  1. TwoJ...Thanks for the reply, but Outlook 2007 is on a second computer. I am having no luck Exporting the messages from the old compter. I am using the export / import wizard, etc. and on Windows mail, it does go through the process of exporting all the email folders, but I have no idea where they are being exported to. It never asks me to insert a floppy or a flash drive to export the messages to. Now, I have copied the email folders (the old way) to a flash drive, however when i try the IMPORT feature on Outlook 2007, it never asks me where to look.
  2. I am not having much luck transferring / copying my email messages from one computer (Windows Mail, in Vista) to (Outlook 2007, Windows 7). So I am doing it the old fashioned way I used several times in the past. I located all the email locations in Windows Explorer etc which was usually Mike / Appl. Data / Local / microsoft / Windows mail / local folders. There I would see Inbox / Outbox, Sent, Deleted, Drafts, etc. I would then copy all those folders to a floppy, and then find the appropriate place on the new computer, and just copy all those folders to the new computer, and wa la. All the old folders including all the email messages were now on my new computer. I have all the folders copied on a floppy, but where is the correct place in Windows Explorer to copy them ??? Thanks, Mike
  3. I would have mentioned it, if I knew what was happening. Thanks for the link. I will try that Bitlocker method to fix the problem. It seems the easiest
  4. Info. Update---I noticed that the restore point remains after I shut down the computer AND start up Vista again. However, if I shut down the computer, and start XP which I have on the second hard drive, and then shut down and reboot to Vista, the restore point is gone, and I get the message that NO restore points have been set up on this computer. Does this help to analyze the problem. Thanks, Mike
  5. Over 60 Gig of free space.
  6. System Restore is not working in Vista. I tried to set it up several time. I manually set up a restore point and it stays for the day. but it is gone the next day. When I go there, it tells me there are no restore points set up on this computer. Shouldn't it also by default, be stting up restore points every so often ?? Thanks, Mike
  7. I installed Vista on a second hard drive, now when I put a Video in the DVD player I get the following message "WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER CANNOT PLAY THIS DVD BECAUSE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO TURN ON ANALOG COPY PROTECTION ON THE OUTPUT DISPLAY. TRY INSTALLING AN UPDATED DRIVER FOR YOUR VIDEO CARD" . Somehow I got another program called VLC Media Player installed, and that program DOES open and play the DVD, so there should not be a problem with the video card. Any help on getting WMP to open and play the DVD ? Many thanks, Mike
  8. Thanks everyone for your replies. After I load the OS, and then the drivers that came with the computer from another disc, I probably only have about two hours work remaining. I really did not want to GHOST the drive, because I wanted to change the partition size that I had on the first HDD. I will probably be able to do everything one evening after work without having to switch the cables back and forth like I was asking about, but I just wanted to be sure that I could, if I wanted to.
  9. The hard drive in my P4 computer with XP Pro. is dying. I received an exact HDD replacement. This is my plan of attack. Bolt in the new HDD. Move the IDE and power cables to the new HDD. Install the OS system and all drivers on the new HDD. Move the IDE and power cables "back" to the old HDD so I can use the computer for the rest of the night. When I get time, move the IDE and power cables back to the new HDD, and install more of my programs etc. Move the IDE and power cables back to the old HDD so I can use the computer again. Question----will I mess up anything in the BIOS etc. by switching these cables back and forth ? I guess the easiest way would be to just SLAVE the old HDD and drag and drop the files I wanted to the new HDD. But can I do what I planned above, or will I mess up something ? Many thanks !!
  10. Thanks everone for your replies. I will install an EXHAUST fan in the rear of the computer. The front of the computer is all plastic, and there is no easy place to install a fan that would pull any air. This Pentium 4 computer 2.4 gig processor came without any fans except for the one on the power supply and the one on the processor. Since I am not into GAMING etc. (just surfing)I assume that just the additional back fan is sufficient. Both sides of the computer are vented. Thanks again, Mike
  11. I am planning to install a fan at the back of my computer. Should it Intake or Exhaust ? Thanks !
  12. If the jumpers are not set properly, could this cause the squeel once in a while. The computer was originally telling me that the HDD was only a 34 gig and it was supposed to be a 40 gig. I tried all the diagrams from the Samsung site with no luck. The company I bought the computer from told me to jumper it a different way that did not match any of the diagrams from the Samsung website. It turned out that I did not properly partition the HDD. and there was another 6 gig of unpartitioned space. The computer now displays the full 40 gig etc, but I still have it jumpered like that guy told me. I am pretty sure the jumpering has nothing to do with the squeel, but I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks again !!
  13. MSNwar, I painted white lines on the belt and instructed the mice to stay in their own lanes or I was going to feed them to the imaginary cat that I do not have !!!
  14. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. MSNwar--I downloaded that www.passmark.com program and it reported "NO ERRORS" I guess I will keep an eye, or ear on it to see if it gets louder in the next few weeks. I do plan to backup everything, just in case. Have a Happy Holiday everyone. Mike
  15. Every now and then I can hear a faint high pitched whine or squeel from my Samsung SP4002H hard drive, which lasts about one second. This only happens when the HDD is basically "NOT" doing anything like searching or defragging etc. Is this slight noise OK, or is it the first sign of failure. if so, what are the next signs, longer squeels, louder etc ??? The computer is only about 3 weeks old, and I was wondering if I should be concerned, or if this faint whine is normal to some types of hard drives. Thanks for your opinions.
  16. Because Norton 2003 AV was causing my floppy to grind every time it looked at the floppy, I had to uninstall Norton. I then loaded Pc-Cillin 2002 that came on a disc with the computer. It also contains a firewall. What are the opinions on this Antivirus, is it decent or not. I am an cable internet and also using a Linksys BEFSR41 router. My opereating system is XP Pro on a Pentium 4 computer. Thanks for all opinions.
  17. Thanks everyone for your opinions. It seems like the Linksys won by a landslide. Mike
  18. I am upgrading to cable internet shortly, and since there are two computers in the house I will need a router. Best Buy and Circuit City are advertising the Siemens Speedstream 2-port router #ss2602 for $44.99, the Siemens Speedstream 4-port router #ss2604 for $59.99, and also the Linksys 4-port router #Befsr41 for $69.99 after rebate. I am leaning toward the Siemens 2-port for #44.99 since I only have two computers, although I have read many positive comments concerning the Linksys. Opinons please-is the Linksys worth the extra money, or are the two of equal quality ? Many thanks, Mike
  19. I am currently using Call Wave to hear when I get a outside call. It works great, is free, but I get a lot of junk with it. If I run that Ad Ware that is supposed to get rid of spyware etc. will Call Wave still work ? Thanks, Mike
  20. Hi Drew, My friend wants to know if it is even safe to go into that Windows UPDATE site. I know that when I go into it, it examines what is on my computer, and then it knows what updates I may be interested in downloading. He knows that he will not be able to download that SP1 when it is available, but can he even go into that site safely ? Thanks, Mike
  21. My friend is running the Corporate XP Pro. He knows that he should NOT download the SP1 when it is available, but he is wondering if it would be safe to go into the Windows Update site, to see if there is any other patches, security items etc. that he may want to download. What should I tell him ? Thanks, Mike
  22. Drew, It worked. I no longer see the old picture, only the new Background that I chose. Many thanks, Mike
  23. When I purchased my old computer last year, I downloaded a picture from the internet and set it as my Background for the desktop. I plan on selling the computer, so I went into Display, and changed the Background to Windows Me. When the computer starts up, I still see the old picture for a few seconds. It eventually shows the Windows Me Background, but how can I stop it from showing the old picture for a few seconds at bootup and also shutdown. The computer is running Windows Me obviously. Thanks, Mike
  24. Hi Blackwar, I understood that part . I just was not sure when I was supposed to plug in the scanner, or if I could reboot the computer (as it told me to do) before changing the registry back. The scanner now works, and the computer still boots properly, so I guess I did it ok. Mike
  25. Hi, I know there are no drivers by Mustek for their 1200 ED scanner that work with Windows XP Pro. However on their site, they give info. on how to make it work. I need to edit the registry, install the Windows 2000 driver, then change the regisrty back to the way it was. My question is what is the exact sequence ? Do I edit the registry first, install the Windows 2000 driver(I already have it downloaded to my desktop), turn the computer off, plug in the scanner, turn computer back on, change registry back etc ?? What is the exact sequence please ?? Thanks, Mike
