or sets up a website for it). Read: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/bulletin/ms13-053 the part titled: TrueType Font Parsing Vulnerability - CVE-2013-3129 Mitigating Factors jaclaz

Well, with all due respect : A new idea would be a OS that can measure instantly the IQ of the user (through some specialized hardware, face recognition or something like that). Something like (pseudocode ): IF user IS NOT LIKE "demented" THEN GOTO :StartMenu ELSE GOTO :NCIjaclaz

Most data got damaged after converting FAT32 to NTFS
jaclaz replied to RYU81's topic in Software Hangout
Previous version of WHAT? Converting WHAT? What has Paragon to do with this? How/Why/What company would be allowed to have a Paragon software without serial? "other pc" really helps to understand the differences when compared to the "one pc". How can I make a recovery console ISO into a bootable USB?

How can I make a recovery console ISO into a bootable USB?
jaclaz replied to a topic in Install Windows from USB
Sure, the point is that there are different methods and several different "tricks" that you may want (or want not) to implement, including running it form the .iso "as is" (but thus forfaiting some of the useful tricks) or using a .img in a Ramdisk, etc.. Here are a couple methods: http://reboot.pro/topic/5316-recovery-console-not-working-from-usb-stick/?p=41614 And here another couple ones: http://reboot.pro/topic/5316-recovery-console-not-working-from-usb-stick/?p=70268 The most straightforward is probably this thread here (which was NOT among the ones I posted before): http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=11393 http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=24880 Post #7 in the latter: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?s=&showtopic=24880&view=findpost&p=171330 is one of the most detailed, step by step, set of instructions you can find. jaclaz -
Actually one of the few meaningful pieces of info that page has is that it is a Wi-Fi device , you know, like: From what it is said about it, you can make one today DIY by cleverly putting together a Wi-Fi IPcam, a VoiP handsfree phone and a couple more sensors/gizmos. You cannot, that's the clever part. Besides russians reverting to typewriters, is seem like people that attended a (yaawn) security conference in 2012 thanked the organization in handwriting : http://proconf-iceland.com/HackerHalted/(not so loosely connected to misinformation, badly designed sites and what not) Just for the record, in the event, for a mere several thousands dollars fee you will be able to meet and hear the speeches/presentations of information technology and security leaders like Jay BavisiEric LopezPaula JanuszkiewiczJennifer LesserDave ChronisterKevin Cardwelljaclaz

How can I make a recovery console ISO into a bootable USB?
jaclaz replied to a topic in Install Windows from USB
Yes. http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/FGA/questions-with-yes-or-no-answers.html Here: http://reboot.pro/?showtopic=2254 http://reboot.pro/topic/5316-recovery-console-not-working-from-usb-stick/ http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20983 http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=21049 (several different methods) The two "key" enhancements are obviously the "no more CATCH22" trick and (through editing the bootsector or using grub4dos) bypass the "blue screen": http://reboot.pro/topic/2362-makebscmd-alpha-release/ http://reboot.pro/topic/2362-makebscmd-alpha-release/?p=18878 jaclaz -

@X. Make the minimal possible XP system you can make (still booting): http://reboot.pro/topic/3717-xpsp1-with-full-commandline-and-ntfs-below-10-mb/ make a copy of it. Run a "repair install". Make another copy. Compare differences. Admittedly a part of the result won't be "reliable" as you will need for the test to use minlogon, but, set aside initial authentication, all the rest should be "the most amount of changes" that a repair install can produce. It would be easier, much easier, if you use, instead of the "manual" or "through half-@§§ed batches by jaclaz" the nice little Winbuilder package by misty here: http://minixp.reboot.pro/docs/files/index.html jaclaz

IPB Update July 2013 (to version 3.4.5) - BUGS Only
jaclaz replied to xper's topic in Site & Forum Issues
Look, I don't want to be grumpier then usual, but if I am in my User (or member) view, or Control Panel, then I may be interested to new members , but if I am in my §@ç#ing "My conversation" and click on "View New Content" it means that I went there to either write a new PM or read a received one, and once finished I want to see View what happened on the Board in the meantime, like if somethng New was posted to it (please read as added Content) hence I click on the "View New Content". When you are in "My Conversations", you are in: MSFN Forum ->Messenger->My Converstions Now, if clicking on it would lead to New Content of the Inbox My Conversations, it would make (some) sense, but "members" and "PM's" have nothing in common. In my day if I wanted to know what new members had joined, I would press a button labeled "View New Members" . This is like Rule #1 of ergonomics, NEVER have the same command do different things! Please consider how this is also politically incorrect as it likens a human being (the new member) to Contents of the board. I can say nothing about Tformers.com, but about reboot.pro it is OBVIOUSLY the SAME, WRONG, SENSELESS behaviour as that board uses the same software as this one with the further handicap of being managed by (IMHO) less expert Board Admins than Xper is. At least, with the exception of a new little nuisances and a few bugs, each move on msfn.org to new software releases has - in some time - gone well, notwithstanding the stupidity of the Board Software programmers. The same changes on Reboot.pro have EVERY TIME caused serious problems, some of which were NEVER fixed/repaired. Maybe it is not a bug, it is just a senseless setting propagated by the IPB guys, i.e. it is "by (flawed) design" BTW, if I am in: MSFN Forum ->jaclaz's content or: MSFN Forum->My control panel->Settings->Profile Settings The "View New Content" lists Board threads "normally". jaclaz -
Install Kurt_Aust's up-to-date XP X64 from USB possible?
jaclaz replied to tordenflesk's topic in Install Windows from USB
Only partially OT, and JFYI, there is a newish thingy for booting from USB VurtualBox that you may find useful (after and besides the solution to current issue): http://reboot.pro/topic/18736-virtual-machine-usb-boot/ http://reboot.pro/topic/18217-booting-virtualbox-with-usb-workaround/ jaclaz -
To be picky the "all" might mean "some" and in any case limited to colour laser printers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printer_steganography http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=48 https://www.eff.org/pages/list-printers-which-do-or-do-not-display-tracking-dots For NO apparent reason, a couple not-so-random links: http://www.zeroshell.org/ http://www.plugcomputer.org/development-kits/guruplug-server/ And (this time slightly OT, but not much ): http://www.thebigfix.com.au/ http://www.thebigfix.com.au/?p=50 And - curiously enough - sometimes we enter a loop: http://www.thebigfix.com.au/?p=467 http://makezine.com/2011/04/28/if-youre-going-to-kill-it-open-source-it/ guess what you do when your good idea fails miserably? You insist on it some ten years later or so! : http://www.smartwatchnews.org/2004-microsoft-spot-watch-smartwatch/ jaclaz

Yeah, the "news" (if any) are just the (crappy) slides. Look a bit around for the book: The Shadow Factory: The Ultra-Secret NSA from 9/11 to the Eavesdropping on America by: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bamford It is published in 2008 and contains some reference to xkeyscore ad similar alright. Let's say that at least this time the whistleblowers failed to blow hard enough or however the whistle came out a little faint, before the mass of mindless journalists and blogging jerks ping-ponged these non-news back and forth saturating the net with the topic. I see it not entirely unlike someone publishing in - say - 1919 the original, handwritten manual and drawings for a COLT M19A11 and titling the article "New, deadly weapon revealed!" jaclaz
-
I would say that it is not-as-secret-as our Germans (or Brazilians) friends seem to think (or try to "sell" to the world). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Keyscore More than one company is recruiting "in the open": http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=Xkeyscore&l= specifically for x-keyscore. I doubt that if it was a top-secret military/NSA ONLY *whatever* you could find job requests about it. Besides not-that-much-covert linkedin profiles such as (example): http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130617/13482623512/discovering-names-secret-nsa-surveillance-programs-via-linkedin.shtml https://twitter.com/csoghoian/status/346139237856460801 http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jason-miller/39/741/a49 I have the impression that people in the US Army and in the NSA spend more time inventing and remembering codenames (and making crappy PowerPoint slides for them) than anything else, just for the record: http://www.bullypulpitgames.com/projects/names/new_names/ http://www.bullypulpitgames.com/projects/names/new_names/military_code_names.txt jaclaz

Hmmm , this would probably need a new dedicated thread, where I will manage to get flamed by everyone: the "Windows" guysthe "Linux" guysthe "React-OS" guysBTW all good guys :, but quite touchy when you "comment" their beloved creature/preferred OS. The three phases business plan for the Surface RT has been written by Undrpants Gnomes: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/20/surface_rt_cashing_out_while_burning_the_cash/ Some intelligent considerations here: http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/19/microsoft-still-hopes-youll-buy-a-surface-rt-launches-new-surface-vs-ipad-ad/ And another competitor for the "Captain Obvious 2013 Award" here: http://betanews.com/2013/07/19/surface-rt-sales-suck-and-heres-why/ It happened to me last time I was in a Volkswagen showroom, I went there to have a look at an used Polo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW_Polo and suddenly realised that what I actually wanted was a new Golf R: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf_Mk6#Golf_R Get real, Mihaita, you can get 2 (almost 3 now) Surfaces RT's for the price of a "real" Surface. Would this mean that they are worth 1/3 to 1/2? jaclaz
