http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-re...tall-vista.html Have you followed such instructions? If you can locate the file on the HD? Either at %windir%\$NtUninstallKB890859$ or (and this should be an original) %windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386 or here %windir%\Driver Cache\i386 You may be able to copy over an uncorrupted one.

http://www.itpro.co.uk/blogs/maryb/2008/08...ing-the-monkey/ This happened before with Java mid last year. Uninstall Java and reinstall lates version (all free) AND change to Firefox as your browser and dump IE Also run Secunia, a free online check. It will tell you if you have older version(s) of Java installed and point to where this can be fixed http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ The above link is an online scan. As you are a newbie, you may like to consider installing the PSI that will monitor these problems directly on your computer. It is the second Tab near the top on the secunia page. Download and install it. Kotuku

Nah stick with a single partition. You will end up getting stuck with too little on the smaller partition and be up for changing partition size somewhere down the track. ALso, as the partitions are all on the same HD you will not see any speed increase Use the Backup facility in your Business version and buy a 100 Mb HD to attach via USB to do incremental and full backups to that drive You probably have a hidden partition there already with a Factory Image on it? Quick Google search shows: >> It turns out it was only divx AVI files that I had a problem with. Fixed by downloading the codec here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/The_Codecs.htm You might also try the other free codecs available here: http://www.free-codecs.com >> However, just blindly installing a bunch of Codecs can screw your system up Read the write up here http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_avi.cfm In particular the 'Elegant Way sub-heading' Kotuku

If the Hotfix will not install, with the error message you got, that means it is already on your machine. You sound like you know what you are doing, so I assume all computers have the same Workgroup name? Vista uses a different default to what XP does. Generally the Vista machine will only allow the Public folders to be seen and shared by others in the workgroup and you first have to turn that on in the Network setup screen. Failing that, it will be a firewall setting preventing this? Have you been to the Chicony web site for updated drivers? Kotuku

The name of the .exe file is?? The you can do a Google for it. It is possible the OEM supplier wants to be able to boot your machine using the .wim file, but as, again, you haven't given a full name.... http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/socal/archi...ed-locally.aspx

Usually the set-up will give you a choice of whether you want a Desktop shortcut, during the install procedure. If it doesn't, you can sometimes find the shortcuts already in place in the final directory. But I think you are right, many newer games are not doing this (Farcry2 for example)

Are you running Comodo Firewall? If so, you will need to uninstall it to correct this problem and then research it on the Comodo page and I think you need to run it in training mode if you decide to re-install. If that is not your problem, then suspect a virus/Trojan/nasty and use one of the Hijack This forums Happy New Year Kotuku http://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3/is_cc...l-t29974.0.html and maybe http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid...5336&page=1

Is your AntiVirus doing a Memory scan at boot? Check the settings for that. Check Performance Logs and the Event Viewer to see what is said against the time stamp of start-up Kotuku

http://warnerchad.blogspot.com/2008/08/sli...-into-your.html Just to make sure you have done it correctly. According to this, having made the Slipstreamed SP1 disk, you use that to install Vista SP1.

If he was 'smart' enough to decide on a BIOS update, did he make a copy (saved to HD) of the old BIOS? If so, you can revert back to the status quo with that. Failing that, go to the Website of the MoBo and try to get the one you had before and re-flash the BIOS. Otherwise, all your new BIOS settings are availabe by hitting (usually) DELETE and going into SETUP Kotuku

What Problem? Perhaps if you had quoted the original problem, we could have helped? Kotuku

Well certainly some of the early Nero v7.x versions were NOT Vista compatible. But I am not sure upgrading to v8 will solve your ripping problem, unless you pin it down to definitely Nero at fault. Take out anything to do with Nero in the msconfig start page or better use Windows Defender to stop anything Nero loading. If it works, the Nero 7 is at fault. Can you rip the DVD to the HD quickly using Clone DVD2?

Surely you had WINMAIL in the install of Vosta? Kotuku

Do you have the latest drivers both firmware and software for your Optical drives? Are you running AnyDVD in the tray and the latest version of that? Is there any other Burning software (Nero? Lightscribe?) taking partial control of the optical drive. In particular Nero early versions (<7.0) were not Vista compatible Frenchy

It sounds like you have logged in as a new or guest user. When you click the Orb, is your usual user name at the top of the menu on the right? If not logout and log back in as the correct user. If for some reason that is not available, then use system restore to go back to before this instance.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 Download this (your version will show further down the page x86 or x64). Run the file and it takes quite a while to complete its check and it may download some missing files or repair some damaged ones. Try the 958644 again after that, again disabling any Anti Virus stuff. NOTE, there are many reports of AVG interfering with this patch, so if you are using any AVG go to their web site and get the fix first Kotuku

OK, I had same problem and solved it yesterday with some help from the MS.public.windowsupdates Newsgroup. This is what worked for me. Temporarily disable any AV or firewall (that is not the Vista Firewall) and make sure Vista Firewall is active Exit any other programs you can from the right hand Tray Install the KB958644 Update (I assume this is the one you are talking about??). My user profile didn't load at the restart, but after a second reboot this did and all OK. I assume you have got your machine running OK by using a system restore in safe mode to get back to before the Update was installed? If the above didn't work go into msconfig and disable all the non-microsoft start-up programs and then try again the above. Good luck and report back so others can use your experience Kotuku

The Lite version will be the Free version that came originally with the machine (my guess) and that will work OK with Vista and I suspect all you need. The other version is liable to be the full retail, version and will ask you to pay for it after a short while. If your needs are for a full version of Nero, then I believe there is a v8.xx out, so buy that.

Go to the UK HP Web site (before you do the re-install) and put your Model number in and then download what drivers you are missing. If you have an internet connection while you are doing the Install, Vista will go and find most drivers (certainly enough to get started) and you can then install specific MoBo drivers etc. afterwards. Don't have any peripherals like printers, cameras etc plugged in for the new install, do them one at a time when all is running OK.

Have you tried turning off the Dream Scene before the Rip? With only 2 Gb memory, the Dream Scene can be a huge memory hog. What about cleaning out the TEMP file, you may have a bunch of stuff left over there. Does your Pioneer DVD have the latest Firmware? And yes, it could be the Optical Drive on the way out, I have seen a few of these dud on new machines (not specifically Pioneer ones)

You appear to have the BSOD turned off and just an Auto start on error. Turn on the BSOD and you will then be able to record the numbers and hopefully the filer causing the crash
-
Are you using the latest Search (I think v4) this should have been offered via Auto updates a few weeks back. It works fine and better and faster than previous.
-
Umm, not really a vista problem, have you been to the RPG Maker XP and seen if they have a Vista update? It maybe your Firewall preventing the connection to get the serial number, but I doubt that, but you can turn it off, via Control Panel/SECURITY and see.

Vista not reading External Drive Files on 1st attempt
Kotuku replied to Galgalay's topic in Windows Vista
You haven't said what version of Office you have? Assuming Office 2007, then after you open a blank Word page, click the Orb at the top left and click on WORD OPTIONS at the bottom of the drop down menu and check Active X and other security items that may prevent opening. What happens if you right click and select OPEN on a Word File in the Mini? You may have a double click problem. Right click any word file in the Mini and select PROPERTIES and check the permissions Kotuku
