Could be a bad drive, or maybe a cable came unplugged. Try putting it in an enclosure and connecting it to another computer, to see if it finds it. Also, listen for any strange ticking noises.
I tried the boot trace command, but got an error message explaining the xbootmgr usage. I copied the it from that page, so it can't be a typo (not on my end anyway). I enabled boot log and OS boot information with the System Configuration utility. It loads all of the *.SYS files, but the hard drive activity light goes off and it hangs indefinitely at what I'm guessing is called the OS Boot Information screen:
I noticed that in Windows Vista, when one tries to copy/move a folder, there is an option to "merge all" instead of "replace all", and I'm wondering if it's possible to tweak Windows XP into doing this.
If you can't copy files larger than 4 GB, your flash drive is probably formatted as FAT32. The NTFS filesystem is supposed to support files as large as 16 EiB.
There is probably no way to trick Microsoft Word into opening your HTML files as plain text. Word processors aren't really designed for code editing. You're better off switching to Notepad or a program specifically designed for code editing - I recommend Notepad++ or Editra.
Safe Mode works good, but I don't think it's a startup program since it's hanging at the black screen with the green progress bar and "Microsoft Corporation" at the bottom. It seems when a system hangs at that point, it's usually a system file that isn't loading.
Thanks for the sites, guys. Oddly enough, my "channel ID" (012) isn't listed on any of them. Does the Product ID change when one installs Service Pack 3?
My friend's laptop frequently hangs at startup, and she has to run Startup Repair (often several times) before it will boot. I don't think Startup Repair helps at all, as it reports no problems, and the system will sometimes boot after a hard shut-off.
I'm working on a Dell Inspiron 530 running Vista that seems to be having driver problems with a 6TO4 Adapter and something called isatap.{0D3E1A84-B7EA-40C6-AEEB-F45B0343A860}.
I know it's safe for the English version, but I think I had to reinstall KernelEx after upgrading to SP 3.0. It should be added to SP 3.0 (probably as an optional component, until it really matures).
I've seen a few computers exhibit this problem. Toolbars, buttons and various objects that are supposed to be shiny are white. Creating a new user account seems to fix the problem, but then I am faced with the issue of migrating program data and settings (which isn't always completely successful). I have a few screenshots if the description isn't enough.
Wikipedia tells me that NTFS-3G uses FUSE. In any case, it would be nice to have something seamless and not some wonky, separate Explorer-like program to get the job done.
I've recently discovered that 7-Zip can open some .EXE and .MSI files, as well as write new data to the contents (you have to select the "Open as archive" option in the Explorer context menu).
I'm pretty sure I've seen this happen with Windows XP as well, but I've seen several Vista boxes that try to dial out when already connected via ethernet (can't remember if I've tested with wireless, but I imagine it wouldn't make a difference).
I'm fixing a computer for someone and I noticed that My Documents launches on startup for both uses. I ran MSConfig and CCleaner, but the only startup items are AVG, MirrorFolder and Webshots.
