  1. Recent pokes by my friend leckie at the fact that msfn is hosted on linux need some action! Vote now to get some justice!
  2. Get out of here Pete! No linux sucks allowed! Edit: Anyone who would like me to go over to Pete's (aka leckie) linux (spit) den of unholy ubernerds and beat him with his macintosh keyboard go vote in the Linux - Spaced Invaders poll! Linux - Spaced Invaders
  3. Ywah I've seen bad drivers cause reboot's but windows normaly disables the fauty driver on the second reboot.
  4. If thats the case then sysprep should have no problems, if your getting this problem on multiple machine then it's a fair bet that there is s software problem. If your installing specialised software that has funky licence activation check that it doesn't need to read the CPU serial.
  5. I'm sorry I can't really understand your reply. There is another method you could try, it's called sysprep if all your workstations are identical in hardware you could use this option to create pre-configured hard drive images.
  6. [version] signature="$CHICAGO$" From what I've read the version part is the key, $CHICAGO$ is the beta name for windows 95 but I've yet to find the correct value for XP SP2. Edit:oops $CHICAGO$ indicates the file is valid for all windows OS's, A list of values can be found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....9cacce8.xml.asp
  7. If you have access to a Windows 2000 or 2003 server you may want to try using Remote Installation Services (RIS).
  8. A few more details might be needed here, firstly I'm guessing you build a few systems here and there for clients, yes? If so do you build them all exaclty the same i.e. same motherboards, cpus, RAM, etc.. or do you do custom orders? The thing with sysprep is that if you don't deploy the image on exaclty the same build of machine as you made the image on, it will spit the dummy somthing shoking. It's almost the same as take a hard disk with XP from on older pc and putting it into a new one, sometime it will work but say for example you had a via chipset in the old pc and a super cool awesome nVidia chipset in the new one Xp will die a horribly painful death full of blue screens and reboot loops
  9. Normaly what I do when I get an application that won't remove it's listing from Add/Remove Programs is fire up System Mechanic from iolo software, I've been using that little beauty since Windows 98. It can rip those pesky little entries right out and preform many other wonderful little taks too. Doesn't work too good on 2k3 though.
  10. Does anyone have any good information on Windows XP MCE, I'm looking from either some guides or notes on what files are need, the directory structure on the CD and what the difference is with the keys used. Please PM me if there is info that can't be listed in open forums.
  11. Well it's 10:21 am in Melbourne, Australia and I've just crawled myself out bed hoping to find some SP2 goodies waiting for me at the Microsoft homepage. But alas it seems thats not the case. By the way, did we brake MSFN last night?
  12. LOL Yep, I've been in and out for 12 hours now, but seeing as is only just getting dark here in Australia thats not too hardcore
  13. Unfortunatly when I encounter these errors in clients PC I tend to find they have faulty memory moduals, if you have more than one stick of RAM in your PC, try removing one at a time and see if the error goes away.
  14. In other news this evening the worlds largest software producer Micro$oft has announced the abandonment of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Company founder and worlds richest nerd Bill Gates, announced the news from his diamond encrusted toilet bowl. The chief software architect cited issues with rabbid nerds biting him in the street saying "Suffer you little bastards, now you can wait for service pack 3".
  15. Okay people I'm back, had to go service a few PC's. Whats been going on? Wait a minute... DELAYED!!!!??? AGAIN!!!??? Alright Gatesie I WARNED you! PC's are gonna start going BOOM now!
  16. On the bright side of downloading if you consider that WWW infrastructure has grown a great deal since SP1 it might not be as bad to download as we think. Consider that many more people will have broadband thus reducing the amount of time each person is actually downloading. Plus microsoft will be expecting a rush of caffined-up uberberds to be leaching their servers so maybe they've added a few extra file servers to their distributed DNS.
  17. Remember that you will be able to order a CD from Microsoft for free, add to this that there will be a number of retail outlets stocking the SP2 CD. Also you can bet that all the PC hardware and PC Gaming magazines will have SP2 on their cover CD's. If you get really desperate you could go check out a local internet cafe, they would have a broadband connection and will probably already have downlaoded the service pack.
  18. Yes speed of the download might be as bad as the wait. Normaly I can get up to 500 - 600 KB a sec from microsoft with my cable modem but I can jsut see a few routers around microsoft going down when the downloading begins.
  19. Knight_DKN reporting here. Well it's 11:20 am here in Melbourne Australia (GMT +10 For those in other parts of the Microsoft world), no sign of the many builded Serviceses Packes twoess that was first reported from the Microsoft TechNet digsite. My team is starting to show signs of strain, with all our unattended installs polished and ready we are waiting egerly for the hunting parties to report the capture of a Serviceses Packes twoess. 11:30 am We could be in serious trouble here, less than 2 days from the biggest LAN party in Melbourne and still no sign of the elusive creature. 11:31 am Can't... stand... the wait 11:32 am Aww screw it... I'm gonna play some Doom.
  20. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Alright I think it's time for some drastic action! Either Microsoft releases Service Pack 2... or we start suiciding PC's... that or convert to Mandrake.
