  1. Resolved with this very easy solution.. http://weblogzz.blogspot.com/2008/01/insta...-pen-drive.html
  2. Ive spent all weekend readingwhat seems like hundreds of posts.. in an effort to be able to install XP from a usb stick, or even hard drive... onto pc... Ive tried PEtoUSB, Grub4dos, read many articles.. but none seem to give a single step-by-step guide on how to achieve this... Ive been able t o get BARTPE to run from an 8gb fat32 stick, using grub4dos, after reading a few articles, so I thought I may be able to isntall XP by substituting my unattended xp install cd for the BartPE install info on the stick.. as I though Brub4dos would just attempt to load the NTLDR... But no joy.... I also tried to run the winnt.exe manually, got the blue screen intaller.. but it just set there for about 20 minutes identifying hardware.... I just nedd to know Yes it is possible, or no it isnt, before I spend more time trying to do it.... Most of my searching brings back results on actually installing XP to your usb stick, similar to BartPE from the stick.. but I actually want to install XP onto pcs from the usb stick, or usb hard drive... Im quite suprised how difficult it seams...
  3. I use hyperos to multiboot 6 OSes on my main pc... they are all bootable clones of a single install Now I share the pagefile, and some others...but can I move my entire userprofiles (all docs and settings) to another drive, the same location for each OS? I know this can be difficult once OS installed, but I know you can specify new locaiton during unattended.. Is it possible for each OS to utilise the same location.. Each OS may have different apps, but has the same users.... Thanks
  4. Several years ago, I got onto this thread, and used this method to allow me to assign my own drive letters to partitions during unattended XP instal... I remember it worked well.. but just wondered if this was still the preferred method, or is there a newer alternative? Original mapdrive thread I have always had a SYSCACHE drive on another disk, which I call X to which I move the pagefile, temp files etc.. I havent used mapdrive for a couple of years now, but it would be handy again to do this on my new systems.... Thanks
  5. Ive been following these instructions: http://www.digwin.com/view/installing-wind...usb-flash-drive I am having trouble formatring my usb stick... I follow the process using PeToUSB, but get an error on 100% saying: One thing I am thinking is that the drive is a Corsair Voyager GT 8gb, and I dont know if the fact it is 8gb is the problem. Which brings me to another question... Can you partition a usb stick..?? I have a 4gb stick which formatted ok... maybe I could create a 4gb partition on the 8gb stick, is this possible? Ive looked about but cant find aything that would let me do this... Thanks
  6. Thanks for your tips.. I eventually found the one I had seen... http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html
  7. Ive seen this on a few systmes, but cant seem to find anywhere telling me how to add it... It shows al services and their current state, and you can stop/start them etc.. all from the task manger.. Im sure its a simple tweak, tick box somewhere.. but have searched all the usual places.. Any ideas???
  8. So when is the next one actually available..??? The only fix I found was to have a copy of the i386 dir on the pc, and change the windows install path in the registry to point to it... Its really annoying!!! Just been reading this: I dont integrate IE7, remove any compnents.. the only thing I actually integrate is RyanVMs hotifx pack... thats it, and I still get the popups!!! Maybe I would be better going back to an eariler version, but cant remember which one I first encountered the popups on..!!
  9. Can somepone please point me in the right direction... I am just experimenting with a linux based server, primarily for NAS, and came accross clarkconnect (www.clarkconnect.com), which offered exactly what I was looking for, and seemed to make things a bit easier for a first timer.... However, I thought I was on the right track, setup my server, updated DNS so it pointed to the static IP that my ISP gives me, but whenever I try to get to it, it presents me with my router admin logon.. which makes sense I suppose, as it is that device which effectively has the IP... I have enabled port forwarding in the hope this would resolve the issue, but it still happens... everytime I try to go to my domain, I get my router admin login... at least I suppose it proves DNS is working ok!!!! Im sure its eomenting very basic, and I will porbably kick myself... but can someone offer any advice, or point me in the right direction??? I cant quite figure out how to redirect the traffic through to the web server directory, to the index.html.... its driving me nuts!!! I have also checked that the web server service is running....!! I just need a starting point!! EDIT: Fixed the problem thanks to another forum.. in case anyone was interested:
  10. Yeah.. think thats now the obvious solution... especially as i have an old socket a, and xpm2600, gig of ram kicking about collecting dust!!! Just need to find a nice case that will maybe support one of the hot swapable drive racks.... Thanks!!
  11. Ive recently been looking at NAS, for centralised storage..but am somewhat horrified to see that transfer speeds, even with GB lan, average around 12MBps.. surely the bottleneck should be the disks at around 50+MBps... why such a holdup... I noticed this when researching the synology 106e.... http://www.synology.com/enu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=839 In theory, is 1gbps, not 125megabytes ps...?? yet transare speeds are a tenth of this... I know in reality speeds are never that high, but surely they cant be as bad as that?? Is this just down to cheap hardware, memory controllers etc??? Other than building a dedicated NAS pc, are there any other solutions...??
  12. No, I installed the 32bit on a 64bit machine... Big enough, 25gb, as I mention in my post things were fine with 64bit RC2, but not with 32bit RC1.. I cant see overcloking was the problem, as RC2 64bit was fine.. just seems tobe consistant with 32bit Vista and my pc, for whatever reason....
  13. I had some bad experiences with RC1 32bit Vista, and had assumed that the recent MSDN release would prove to be a more stable option. When trying RC1 32bit, I would get drive and NTFS corruption which would cause all sorts of problems... I ditched this and tried 64bit, which, worked flawlessly, no errors whatsoever, smooth install, in fact, it was like having anew pc!!! Ive just ha the worst hour of PC disaster I have had for a while, which resulted from an MSDN install... I should have seen the warning signs duing installation, and partition selection, when it reported errors..but after deleting a partition and reformating, Ithough all would go well... How wrong could I be...!!! Install went OK, until just after entering my username, when the pc just hung, and did nothing, so I was forced to reboot... and it eventually made its way to an effectless desktop, no glass/aero.. hmm I thought... I then had more freezes, lockups, screen corruption, and then had a hell of a job rebooting my pc, it would hang during POST!!! I had to even clear my CMOS, which I only did once before about 8 months ago!!!! My pc is usually rock solid, never a problem, so I can only assume it has all been caused by the 32bit installation... Im even wondering whether it truly is compatible with with my 64bit rig, given the problems I had even with the RC...!!! Im back in XP now, and all seems well again... I cant believe what a mess it made, and I dont think Ill be trying it again in a hurry.... I cant believe the contrast fromt he 64bit RC2 which was easy to install, and ran like a bat out of hell... Im very disillusioned by the whole ecperience, and doubt 32bit vista will be making it anywhere near my dvd drive again!!! Opteron 146 @2.8ghz Dfi Expert 2gb Muskin RedlineXP X1900xt
  14. Went for a 165 CCBBE 0615EPMW Meant to be a good stepping with many reports of 3ghz, so my 2.8 should be reachable!!
  15. thanks for your advice... Opterons are considered to be of "superior" quality compared to their x2 counterparts...??? Could you assume therefore that in theory they should be equally good for overclocking, although I am aware it can be pot luck if you happen to get one that is... I cant help but wonder if I can hang out for a week or two when the 180's (2.4ghz) are available here that hitting 2.8, and maybe even 3ghz maybe possible.... I have my eye on either the x2 4800 which are gedtting more rare by the hour, but know where I can get one, or the Opty 180, which on paper they are identical cpus, but you cant help but think the Opty may be made of sturner stuff!!! They are almost the same in price too... which would you go for...???
  16. Where do I go from here.. I want the best I can get for the rig Ive got... but my options seem somewhat limited, and I think Ive missed the boat on the x2 4800... Ive got a decent rig for ocing too.... 165, 170, 180 or x2 4400... Any advice???
  17. Happening all the time now... within about 10 mins of installation... getting ntfs corruption reports, scandisk runs during reboots, checks indexes and deletes loads of files... Making the system very unusable...
  18. Have read many articles about Ghost and True Image, but both seem to have inherent probelms with dealing with the Vista partiton... the one time I tried TI (installed on Vista), i believe it corrupted the partition, and during boot, scandisk would run and delete loads of files... Anyone know of a solution to successfully backup/resotre an installation?? Thanks
  19. It would appear that when installing from boot, the installer does not recognise any exisitng partitions and drive letters.. the list of drives to select have no asociate letters, so when you choose the partition, it will be C, as it doesnt see the original C drive... However, if you install through XP, not as an upgrade, it does recognise allthe drive letters.. and I can install to anyh letter I choose, but unfortunately, not the one I want, to keep in with my system config... Odd that it does not seem to detect the drive letter during a clean bot install...???
  20. Just been installing Vista 5536.. and having some interesting pro.. I have a non standard disk config, where I have a 100mb C, Primary Partition for boot files, and multiple logical drives for OS... this allows me to clone a single OS install to multiple partitions, and use partition hiding to boot into any of them.. C is always visible, and my OSs are always on D... Anyway, when I choose to install Vista on a logical drive, it installs ok, but when it boots.. it has become the C drive, while what was the active primary, now becomes the D drive... All other logical partitions are hidden during setup, other than the one I have setup for Vista, and of course, the primary C drive. DOnt really understand what is going on.. other than maybe because its a beta, it just needs a standard install, but then you do get to choose the locaiton of the install during setup... Anyone got any ideas The screenie attached is taken from XP, and shows the C, and D drives... C is always visible, but D is dependent upon which OS is booted into... I hid all my logical partitions so that when I chose to install VISTA it to would become D, but for some reason, it wants to be C, and changes my C to D...????
  21. Thanks... will check that out.. it was Hirens I had been using, and wanted to know how that sort of disk had been created, just wasnt sure if I could mention the disk!!! Thanks for you help.. will check it out!!!
  22. I have a collection of utilites that provide a bootable disk from which I can access o dos style application.. such as Acronis True Image, or Disk Director, Ghost, Partitioning tools.. etc... and want to make a single bootbale disk with custom menu to access/run any of them.. rahter than having half a dozen floppies, or even cds with a meg or 2 on them. Ive seen many such utility disks available, but want to create my own.. but dont really know where to start. Logically, it would be good if you could just take an image of these disks, or archive their contents to a single file that could be run from a boot menu.... Anyone got any good links, suggestions and where to start...??? Ultimately, I would like to incorporate these onto my USB key, which I know is bootable... as I have managed to get one of the above apps (Acronis Disk Director), to install straight onto the device, but I want to add all of my utilites onto it... Im not a noob when it comes to such projects, having done many advanced unattended/multiboot windows disks, but need some references from which to start this project... Thanks in advance!!
  23. x1900xt - 5098 It works fine.. I just hate seeing lots of errors, for no known reason!!!!
  24. Everytime I run 3dMark06.. I get a lot of errors in th e vent log relating to something it cannot seem to find... this seems to register about 20 times during the running of the benchmark... ENTECH64 Google has returned very little... all my drivers, software etc is up to date, and its a clean XP64 build. Anyone heard of this, and know a fix???? Thanks
  25. May want to check out here... http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=287829 Great forum and help with AP.... I run it via runonceex, at first bootup to install all patches... then reboot and install of my apps, regtweaks etc... works great You can also save your default selections and load it during the install...
