  1. WUD sorts downloaded updates into different folders (Critical, important, etc.) Does the batch file need to be placed in each such folder? Also, can someone provide a batch file to install all updates for Windows 7 please? I already have SP1 installed, if that matters.
  2. Looks like you guys are right. I checked over the weekend and the C2D E6700 is not available in my area (its not on eBay India either). The closest available is C2D E7500 with an Intel DG43 mobo for Rs. 9800/- (processor + mobo). That comes to about 220 USD. Is it worth it? The other config I was offered was an i5 based config (dont remember the specific version or board model) for roughly Rs 15000/- (about 340 USD) which seems high. What do you suggest? Also, would a Celeron E3300 as suggested earlier really be more powerful than a Pentium 4?
  3. Thanks! Does that mean I can go ahead and get the C2D E6700? I wouldn't want to first buy this and then find out it doesn't work with my mobo and I cant give it back. Also, how much of a performance boost would I get over the P4 3.0 GHz?
  4. To get a list of all installed software, you could try the free Belarc Advisor. Download it here.
  5. I ran the tool, and these are my details: Board Model: DG965RY Board Version: AAD41691-301 BIOS Version: MQ96510J.86A.1687.2007.0510.0258
  6. Well, it seems to be a BIOS problem, like Coffeefiend said the chipset isn't the problem but Intel brand motherboard are just no go when it comes to upgrading. You are better off swapping that mobo, CPU and RAM, kick out the 2 80GB drives or leave them in for backup or so and use the 500GB as your system drive. That video card is still not much outdated and will do fine at high settings for most games, if not maxed out. If you gave us a budget we could push you in the right direction . Indeed, that board will not do any 45nm based CPUs, just the 65nm and up. Yes you can use 533MHz DDR2 for CPUs with a 800 or 1066MT/s Bus . What is the BIOS problem you refer to? Can I install an updated BIOS for it to support these processors?
  7. Thank you for that list. I went through it and found this as well: Compatible processors What do I make of the processors on this list...will they work with my mobo? Also, is there any Quad core processor that works with this mobo?
  8. @Tripredacus You are right, I did make a mistake. My current board is an Intel DG965RY. I would attach the manual here, but it says I can upload only 500k and its 4.7 MB. Here's the link: DG965RY motherboard manual If its possible to upgrade only the processor, without upgrading the motherboard, I would consider the Core2Duo or even a Quad. Any good, fast processor suggestions that will last me comfortably for the next 2 years or so? As mentioned, I would like to be able to play the newest games too, so that would be one consideration. I think i3 or i5 would probably be too expensive, and then I would need to get a new motherboard for those too.
  9. This is my current system: Single core Pentium IV 3.0 GHz with Hyperthreading Intel 9G965RY motherboard ATI HD 4830 512MB video card 2.5GB DDR2 RAM @533MHz 80GB IDE HDD + 80GB SATA HDD + 500GB SATA HDD Samsung T220 22" LCD 500 Watts PSU Windows XP Pro SP3 (32-bit) I am looking to upgrade the processor and motherboard to a 64-bit system. Which processor/mobo combination do you recommend, keeping in mind that I will probably not change this again for the next 2-3 years, and that one of my main reasons for the upgrade is gaming? I am looking for at least a Core2Duo. Also it would be nice if you add the approx cost too of your suggestions. While I don't have a specific budget in mind, its not going to be too high. Related question: If the processor+mobo go 64-bit, will my 32-bit Windows still work as usual or do I need to install a 64-bit version? *Edited post to correct motherboard version*
  10. My PC has the following specs: Intel P4 3.0 GHz with hyperthreading Intel 965 Mobo ATI HD 4830 512 MB video card 2.5 GB RAM 80x2 HDDs (one SATA, one IDE) Windows XP SP2 Samsung T220 22' LCD Will my PC run GTA IV with these specs? The minimum requirements state that it needs a dual core PC. Will mine work? Also what is the deal with service pack 3 for Win XP? Will I need to install it over my SP2 or will SP2 also work? I am hoping to run this game in 1680x1050 native resolution. http://grandtheftauto.ign.com/articles/news/1726/GTA-IV-PC-System-Requirements I have the same query for these games as well: Crysis Warhead Gears of War Bioshock Batman Arkham Asylum NFS Shift
  11. Folder Guard should do the job. It hides and locks folders without encrypting them. http://www.winability.com/folderguard/
  12. Wont the Winrar archive create a rar/zip file? What I am looking for is to create an .exe file that includes the supporting files within it. (I dont mean a self-executing archive - since that would mean I first need to unzip/extract the files, and then play. That still leaves us with needing multiple data files and a separate exe, after extraction. I just mean a single .exe file that I can play just by double-clicking on it. Something like integrating the supporting data files into the game's exe, so I only need to click the exe to start and play the game.)
  13. I have a game executable file, and other supporting files for it in the same folder. The game does not need to be installed and plays as long as the supporting data files are in the same folder. Is there a way in which I can combine the game exe and the supporting files into a single exe, so that the game runs only off the exe itself without needing me to move a bunch of related files around if i copy the game from one machine to another? In other words, I need to combine the multiple data files, and the exe into a single exe, so that the game will play when I click the exe (without needing installation). The easier and faster the solution, the better. Hope someone can help.
  14. Sorry about replying back this late, but I have just now gotten around to taking the pic of my power supply. The thought of having to buy a new PSU if I get a new card does put me off a bit though. Please have a look...will my PSU support a 512MB 4770/4830/9800GT? What do you all think?
  15. Just an update: I've added a 2gb stick of RAM and it runs alongside the existing 512mb stick just fine. I think I have a 350watt PSU though I am not absolutely sure. Will try to post a picture of the sticker here later. Will this be enough for the above cards or do I need a new PSU as well? The 4850 looks out of my price range tho.
  16. I do intend to upgrade the RAM to 2GB...just a thought here: my current RAM is ddr2 533Mhz while I'll probably be getting a new 2gb ddr2 667MHz stick (coz 533MHz is double the cost of 667 in my area). Can I use both the sticks to get a total of 2.5gb RAM or will I need to discard the 512 stick? I just looked up the prices of HD4850 on ebay.in and its double the cost of the 9800GT. I'll check out the store prices but it looks out of my reach. HD4830 is expensive too and I couldnt find the HD4770 on ebay.in, so no idea about the price there. Also, I wouldnt want a card that makes too much noise so the more silent the better! Fanless would be best I guess...what are the pros and cons of fanless cards? How do I check the PSU power supply? Is there any utility which lets you do that? Also, any idea about how these cards perform: http://cgi.ebay.in/Palit-Ati-HD-4650-Super-512-MB-VGA-PCIE-Video-3d-Card_W0QQitemZ160340931530QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_203?hash=item25551073ca&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1|66%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A3|294%3A25 http://cgi.ebay.in/PowerColor-ATI-HD-4650-1-GB-VGA-VIDEO-GRAPHIC-CARD-PCIE_W0QQitemZ160340931657QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_203?hash=item2555107449&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1|66%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A3|294%3A25 http://cgi.ebay.in/PALIT-ATI-Radeon-HD3850-512MB-DDR3-PCI-E-HDMI-DUAL-DVI_W0QQitemZ190313645774QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_203?hash=item2c4f93c6ce&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1|66%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A3|294%3A25 http://cgi.ebay.in/NEW-MSI-HD-R-3450-ATI-Radeon-PCIE-512MB-Graphics-Card_W0QQitemZ400054742435QQcategoryZ96874QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286.m221QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DDLSKWL%26its%3DK%252BD%26itu%3DMBMS%252BUCK%26otn%3D2%26ps%3D61
  17. I am looking for a 512MB video card around 5000-6000 bucks. How are the 9600GT and 9800GT? Price wise, 9600GT is for 5k, and 9800GT is for 6k in mumbai. I will be using this card mostly for gaming on a 22" Samsung T220. Which card is better for gaming? Will I be able to play the latest games with these cards? Also, I dont know much about the ATI cards but have heard positive feedback. Is it recommended instead of Nvidia and if so, which model in the comparable price/performance range? I presently have a 256MB 7100GS which is rubbish...it hangs on playing a game as old as need for speed most wanted...even cricket 2007 doesnt run full screen without lag Edit/Delete Message edit: PC specs given in siggy below.
  18. 5612!!!!! :thumbup Next try even better: 5805!! http://www.totebo.com/monkey-kick-off.php?c=qporqUotrouuUorFBoUBopptotFBtozCoEsuq and i didnt cheat
  19. What about HDCP...is that a good thing or a bad thing?
  20. I have a Syncmaster 17" CRT right now, and personally, I like the Samsung after sales service. I'll be combining the LCD with an Nvidia 7100GS 256mb video card. Hope the card supports a decent native resolution. My concern is I cant seem to find a 2ms LCD from Samsung in the market here - most are around 5ms. I have no experience with Viewsonic but their ads atleast say their LCDs are 2ms, and those models are available. I went through some sites for the Samsung 226BW, and must say it sounds all good, both feature wise and user experience wise. Would be a pity if they have been discontinued, as E-66 asks above. One concern: What's the deal with the different panels (A, C, S...) this monitor is supposed to be available in? Can I choose the panel I want, as in return it if its not the original Samsung panel? Is there any great difference, and does the original Samsung (S) panel cost more than the other ones? Also, how do these two Dell LCDs - SP2008WFP 20" and SP2208WFP 22" - sound? Found them here: http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/20lcd?c=in&cs=indhs1&l=en&s=dhs I dont need a Webcam or USB ports on the monitor - if they are there, fine, if not, makes no difference. Again, is HDCP really required/beneficial and can it be turned off? I really dont want any technology that can restrict what I watch on my monitor (like copy-protection used for DVDs/CDs and games). My screen, I watch what I wanna watch - and I decides what I wanna watch!! These comments are most useful, please keep them coming!!
  21. I am looking for a nice new LCD monitor in Mumbai, India. I am into gaming and movies quiet a bit, so I need a 2ms speed and good resolution. I prefer a 19' or a 22' size, on a budget of Rs. 10-13000/-. A couple of options I heard about include the Viewsonic vx1962 and 1940, both with 2ms and 19inch. Does anybody know how good these are? I also heard about the the vx2262 (again viewsonic) but apparently, it has a 5ms speed. Does anyone know any other options that I could check out? Maybe from other brands like samsung and LG? I asked around for samsung monitors, but apparently, none of them have a 2ms speed. Also, how good is the service for viewsonic? I havent bought any viewsonic prodcts before so am unfamiliar with this. Any suggestions?
  22. I have some files in flash (.swf) format which I downloaded from various sites (mainly ecards and small games). Currently, they open in Internet Explorer 6. I cant figure out how to set the options to get them to open in the Macromedia flash player. Can somebody help me with the software reqd, and the settings to change? I downloaded the flash installer from the adobe site, but it seems to be the flash activex plugin for browers, and i still cant get the swf files to open in the flash player. My primary purpose is to open the files in flash player and then convert the swf files to .exe projectors using the inbuilt menu option in the flash player. I dont want to install third party software to convert swf to exes. Adobe site from where I got the flash plugin: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash Windows XP pro SP2 IE 6 / Firefox 2
  23. Have been talking to 3 different comp engineers over the last few days, but NONE of them has come over to fix the prb. Getting so frustrated! And I do open and clean up the PC case regularly, so as far as dust goes, there is not much dust in it, apart from what I would classify as the usual amount found in any PC. @Jcarle: About dust on the CPU heatsink, I dont know how to check that. Do i need to remove the CPU fan and then check under it? I dont have enough confidence/knowledge to remove the CPU fan for fear of damaging the processor. The hardware engineers whom I spoke to all promised to come and check it out but none have come so far @RJARRRPCGP: I am not playing any processor intensive games, not do i run any such application.
  24. How do I use memtest? I have downloaded the small zip file with 2 archives in it, which one do I need to burn to CD? After burning should I just boot from that CD and let everything else happen by itself?
