  1. Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing Virtual PC? It should be pretty straight forward. I use Virtual PC and VMware successfully all the time depending on client needs. Both work well for basic testing.
  2. The root cause seems to be DNS. I'm surprised AD let you join another ADC to the domain without DNS working correctly. I would focus your efforts on insuring that DNS is setup correctly. There are tons of white papers from MS, try http://www.microsoft.com/dns, and on the NET explaining how to set DNS up correctly. As for forcibly removing the server if it can't see AD, you could just down the server. Go to your ADC that is working and remove it from Users and Computers, and Sites and Services.
  3. Try copying the icon to Default Users instead of All Users
  4. You could also try doing a custom build of IE with the IEAK. It will allow you to create/import all the favorites you want and incorporate them into your build. Works well, I have used it in the past. tguy
  5. Or you could create the WINNT.SIF and copy it to a floppy. Then insert the floppy as your CD loads: Setup is inspecting your computer.... You can remove the floppy when computer reboots for the first time during the installation process.
  6. GPO's are not really the way to go about doing what you are trying to do. I would suggest installing the ISA server portion of SBS and using ISA to filter out websites you don't want people to visit.
  7. Copy it to a floppy disk, insert the floppy as your CD starts to load: Setup is inspecting your computer.... You can remove the floppy at the first reboot during the build process.
  8. You can run the .VBS script from the RunOnceEx key in the registry. See http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/runonceex.htm
  9. Try Advisor from Belarc Software. You can download the home version for free.
  10. Try installing IE 6 SP1 using the cmdlines.txt file as the launch method. Worked for me on both VMware and physical servers.
  11. You can use Setupmgr.exe in the Deployment tools, deploy.cab, to create an unattended answer file called WINNT.SIF. Copy the WINNT.SIF to a floppy disk and use it when you start your server build. In the [userData] section of the WINNT.SIF add a line that says: ProductKey=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx Replacing the x's with your product key.
  12. You could also try running virus specific removal tools like Stinger from McAfee and the Sasser worm removal tool from Symantec.
  13. Visual Basic Application programming and Macro's sound like the way you should be going. There are several good books from MS and articles on the Net about these topics.
  14. Run pebuilder.exe and follow the GUI wizard it will build the .ISO for you. From there you can use Nero to create your CD. I did basically the same thing as you and had a working CD in 30 minutes. Good luck.
  15. See this site: http://unattended.msfn.org/ To me it sounds like you were using XP SP2 boot disks to install XP SP1 from CD. Your XP SP1 cd may not be bootable which is why you got the error stating you should remove media from the drives. Follow the guide at the above site and you will be up and running in no time.
  16. Anyone know how to lockdown access to Windows services and processes on XP Home SP2? I don't want my kids being able to disable NetNanny and Chat Monitoring software and services by stopping the service or killing the process in Task Manager. Any help is greatly appreciated. tguy EDIT: I can't believe with the incredible wealth of knowledge the members of this forum have that noone could find an answer to this question. After a great deal of research I found a tool called, xp_secconsole.exe, reminded me of the Poledit.exe from Win9x and NT, that allows you to remove access to the Taskbar, My Computer, Run command, etc. on a per user/profile basis. We'll see if this does the trick.
  17. Have you considered using another Internet Browser like Firefox or Mozilla to access the Internet. It appears that Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are very tightly integrated. Disabling a feature in one, say IE, often disables the feature in the other. Thanks MS.
  18. Here are some things to try: 1) Make sure your CAT5 cable is a crossover cable if the machines are connected directly to each other. 2) Go to the Advanced Properties of your TCP/IP protocol and on the WINS tab, select 'Enable Netbios over TCP/IP', save changes 3) Create a host entry in the C:\Windows or Winnt\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file with the name and ip address of the computers you are networking together. Save the changes. Good luck.
  19. Try reinstalling IE through Control Panel to see if everything registers correctly again.
  20. Can you use Ghost Explorer to remove the sysprep.inf file from the image and then try it again to see if the problems go away?
  21. Try Alt-Shift-F4
  22. The mail store size is dynamic, so your backups will only require the amount of space currently be used by the Exchange database files.
  23. When you started your upgrade did you choose to upgrade the files in your original path, C:\WINNT or to a different path like C:\WINDOWS. If you chose a different path simply log on to the computer with the source CD and delete the new directory. You could also try looking for: $WIN_NT$.~BT - the boot folder $WIN_NT$.~LS - installation files folder and delete them.
  24. You could also add it to the end of your batch file.
  25. Does it really say duplicate user? Or does the message say something like: 'The computer name already exists'? If the computer name already exists, check and see if there is another VM with the same name as the one you are trying to build. Rename one of the two VM's to another name and see if your error goes away.
