I just had a look at the event viewer after yet another restart and I found a bunch of these entries under 'System'... Type: ERROR Source: BTHUSB Category: None Event ID: 5 Description: The driver expected an HCI event with a given size but did not receive it. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Apart from the ERROR messages, there are a few WARNING messages too: Type: Warning Source: BTHUSB Category: None Event ID: 3 Description: A command sent to the radio has timed out; the radio did not respond. I guess the messages have something to do with bluetooth. I use an IVT bluetooth dongle with the Microsoft stack, both of which have served me well for a coupls of years atleast. Not sure at all if it could be causing the problem, but thought I should mention it. Also, I downloaded the Memtest ISO (in a zip file) from their website. It contains two seperate archives called 'memtest.iso'. Each of these contain a folder called BOOT, under which there are 2 files, 'MEMTEST.IMG' and 'BOOT.CAT'. I know I am supposed to burn memtest to a CD, but what exactly do I burn here, and how do I use memtest after burning? I appreciate all the help so far guys! Edit: Removed the bluetooth dongle, but it didnt help. PC still restarts like before.

@ gamehead: I did notice a blue screen on a couple of occasions, however it restarted too fast for me to read anything, and again, it doesnt happen always. Had tried removing and reinserting the CMOS earlier, but it didnt help. I dont have access to a different PSU unfortunately. @dondamm: I havent installed any major software recently. Most of it is what I am running since I bought the PC. I'll definitely try Memtest if its freeware. @DigeratiPrime: My PC restarted and I took down the temps at tht point: Mobo: 44 deg C, CPU 78 deg C. This has been more or less constant since before so not sure if it could be the cause. Neverthess, I am definitely open to advice! @Nemesis: I'll try it if nothing else works out! I still feel its more of a hardware problem though.

Hi, This is my config: P4 3.0 Ghz Asus P5RD2-VM mobo Transcend 512 MB DDR2 @ 533 Mhz (single stick) Nvidia Geforce 6600 256 MB 80 GB IDE HDD 80 GB Sata HDD Windows XP SP2 Since the past month, my PC keps restarting. Sometimes it boots till the login screen, then restarts. At other times it restarts while loading itself. Yet other times, it lets me log into Windows XP, and works for a few minutes before restarting. I dont know what is causing the problem. I have not had problems with the RAM since I bought the PC in Nov 05, could that be the problem? Earlier there was a problem where the PC refused to start at all. In this case, it suddenly restarted after 10 days. Also, I stay near the sea and since it is monsoon, could it be caused by moisture? Would you recommend buying a 1 GB RAM stick (same brand/speed) and put it alongside the 512MB one for 1.5 GB memory? What do you feel? Forgot to mention: sometimes while restarting it gives messages like Overclocking failed! press F1 to run setup/Press F2 to load default values and continue. I have not tried any overclocking or other modifications.

For a basic way to send messages on a LAN, use the inbuilt Net Send command. Open a command prompt and use this format: net send <pc_name> <msg>

I forgot to add: I am currently using the onboard graphics from my motherboard, till I hear from the engineer again. Everything runs fine with the onboard graphics, though games obviously are laggy and run slowly. @PuntoMX I have been using the card since november 2005 without problems, till now. If it had been a voltage issue, wouldnt it give continous problems?
-
Update: Its some problem with the Graphics card. Tried reverting back to the older drivers, but it didnt help. Even tried System restore, but again no result. Removed and cleaned the card. No result. Reinstalled the card, no result Have now finally sent it to the service station. I hope to hear from them in a few days. I heard that these cards are built to withstand high temperatures...The status bar is in the green zone when I check the temperature using the NVIDIA control panel page. AFAIK, these temperatures (55-65 edgrees) are what I was getting when I bought the PC and nothing has changed. The engineer who came told me these will not affect the card.

OldWolf: The problem occured with 84.21 drivers also. That is why I upgraded to the 9x series, thinking it would solve the problem. GPU Core temperature: 60 degrees Slowdown threshold temperature: 145 degrees The DX uninstallers I found seem buggy and may actually cause more problems than they solve. Is there any way I can reinstall DX9 without them? Maybe if I install a new game, it will reinstall DX during the game installation process?

This is my config: P4 3.0 GHz Intel 945 GNT 512 MB DDR2 RAM @533 MHz NVIDIA Geforce 6600 256MB PCI-e Driver Version 91.31 DirectX 9.0c Windows XP SP2 Monitor: 17" Flat CRT Samsung Smartbright/Syncmaster Screen Resoultion: 1024*768 Color: 32 Bit Refresh Rate: 85 hertz Problem: Games and screensavers dont work correctly. In screensavers like 3D FlowerBox and 3D Flying objects (any 3D screensaver), the display is garbled and corrupted. In games, the games do load, but the screens are very jerky, garbled, corrupted and the colors blend into each other. The problem occurs in all games I have installed (Cricket 2004, Max Payne 2, NFS Underground 2 etc.). Results in DxDiag.exe: > In the 'DirectX Files' tab, the 'Notes' area shows 'No problems found'. > In the 'Display' tab, all the three DirectDraw tests are fine. > However, in the Direct3D tests, the spinning cube is visible, but is unclear and garbled. I am pretty sure this is a DirectX problem. So, I tried to reinstall DX 9.0c without removing the existing installation. I have the DX9.0c on a Magazine software CD. On the Setup screen, once I agree to the license agreement, it says 'Direct X 9.0 Runtime Install. The install package will search for updated DirectX Runtime Componens and updte as necessary. it may take a few minutes. to start installation, please click Next'. On clicking 'Next', I am straightaway taken to the 'Installation Complete' screen, without going through any intermediate installation/progress screens. The problem of the garbled dsplay in 3D apps still persists even after this. So, I thought to remove DX9.0c and then completely reinstall it again, since it apparently does not install correctly. However, I cannot find a way to remove it. Can anyone guide me in what I should do? I am unable to play games or run 3D applications/Screensavers correctly.

I am using an IVT BlueSoleil bluetooth dongle, and a Nokia 3230. I *am* able to connect the phone and transfer files between my computer and the phone, using the IVT Bluetooth drivers. However, I am unable to connect to the phone using Nokia PC Suite. This is what happens: 1) I run the "Get Connected" Wizard on PC Suite, and select the connection type as 'Bluetooth connection'. 2) On the next screen, i am asked to select the bluetooth stack to use. I select the 'IVT Bluesoleil' stack. 3) Now, when i click 'Next', i get the error: "Cannot use the connection type. Check that all needed hardware, software and drivers are available." The bluetooth dongle is, of course, already plugged into the computer, and bluetooth is turned on in my phone, visibility is set properly. I am using Windows XP Pro wth SP2. I am unable to use the PC Suite application, sonce i am unable to sonnect using Bluetooth. Does anybody know what the problem is and how to solve it? I dont want to have to buy a cable just to connect to the phone, espcially when i have a perfectly fine working dongle (i did mention it works fine, when i use only the bluesoleil application, without the PC Suite). Any suggestions? Could it be that i need a newer version of PC Suite? My current version is 6.6.18.

I thought this would be an easy issue to solve, especially for MSFN members..but judging from the response, it seems different. Is there anybody who can suggest how to solve the problem? EDIT: I shut down Zone Alarm Pro, to check whether that would have an effect, and it did work! So i guess the culprit is Zonealarm pro. Any guesses on what the Zonealarm settings should be, to solve the problem?

I have a few problems with my hotmail accounts since a few days... In Internet Explorer 6 (sp2): With hotmail account 1: When i log into the hotmail site, and access the inbox, everything is fine. When i change the folder to junk mail or to any other folder, it goes back to the login screen, asking to input my username and password. After doing so, i am redirected to my inbox. The process repeats if i again try to access junk mail. With hotmail account 2: On entering my login id and password i am taken to a page asking me to enter a verification string containing a mix of characters and numbers. On entering the information and clicking the button, instead of going to my inbox, i am taken back to the login page. This process also keeps repeating. ------------ In Firefox 1.5: After logging in to my hotmail account, the page that loads is full of code and not my inbox. Refreshing has no effect. (Is this a problem with character encoding? It is set to the default values.) EDIT: Just found that i am redirected to the login page on opening folders in firefox too. same as prb with account 1 in IE :-( Thumbnail for Hotmail on Firefox: ------------ In Internet Explorer, my privacy settings are configured to override automatic cookie handling and to accept session cookies. First and third party cookies are also set to accept. In Firefox also, cookies are set to be accepted. I use Zone Alarm Pro 5.5as the firewall. Cookie Control is set to 'Medium' setting. This is set to block 3rd party cookies and remove private header information. The 'Block Session cookies' and 'Block persistent cookies' check boxes are unselected. Mobile code control is off. Adblock is set to 'High'. I would be grateful if anybody could help, since this problem means Hotmail's webmail is inaccessible to me using both IE and Firefox. I cannot dump these hotmail accounts, because these accounts are important to me.

Will formatting my USB flash drive damage it?
indianarchie posted a topic in Other Operating Systems
I found this site, which shows you how to install and run Linux from your USB flash drive. http://www.althack.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=24&Itemid=27 I have a 1 GB flash drive and I am curious to try this. But one of the requirements is to format the USB drive. Now, I want to know what the effect of formatting my USB drive will be. Will it still be usable after the format? Can it still be recognized by windows after i format it, but before installing Linux on it? What about after installing Linux on it? Say, i format it and install linux on the drive. The total used space then comes to (assume) 200 MB. So i still have around 800 Megs free. Will i be able to use this free space normally, in windows or will it be usable only in Linux?? Has anybody tried this before? -
I ordered mine Earlier i had requested 2 SP2 cds which took a couple of months to arrive!

hi all..I had heard a lot abt GTA SA and i finally bought it...But the game runs very slowly on my PC...esp in the 'drive thru' misson. its so slow i can barely play it, it goes by frame by frame. These are the comp specs: Win XP pro wth SP2 Intel 945 GNT 512 MB DDR 2 ram NVidia Geforce 6600 256 Mb with latest (81.85) drivers Lots of HDD space. ANy idea what i can do to speed up the game? ideally with this config, i should be getting smooth playback right? I have already tried reducing the game resolution to 640*480*32, but doesnt help. also tried reducing draw distance but no effect either. pls help.

My new comp goes up to 50 degrees at times. The processor is P4 3.0 GHz, and MOBO is intel 945 GNT. Is this ok? There are fans for the power supply 350 watts), a side fan on the cabinet, another fan on the back of the abinet, and one for the graphics card. is this ok or excessive?

I have a cabinet with front and back USB ports. The guy who assembled the computer has not connected the front ports. What I mean is, the front ports are there, but nothing happens when I plug my Flash drive into them. I would like to try connecting these ports to the motherboard myself, instead of asking the guy to do it again. My motherboard is Intel 945 GNT. Can someone tell me what I need to do this, and how to go about it please.
