  1. Just a few minutes ago I solved my problem as to not being able to download updates to MalwareBytes v1.75 ... I use Proxomitron as a proxy and somehow it was no longer listed in the Settings part of the program. It may have been when I tried the new 2.0 version and decided to go back to the older 1.75 version. After entering the proxy information again, the update part does work for me. Didn't notice the info was gone. When no one else "here" or "anywhere" posted about the same problem, I figured it has to be on my end somewhere ... just took me awhile to figure it out. ...
  2. It downloads for me at both links ... on the first link posted when I hit the green download button ... not sure if it's for XP but something is downloading and at the second link you have a choice for either the 64 or 86 version. I don't use MSE but it seems to still be there.
  3. I am not seeing that about XP ... "Microsoft Security Essentials is no longer available for Windows XP" ... when I go (now) to that first link I still see XP listed ... maybe it's there somewhere but I don't see it. Microsoft Security Essentials Key Features Comprehensive malware protection Supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP Available in 33 languages Simple, free* download Protects you quietly in the background Automatic updates .... I not challenging anyone ... just reporting what I am seeing.
  4. Yes for the short answer ... unless of course, when I decide to download and install the last XP updates my notebook should happen to catch fire and explode, then I may have a problem !!! I plan to wait a week or two to see if there are any update problems reported. added ... I see where China may be an exception and XP users there may get more security updates after today. China's Windows XP Users to Still Get Security Support 03 March 2014 http://news.techworld.com/operating-systems/3504738/chinas-windows-xp-users-to-still-get-security-support/ Microsoft is making a special exception in the way it retires Windows XP in China, and will continue offering security support for the OS to users in the nation. To do so, the U.S. software giant is partnering with China's leading Internet security vendors, Microsoft said in a Sunday posting on its official account with Sina Weibo, a top social networking site in the country. Outside of China, Microsoft is dropping support of Windows XP on April 8, meaning that users of the OS will no longer receive security patches meant to fix vulnerabilities in the software. .... more at the link, perhaps some of those updates will make it around the globe, who can say ! Also, this is interesting: 70% of China XP Users Never Applied Updates Thirdly, data shows that 70 percent of China's XP users in the last 13 years have not chosen to use Microsoft's periodic security service updates. For most of the users, XP's retirement will have a limited impact. In spite of this, Microsoft and several domestic vendors will soon release a series of security measures, and offer continued protection to these users, before they eventually decide to upgrade to a new OS. ...
  5. So you are saying you are able to update version 1.75 with the latest definition. When I try to get the latest update ... a box pops up saying: An error has occurred. Please report this to our support team. Program Error Updating (Host not found) There are some other words but no update happens ... worked fine the last time I updated on the 23rd. ...
  6. Thanks ... I had read all that earlier and saw that there was no manual update for the newer version. I also doubled checked after I installed it. I didn't "attack" the new version since most people may like the whole setup ... most of the complaints have been it has the Windows 8 look. I just like the look and feel of version 1.75 ... I guess I lucked out getting the March 23rd update before the updates were cut off. If anyone finds future updates for MBM v1.75 ... let the few of us still interested know.
  7. OK that may be "old news" but my real question is as follows. I really don't like the new version and am going to stay with the older version 1.75 for my XP system. I can't find any newer manual updates beyond March 23rd ... last time I updated. The new version seems to have been released around that time also ... MajorGeeks has a date of March 24th for the newer 2.0 version. I tried the newer version and decided to stay with the older version ... I found some info saying the older version will continue to be supported ... both free and paid. So far the auto update on version 1.75 doesn't work for me and I can't find any online download sites for the older manual update. Anyone also have any luck with a newer manual or auto update for version 1.75? ... if anyone else is also going to stay with the older version. What does Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 mean for me? https://helpdesk.malwarebytes.org/entries/45274777-What-does-Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware-2-0-mean-for-me-#will-you-continue-supporting Will you continue supporting my Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75? Yes, we will continue to support Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75 free and paid (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro) with regular database updates. You will still be protected from new threats. Current users of MBAM 1.75 can upgrade to 2.0 for free at https://www.malwarebytes.org/update.
  8. Good article dencorso ... anybody going to the link in dencorso's post ... there is sort of a Windows XP poll on the right side at the bottom. Windows 7 is ahead but XP is in second place at this time. Cast your vote for fun and upset the M$ crowd ! Windows XP end of life poll Which operating system will you use after Windows XP support ends on 8 April? ... not sure if this poll is still active or not ... the web page has a March 7th date but the article is March 28th.
  9. Nothing really to post ... just making mention of the "historical event" ! ... 10 days and counting. Found this XP article from March 21st ... from the article below: WINDOWS XP EXISTING UPDATES We've talked to Microsoft and it has confirmed that all existing security patches and updates for Windows XP will still be available after support officially ends. This means that after the 8th April 2014, you'll still be able to use Windows Update to download all existing security patches. This is important, as if you re-install Windows XP, you should still apply all of the existing patches in order to make the base operating system as secure as it should be. There is a worry that Microsoft will decide at some point to pull the updates from its website or make them harder to get. Don't worry, as the best thing you can do when support ends is to make a custom XP disc with SP3 and all updates pre-applied. As our instructions in the previous link show you, slipstreaming is a brilliant thing to do. This takes your original XP installation files and bundles together the service pack and updates into it. When you install XP from this disc, it's completely up-to-date with no need to visit Windows Update for anything. Given the situation with XP, this is the best thing that any existing XP user can do. When Windows XP Support Ends, This is How You Secure Your PC and Save All Updates. http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/software/1304965/when-windows-xp-support-ends-this-is-how-you-secure-your-pc-and-save-all-updates 21 Mar 2014 David Ludlow It's soon going to be a tough time for a lot of people, as Microsoft is pulling support for Windows XP on 8th April 2014. With no more security updates after that date, the security implications are huge, particularly as this aged OS still commands almost 30 per cent of the desktop market, according to NetMarketShare. Only Windows 7, with around 47 per cent of the market, sits above Windows XP, with the much maligned Windows 8 taking just shy of seven per cent of the OS cake. more at the link ... Might as well add this link also ... 10. Was looking for a free password generator to have on my computer to use anytime ... there are plenty of online generators but there doesn't seem to be many to download and have ready to use. I found one two years ago but I can't seem to find it on any of my old software CDs / Dvds ... still have some to go through. However, I found this free one a few days ago and it seems to be very good ... for anyone also interested. Secure Password Generator http://www.securityxploded.com/secure-password-generator.php Secure Password Generator is is a free desktop based tool to quickly generate strong & secure password. Secure Password Generator helps you to create strong password using one or more of the following character sets * Uppercase Letters (A-Z) * Lowercase Letters (a-z) * Numbers (0-9) * Special Symbols ($,#, ?, *, & etc) It is very easy to use with a nice GUI interface. You can generate password of length ranging from 5 to 500 characters. Also being a offline tool makes it easy to use anytime anywhere without internet connectivity. It is fully portable tool and includes Installer also. It works on both 32 bit & 64 bit platforms starting from Windows XP to Windows 8. .... forgot to add this earlier ... one thing that I did not like is that when you start this program it tries to connect to the internet as many newly installed programs do today. I have an older version of Zone Alarm installed ... firewall only and that also works great with XP and it stopped it from connecting back home. I suppose if a person is only using the Windows XP firewall that allows outgoing connections ... they wouldn't know this is happening. I set ZA to "not allow" this and other programs to connect unless I give the OK. That could be a draw back if you don't have a firewall that blocks outgoing connections or at least give you a warning. I still think the program seems good and I am using it ... just not letting it connect to the outside, there is no need for it to do so anyway ... it works just fine and I don't need it to be checking for updates or whatever.
  11. These films I have watched ten times or more ... I also like North To Alaska but you mentioned it already and also like many Clint Eastwood films but here's my list ... it was tough not adding a "Dirty Harry" title ... but only ten allowed! 01 Cherry 2000 (1987) David Andrews, Melanie Griffith 02 Jivaro (1954) Fernando Lamas, Rhonda Fleming 03 Lost Horizon (1937) Ronald Colman, Jane Wyatt 04 Lucky Partners (1940) Ronald Colman, Ginger Rogers 05 Hong Kong (1952) Ronald Reagan, Rhonda Fleming 06 Tropic Zone (1953) Ronald Reagan, Rhonda Fleming 07 High Noon (1952) Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly 08 To Catch a Thief (1955) Cary Grant, Grace Kelly 09 Zombie Apocalypse (2011) Ving Rhames, Taryn Manning 10 The Rains Came (1939) Tyrone Power, George Brent
  12. Post 5307 by jaclaz (Part 2) In other words, ponder on his words, but DO NOT take him as an example of "efficiency by throwing away things you don't need anymore". Perhaps the term "getting rid of" is better ... that allows a person to "give things away" or "throw things away". Just a few additional thoughts from my earlier post ... I currently have satellite TV which I am fast tiring of and may drop later this year. A few channels still hold my interest ... one being Turner Classic Movies (TCM). I have a fondness for old silent and early sound films. Many really good films that I would never have a chance to see or know about. Some great stars (at that time) that I would never know about if it weren't for TCM. Just two days ago (Mar 19th) TCM had a birthday salute to Betty Compson, who I had never heard of. They played some of her films for about 12 hours through the day, didn't get to see them all but I saw some very interesting early "talkie" films from 1928 that were really good ... put two of them on DVD. She was a silent star as a young girl and woman. She actually played the violin as a young girl and that helped her get into show business. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0173993/ "A mining engineer's daughter, blond, blue-eyed Betty Compson began in show business playing violin in a Salt Lake City vaudeville establishment for $15 a week. Following that, she went on tour, accompanied by her mother, with an act called 'the Vagabond Violinist'. Aged eighteen, she appeared on Alexander Pantages Theatre Circuit, again doing her violin solo vaudeville routine, and was spotted there by comedy producer Al Christie. Christie quickly changed her stage name from Eleanor to Betty. For the next few years, she turned out a steady stream of one-reel and two-reel slapstick comedies, frequently paired with Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle." Betty Compson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Compson Betty Compson (March 19, 1897 – April 18, 1974) was an American actress. Born Eleanor Luicime Compson in Beaver, Utah, she had an extensive film career. Her father died when she was young, and she was forced to drop out of school and earn a living for herself and her mother. She obtained employment as a violinist at a theater in Salt Lake City, Utah. Anyway, in 1916 when she was 18 going on 19 ... she was in a total of 42 films ... they were called short films but she was a busy teenager ... I counted 42 and she was busy before in 1915 and after 1916. I no longer find the films of today very interesting with all the phony digital effects, even films from the 70's and early 80's still had interesting special effects but today it's all computer generated for the most part and they just have no magic like earlier films. If you want to see a real special effects film ... with no computer made up stuff, watch "The Rains Came" from 1939 with George Brent. "It was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning in the category of "Special Effects and Sound Effects", for the earthquake and flood sequences. It became the first film to win an Academy Award for Best Special Effects, beating out The Wizard of Oz for the same Oscar." Now those special effects are still amazing every time I watch that film. Just two days ago I bought my last DVD (so I say), it's a special release (Jan 2014) of the film "It' a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963). One of the funniest films ever made ... just about every comedian of the time is in that film. Criterion Collection has released a 5 DVD restored version on Blu-ray and DVD with an extended version and many extras. Some pretty good special effects in that film also. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World http://www.amazon.com/Its-World-Criterion-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B00GBT61YS/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1395404735&sr=1-1&keywords=It%27s+a+Mad+Mad+Mad+Mad+World This has gotten longer than I planned but I will continue ... but I no longer feel that I like or need new films or satellite TV. It will be two years next month (April) that I started the switch from Windows 98SE to Windows XP. I really don't miss 98SE and will probably never fool with it again. There was a time that I thought I'd be with 98SE forever, hunted down all the software I could find but I decided two years ago to give XP another try and this time I "liked it" ... never looked back or had second thoughts. I still have all the software put away and will keep it, exactly why I don't know. Someone will find those old CDs and DVDs labeled "Windows 98SE Software", laugh and throw them out. I talked about this film already ... "Cherry 2000" (1988) ... it's 2017 and modern tech has crumbled and "old" is back in style ... including toaster ovens. Cherry 2000 http://www.amazon.com/Cherry-2000-Melanie-Griffith/dp/B0000542CA/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1395405879&sr=1-2&keywords=Cherry+2000 Well we all will make the decision one day, what's important to "get rid off" or to keep "just a little longer". ...
  13. Post 5307 by jaclaz ... very well written, thought provoking post dealing with what all we store. Good one to save and read every so often ... I tend to keep my XP setup to the size that will will always fit on one image backup DVD. I have one 500 GB USB hard drive to move things to as a "temporary" storage hold ... though some items have been on that 500 GB drive much longer than I planned for them to be. Eventually I plan and do burn items to a DVD for permanent storage ... this could be XP software programs, YouTube videos, music, news articles and just other stuff that I think I will want to look at one day or read a second time. I don't save a lot of YouTube videos but I have saved many through the years that I will probably never watch again ... just don't have the time. For sure after I'm gone someday or no longer have need for my computers, will anyone even be interested in what I "collected" or thought was good enough to "save" to watch or read again one day ... probably not, the computers will be already old and older and probably scrapped ... the DVDs of what I stored or thought was important to store will most likely be tossed out. Who, in their busy day to day existence, will have the time or want to take the time to go through old computer junk or old DVDs - CDs ??? The picture that I use is Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) who's music I very much like ... have collected through the years all of his music, everything that exist today on a CD. Hopefully that collection would be of some interest to someone, but maybe not. Maybe ... 30 to 50 years from now, someone will still want an old Windows 98 or Windows XP computer setup ... with the fast pace of life today and probably faster tomorrow, I just can't imagine who will have the time or the interest to check out old computer electronics. Just seems so true ... today will be very old, very quick! ...
  14. Tardigrades ... never heard of them but very interesting and hardy animals as you said. http://www.google.com/search?complete=0&hl=en&source=hp&q=tardigrade&btnG=Google+Search&gbv=1 Tardigrades (also known as waterbears or moss piglets) ... they do look like waterbears or moss piglets. Meet the toughest animal on the planet: The water bear that can survive being frozen or boiled, float around in space and live for 200 years. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2280286/Meet-toughest-animal-planet-The-water-bear-survive-frozen-boiled-float-space-live-200-years.html Thanks for the information. extra ... How to Find and Care for a Pet Tardigrade ( Water Bear ) http://www.wikihow.com/Find-and-Care-for-a-Pet-Tardigrade-(-Water-Bear-) Tardigrades ( Water Bears ) live in moss and ferns. They are some of the most amazing animals on Earth. They can survive: * Temperatures as low as -200 °C (-328 °F) and as high as 151 °C (304 °F); * Freezing in a block of ice, * Lack of oxygen, * Lack of water for as long as decade(s). * Levels of X-ray radiation 1000x the lethal human dose, * Most noxious chemicals, * Boiling alcohol, * Low pressure of a vacuum; like that of space, * And high pressure (up to 6x the pressure of the deepest part of the ocean). They may be microscopic, but are very cool!
  15. jaclaz ... man, where do you come up with this stuff? ... now we have amoebas in space! ... no water and deep cold but they sure look like amoebas. Something you might see under the microscope except these "objects" have to be larger to be seen by human eyes ... interesting, not much comment from the people on board as they were watching. Have to be some kind of "space junk" ... maybe yes, maybe no.
  16. When I first read about the large amoebas yesterday ... I was thinking maybe another "food source" ... someday "farm raised amoebas" in your local store for stir fry or whatever ... until I read a little further in the article: "Recent studies indicate that by trapping particles from the water, xenophyophores can concentrate high levels of lead, uranium and mercury and are thus likely resistant to large doses of heavy metals. They also are well suited to a life of darkness, low temperature and high pressure in the deep sea." So they are probably not a possible food item but maybe someday a way to clean the environment of some toxic wastes ... much like some of the bacteria strains that feed on oil and such. Just a wild idea of course ... these amoebas come from great depths with tremendous pressure but who knows if one day they could serve a purpose closer to the surface of our world. Slightly off topic but I just read this about the freshwater brain-eating amoeba, which is almost always fatal but a 12 yr old girl did survive with the help of an experimental drug from the CDC ... this was last year. The article is dated September 2013. Brain amoeba found in tests of water supply where boy died in Louisiana September 13, 2013 http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/12/us/louisiana-brain-amoeba-water-supply/ ... from the article with her picture to the left ... good for her that she made it, very lucky her Mom was persistent. Officials said less than 1% of patients survive the deadly brain infection caused by this amoeba. But an experimental drug from the CDC has shown promise in fighting it. Kali Hardig, a 12-year-old in Arkansas, survived after contracting the amoeba in July, possibly at a Little Rock, Arkansas, water park. "Doctors credited Kali's mom, Traci Hardig, with her survival, saying she brought her daughter to the hospital early and pushed for more tests. "If you believe that there's something more wrong with your daughter or your son than a simple virus or stomach flu, stay in there, hang in there," Hardig told CNN. "Talk to the doctor ... and reassure them that this is not a normal illness." The first symptoms of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis appear one to seven days after infection, including headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and a stiff neck, according to the CDC." ... when most of us studied amoebas in science class, at least for me ... they were just "curious one celled" organisms visible with a microscope. Now we have giant and dangerous amoebas, maybe they were always around even then, probably were. ...
  17. I see since I posted earlier today the comments are now at 59. They make for interesting back and forth reading ... I don't have much need for a VM program myself and I rely on image backups for the ultimate repair job. I do have 2 or 3 free VM programs put away to use one day, if I would need one.
  18. There is an offering today that has some mention of XP and EOL in April 2014. I never download any of the offerings but usually check everyday ... sometimes there are some good offerings but usually someone will post about a free or several free alternatives that are just as good ... without having to go through all the hoops and registration stuff. Giveaway of the Day http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ Click on the yellow-gold box "Proceed to Download Page" Today the giveaway is Paragon Virtualization Manager 14 Compact (English). This is their description ... "March 13, 2014 Still need to run Windows XP as a virtual machine? Paragon’s Virtualization Manager is the solution. There is some XP discussion going on and maybe someone here want to try the offering. May be some mention of other programs as the day goes on. Additional ... a few more comments have been posted and this may be a good program to try out ... Paragon is a good name and a few have said the "registration part" went smooth ... that seems to always be a complaint with some of the daily offerings ... registration doesn't work or is a hassle.
  19. OK ... so they have smoke signals, drums, landlines, flashing mirrors to signal to the next mountain, carrier pigeons ... did I leave anything out ??? I still say if there are any teens living there, it has to be rough ... everywhere else, normal teens looking at their cellphone every 5 seconds, tapping messages out constantly ... but not if you live in that area!
  20. Unless I don't quite understand what I am seeing but that little KB2934207 update notification makes all those changes to the registry. I never installed it but I had no idea that an MS update does all that to the registry ... I knew there were changes but nothing like that and all that for just a 504 KB download. 21. This is interesting ... Green Bank, West Virginia is situated in the middle of the National Radio Quiet Zone so all all electromagnetic signals are banned within the zone including WiFi and cellphones. The zone was set up to protect the world's largest radio telescopes from electronic interference. I wonder how they enforce that ... must be a tough place to be a teenager, no cellphone calls or texting till you get clear of the 13,000 square mile National Radio Quiet Zone. "Green Bank, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, falls in the middle of the 13,000 square mile National Radio Quiet Zone. Here, mobile phones, radio and TV transmitters and Wi-Fi are forbidden to prevent interference with one of the world's largest radio telescopes." Another EHS sufferer, former bank vice-president Deborah Cooney said she felt she was being 'slowly poisoned' back in San Diego, California. The 50-year-old said her symptoms developed after hundreds of Wi-Fi enabled smart meters were installed next to her home in 2011. Deborah said: 'It began with a constant ringing in my ears. I couldn't sleep in the house anymore and felt sick all the time. 'Any food I brought into the house would make me feel ill. I got heart palpitations. 'It was like I was slowly being poisoned.' Even her pet cat Mimi, a purebred Himalayan, became ill from the harmful radiation she believed had been emitted from the smart meters, she added. ---------------------------------- Americans allergic to electromagnetic signals settle in small West Virginia town where WiFi is banned http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2576848/I-used-sick-time-Dozens-Americans-claim-allergic-electromagnetic-signals-settle-small-West-Virginia-town-WiFi-banned.html ...
  22. Maybe next month so the article goes ... they say it will be diluted as to pose "no harm" ... perhaps. "There are three competing models of the ****ushima radiation plume, differing in amount and timing. But all predict that the plume will reach the West Coast this summer, and the most commonly cited one estimates an April arrival, Buesseler said. A report presented last week at a conference of the American Geophysical Union's Ocean Sciences Section showed that some Cesium 134 has already arrived in Canada, in the Gulf of Alaska area. Cesium 134 serves as a fingerprint for ****ushima, Buesseler said. "The models show it will reach north of Seattle first, then move down the coast," Buesseler said. By the time it gets here, the material will be so diluted as to be almost negligible, the models predict. Radiation also decays. Cesium 134, for example, has a half-life of two years, meaning it will have half its original intensity after that period." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Test West Coast for radiation from Japan http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/03/09/scientists-test-west-coast-for-fukushima-radiation/6213849/ Very low levels of radiation from the ****ushima nuclear disaster likely will reach ocean waters along the U.S. West Coast next month, scientists are reporting. Current models predict that the radiation will be at extremely low levels that won't harm humans or the environment, said Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who presented research on the issue last week. But Buesseler and other scientists are calling for more monitoring. No federal agency currently samples Pacific Coast seawater for radiation, he said. "I'm not trying to be alarmist," Buesseler said. "We can make predictions, we can do models. But unless you have results, how will we know it's safe?" The news comes three years after the devastating Japan tsunami and resulting nuclear accident. On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami with waves as high as 133 feet. More than 15,000 people died and about 6,000 were injured. The earthquake and tsunami knocked out power to cooling pumps at the ****ushima Daiichi nuclear power plant complex, causing meltdowns at three reactors. Last July, Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the plant, acknowledged for the first time that the reactor was leaking contaminated underground water into the ocean. Since then, the news has gotten worse, and there is widespread suspicion that the problem is underreported. ...
  23. I just have a simple batch file to turn "Automatic Updates" and "Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)" on when I need to check the MS Update page and off (Disabled) for most of the month when not needed. Last month I finally (after much tinkering for the last 8 months) have finally come up with a batch file for the "complete" Services list that seems to be perfect for my setup that has Automatic Updates and BITS Disabled ... and then I have the other batch file mentioned above to turn those two Services back on for a quick check. I don't see why Windows XP can't continue to work for a very long time ... when I was still with Windows 98SE I spent several years hunting around for 98 software programs that I might need or want later and burned everything to DVDs ... fortunately a lot of these programs also worked on Windows XP and then after switching to XP, I started searching around for good XP software programs to also save on DVDs. So if some nice programs do disappear down the road, but I don't think that is likely to happen anytime soon ... maybe 20 to 30 years from today there could be a problem with XP but I really do believe there will still be "pockets" of XP holdouts scattered around the world, many will have died off but the "young ones" of today will pick up gauntlet and carry it on till they finally die off and then only maybe will Windows XP finally be a "dead OS". If you need a scanner or printer that works with XP then get one now or have a few put away if you are youngish and intend to stay with XP. This is the time to prepare and put chips, hard drives, printers and whatever you think you might need someday ... software programs ... get it now just like people were doing with Windows 98SE. It's going to be fun, this challenge ... if you get a chance to see the film "Cherry 2000" or have seen it ... remember in the future as high tech crumbled ... people were coming back to "toaster ovens" !!! 25. Very interesting about Jupiter carrying the load to help the rest of us out ! We still get a hit every so often but it could be much worse if the "Big Guy" wasn't there. "The impact of SL9 highlighted Jupiter's role as a kind of "cosmic vacuum cleaner" for the inner Solar System. The planet's strong gravitational influence leads to many small comets and asteroids colliding with the planet, and the rate of cometary impacts on Jupiter is thought to be between two thousand and eight thousand times higher than the rate on Earth. If Jupiter were not present, the probability of asteroid impacts with the Solar System's inner planets would be much greater."
