    Sunday Poll

It's been a while since we've had a poll, I think...? Anyway, here is one, but unusually serious (for me) checking in on OS use and possible alternatives and who knows about their options because I am curious to see how things have changed since I ran a similar poll maybe a year ago.
  2. PVU The energizer bunny on *something*. Dude, do you sleep? Most of us just believe Tomcat has a twin brother, or he is one in a set of triplets.
  3. Put 100,,,,,,,4,0,0,,1,4 after both driver lines, replacing what you have. Make sure you remove the underscore x from txtsetup in txtsetup AND in layout in both txtsetup and layout. in other words, open txtsetup and layout and find: layout.inf = 100,,,,,,_x,20,0,0,,1,20 txtsetup.sif = 100,,,,,,_x,,3 and make them layout.inf = 100,,,,,,,20,0,0,,1,20 txtsetup.sif = 100,,,,,,,,3 Just del the underscore x's NOT any commas. Save. Make another VM in case you've a bad sector. Reinstall and see what occurs.
  4. Hey man! Open TXTSETUP and tell me the exact contents of the entire lines of cdaudio.sys and cinemst2.sys (both before and after running HFSLIP -- it modifies this file). Send me every instance, there might actually be more than once per file. Better yet, if you can email me the zipped file, that would be best of all. Then I'll get back to you in this thread. What I want to check for is too long to explain tonight -- I'm tired. Also, let me know if you're using an OEM. Last, do this in any case, destroy your old VM or create a new one just in case a bad sector on your actual HDD is causing corruption on your VM's HDD.
  5. http://www.desktopplus.com/ will give you multiple desktops in Windows 2000 which does not have that capability natively.
  6. Yeah, let me see, I have an outlook remover on my site. Hold on http://www.vorck.com/data/outlook.inf Yeah, that's it it's way outdated and obviously my fileset uses a different method BUT one of the keys keys.del will do it. sorry its not documented, but if you copy values and search the registry you'll find the right icon.
  7. 1. That's the first thing I do when I download a new HFSLIP. Though seeing as I wrote the first set of instructions I guess that's appropriate Open the file in a text editor. no two 3. That was made so that when someone has problems we here can refer to that folder and ppl know exactly what is meant, among other reasons. 4. The ROOT concept is interesting. Thats' what the SOURCES folder is for really. 5. This is Windows. You can affect scheduling of the 16 bit subsystem but you can't affect whether or not it occasionally grabs focus.
  8. Oleg_II After some trying with XP and LiveCD projects I found some more files could be deleted from W2k and it could be less 10MB or even more too but I don't have enough time these days. Hey if you folks give me a list of filenames I can evaluate them to include in my fileset. I still get email about my fileset, it's still popular, but less so; I can only assume that people don't know how to buy Win2k anymore or think XP runs more software*. I get a lot of requests from people to take their new laptops that come preloaded with Vista and upgrade them to XP. *I see that the Adobe Creative Suite 3 requires XP. Our graphic designer doesn't really have to upgrade so I am keeping her at CS2 for now but I have to wonder why Adobe did this. Anyway, like tommyp says, I feel like I hardly touch the pc these days.

    Windows 2000 (all)

Hi Kurt, although HFSLIP is already compatable with the USP, very few here opt to use it, preferring to simply keep the HF folder full... sorta the same thing only easier, more up to date, and it uses original MS binaries.

    SP5 Files

Heh heh That TommyP does seem to know an awful lot about HFSLIP, doesn't he? Hmmmm! <LOL> Okay now, strictly business Are you using English Windows 2000 workstation? Try this: remove SETUPP.INI from FDVFILES and see if that works. Then we'll go from there. There are lots of tricks to try. ------------------- EDIT You might have a corrupt hotfix file in the IE5 files. For kicks, you -CAN- use my fileset and IE6, it does work, I just don't recommend it, because IE6 has more exploits, and Explorer has odd ideosyncrasies (just one example: when you search for a file, click on a result, and go to File, and then Open Containing Folder, nothing happens.) Give my fileset with IE6 a try as well as removing SETUPP.INI and see what happens too.
  11. Ambassador, you forgot the /OX switch when you ran the WINNT command. For more detail see this guide on this issue, it might well help you. http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=1324
  12. I have a client who has a PC set up for public access. He wants the C:\ drive off limits but wants the D:\ drive freely writeable. (He will be rewriting the C:\ with a Ghost image weekly but does not want to destroy user's data). I don't know what version of XP he is running -- I don't really want to go too deeply into what it's limitations are -- but for some reason, even as Admin, I can't set the D:\ drive to writeable in XP like I am able to in 2000/2003. My thought is this: can I create a BartPE bootable CD based on 2003 and set permissions using 2003? Logic says 'yes' but I don't know if the permissions would stay on next boot (which would be booting up XP). Anybody have any clever ideas or input, I'd appreciate it...
  13. Kurt, rather than maintain that list of hotfixes, you might want to just link to the ones that originated in the HFSLIP forum: http://www.vorck.com/windows/hotfixes_2000.html http://www.vorck.com/windows/hotfixes_xp.html http://www.vorck.com/windows/hotfixes_2003.html
  14. Can be downloaded here... I know, I know, I'm a jacka$$ To make up for it, here is something quick you guys can whip up this weekend. Pineapple Pie 1 graham cracker ready pie crust 1 lg. can crushed pineapple 1 pt. sour cream 1 pkg. vanilla instant pudding Mix the crushed pineapple (including juice), sour cream and vanilla instant pudding. Pour into the pie crust and refrigerate until pie sets, approximately 6 hours.

    very pleased

I am listening to "Trainspotting" by Primal Scream. Also, you actually do not need a firewall on Win2k using my fileset. I know that sounds pretty stupid, but give it a try and see, you'll be surprised. The OS is pretty shut tight by default. As for a virus checker, well, I can't see going without. After all, sometimes viruses hide in all sorts of known-good software. As you have it now, the OS is as efficient as you can get it. You could del more crap out of the registry I suppose. I am tired. Here are some pictures of cake. I'm comin' back on April 19 to try to get y'all to try somethin' new.
  16. Hi guys and gals, I am a happy Paragon Hard Disk Manager user. I just posted info about how to get it as a legit freebie here. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95770 I know I shouldn't double post but I know there are many HFSLIP'ers who: 1. would find this useful, and 2. don't normally visit the other boards at MSFN. The deal lasts until April 11.
  17. I hope I don't get slammed as spamming I am a happy Paragon Hard Disk Manager user. I spotted this info on 911cd. You can download a so-called Special Edition of Paragon Hard Disk Manager from here: http://www.computeractive.co.uk/hdmanager8/index And you can get a serial from them: http://registry.paragon-software.com/hdm8pers/ All legit, needless to say. I downloaded a copy and installed it. I don't really know how it differs from the regular "personal" version, though.
  18. ... proving the value (to others) of returning to post a follow-up. Thanks for this, I was having the same exact error, also 70% then fail. Much appreciated.
  19. mohammadgerami, what gives? Why the thank-you posts? I am getting a flagged post notice about these. Mods have to consider dealing with these. This isn't the way to get a high post count.
  20. I did a comparison of Win2k without IE and XP here. I recently loaded the TinyXP_Rev05, to try it out. It came in at 63 megs of commit IIRC, close to Windows 2000 with IE6. I still want to do memory snapshots of all versions of Windows but haven't found the time. My subjective experience is that Win2k without IE and with a gutted registry* gives a modest performance gain over any version of XP. *Registry size doesn't really matter in XP because it's loaded differently. In Win2k, though, a smaller registry is necessary because Windows loads more of it than in XP.
  21. Wow I started reading this and thought "God, I know the answer, but it would take me an hour to explain it." Then I scroll down a little and see where I already explained it <LOL> Anyway, yeah, leave the comma in, sorry if that wasn't clear. Remember to make edits to TXTSETUP and DOSNET too as my added posts indicate.
  22. Well, I'll comment. Number one, and you'd've heard it from The Big Boss if I didn't say it first, don't use Gurgelmeyer's USP. Okay, he's a great guy, he did a lot of work on it, and it served it's purpose. But look at what you've typed -- the sheer volume of information tells us you're into detailed work. Using the USP might be for some folks, but it isn't for you. A guy like you who makes a literal science of every hotfix should be using all of the separate hotfixes. Generally, and I am sure you know this, HFSLIP will "do the right thing" automatically and replace binaries based on file date. But the USP is adding a layer of complexity you don't need. Download all the hotfixes and populate that HF folder. BTW, HFSLIP pretty much will support any hotfix out there. You're using IE 6, make sure all of those IE's are for 6. I don't know if, for example, a version 5 kernel32 is okay with IE 6. What you have is less a question of HFSLIP and more experiential looking for input on some really, really obscure hotfixes. Have you done this yet and played with the results in any serious way? Back several months ago, maybe even a year, I had loads of obscure hotfixes and IE files. Due to an accident on my part and a beta version of HFSLIP, I slipstreamed this with a bunch of IE5 shell files in the FIX. The OS acted weird. I forget what but little things. I fixed the error and just got rid of all of the fix files and all of the obscure hotfixes and just went with a list here in the forum. I understand the desire to have a fully patched system but I think you're probably the only person here who has had experience with all of these. HFSLIP will no doubt put it all together correctly, and you are doing the FIX correctly. HFSLIP will indeed do some unofficial hotfixes if they are packed correctly (and if they work as a hotfix, HFSLIP will probably handle it fine) so give it a try. Let us know the results. You've given an exceptional, unusual devotion to detail here and I think it's important to have the results somewhere archived in this forum.
  23. Yes If you REALLY want to remove it from installing in the first place, then copy all *.in_ files to a new directory and expand them all with expand -r *.in_ and then run a text search for the desired string, D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF However. Sometimes DLLs create Reg keys, not INF files. (I know, I know). So, instead of preventing, delete this at install by adding this line in INF format to an INF. So, rewrite your line and add it to an INF file's DELREG section. HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}" Trouble is, edit an INF which is digitally protected and your install won't work. So, ya gotta get the 2003 files to allow you to make the mods. Go to http://vorck.com/data/2003/ and grab the dll. setupapi, that is. ignore sakit, it doesnt apply and it would take me too long to describe what it does (you would have to be using it in conjunction with HFSLIP to strip junk out of 2003. go ahead and have a look in it if you like). Edit: you can add your line to your own rewritten sakit.inf. you will find that in 2003 and xp there are a handfull of inf files that do nothing useful, and that's the place to add your tweaks. so, you could simply reuse my sakit and just rewrite it so it doesn't gut the registry so much and adapt it to your purposes. note that doing this will make your 2003 incompatable with nlite, which relies on an unmodified setupapi file.
  24. Is the Logical Disk Manager Service running? If not make sure it's set to auto start. Weird, that you see nothing. I have never liked this Windows tool, and I use a PE recovery disk running Paragon Hard Disk Manager and other types of related tools like A43 file manager.
  25. (Jaw drops) You mean you pay a per seat cost even if you run one copy? I didn't know that. (Not that I need to, we have a copy for every person here at work). No wonder people are trying out FOSS like Open Office so much
