  7. I've had that problem before but it wasn't a 2003 server problem. All the times that happend it turned out to be a variation from the blaster worm. Run the patch AND the removal tool that should clear it up. You will prob also notice your control panel Icons are all positioned to the right. Minus Human
  8. Hello Again. This might sound like a simple question but what would be the benefits to placing my Primary DNS (Internet) in a DMZ zone as opposed to leaving it behind the current firewall or unprotected. I was asked this today “why do you want to secure DNS – It’s just DNS what can they do to it” Thanks your advice will be greatly appreciated
  9. I have to say that could come in very useful I’ll def look into that. Do you have the computer Accounts inside your OU? If so check that AD DNS server is specified on the PC's. I would think that the most likely reason is that they are located in the user container in AD as apposed to an OU. Would it not be possible to ask the SysAdmin to link your policy to the OU that contains your users?? I’m sure if you give him a fact for fact explanation he MIGHT come around. OR you could ask him what he suggests (Personally it makes sense to have the users you manage inside your OU just from an administration point of view.) Minus Human
  10. Phyridean, creating groups and placing them within the OU where the GPO is linked will not work. The user accounts need to be located inside the OU. If you need to grant permissions on objects you could then use the groups for that. If moving the user Accounts to your OU is not possible create your GPO and link that to the OU where the users accounts sits. Inside that OU create a Group making the required members part of the Group and then grant - Read and Apply Group Policy right to the Group on your policy. Only those users will then be managed by your Policy. Remeber GPO can only be linked to OU's not Groups or user Accounts. Place all items inside the OU that you would like to manage. Hope that Helps Minus Human
  11. Hello, Ok from what i understand you have the OU representing the Child domain now as opposed to having a child domain of the root domain. is this correct ?? No, you have to have the users in your OU for the Group Policy to Take effect. Minus Human
  12. Thanks Guys. we have 2 servers on the network for DNS - internal to serve all our internal clients and external. as u prob guessed the internal forward any request to the external for www queries. Minus Human
  13. Hiya You could try using profiles. create a kind of default profile located on a network share dump all you want into it and point the users account details to get the profile from your new profile located on the network share. Just thinking about it now it could be that youre system policy hides your icons on the desktop.which could be why some are visible and some not. the pc's that have the icon located on the desktop are the policy settings enforced correctly ? if not that's prob the cause. Are u using Active Directory to enforce your Policy settings ? If so point the problem PC to a DNS server belonging to your AD Domain. Minus Human
  14. It's not really such a big issue. You could reinstall the licenses and set licencing to issue per device as apposed to per user. if your using terminals in a lab this would prob be your best bet. I wouldn't recommend using per user as every user that logs in will need a CAL and seeing as you only have 50 that's a problem. youre prob thinking about now "well what if it issues a TEMP licence" if youre using terminals there should be an option to request CAL on logon or something to that effect. ( depending of course what terminals youre using -- if your using terminals--) Because it's such a small number of CAL's I would fire them up and make sure all licences got issued as it should. IF you need to come in remote TSL will issue a TEMP licence Minus Human
  15. C'mon guys surely there's someone who can give some usefull information. Minus Human
  16. Hello Everyone I need to setup external DNS for our university as a test moving our current DNS from NT4 to 2003. If all goes well the 2003 box will replace NT4. I'm not that familiar with the relationship between External DNS and internal DNS and would appreciate if someone could give some "best practices" and how these 2 work together as well as some info on setting this up. I’ve been looking for documentation all over the net to clear up this issue but I haven't been able to find anything solid yet. From what I’ve been able to gather some recommend that your external DNS be outside your Firewall (in our case Border manager) others not because it's Microsoft DNS, are there any advantages for having it outside the firewall as opposed to behind? Thank You Minus Human
