  1. I created an ISO backup of my Dell Win7 Home Premium install disc, and would like to install it from a USB key if possible.
  2. Solved! There was some kind of serial bus conflict with the FireWire card. Removing that fixed everything.
  3. Just did a clean install of Windows 2000 on a friend's virus-infected computer, and everything was going fine until I installed VistaPack 2.6, now Explorer is frequently crashing -- "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows" (the installer for Moraff's Morejongg gives me this error as well). I decided maybe it wasn't the best idea to install VistaPack so I told it to restore everything and uninstall. Oddly enough after a restart, all the Vista goodies were back even though it had supposedly restored everything and removed itself.
  4. Someone hired me to fix a computer that won't connect to the internet via dialup. I came to their house and was immediately able to connect. The computer froze at one point when I was plugging something in, and I decided to check that the cards were seated tight. After restarting, the computer didn't like the modem and refused to accept the driver it had been using. Eventually I gave up and installed a different modem and successfully connected to the internet once. I had to re-install Win2K because this thing was incredibly slow and infected with the W32.Sality.Q-1 virus. Every time I try to connect, I get a 678 or 721 error. Oddly enough, the CPU is constantly at 100% for some strange reason, even after a clean install with all drivers loaded, and I think the hard drive is going bad because it took several hours to install Win2K. Could there be any correlation between these issues? I'm at my wit's end with this hunk of junk!
  5. I'm looking for recommendations for a good free (and preferably open-source) tabbed file manager for Windows similar to Nautilus or at least some good add-ons for Windows Explorer. I've used QtTabBar, but I seem to run into weird problems with .NET so I'd rather find something else.
  6. I'm helping someone get connected to the internet via dialup without using the PeoplePC software. I created a DUN connection for PeoplePC, but this still begs the question of how to use the web accelerator without that obnoxious program.
  7. I'm looking to purchase a new flash drive. I've seen some really cheap (under $35) Cruzer Micro 16GB drives on eBay and other sites, but how legit are these amazing bargains? I would hate to waste money on a fake drive or cheap knockoff that can't read/write as fast or something.
  8. I've been recommending AVG for the past 2 years, but I'm getting annoyed with the more recent versions that sneakily set Yahoo as the default search engine for browsers (or at least Firefox). I'd really like to turn people onto something open source like ClamWin, but I'm not sure how it compares to more popular freeware anti-virus software as far as monitoring for malicious activity and whatnot.
  9. TestDisk is alright if you're running a Unix-based system and have no other options as far as freeware goes. However, if you're running Windows, Recuva is excellent!
  10. You might see if FreeDOS has a clone of scandisk with this feature. I'm not sure if you can download the individual programs from the site (you might have to get the disc image and dig around or just use Google), but I like their chkdsk program more than the Microsoft version (not sure if their chkdsk only supports NTFS like the M$ version).
  11. There is no legal way to obtain the CAB files aside from buying a Windows ME disc and copying them off. You might have found them on RapidShare or some torrent site but this isn't legal (not that Micro$oft cares that much about Windows ME).

I wonder if Copy Handler can do this?
  13. Windows can blue screen for a number of reasons, so for best results you need to tell us which error you're getting. If it's an "unmountable boot volume" error, you might be able to fix it by booting from a FreeDOS CD and running CHKDSK.
  14. Sorry about that. I thought it would be better to have a different topic title, because this problem has more to do with the Photo Printing Wizard than GDI+.
  15. My friend is having some problems with a fairly clean install (a few months ago) of Windows XP Home. When he tries to print an image from Explorer with the photo printing wizard, it gets as far as letting him choose a printer but crashes when he presses the "next" button. I created a memory dump if anyone can decipher it for me. PID_3316__EXPLORER.EXE__Date_05_06_2009__Time_19_55_08PM.log.zip
  16. Created a memory dump and attached report. PID_3316__EXPLORER.EXE__Date_05_06_2009__Time_19_55_08PM.log.zip
  17. I updated my BIOS to (beta) version 1807 today. I'm using an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.4GHz - the FSB is 1333 MHz, so maybe I should think about overclocking?
  18. TinyXP works, so I'm going to guess a slipstreamed copy of WinXP will work as well. The only problem is if the installer doesn't offer to reformat the partition as NTFS, because for some reason these Macs can't boot Windows off a FAT32 partition.
  19. Edit the boot.ini file - not sure which one, as there will be three of them...I'm assuming they're all on separate partitions?
  20. Well she finally realized the power of Hibernate, so it's less of a problem now (at least until Windows wants to restart).
  21. Hmmm...I take it nobody knows of any such little utility?
  22. Yeah! That's exactly what I was looking for!
  23. I believe it's in C:\Windows\System32
  24. My friend is having some problems with a fairly clean install (about a month or two ago) of Windows XP Home. When he tries to print an image from Explorer with the photo printing wizard, it crashes. The details showed that the problem was with gdiplus.dll so I tried to re-register it (regsvr32 gdiplus.dll) but got errors. I think it might have something to do with the Microsoft .NET Framework since that stopped working recently for no discernible reason.
