  1. Thanks but no thanks - these icon have 256 colors, while the Windows 2000 like 16 colors for the GUI elements only. Also, the icons need to be sorted by this size order: 32x32 10x10 14x14 12x12 16x16 22x22 And I wish I was kidding about it. Can you do that and keep them in the 16 colors I have them in?
  2. Yea, that it is! msgina.dll contain the bitmap displayed during Windows starting and user logging in, as well, as shutting/restarting PC! Great! This one: Only slight complication is, that the 413x72 pixels image (Bitmap 101) is NOT used during user logon, so, to avoid the ughly dafault Windows image flicking on screen during that, it is also necessary to replace the Bitmap 107 - this time 413x88 pixels in size. Worked like a charm, uncompressed BMP 256 color images and ResourceHacker and there we go! Sadly, there is no way to capture even the Ctrl - Alt - Del screen to show how much nicely it looks with girl image, hehe I picked this one: ...but, of course, anyone is free to use any image he/she see fit Now back to the cursed start button icon thing. Anyone know icon edit program that allow me create such special icon?
  3. Guys, one day I tought it will be cool to be able to change the start menu icon. So, I went and look, where and in what file the icon is. I soon find a guide about this - but for Windows XP. http://www.aspfree.com/c/a/BrainDump/Chang...rt-Button-Icon/ Usually, XP and W2k are the same, so I go with it and look and yes - in the explorer.exe file, there are first bitmap and that is exactly the same as the bitmap on the start menu! So I thought "Voila!", changed the bitmap, reboot... and hell! No change?! WTF! So I went to the String Table and changed the tooltip message when mouse is above the start button and rebooted. Wow, this time a change happens, so, these texts are working, but bitmap must be taken from elsewhere... For the interesed people, to change the "Start" text on the start button to anything else, visit explorer.exe, String Table and item 37. In item 34 are the tooltip message and so on... Now I futher studied and searched and I found that the icon for the start button is taken on Windows 2000 from user32.dll, where it is stored as 5th out of SIX different 16 color icons sizes. They are sorted this way: 32x32 10x10 14x14 12x12 16x16 22x22 Now to replace them with the wanted icons one need to create a *.ico file with SIX icons inside and that is not all! They has to be sorted exactly the way they are above! That is a serious problem, because most icon making software refuse to create *.ico file with more that ONE icon (and that kill all the resources 1-6, leaving only resource 1 and possibly a huge problems, because resource 5 (16x16) is used and when it does not exist, well... bad things probably happens. So ATM I'm a bit stuck there. Anyone can help me out? The linux penguin litttle icons are there: http://ax2.php5.cz/linux_look_icons.zip If someone can make a icon out of them, well, I would gladly test it! So, I failed at this, but stuck into another funny mod. The icon that reside in the top right corner of every Windows window when exploring my computer drives and stuff are located at browseui.dll file with THERE size variants. For my classic view, a 22x902 pixels big 256 colors bitmape are used. And editing the top 22x22 pix big "rame" one can change the bitmap, so a custom image in the right up corner is possible. Look: Funny, huh? Probably there is also possibility to save memory when replacing the big, huge, long bitmaps with the animated stuff with one pixel custom frames Gotta test that idea Sizes are 22x902, 26x1066 and 38x1558 - 22, 30 and 63kBy in size. Another thing that makes me wonder, tough, are where the bitmap for the login/logout window is. You know, the Windows 2000 Professional logo that you also see upon pressing Ctrl - Alt - Del. At first I thought it might be in the shell32.dll, but the image there is is NOT it: ...and there is NOT anything like the wanted bitmap in the ntoskrnl.exe anyway. Winlogon.exe did not have any bitmap as well, so, where to look for THIS particular one, guys? Anyone know?
  4. I played Doom3 just fine on my Win2k w/o any problems. Perheps your GFX card drivers are up to blame? You need a proper OpenGL/OpenAL support and I got it on nVidia (5700 Ultra to 6800GT/6800GS - all worked rather well) ...
  5. Yea, tell that to the millions of people of there Honestly - most used is the Windows platform, no matter the cost, so one got to live with it. The IE is removed already pretty well, tough I'm not yet satisfacted. That's all
  6. Yep, anything I enter there looks like are for the places only. That suxx... What version of Windows 2000 are you running, so you get the Documents there, even not in desired position? Infos about registry modifications of the places bar are there: http://www.auxtools.com/placesbar.html [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar] "Place0"=dword:00000011; My Computer "Place1"=dword:00000005; My Documents "Place2"="D:\Music" "Place3"="C:\Sites" "Place4"="C:\Temp" (for paths it is string (REG_SZ) and you must enter full path, of couse) Sadly, that is now what I want... any help?
  7. cluberti - Thanks, cluberti! Now we are getting somewhere So you say that someone tried that and it actually break only the remote logins to my machine? That sounds rather great! I did not want anyone to be able login to my machine, so as long as filesharing works and using terminal I could login to another server/folding machines, I would be very happy! Bonus - added security! That call for hacking the exe So, are you aware if anyone tried that ever before me and if yes, are there some known set of hexa codes that, replaced with another set, will prevent winlogon.exe loading the wininet.dll and did not complain about it? JustinStacey - yes, while I do agree that for most, Fred Vorck work is more that enought, it is not for me. I want to press harder. I want these ughly cache files are GONE for good. And hacking windows is not only fun, it add knowledge and security along the way, so... I just wanna try harder. Why not? That is what anyone should have done to get completely rid of IE
  8. First - I did not mean to say that I dismis your suggestion entierly, but please, look. I come too long way and - after all - what is the worst it can happen when I use modified winlogon.exe? Problems? I put original version back and that it is. Windows fail to boot? I restore them from backup. So, you see, there is a little reasons why not, when you have backup of system partition (DriveImage) and you are ready to face possible catastrophic consequences. And since I hate these files, I see plenty of reasons why modify the winlogon.exe file. After all, it is not the annoying file that keep showing the ughly lame requester about Windows not using virtual memory, when it is disabed? Time to modify that too I looked at the wininet.dll too, it has a REGINST section as well, but reather tiny one: [Version] Signature="$CHICAGO$" [Reg.HKCU] RequiredEngine=SETUPAPI, %EngineErrorMsg% AddReg= [UnReg.HKCU] RequiredEngine=SETUPAPI, %EngineErrorMsg% DelReg= [Reg.HKLM] RequiredEngine=SETUPAPI, %EngineErrorMsg% AddReg= [UnReg.HKLM] RequiredEngine=SETUPAPI, %EngineErrorMsg% DelReg= [Strings] PATH_AUTODIAL = "System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock\Autodial" PATH_INTERNET_SETTINGS = "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" Registres at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings are full of a VERY interesting settings like cache for Active X and so on. A little clean-up there would be right in order, I assume. That does not help changing the winlogon.exe, tough PS. editing the settings in the registers C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\Cache\Paths did not stick. I changed them and reboot was slow and upon restart - the very same setting appeared. There is, for example, the very interesting setting "Directory" witch is string "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5" - exactly what I wanted to kill. I searched whole Windows for Content.IE5 and found it in wininet.dll and IEINFO5.OCX - should not THIS file be long gone anyway? Well, back to the issue - in wininet.dll aren't tj "Content.IE5" found in the REGINST part. So, where it is?
  9. Bottom line - it does NOT help or prevent, however, the re-creation of Cookies (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Cookies\index.dat) History (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat) IE temp files (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat) What is colored as red, I want to be dead! So, guys, a little help there? What next to trully murder IE? I did used the "kill IE" inf I made from Fred Vorck work there once again I boted with all the modified DLL: http://rapidshare.com/files/294279201/kill_IE_inf_files.zip But no help. Files are still re-created on reboot. ****. Kill them with FIRE!
  10. I do wonder, if it is possible to add custom paths there: I would like to have a link to Documents right up there. I looked inside of the comdlg32.dll and looking in ResHacker at the dialogs 1547 and 1552. It make me wonder, where the list of the paths come in. I wonder if the list of the devices or paths aren't the WS_SYSMENU and from that it might get striped down to WS_CHILD - witch are these things (okay, paths) that display in the end. I saw no way to modify that, tough. Perhaps someone enlighten me and direct me to the proper DLL to edit/change/tweak? PS: I find this by Google: http://www.liutilities.com/products/regist...y/tweaks/10668/ But I don't know it it works with the places disabled (TweakUI) on the requester. Maybe it should, but I don't know. Also I desperately missing an example how to specify EXACTLY the path. Perhaps something like: %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\ Would be the best bet, but trying things like: <C:> or <D:\Documents> Does not work. Help? Quotation is fine, but do these <> should stay?
  11. Well, I was asking if anyone tried that (removing the REGINST sections of the BROWSEUI.DLL and SHDOCVW.DLL and editing out everyrhing besides zone settings from URLMON.DLL) and if Windows works, after that. No answer, so, I backed up my installation and tried that. Entierly removing the REGINST sections from BROWSEUI.DLL and SHDOCVW.DLL - no ill effec! WoW! Now URLMON.DLL - and wow, things went smooth! I typing now, eMule and ICQ (Miranda) run also well, so, we see. So far, so good. Anything to test?
  12. Well, the install is a bit "beaten up" already, but you are right. Backup first, who knows what happen when the REGINST sections of the browseui.dll and shdocvw.dll are gone I did not find any zone informations into these two DLLs (browseui.dll, shdocvw.dll), but I could be wrong. Witch is why I asked... In the urlmon.dll seems to be plenty of zone informations, so I was just interesed if I could delete everything besides the mentioned keys... It is possible to delete everything beside these keys? I wonder... Editing the DLLs aren't a issue for me, I did not update my system at all, SP4 Win2k install and that it is.
  13. In the IE removal guide: http://www.vorck.com/windows/2ksp5.html Fred Vorck says: "To truly murder IE, you will need to make changes to the REGINST sections of the following files: BROWSEUI.DLL SHDOCVW.DLL URLMON.DLL The changes you need to make are all in the REGINST sections. Make the changes with a program like Resource Hacker and "fix" the file afterward by correcting it's checksum... REGINST sections of some of these DLLs will undo what you do to the INF files, no matter what. Fortunately, these sections CAN be edited with Resource Hacker (use semicolons right on top of the "H" in HKEY)... Do not make edits to any LocalZone data. If you did, you would be unable to copy or move files!" This is, for me, average user, a very unspecific guide about what to do. There are a BUNCH of settings and I having hard time to figure out where to start I hoping that this put a stop to the Content.IE5 directory and others for IE, including the history one. I'm right? Also I did not just want a put semicolons there, I just want to delete everything that is not necessary. From the there mentioned DLLs above, only urlmon.dll seems (to me and at first look) contain some Zone settings. Keys like: [Zones.RegCU] [ZoneMap.RegCU] [Zones.RegLM] [TemplatePolicies.RegLM] [ZoneMap.RegLM] [uATokens.RegLM] [strings] ...probably should not be deleted, even some keys like "HKLM,"%PATH_TEMPOL_LOW%","1201",0x10001,0x1 ; initialize and script activex controls not marked as safe" did not exactly looks like I need them, considering ActiveX is completely killed on my machine... So, what will happen if I just delete all in the REGINST sections of the browseui.dll and shdocvw.dll ...? Is this the right way, or I better backup my Windows install?
  14. I would just use DriveImage and backup the Windows partition to second D partition of the main HDD. Easy to do over the net in terminal, DriveImage run in widnows, configure, reboot, backup, reboot and here you go - the file is where you tell it to be. Burn on CD/DVD and system partition is backed and no external HDD is required. Very cheap way. However this way has also limits, like you cannot backup big partition to small, there has to be space for the backup file, etc, etc, etc. But you cannot beat the price
  15. Guys, one of my friends want play Backgammon - yep, the Microsoft Backgammon on his PC. However the PC is very slow (Sempron 1500MHz) and to make the Windows run fast the games his son want, I decided to use the most light and fast SP - SP1.0a. Bad move for Backgammon. IIRC this game is a part of SP2 and copy the files from Backgammon directory from another Win XP SP2 Czech does not make the game working. Anyone know, if there is a M$ compatible (talking about the network play) Backgammon? Or is there a way to make it working under SP 1.0a, so the well-working OS could stay and just the Backgammon run? Or anyone know, if this http://www.bkgm.com/gnu/AllAboutGNU.html is compatible with the M$ Backgammon, network play speaking? I do believe that even Vista users will find this infomation very inteersting, as Backgammon was stripped from Vista, much to dismay of many... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums...b2-4ade65c8d819 Anyone know more?
  16. I'm sure this looks like a great idea. However I prefer do things "by hand" as I like FAT32 system for OS partition for speed reasons, so... So I tried to take a look how a script file can be used, but ended up in total dismay. First, this middle line looks messed up pretty bad: REM ECHO>>HFNOLOAD.SED s/syspro_mp = hal.dll/syspro_mp = hal.dll,,noload/g REM ECHO>>HFNOLOAD.SED s/mps_up = halapic.dll,,noload ,2,hal.dll/mps_up = halapic.dll ,2,hal.dll/g REM DO NOT LOAD SCSI MINIPORT DRIVERS Second - the major annoyance is the SED tool itself. It suxx beyond words to describe. I was hoped for something like... SED --in-place -f noload.sed txtsetup.sif or SED -i -f noload.sed txtsetup.sif ...witch, according to the docs should perform the noload.sed script upon the unsuspecting and naked txtsetup.sif file. But it does not work at all. I probably can't read documentation at all, or something like it. Nevermind, I have to done everything by hand again. Sigh.
  17. Oh, sorry! My register trick played tricks on myself also So it is okay for these to be in the root dir? Good then. Replacing them by hand is possible and preffered by you? So I do it as well. WFP is disabled by hacked SFC.dll + 4k big SFCfiles.dll as well, so, there should be no problemo. Also the setupapi.dll is hacked, so I did not expect any problems. I try to burn the install and install it fresh on testing PC and report back then And yes, many of these files are NONSTANDARD and nonexistant in Windows 2000, so, they are not exactly "replaced". These that don't get replaced might not even work - eg. not end where they should be, unless I specify to copy them in (witch file?)...? Is that where you thoughts are aiming for?
  18. Good point. Not only VMWare could suffer badly from that, also Deamon tools, used to simulate a CD from file on HDD will likely cease to work. Bad idea, okay. Now if I just figure the HJSPLIT out and I burn the result on first testing CD and test install Windows modified by that way There are my problems, lol, almost fixed now: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=130611
  19. Now I still have one question. The files I put in the REPLACE dir are into the root directory of the CD - eg. directly in the SOURCESS result dir. Is that normal? Should I keep them there and burn the whole SOUCRESS into a bootable CD? With these files in ROOT of the CD? Is not better manually replace them in the i386 dir?
  20. First error is this: FINDSTR: Nelze otevřít SOURCE\I386\PRODSPEC.INI FINDSTR: Nelze otevřít SOURCE\I386\PRODSPEC.INI HFSLIP was unable to determine the language of your source OS. As a result, some updates such as the Windows Update Agent cannot be slipstreamed properly. Then: All hotfixes integrated into a folder called SOURCESS. Remember to reboot your machine after installing from the SOURCESS folder. HFSLIP run time: 1m33s But it is a lie, SOURCESS directory in the root of my D drive did not even exist! So, let me repeat what I did: 1) copy whole Win2k SP4 CD into the SOURCE directory, i386 dir including, of course 2) copy bdant.cab and dxnt.cab into HFCABS for DirectX 9.0c 3) place wmfdist.exe into the HF dir for WMV9/10 codecs 4) copy these files into the REPLACE dir: comctl32.oc_ comdlg32.dl_ comdlg32.oc_ desk.cp_ fsutil.ex_ gdiplus.dl_ libeay32.dl_ libssl32.dl_ mfc71.dl_ mpeg2dmx.ax_ msadds32.ax_ mscomctl.oc_ mscoree.dl_ msvcp60.dl_ msvcp71.dl_ msvcr70.dl_ msvcr71.dl_ msvcr90.dl_ msvcrtd.dl_ mswinsck.oc_ notepad.ex_ notepad.in_ NTDETECT.COM ntldr ntoskrnl.ex_ ping.ex_ powercfg.ex_ quartz.dl_ sfc.dl_ sfcfiles.dl_ shell32.dl_ sysinfo.oc_ sysoc.in_ tabctl32.oc_ 5) prepare the HFTOOLS dir, using these files: bbie.exe cmdow.exe EXTRACT.EXE mkisofs.exe modifyPE.exe 6) fit registry fixed I use into the HFSVCPACK directory, files are named 1.reg to 7.reg 7) other directories are empty 8) hack the setupapi.dll, fix it's CRC and fix the CRC of the sfc.dll file, and replace the originals back in the SOURCE dir, compressing them as they was, of course as described there: http://www.vorck.com/windows/2ksp5.html 9) run HJSLIP for the second time... WOW, it works now! After few minutes of thinking I realize what it was - my way of protecting the batch files to run on my computer kicked in It is a great way to protect himself from harm, but one have to ocassionally disable this )) ;CMD path set - make batch files not working, unless manually started!!! [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor] "Autorun"="CD /d D:\\" !!!
  21. I remember that HFSLIP helped me to integrate DX9.0c easily into Windows - just put the bdant.cab and dxnt.cab into the HFCABS folder and that it is! Copy the whole Windows CD into the SOURCE directory and run HFSLIP again and find the result into the SOURCESS directory... Well, I run it on already integrated Win2k SP4 Czech install, because I see little point gathering the Service pack file and depacking (W2KSP4.EXE -x) it and using the Update.exe -s to update the contents of the i386 dir, when I already did that before and have just stored the unmodified Windows 2000 SP4 Czech on CD. When run, HFSLIP complained about missing or/and unable to open LNG.TXT ... No idea where to get this file. A line before that was PRODSPEC.INI and some failure about identification, well, PRODSPEC.INI contents are: ; ;Upozornění pro uživatele: NEZMĚŇTE ANI NESMAŽTE TENTO SOUBOR. ; [SMS Inventory Identification] Version=1.0 [Product Specification] Product=Windows 2000 Professional Version=5.0 Localization=Czech ServicePackNumber=0 BitVersion=40 [Version] DriverVer=03/08/2000,5.00.2195.1 After that is says that all was intergrated into the sourcess and: Remember to reboot your machine after installing from the SOURCESS folder. FINDSTR: Nelze otevřít AMPME.TXT FINDSTR: Nelze otevřít TTEST.TXT FINDSTR: Nelze otevřít TTEST.TXT FINDSTR: Nelze otevřít TTEST.TXT Interesting. Directory SOURCESS is nonexisting anyway.
  22. Indeed, thanks a lot. I starting to study your files as well, as others and looks like there is plenty to discover. As far as the empty lines removal question go - I did not aiming with that to speed up the install. I aiming for more relable TXTSETUP.SIF file, that it is. When reading it, I stumbled upon a ForceScsi = 1 option in the [setupData] I think that changing it to 0 will result with the same as adding the ,noload to every scsi devices in a much more elegant way. Maybe?
  23. Yes, the 3rd link is fantastic, however I do have MANY questions there and I hope somebody can wise me up Thanks a LOT for the links
  24. Whoa! Editing the TXTSETUP.SIF file looks like it can get the install go on way faster, because one can really disable the many unnecessary stuff there. I have few questions, tough. First at all - then the TXTSETUP.SIF file are excessive number of empty lines. Must they have been preserved? I dubt that, but I better ask first Second, there is could of things that I want to know what they are and if I can ",noload" them. The SCSI stuff is self-explainatory (tough I have still one minor question, will the Deamon tools work then to emulate CDroms? Because it work as emulating them as being the SCSI ones...) but how about this? [busExtenders.Load] pcmcia = pcmcia.sys If I did not have any PCMCIA slot on my machine and on most PCs, I should ",noload" it, right? [files.i8042] i8042prt.sys,4 What is this? [files.sermouse] sermouse.sys,4 Is that a support for serial mouse, eg. mouse connected to COM port? [scsiClass.Load] cdrom = cdrom.sys disk = disk.sys floppy = sfloppy.sys,,noload ramdisk = ramdisk.sys SCSI floppy is already disabled, disabling the disk if not having any SCSI card will be good too, right? And disabling the cdrom only when I never need the Deamon tools to emulate one, right? And the ramdisk is what? SCSI ramdisk? Is that really necessary to have? [inputDevicesSupport.Load] serial = serial.sys serenum = serenum.sys Is not that again the serial mouse? [files.ohci1394] ohci1394.sys,4 1394bus.sys,4 The 1394 bus is already disabled above (ohci1394 = ohci1394.sys,,noload) - but will it be good to disable loading this files also? [files.sbp2port] sbp2port.sys,4 What is this? Soundblater port or what the...?! [files.lbrtfdc] lbrtfdc.sys,4 I have no idea what is this either. [files.vga] vga.sys,4 framebuf.dll,2 vga.dll,2 vga256.dll,2 vga64k.dll,2 Do are all those VGA files really necessary? Aren't the vga.dll, vga256.dll and vga64.dll just same versions of the file for different VGa capable cards and witch one is used on normal modern hardware? Then the rest could be discarded? Anyone can help me out?
  25. Well, the question is not if I'm paranoid, but if I'm paranoid enough. Certainly I don't trying to be funny, I tried that once with the SM bootscreen and you did not like it Anyway, dunno how things go in your part of the world, but there is M$ pushing hard to push users into the whole Vista scam by various ways. One of them is threatening users of Windows in news, that their Win systems can be easily compromised and that M$ is currently hunting BIG hacker that compomised - unless you have Vista with latest updates See there: http://www.novinky.cz/internet-a-pc/software/161342-.html (15 millions of PC infected, even military PC infected in France and UK and blah blah blah 250 000$ a head price for that great hacker guy, blah blah blah blah) And soon they followed it with "hacker striking back" there: http://www.novinky.cz/internet-a-pc/software/162493-.html (hacker is striking back, new version of Conficker B++, blah blah blah you are not safe unless you have Vista with latest updates, blah blah blah) (new in Czech, use Google translator to get to the point) Now every Winblows are in danger, blah blah blah blah... If you just listen for a while to this nonsense, you get the feeling that they want YOU to upgrade on their nonfunctional-DRM-crippled system right away. Call me paranoid or just laugh - like I care I never ever used any updates and I never ever got any virus. HW firewall rules
