  1. Looks great. I'll check it out later. Thanks for your suggestion.
  2. Thanks for your suggestion. But I can't see how it can solve my problems. It appears it doesn't offer a way to select to monitor only parts of the page. It has an advert filer but it is not just the adverts that needs to be filtered. Other elements like web statistics and non-related layout changes will still trigger the alert. The main content is what I'm interested, not the rest of the layout.
  3. Webpage Update Notification -- An advanced checker to notify changes occurred between visit I would like to have a program which can keep track of different webpage. When the pages change, there is an alert/popup which will notify me. It is useful to track changes like new replies in particular boards, site news, version update news etc. However the problem is a single unrelated change in a page would trigger the notification. For example, a random ad in the forum which will always trigger the alert. I wonder if the check can be more advanced. For example: alert only when the selected part of the webpage is updated decide the threshold on how many changes are needed to trigger the alert (helpful to prevent small unrelated changes from mis-triggering) Do you have any program you can recommend? I can pay for the program as long as it is powerful and suit my needs.
  4. Yes, I'm looking for it in download.com too However I am worried how accurate the software is. Can it compare correctly and accurately? PS: By the way, I have found a software called Compare It!, whose author is cheating at download.com ! All user reviews rate this software as 5 stars, except 2 (which is 4). A closer examination of more than 50% of the reviewers reveal that they share something in common. All reviews are probably fake.
  5. Something like this is okay: http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.htm It has a table which compares features of different products. At least I would like to see some info (no need to be perfect) like this. Sure the info can't be specifically made which is seriously in favour of one product (like the comparison list in the author website). Some degree of bias are acceptable. I did the same thing too for myself. I tried different products and made a comparison table. It is surprised why no software review magazine will at least try to do something like this. They only put up some subjective/personal reviews most of the time. I prefer something factual, and I will take of the parts that subjectivity is required (eg the interface)
  6. Access / Excel / Powerpoint Compare & Merge Tool Do you know if there is any tool(s) which can compare & merge the following: Access / Excel / Powerpoint Regarding Excel, the tool must be able to at least compare and merge: - cell contents/formulas - cell structures & positions - cell formattings I have encountered some tools which can compare the cell contents only. I would like find any differences from 2 versions of files and make them identical. Thank you.
  7. Indexing CD/DVD files and contents Does anyone know if there is any software which can index external sources (filenames and contents)?? External sources many include CDs/DVDs/USB/external drives. For example, I have many data in CDs/DVDs/USB drives. It makes it hard for me to find contents on different CD/DVDs. I would like to create a content database which will record: - filenames of *ALL* file types - contents of some specific file types - after the indexing, the search should be as fast as search done by Google - feature-rich Do you know which software can do it? By the way, does the software you recommend index/update database fast? Thanks.
  8. Software Reviews, Comparisons & Tests Does anyone know whether there is any good software review sites which will try to do the following: - compare among different software (eg make a feature table, so I can see the similarities & differences easily) - perform tests and publish the results (eg test how good different defraggers defrag a computer) Thank you.
  9. How can I do that? Is there any step-by-step guide available?
  10. Here are some options: cwRsync - http://www.itefix.no/cwrsync/ xxcopy - http://www.xxcopy.com/ robocopy - Win 2003 Resource Kit - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en I hope this helps, -John Thank you.
  11. Have you tried it? What's your comment? Is it really that good? How well does it perform each task?
  12. If I boot on the first OS, am I able to see files on second OS?If possible, could I access/read/modify/delete files on second OS? How can I hide other OS partitions? Possible since nearly all viruses are targeting at Windows. What about Windows with different versions? PS: I don't understand why I can't delete the initial (first) quote (which is redundant). :/
  13. Batch Rename, Synchronization File/Folder Rename What tools are good at doing complex renaming tasks for multiple files? Synchronization a. How can I compare and update files/folders on the same computer? b. What if I need to compare and update files/folders on different computers? c. How can I keep files in two locations in synchronization all the time? Thank you.
  14. Desktop search Several questions: 1) Is it safe to use desktop search? How about the privacy issue? I would not like to send or upload any data to the search engine server in order to use that service. The search engine and indexing files must reside in my computer. 2) Requirements of desktop search: - The search engine and indexing files must reside in my computer - it has to be reputable (so I know the company will not spy or steal my data) - it can index ALL file type (not just documents/audio/video, but like EXE, PIF, SCR, JAR) Any good desktop search? Thank you.
  15. Infection and Operating System Let's say I have installed 2 operating systems on 2 different partitions. If the virus infect my computer when I boot in the first operating system, can it infect my second operating system as well? And why? Does it matter what operating systems I installed (eg Win XP vs 98, Win XP vs XP, Win XP vs Linux)? Thank you.
  16. I don't understand you're wording there. It's meant to provide info for you to use when deciding which anti-virus is best for you, even though as I already said above which where the two best (on demand, and proactive). Can it be installed as on-demand only, that is the portion of "real-time detection" will not be installed (to avoid possible conflicts)? Sometimes simply turning the real-time detection off doesn't work. It still get conflicts. So we have to make sure this portion is not installed at all. An example of on-demand scanner: http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--...ee-Edition.html
  17. Yes, but they don't offer on-demand only scanner for installation ,isn't it? So we can't use them as a backup of the main resident anti-virus program.
  18. On-demand Scanner Guide Introduction Some people may want to install more than 1 anti-virus program because no single anti-virus program can detect all viruses. A good combination of anti-virus programs can enhance overall detection rates. It's not a good idea to install additional anti-virus programs, even if you have disabled its real-time protection. They may still cause conflicts (eg loaded driver conflicts). However a few anti-virus porgrams allow you to select what modules to install. Simply install the module of on-demand scan (don't install real-time on-access protection) The producer will take care of the rest, and you are fine. Some anti-virus producers also offer standalone on-demand scanners for user to downlaod and install. they are also great to backup your on-access real-time (resident) anti-virus programs. More protection, very low risks of conflicts. List of standalone on-demand scanners Here's a list of on-demand scanners for you to install in your computer: Standalone installer: * Bitdefender 8 http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--...ee-Edition.html (good detection rate, scan and cure, free) * MicroWorld eScan http://www.mwti.net/products/mwav/mwav.asp (use KAV engine, good detection rate, but scan only, free) * ArcaMicroScan http://www.arcabit.com/download_product.ht...t=ArcaMicroScan (above-average detection rate, scan and cure, free) * Dr. Web http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en (above-average detection rate, scan and cure, free) * McAfee AVERT Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ (watered-down version, limited malware database, not useful; scan and cure, free) * ClamAV, ClamWin, ClamWin Portable (so-so detection rate, currently this anti-virus program has on-demand scan only, freeware & open source) ** http://www.clamwin.com/ ** http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable * Any more to add? Installer with module selection: * Avira Antivir http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html (good detection rate, but may have many false positives, free for personal use) * Command AntiVirus http://www.authentium.com/support/updates.asp (shareware) * Any more to add? PS: What combination of anti-virus programs do you think is the best and enough to protect you against known and unknown threats? Standalone on-demand scanner(st) VS online scanner(onl) Both will occupy your disk space anyway st: scan faster st: more flexible (configuration, scan options) st: more handy (can scan right on the spot) st: most of them offer both scan and cure/removal; onl: few offer both scan and cure/removal. Most are scan only st: very low chance of getting conflicts; onl: probably slightly lower than "st" st: hardly use more than 1 scan engine; onl: some websites offer scanning individual files with multiple engines Any more to add? st = Standalone on-demand scanner onl = online scanner PS: Ouch! My comparison looks like too biased. More inputs are welcome. ;D
  19. Does it really do all I want? Have room chatting? How to present live presentation?
  20. Hi. How can I hold an online meeting/presentation with some 10 to 50 people? Each person can talk with each other by text or audio. One can publish its screen online (while doing its presentation), so other members can watch at the same screen at their own computer. They can listen to what the presenter says. Do you know if there is/are any (combination of) software which can achieve this? If it can't be done by freeware, then tell me any shareware. Thanks a lot.
  21. Thanks for your small tips. ... Hi, ophiel! Welcome here.
  22. DVD-RAM formatting & usage issues Hi. I'm using LiteOn SHM-165P6S. I have purchased a Maxell 5X 4.7GB DVD-RAM. I have problems about how to burn this disc. 1) a) I realised there're at least 3 formats I could format my disc, ie UDF 1.5, UDF 2.0 & FAT32. Does anyone know what're their differences, pros & cons (or do you know any article which discuss about this)? As far as I know, it seems UDF is superior to FAT32. I see no real benefits about FAT32 unless you are lazy. Speed improvement in UDF, support over a 2GB file. What's the point of getting FAT32? I must have missed something. And how about UDF 1.5 and 2.0? Common sense should say 2.0 is better than 1.5, but is it true in fact? I just know UDF 2.0 is for videos. but does it mean UDF 2.0 is just for videos, nothing more? Or UDF 2.0 is for everything, especially videos? Anyway, which one should I choose? B) What do I need to install, in order to format my disc in UDF format? I realise there's a Panasonic driver which can format UDF. But does anyone if I can install it for my LiteOn SHM-165P6S? If so, where can I get this driver? Apart from the above method, is there any other alternative I can consider? 2) OK, after I've formatted my disc, do I simply drag and drop to burn, or else? 3) Is it okay to utilize all the 4.7GB space? Or should I need to keep some free space for some reasons? If so, why? Thanks for your help.
  23. Also won't work if the keylogger doesn't log keys in-order, but just hooks editboxes and retrieves their contents. A few of them do this. However, it's still a little extra security at little cost. So a visual keyboard is a solution to "Delprat & LLXX problems", right? No one has any idea what visual keyboard should I use?
  24. What DVD-RAM are you using? Any recommendation? B) Do I need to do anything else before I can drag-and-drop data from/to DVD-RAM (eg format the DVD-RAM)?
