  1. Very nice pictures ... thanks for sharing, I've never seen the Milky Way look like that.
  2. Thanks dencorso for the additional information ... I really wasn't checking for MS XP updates anymore. I had planned to maybe check every 6 or 8 months to see if anything was showing up. I really wanted to stop with update checks after the last official April update release, including that last XP update on May 1st. After I installed those last "official" updates, I then made a clean image backup to a DVD in early June ... just don't want to fool with image backups anymore, now that I seem to have a very good one. With the new free RollBack XP, everyone should be able to achieve a good XP setup and be able to keep it that way. ...
  3. Today I decided to run the IE 8 MS Update check and found these two Office 2007 updates were available for June. I only have Office 2000 installed and there have been earlier updates for Office 2007 before the last XP updates in April. I wasn't going to check for updates "every" month but I guess I will still have to run a "monthly" update check. I am surprised to still find Office 2007 updates for XP after April 2014. I manually downloaded the two updates to install later and also save. They were published on May 27, 2014 and provided with the June 10, 2014 Update release. Both updates are for: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB2878233) 06/10/2014 (6.1 MB) Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB2880513) 06/10/2014 (4.2 MB) Just a heads up that a monthly update check still seems to be required with XP. This was sort of news to me. ...
  4. Just wanted to add a few things to my first post ... it's already long enough so I will start a new one. Years ago when I was still with Windows 98SE, I bought the program Go Back to use, since there was no System Restore program with 98. It was OK but I never really liked it, it was always working (running) ... wasted my money. After I switched to XP, I used System Restore but it never seem to work for me in "crunch time" ... fortunately I was already into DVD image backups at the time, so I always had that option to completely start over clean. However, installing image backups usually takes some time to complete, not a terrible amount of time but when I came across Rollback RX and discovered that a "fresh install" only took about a minute or two, I picked up a copy. It's really good for a quick return to a former Snapshot or to the Baseline shot ... really great for trying out software or researching a problem ... over and over. It is still necessary for a good, clean image backup, since Rollback RX or Rollback XP would be useless in a hard drive failure. You probably should also have System Restore turned off ... you would no longer need it anyway ... also do a really good image backup ... clean off all useless junk and whatever you no longer need, then do a system Defrag (that's always my last step) ... make the image backup and then install Rollback XP and you can always return quickly to that point and "start over" ... I don't do very many snapshots, if at all ... I just always go back to the Baseline shot and do any updates and create a new Baseline shot, but a regular snapshot might be better then you don't mess up the original Baseline shot ... Flash, Shockwave, my Favorites List, Hosts file, Event Viewer log ... anything you want to clean or update and then make a new Baseline. Remember, do a Defrag before installing Rollback RX or Rollback XP ... you really can't do that anymore once you install Rollback, so I have read ... Rollback will do it's own Defrag automatically after so many snapshots ... four or five snapshots I think will trigger Rollback to do a Defrag. It's just important to get a good clean image backup, the way you want it or what could be called a "Factory CD" ... like I got from Packard Bell with my first computer in 1998. Then you install Rollback and get a "near perfect" image to always go back to quickly just to start fresh every so often ... if your hard drive goes bad then you have the homemade Factory CD or DVD ... I get everything on one DVD today ... used to be a CD or two with Windows 98SE. Hope this is of some help ... it can be a lot of work to get that perfect image backup, looking for junk in every "nook and cranny", cleaning the registry, then defrag the registry, then a registry backup with ERUNT, if you want to ... then the final complete Defrag. However, it's worth the effort and then you are always finished with that, unless you add more software or find stuff you missed from before or have some new settings. In June I finally achieved that perfect backup (so far) ... I thought I had done so in April and May but I found some hidden junk and logs that I had missed ... I keep a list of problems to fix for the next backup, so far I have found nothing. Of course, you will always have updates ... Flash, Shockwave ... if you want those ... SpywareBlaster, MS Money, Favorites List additions or removes and other stuff but those only take maybe 30 minutes to do. RollBack XP Now Released - Freeware Resurrects the Windows XP Operating System http://www.wfla.com/story/25783565/rollback-xp-now-released-freeware-resurrects-the-windows-xp-operating-system Monday, June 16, 2014 Horizon DataSys announces today, the official release of its' RollBack XP software. RollBack XP is offered as a freeware utility, that is designed to lockdown and secure the Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. ...
  5. I just came across information from Horizon DataSys ... the company that makes RollBack RX, a really good recovery program, not free of course. They do make Reboot Restore RX, which is free to use. The new program is for XP users only, since MS dropped the OS in April. The new program is called RollBack XP and I'm reading it's completely free. No XP User Left Behind May 21, 2014 http://www.horizondatasys.com/blog/post/2014/05/21/instant-recovery-software-for-xp.aspx ... this is the last part of the article: We thought that if we released our freeware Reboot Restore RX as a SteadyState alternative last year, then why not do the same thing for the Windows XP lockdown? Reboot Restore RX was a big success in terms of the number of downloads we got. It really helped users out who needed a quick fix with a simple restore upon reboot functionality. The community really ended up benefiting from this software, and it helped us improve our premier products, RollBack RX and Drive Vaccine as well! So, if you want to protect Windows XP on your machine and not have to upgrade to a new OS, then have no fear, RollBack XP is here! The client will be available for download from our website next week. ---------------- There is one limitation that I know off, you can only take 10 snapshots ... but that's not really a problem ... that's plenty ... if not, just go back to the Baseline backup and start over with new snapshots would probably work. http://www.horizondatasys.com/en/Windows_XP_lockdown.ihtml RollBack XP Removes the Need for Costly Industry-Wide OS Upgrades There are many data recovery software tools that are available for Windows, but there is nothing that is catered to Windows XP specifically now that there is a support lockdown for the OS. RollBack XP fixes this issue by providing a 10-snapshot, 1-baseline solution for instant recovery. It functions just like RollBack RX, but the freeware version can only take up to 10 snapshots. There will be an option to upgrade to a paid version and have an unlimited number of snapshots as well. This all makes RollBack XP an ideal recovery solution for XP. RollBack XP http://www.horizondatasys.com/en/products_and_solutions.aspx?ProductId=40 ... I have not tried it yet.
  6. Vinifera ... you bring up a good point with .NET Framework ... I only have .NET 2.0 on my setup, decided to stop there. Every so often I find a program that I would like to have on my XP setup but it requires .NET Framework, most of the time I am lucky that .NET 2 will be enough. Perhaps that could be a "problem" someday that I might need all the newer versions of .NET installed but I have no plans to ever go beyond .NET 2. I am not sure about flash player ... I don't see .NET listed as a requirement for flash player: Flash Player Requirements Microsoft® Windows * 2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor, or Intel® Atom™ 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks * Microsoft® Windows® XP (32 bit), Windows Server 2008 (32 bit), Windows Vista® (32 bit), Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit), Windows 8 (32 bit and 64 bit), or Windows Server 2012 (64 bit) * Internet Explorer 8.0 or later, Mozilla Firefox 17 or later, Google Chrome, or Opera 11 * 512MB of RAM (1GB of RAM recommended for netbooks); 128MB of graphics memory
  7. Thanks dencorso for the information concerning the new 14x version. Until you posted I had made the decision to stop with the last 13x version ... 13.0.0.214 ... everything seems to be working OK but I will put the new 14x version on my setup ... I have read for years that some people were staying with older versions because of the CPU cycles and such ... I have the last versions of 10x and 11x stored away to use with XP if I decide to go back one day. The 13x versions seemed to be working but with any newer versions ... I wasn't sure if they would still be OK with XP. I am saving the last 13x version to return to, should it become necessary one day. You and others know how to measure some of these programs with CPU usage and other criteria ... I pretty much just search around to see if others are complaining about a certain version and going back to an older version. thanks again ...
  8. Deer - Dog Playing Video link doesn't seem to work anymore ... maybe YouTube shut it off, don't know but the newspaper link seems OK. Catch Me if You Can! Energetic Pit Bull Plays Friendly Game of Chase With a Wild Deer http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2650903/Catch-Energetic-pit-bull-plays-friendly-game-chase-wild-deer.html 06 June 2014 Racing through the grass panting, a comical home video captures an energetic pit bull engaging in a game of chase with a wild deer. The nippy canine is seen at home in the garden running back-and-forth with his new racing buddy. An iron fence keeps the two unlikely competitors at a safe distance. Margaret Wray from Georgetown, Texas, captured the lively footage of her dog in action last month and says she's witnessed similar races since. In her video, the pit bull and deer sprint between two fence corner pillars for more than two minutes. Eventually the animals come to a standstill and the deer opts out of the game. ...
  9. In my earlier post I may have been wrong that FP v13.0.0.214 was the last 13x version with the 14x version being released today. I just came across a list showing the versions that were released today (June 10th) ... # (Released 6/10/2014) Flash Player 14.0.0.125 (159 MB) # (Released 6/10/2014) Flash Player 13.0.0.223 (149 MB) # (Released 6/10/2014) Flash Player 11.2.202.378 (32.03 MB) # (Released 5/13/2014) Flash Player 13.0.0.214 (149.10 MB) I admit that I am now thoroughly confused ... there is a version 13.0.0.223 that was also released today. I thought FP v14.0.0.125 was the next "new" version but I don't know why version 13.0.0.223 was also released today. Flash Player Archives http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html Extra: I just found this minutes after I posted ... I guess FP v13.0.0.223 must be ... Extended Support Release - Flash Player 13.0.0.223
  10. I see today there is a new version of flash player again ... Flash Player 14.0.0.125. I would just like to hear from others what version of flash player they are currently using with their XP setup. Have you been updating with these newer versions or have you elected to stay with an older version, say from the 10x or 11x series? I have XP with IE8 installed and my last flash player version is 13.0.0.214 which seems to be the last version of the 13x series with today's new 14x release. I have a Pentium M - 1.6 but Adobe says the system requirements are: * 2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor, or Intel® Atom™ 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks ... the whole requirement block. Microsoft® Windows® * 2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor, or Intel® Atom™ 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks * Microsoft® Windows® XP (32 bit), Windows Server 2008 (32 bit), Windows Vista® (32 bit), Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit), Windows 8 (32 bit and 64 bit), or Windows Server 2012 (64 bit) * Internet Explorer 8.0 or later, Mozilla Firefox 17 or later, Google Chrome, or Opera 11 * 512MB of RAM (1GB of RAM recommended for netbooks); 128MB of graphics memory Flash Player 13.0.0.214 seems to work OK on my setup but I am not sure how to tell if it is the best version for me to be using ... or going back to an "older" version. thanks ...
  11. Another asteroid fly-by on Sunday ... 'Beast’ Asteroid That Will Buzz By Earth Big Enough To Wipe Out A City http://tampa.cbslocal.com/2014/06/06/beast-asteroid-that-will-buzz-by-earth-big-enough-to-wipe-out-a-city/ June 6, 2014 TAMPA – “The Beast” is coming! That’s the nickname astronomers have given to an asteroid that will nearly sideswipe Earth this Sunday, reports Space.com. Near-Earth asteroid 2014 HQ124 will be a mere 777,000 miles at its closest approach to our planet, that’s just over 3 times the distance from the Earth to the moon; a close shave by cosmic standards. Observers assure us that there is no chance of a collision, but they do say this fly-by illustrates the danger of a meteor strike. 2014 HQ124 is 1,100 feet wide and is travelling about 31,000 mph, relative to Earth. If it was on a collision course, the planet’s gravity would actually increase its speed to about 40,000 mph at impact. "This one would definitely be catastrophic if it hit the Earth," asteroid impact expert Mark Boslough, of Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, said during a webcast produced by the online Slooh community observatory. "If it hit a city, it would definitely wipe out an entire metropolitan area," he added. If 2014 HQ124 is one solid piece of rock, it’ not certain what the asteroid is made of, the impact would unleash an explosion with a yield of about 2,000 megatons. "You’d end up with a crater about 3 miles across," Boslough said. "An event like that would break windows over 100 kilometers away." Astronomers reckon they’ve discovered about 95 percent of the potential "civilization-enders" near us. But they warn there are probably more than 1 million near-Earth asteroids at least 100 feet wide, and less than 1 percent of them have been discovered. ...
  12. I admit I really don't too much about the Glass device except for the fact that it seems to be a good spying device on unsuspecting people. Has anyone actually seen someone wearing one of these? I am not 100% sure but I don't think I have, as of yet. I have read that some bars and restaurants don't allow them on the premises, which I completely agree with ... I'm not crazy about someone sitting around recording everything they can see ... with all the other spying going on ... it's beyond enough. I have not heard about casinos ... they never allowed cameras in a casino but now with cell phones mostly all having cameras and now these Google Glass things ... I wonder how that is being handled, if anyone wearing the device would be allowed inside, I would think not. Anyway, a Google Glass Detector program may now exist ... there could be others. May or may not actually work ... from the article. "Oliver’s program is still a mostly-unproven demonstration, though the 40-year-old New Zealand native has successfully tested it by booting Glass off his own studio’s network. More importantly, it shows how the uneasiness with Glass’ social implications could play out as the device hits the mainstream. Bars in San Francisco and Seattle have already banned Glass-wearers. In January, a Glass-headed movie-goer was suspected of piracy and questioned by Homeland Security agents after wearing the device in a theater. And the inventor of a Glass-like augmented reality setup claimed to have been violently thrown out of a Paris McDonald’s in 2012 based on the restaurant’s no-recording policy." Cut Off Glassholes’ Wi-Fi With This Google Glass Detector http://www.wired.com/2014/06/find-and-ban-glassholes-with-this-artists-google-glass-detector/ 06.03.2014 Andy Greenberg Not a fan of Google Glass’s ability to turn ordinary humans into invisibly recording surveillance cyborgs? Now you can create your own “glasshole-free zone.” Berlin artist Julian Oliver has written a simple program called Glasshole.sh that detects any Glass device attempting to connect to a Wi-Fi network based on a unique character string that he says he’s found in the MAC addresses of Google’s augmented reality headsets. Install Oliver’s program on a Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone mini-computer and plug it into a USB network antenna, and the gadget becomes a Google Glass detector, sniffing the local network for signs of Glass users. When it detects Glass, it uses the program Aircrack-NG to impersonate the network and send a “deauthorization” command, cutting the headset’s Wi-Fi connection. It can also emit a beep to signal the Glass-wearer’s presence to anyone nearby. more at the link ...
  13. bphlpt ... again thanks for the instructions. Have saved them and will try everything out if I come across another interesting video someday. Good to know all this.
  14. Thanks bphlpt for making the "easy access" link ... I don't know a lot about posting video links. That's much better. I could have watched another 10 minutes of the reunion ... the sad part is that they endured 10 years of scarce food and water with no shelter to speak of, they just had each other to help get through those trying times. Looks like now they can spend their final years together in a much nicer place. This is from the Animal Place website ... it's good there are places like this, not all animals get so lucky. "Instead of placing the two up for adoption, Animal Place welcomed Mr. G and Jellybean as permanent residents at our 600-acre Grass Valley sanctuary. Their story will live on, inspiring and teaching visitors about nonhuman emotions." http://animalplace.org/mr-g-and-jellybean-united 5/29/2014 -The response to Mr. G and Jellybean's friendship has been phenomenal. Nearly 4 million people have viewed the video and shared it across the globe. They are international sensations! On May 28th, 2014 Mr. G and Jellybean moved up from our 60-acre Rescue Ranch adoption center to our 600-acre permanent sanctuary in Grass Valley where they will live out their lives. On a warm May day, a 10-yr old goat named Mr. G arrived to Animal Place’s Rescue Ranch adoption center. For a decade he lived with a burro on the property of a woman who could barely care for herself, let alone the dozens of dogs she hoarded and three barnyard animals. Animal Place was one of two sanctuaries offering to help the goat and burro when they were confiscated…but we could only take in the goat, and the other sanctuary could only take the burro. The two were separated in order to save their lives. We didn’t know the depth of their bond. Mr. G arrived stressed from his eight hour transport. Rescue Ranch staff allowed him his solitude. Mr. G refused to eat. He spent his days lying in a corner of his stall, barely lifting his head. Staff tried every treat – molasses, sweet grain, apples, wetting down food…nothing worked. Staff physically moved Mr. G to ensure he didn’t spend too long lying down. After health exams revealed nothing physically, it became evident Mr. G was in mourning, assuming his friend Jellybean had disappeared forever. He was inconsolable. After four days of starving himself, drastic actions were taken to help Mr. G. It was time for Jellybean to come home. It would take an additional three days but soon Mr. G and Jellybean were reunited. When Jellybean entered Mr. G’s stall, he could not believe his eyes. In fact, he did a double-take! It was only when he smelled Jellybean’s unique scent that Mr. G realized the truth – his dearest friend had returned! Mr. G erupted from his prone position, snorting and inhaling Jellybean’s presence. He rushed after her into their outdoor pasture. The magical moment came when Mr. G began eating from Jellybean’s bowl! Never doubt the depth of emotions other animals possess. Mr. G’s grief was as deep and mysterious as a human’s. His joy at reuniting with Jellybean was as beautiful and inspiring as a human’s. Instead of placing the two up for adoption, Animal Place welcomed Mr. G and Jellybean as permanent residents at our 600-acre Grass Valley sanctuary. Their story will live on, inspiring and teaching visitors about nonhuman emotions. ...
  15. For anyone that missed this story over the last few days ... it's sort of sad but with a happy ending. The unlikely pair spent a decade in a 12-by-12 dirt plot with little food and water with no shade, shed or barn. They were rescued from a life of neglect in Southern California, but they were split up and sent to different sanctuaries. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv2OGph5Kec A Goat Ends His Hunger Strike After Reuniting with His Donkey Best Friend http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2014/05/27/mr-g-and-jellybean-an-burro-and-goat-love-story-taking-the-internet-by-storm/ 05/27/2014 A goat named Mr. G received the surprise of his life recently when he was reunited with his best friend, a donkey named Jellybean. The pair's inspiring friendship began when they lived together for years in the menagerie of a hoarder; after her brood was taken away from her, Mr. G and Jellybean were split up between two different sanctuaries. Mr. G was taken to California's Animal Place, where the owners soon noted his emotional distress. The buck sat in his pen all day, refusing to eat or even move. Tests revealed there was nothing medically wrong with him – Mr G's only disease was loneliness. After four days of Mr. G's unofficial hunger strike, Animal Place realized something needed to be done. The sanctuary workers contacted their counterparts and asked if they could take Jellybean in as well. The donkey arrived three days later. Upon seeing his pal again, the goat instantly perked up, but as Animal Place described, "It was only when he smelled Jellybean's unique scent that Mr. G realized the truth – his dearest friend had returned!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Google http://www.google.com/search?complete=0&hl=en&source=hp&q=Mr.+G+and+Jellybean&btnG=Google+Search&gbv=1
  16. Yes that is very a very similar topic and not that old also ... didn't see it earlier. Have to agree with you vinifera ... most of those "hidden gems" have no interest to me also. There was a time that I needed some time zone checks but now my cell phone has a Time Zone map. Maybe a few would be of interest to somebody.
  17. Doesn't seem to be the NSA but the data may end up there anyway ... sooner or later. What right do these companies have to collect personal information and then sell it for a profit? We get no money or royalties from the collecting. Brokers Use ‘Billions’ Of Data Points To Profile Americans http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/brokers-use-billions-of-data-points-to-profile-americans/2014/05/27/b4207b96-e5b2-11e3-a86b-362fd5443d19_story.html Data brokers that quietly gather billions of pieces of data on Americans should be required to operate more openly, so that those categorized as “financially challenged” or possibly suffering from serious medical conditions have the ability to check and challenge those characterizations, a federal report said Tuesday. The data broker industry, which is lightly regulated, develops profiles of hundreds of millions of people using online and offline sources, such as magazine subscriptions, visits to Web sites, posting on social networking services and purchase histories, the Federal Trade Commission reported. The information sold to marketers can list race, income and homeownership. Categories used to label consumers include “Bible Lifestyle,” “Smoker in Household” and “New Age/Organic Lifestyle,” the report said. One category, called “Rural Everlasting,” describes people of retirement age who have “low educational attainment and low net worths.” FTC officials, who based their report on documents gathered by issuing subpoenas to nine data brokers in December 2012, expressed concern about how the data is collected, how it’s used and the potential for making errors that are kept secret from the consumers themselves. “The extent of consumer profiling today means that data brokers often know as much – or even more – about us than our family and friends, including our online and in-store purchases, our political and religious affiliations, our income and socioeconomic status, and more,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. “It’s time to bring transparency and accountability to bear on this industry on behalf of consumers, many of whom are unaware that data brokers even exist.” No evidence of illegal activity was described in the report, though the FTC cited the potential for abuse when data brokers gather information about health-related issues. Among the health data collected, the report said, was whether a household contained an allergy sufferer or a person concerned about weight loss or cholesterol. One category was “Diabetes Interest.” Stuart P. Ingis, general counsel for the Direct Marketing Association, which represents nearly 2,000 companies that collect and distribute consumer data, said that the FTC investigation failed to reveal actual cases of abuse of personal information. “You’d think if there was a real problem, they’d be able to talk about something other than potential.” ...
  18. I will admit, I wasn't aware of all these features but I'm sure many others probably did know most of them ... kind of interesting. Google Search: 15 Hidden Features http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/10346736/Google-search-15-hidden-features.html Google is used by millions of people to navigate the web every day, but how many of us really put it through its paces? The Telegraph digs out a few of the search engine's hidden gems. 1. Calculator Google's calculator function is far more powerful than most people realise. As well as doing basic maths (5+6 or 3*2) it can do logarithmic calculations, and it knows constants (like e and pi), as well as functions like Cos and Sin. Google can also translate numbers into binary code – try typing '12*3 in binary'. 2. Site search By using the 'site:' keyword, you can make Google only return results from one site. So for example, you could search for "site:telegraph.co.uk manchester united" and only get stories on Manchester United from the Telegraph website. 3. Conversions Currency conversions and unit conversions can be found by using the syntax: <amount> <unit1> in <unit2>. So for example, you could type '1 GBP in USD', '20 C in F' or '15 inches in cm' and get an instant answer. 4. Time zones Search for 'time in <place>' and you will get the local time for that place, as well as the time zone it is in. 5. Translations A quick way to translate foreign words is to type 'translate <word> to <language>'. So for example, 'translate pomme to english' returns the result apple, and 'translate pomme to spanish' returns the result 'manzana'. 6. Search for a specific file type If you know you are looking for a PDF or a Word file, you can search for specific file types by typing '<search term> filetype:pdf' or '<search term> filetype:doc' 7. Check flight status If you type in a flight number, the top result is the details of the flight and its status. So, for example, typing in BA 335 reveals that British Airways flight 335 departs Paris at 15.45 today and arrives at Heathrow Terminal 5 at 15.48 local time. 8. Search for local film showings Search for film showings in your area by typing 'films' or 'movies' followed by your postcode. In the UK, this only narrows it down to your town or city. In the US this is more accurate, as results are displayed according to zip-code. 9. Weather forecasts Type the name of a city followed by 'forecast', and Google will tell you the weather today, including levels of precipitation, humidity and wind, as well as the forecast for the next week, based on data from The Weather Channel. 10. Exclude search terms When you're enter a search term that has a second meaning, or a close association with something else, it can be difficult to find the results you want. Exclude irrelevant results using the '-' sign. So for searches for 'apple' where the word 'iPhone' is not used, enter 'apple -iPhone'. 11. Public data To see trends for population and unemployment rates of different cities and counties, type 'population' or 'unemployment rate' followed by the location. So for example, typing 'unemployment rate uk' returns the answer 7.7 percent, and shows a graph of unemployment rates over the last 10 years 12. Related search To search for web pages that have similar content to a given site, type 'related:' followed by the website address into the Google search box. For example, typing 'related:telegraph.co.uk' gives a list of other UK newspaper websites. 13. Package tracking If you have a package tracking number from the USPS, UPS or FedEx, simply plug it into Google Search and it will provide a convenient link for you. 14. Define Google's dictionary function allows you to type define:term and get definitions of words. So a search for define:discombobulated tells you that it is the past participle, past tense of discombobulate, which means to disconcert or confuse. 15. Barrel Roll Simply type “do a barrel roll” into the search bar and Google dutifully obeys. Warning: this Google trick is known to make grown men squeal with delight. ...
  19. Starting with a new generation of the young ... imagine all the data records the government will have when they turn 21 ... no privacy, no place to hide ... I would think parents can't be happy with this idea ... spying and collecting information on their family and their children. Data collection would have to probably be the whole family ... one big sweep. New Technology Development Pushed by Feds Allows for Data Collection on Every Child http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2014/05/22/Study-New-Technology-Development-Pushed-By-Feds-Allows-For-Data-Collection-on-Every-Child 22 May 2014 A new study released by the Boston-based Pioneer Institute finds that new technology development that has been encouraged through the use of federal grants has served to threaten children’s privacy by allowing the collection of data on every child. Authors of the study Emmett McGroarty, Joy Pullmann, and Jane Robbins make the case that by means of the nationalized Common Core standards, which states were lured into adopting through competitive grants in the Obama administration’s Race to the Top (RttT) stimulus program in 2009, the federal government has used grant funds to induce states to build identical, increasingly sophisticated student data systems. McGroarty, executive director of the Education Project at the American Principles Project (APP), said the study, entitled “Cogs in the Machine: Big Data, Common Core, and National Testing,” exposes “an idea that dates back to the Progressive era.” “It is based in a belief that government ‘experts’ should make determinations about what is successful in education, what isn’t,” he said, “and what sorts of education and training are most likely to produce workers who contribute to making the United States competitive in the global economy.” Though violations of citizen privacy have become major news stories of late, the federal government has urged private sector design of student data collection systems at the same time it encourages individual states to participate in data collection initiatives such as the Data Quality Campaign, the Early Childhood Data Collaborative, and the National Student Clearinghouse, all of which help to increase the collection and sharing of children’s data. .... article is longer at the link
  20. submix8c ... sorry for the mix up ... yes I already had that last IE8 update that came out after April 8th installed. In my mind I thought that update had been released "near" the end of April ... forgot it was May 1st. So I am up to date on all "official" updates with a clean image backup. ...
  21. -X- ... understand about not wanting lose the web site ... I just saw May 2014, even though it was May 1, 2014. I just compared KB numbers and they didn't match, which of course they wouldn't. I'm not even sure I will put any newer updates on my computer ... just stop with April unless there are Time Zone and rvkroots.exe updates. I will see what others are doing after April 2014. So Time Zone and rvkroots.exe might show up down the road? thanks ...
  22. Thanks for the replies and info. OK bphlpt ... I got the link and the Drive folder. It's OK if I do mess my computer up ... I have an image backup to go back to so I can experiment with all this new stuff and get everything figured out to to do it correctly. 5eraph ... I misread -X-'s web site ... just saw May 2014 and thought he had posted some EOL updates. Tripredacus ... I don't fully understand everything so far in this thread but it's starting to sink in a little. I am not aware of all the differences in the various downloads. I haven't installed anything as of now ... just wanted to see what the Windows Update site would show for the May updates. thanks again ...
  23. OK ... I am a little confused on a couple of things ... as usual with technical stuff. I put the registry entries that dencorso posted earlier on my XP setup. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WindowsEmbedded\ProductVersion] "FeaturePackVersion"="SP3" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\WEPOS] "Installed"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\WES] "Installed"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady] "Installed"=dword:00000001 ---------------- then I went to Windows update and these two updates showed up to be downloaded: XP Updates May 2014 Security Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB2926765) 05/13/2014 Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB2953522) 05/13/2014 (3.2 MB) ----------------- Are these correct for my XP SP3 setup? I only have .NET Framework 2 installed but no updates for .NET Framework 1 show up ... but I understand from reading earlier that those .NET updates have to be found another way. I have to re-read all that again. When I go to -X-'s XP download site the KB updates he has for May 2014 do not match the KB updates that I show. From -X-'s site ... His update list: May 1, 2014 + Windows-KB89083O-Vx.xxb.cab [1], [10] + IE8-WindowsXP-KB2964358-x86-custom-ENU.exe - Windows-KB89083O-Vx.xx.cab replaced by Windows-KB89083O-Vx.xx-b.cab Note: Windows-KB89083O-Vx.xxb.cab is just a filename change for the MSRT desktop shortcut readme file. Also, harkaz ... I can't find your drive folder that you mentioned ... "You can download the latest files from my Drive folder." I went to the link that you posted earlier ... RyanVM and wasn't able to see any downloads. I also didn't see any updates in the 1st post. thanks ...
  24. We all have those moments ... especially politicians ! Glad to see you were able to get the oxygen feed back to normal and have had a full recovery ... Outer Space isn't much fun without a good supply of the basics ... including oxygen.
  25. I am willing to give him the benefit of doubt and that he might not have realized what he was saying ... going by his name, I am taking a guess ... and mind you, this is only a guess that there may have been a malfunction with his space suit and for a brief time his brain was starved for a good supply of oxygen ... I'm sure when he is able to get all the controls and knobs lined up again, the oxygen will allow him to make a full recovery ... and all will be well ... we can only hope for the best.
