  1. Do all DVD-RAM cartridge-based? True. I suspect it would be the case. 30 years, maybe just a few years. =============================== Question to everyone: 1) What do you think about the following choices: - DVD with InCD or its like ?? 2) After long discussions, do you think which media is more reliable, ie DVD-RAM or DVD RW?
  2. Thanks. Does it matter what onscreen keyboards I use? Any recommendation? Is it possible for hackers to record my monitor? Other than the abovementioned, any other precautions?
  3. You are certainly not mistaken. You can even choose between FAT or UDF fileformat. Because DVD-RAM behaves like a removable drive it's much more efficient for backups. Other advantage is that DVD-RAM has error correction. The cartridge type disc is the most reliable offcourse. Outside the cartridge DVD-RAM is just as vulnerable as any DVD-/+RW. But drives that support cartridges are DVD-RAM only as far as I know. Some don't even accept disc's without cartridge. (Panasonic, my own experience) I use cartridge DVD-RAM for professional reasons for many years now. This archive needs to be accessed a lot by everybody, people carry the disc's around..... We never lost a bit! There is a second copy of every disc but that's more in case the whole building burns down or something. So if you want to make easy AND reliable archives and your drive supports it, go for DVD-RAM. What is cartridge DVD-RAM? It seems DVD-RAM have several types as well.
  4. Thanks for your reply. I wonder if there're some other preventive methods (apart from security-software-based help like Firewall/anti-keyloggers) could be done to prevent keyloggers to record our keyboard activities. How about if a user type the password via a visual keyboard (by clicking keys on the screen)? Does it help?
  5. Frankly, I haven't purchased one yet. You may recommend one which you think the best. DVD-RAM is better protected due to its extra case. What do you mean by extra case? Isn't it true that DVD RAM can be written directly without doing anything? I assume DVD RAM is like a large-sized floppy disc. DVD RW can be formatted as a "floppy disc" by Nero etc. But as far as I knwo, this technique is not reliable.
  6. How to protect ourselves against keyloggers (or anything similar)? Hey. Apart from the obvious method of installing a anti-virus OR anti-keylogger program, what lese could we do to stop keyloggers (or anything similar) from stealing our important data/passwords etc. ? Thank you. Gouki: Title edited. Rules.
  7. DVD-RAM vs DVD RW Hi. I'm not sure which one I should choose. I need a disc which store my regular backup and item collection. The contents of the disc will be updated, say, quarterly or monthly. The disc must be reliable and can keep the contents intact. Q: 1) Which disc suits my need best? Any advice? 2) How reliable is DVD-RAM and DVD+/-RW? 3) What brand/model of DVD disc do you recommend? Thank you. B)
  8. Go to the Gigabyte site and check it out @gdogg: Systemfiles would be the best, for the SWAP-file it would be better if you just trow in more RAM in the motherboard sockets. (Bâshrat the Sneaky is saying the same with other words ) {deleted}
  9. Sorry, what's Iram?
  10. Thanks! But I would like to hear word-of-mouth recommendations instead of just a list. Do you have anything to recommend personally, and why? Thank you!
  11. Any good reminder application to remind a forgetful person Previously I used to use VirtuaReminder. But the reminders keep missing recently for no reason, so I have to switch to another application. Does anyone know if there's a good reminder application? It doesn't matter if I need to pay for the application as long as it's good! My criteria: - when the reminder is triggerred, I can choose among "sound", "pop-up", "falshing", and a combination. I prefer "sound + pop-up" personlly - the reminder can be triggered in the following ways: -- when the computer starts -- at a regular time (eg once per month) -- at more than 1 time period (eg triggered on 3rd Mar, 15th Apr, 25th Apr!) - when it is triggered, have the ability to postpone the reminder (eg tell the reminder to re-trigger 30mins later) - It has to trigger reminder correctly (I tried some applications previously which are faulty - eg if I log-on my computer at 5:00pm. There're 2 reminders at 2:00pm & 3:00pm. It only triggerred one) - have the ability to copy reminders - have the ability to import/export the reminder database Thank you!
  12. Thanks for your replies!
  13. Good Clipboard Application Hi. I'm looking for a clipboard application which can satisfy my needs: - contain clipboard history, ie record every (recent) text I have copied - can save custom text strings (so I can paste them later easily) - can manage/sort text strings (eg sort alphabetically/category, can use folders to contain different types of strings) - have variables (eg %todaydate% = the date of today) - It doesn't matter if it is shareware Thank you!
  14. How to select a good DVD writer Hi. I would like to buy a DVD writer. 1) I have not many ideas how to pick a DVD writer. When selecting a DVD writer, what aspects/specifications do I need to focus on? Do you have any criteria when selecting your DVD writer? By the way, this is my temporary criteria: - support DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW; DVD+/-R (DL), DVD+/-RW (DL) - stable (or longer warranty period) - can read most discs correctly, even the lower-quality discs (eg data burnt on poor-quality discs, or discs burnt by poor CD/DVD writers) - the noise factor is unimportant (unless it is too loud) Info about my computer: - my motherboard is A7N8X-X, only support up to 2*UDMA 133 - I have 2 HDDs and 1 CD-RW currently. I think the DVD-writer will replace the CD-RW. - I use my DVD writers mainly for reading videos/audios, burning DVDs for videos/audios, and for file storage & data backups. 2) Which brand or model will you suggest me buying? And **most importantly**, why? 3) About DVD write types and writing speed: .. a) For the write types, as far as I know, there are CAV, CLV, ZCLV, PCAV [any more?]. Are these factors important when choosing a DVD writer? Which one should I prefer? .. B) For writing speed, I'm not sure if speed is important. Even if they support very high speed, is it unwise to burn at that high speed since it also increase the chance to spoil the DVD? If so, what's the point of getting a very-high-speed DVD writer? I'd just use the lower speed to burn a safe DVD. What do you think? 4) Maybe it's a stupid question. But is it true all DVD-writers can read CD and VCD (Video CD)? And is it true all DVD-writers support at least: - CD-R - CD-RW - DVD+/-R - DVD+/-RW ?? 5) Better DVD media Apart from dual-layer DVD, is there any better DVD media in the market now? If so, what are they? How good are they? Should I buy a DVD writer which support these DVD media too? Why? Thanks so much for your answer.

  16. Need HELP!! Mozilla 1.7.11 becomes really crazy... >_< Hi. After I have upgraded to Mozilla 1.7.11, I have problems loading websites once in a while. The occurrence is not specific, rather it is somewhat random. Some of my problems: - it is frequently unable to display forums correctly (eg icons missing, "reply" / "edit" button missing). I may need to reload several times to solve the problems. Annoying! - images cannot be laoded once in a while. When I try to reload the pages, some of the non-displayed images can be loaded. However some of the displayed images are not loaded. Annoying! Note: I have clicked "enable to load all images" in "Tools | Options | Privacy and Settings | Images". - I cannot load 1 specific website: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ In the past, I am able to load this forum properly. When I access to any sub-pages of this forum, there's a possiiblity that the (layout of) the page is not displayed. Instead it displays the source codes. Eg: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html dir="ltr" lang="en"> <head> <title>Wilders Security Forums - Help me please!</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" /> <meta name="generator" content="vBulletin 3.0.6" /> <meta name="keywords" content="Security, forum, bbs, discussion, bulletin board,Firewall, antivirus, privacy" /> <meta name="description" content="This is a Computer Security discussion forum." /> <!-- CSS Stylesheet --> ... {snip} It drives me crazy. Does anyone have similar problems? Does anyone know how to solve or workaround it? If the situation prevails, I may need to force myself to use IE again.
  17. Cannot double-click REG or VBS etc. scripts Hi. I cannot double-click REG or VBS etc. scripts to open/execute them. I tried the following but in vain: - go to "folder | folder options | 'file type' tab" REG etc. have assigned to the right EXE to open them. REG = registry editor VBE / VBS = MS Win-based script host - transfer 'file type' settings from a good computer to my problematic ones It didn't work. Does anyone know what's wrong? And how to do?
  18. How to prevent from Javascript redirects? Hi. I have problems passing the following test: http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSe...d-test.asp It uses Javascript to redirect me. I fail no matter I use IE or Mozilla Suite. Does anyone know what I can do to prevent this short of disabling javascript? Thanks
  19. Compatibility issues among different security products You know, conflicts and incompatibility are something which can be hidden but hampening our operating system. So if you have understandings on security products, would you mind answering me the following questions: Will the following situaitions create possible conflicts and incompatibility (no matter noticeable or not): Two or more running anti-virus(AV) programs Two or more running anti-trojans(AT) programs Two or more running anti-keylogger(AK) programs Two or more running firewall Two or more running Anti-spyware(AS) programs (real-time enabled) Two or more running intrusion prevention programs (eg ProcessGuard, Viguard, System Safety Monitor) Tell me generally why if possible. Now it's going to be more complex. Will this following combination create possible conflicts and incompatibility (no matter noticeable or not): - combination of AV, AT &/or AK programs - combination of AV & AS (both real-time protection on) - combination of the above 2 Tell me generally why if possible. Thanks so much for your help.
  20. I also suppose it should be true. Unfortunately it is not the whole story. SP2 Firewall nor SP1 Firewall is preferable. If you don't wish to spend money, how about some freebie like ZoneAlarm Free. In one of the firewall test, SP2 Firewall nor SP1 Firewall score no mark at all. Read this: http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.htm After reading this post, I start to realise the importance of grabbing a "real" firewall to replace that "crappy" firewalls.
  21. CounterSpy... Detect 2 more spyware than others?!? Hi. I have downloaded CounterSpy as a trial test since it is said it can detect the newest and dangerous keylogger (Srv.SSA-KeyLogger). Having a full scan, I didn't find this dangerous keylogger ( ). Instead it managed to find 2 insidious spyware. 1) AB System Spy File Name & Location: C:\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSBin\ijl15.dll C:\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 University\TSBin\ijl15.dll Size: 344 KB 2) Ace Password Sniffer 1.1 File Name & Location: C:\Program Files\WinPcap\NetMonInstaller.exe C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\npf.sys Size (in ascending order): - 06.50 KB - 84.00 KB - 32.10 KB At first sight, CounterSpy looked great. It detected 2 more spyware which others like MS Anti-spyware and ZoneAlarm couldn't. However think twice, it seemed to be false positives/claims. I need confirmation. Can anyone confirm if they are spyware? Or does anyone know how to confirm
  22. Rulesets available for Firewall Hi. I'm currently using ZoneAlarm 6. (I may decide to change firewalls if deem appropriate) Recently I would like to set rulesets since it further increases the security. However I'm a newbie and I don't know how to make rulesets properly. 1) Are there any common rulesets available for downloads, and also has the function to apply easily to that firewall by a few clicks? If so, which firewall? Where can I download the rulesets? 2) If the above answer is negative, are there any common rulesets available, so I can manually configure my firewall properly? I am interested most on rulesets for ZoneAlarm. If it is not available, so any other good firewalls do you recommend as a replacement? And their related websites which have rulesets info? [Note: I don't prefer auto rule setting by the program since they may misconfigure and even lower the secuirty!!] Thanks.
  23. Burning DVD, Booktype, Error checking program [v2] 1) I wonder if I should use a DVD- or DVD-RW in the following situations. Eg: I burn a film or music. Is it necessary I need to close a CD/DVD before it can be read by a DVD standalone player? 2) How about if I clone a CD/DVD, is it necessary I have to close the CD/DVD? 3) What does a booktype do? It seems it is used to change the the disc type. But what's the point of it? And if I change the disc type to either DVD-ROM / DVD-R, will this close the VD as well? 4) Is there any program which can check whether the burnt CD/DVD is REALLY error-free, or burnt properly? I once experienced the burning program said the CD was burnt successfully. In fact it couldn't be read by others. 5) Is there any program which can check whether files (in my computer) is error-free or readable or uncorrupted? [v2] 6) Which types of DVD should I buy, plus or minus? Why? I will burn the DVD and be read by both DVD standalone and computer DVD drive. I will also format the DVD as UDF which can be accessed as if it were a floppy disk. Thanks.
  24. DVD-writer - how to choose (ver 2) Hi. It's my first time to buy a DVD writer. 1) What do I need to know/notice when choosing a good DVD writer? (eg what aspects/specifications do I need to focus on) 2) I know there're 5 DVD format all together (ie DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM). In fact, what's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW? And does anyone think DVD-RAM is useful? Should I try to find a DVD-write which can read all DVD formats? 3) Maybe it's a stupid question. a) But is it true all DVD-writers can read CD and VCD (Video CD)? (ver2) *NEW* And is it true all DVD-writers support at least DVD+/-R, and DVD+/-RW? 4) Which brand or model will you suggest me buying? And why? I would like the DVD-writer: - stable (or longer warranty period) - can read most discs correctly (and even lower-quality discs) PS: I don't know, but some DVD-players (stand-alone, not for computers) have problems reading some discs while the discs is not corrupt or naytihng similar and can be read by others. - writing speed doesn't need to be too high (since I repfer to write discs at lower speed) - the noise factor is unimportant (unless it is too loud) Info about my computer: - my motherboard is A7N8X-X, only support up to 2*UDMA 133 - I have 2 HDDs and 1 CD-RW currently. I think the DVD-writer will replace the CD-RW. - I don't use any firmware - I use my DVD writers mainly for reading videos/audios, burning DVDs for videos/audios, and for file storage & data backups. [ver 2] *NEW* 5) Dual/double layer writing tech I've heard about double-layer writables. What is it? What does it do? What benefits does it provide? How expensive will a DVD writers be if I wish to have such technology? Can a normal DVD player (standalone, not computer) read this DVD written by this tech? [ver 2] *NEW* 6) Region-code As to region-code, I have a DVD-reader on my mobile computer. It's strange that I can set the region codes for 4 times only. I can never change it afterward (even if I reformat my computer). So if there's any way that I can eliminate the DVD-region trouble, or have a DVD writer which can read/write all DVDs with any region codes. It would be perfect. Thanks for your help.
