  1. I have ImageX and can load/unload registry hives... Hope this changes the solution...
  2. Smooth. Did you somehow downgrade to XP (if you upgraded), or did you delete Vista and reinstall XP afresh?
  3. Help with me writing the program... If anyone here knows VB.NET or C# (or maybe C++.net), then I need some help: I need the DeviceIoControl API to reduce the LCD backlight brightness - but it needs the device name, and when I pass it, it won't work. I use the GetDeviceDriverBaseName function - but I need a good sample to use it correctly. Any help is greatly appreciated (and will probably be rewarded with the program!).
  4. It already kinda does that. Go to Power Save Mode and the translucency is disabled, but the rest of Aero isn't.
  5. Yeah, I do have a thought. (I thought that it was useless, too.) Seems like one of the control panel applets (speech or another) needs the service - do a google.
  6. Does anyone know how to get back the MS Sam, etc. which were there? I have used vLite - and I don't see any speech in the list (but don't know if it was in there originally). My Speech control panel item is gone, and when I clicked a shortcut in the Help & Support, nothing happened. I have the original installation ISO. Any help is appreciated. P.S.: TTS kinda sucks, but I need it for a program - a Road Atlas. Yes, it's bad. But Vista's is a LOT better than that of XP.
  7. Well... I found the solution . None of you guys did? It's kinda dirty and I don't know why it worked, but it did: Disclaimer (should always put it): *I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING MENTIONED HERE, WHETHER IT BLOWS UP YOUR COMPUTER, FORMATS THE HARD DISK, OR ANYTHING ELSE. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.* Download both the RC1 and RTM drivers. (Got cable?) Extract both of them. Rename RC1\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH_INF to RC1\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH_INF.BACKUP Copy the RTM\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH_INF folder into the RC1\Packages\Drivers\Display (Which is why you backed the original up in the first place) Now, Update Driver and point to the new RC1\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH_INF. (Have Disk should work, I don't remember. If it doesn't, uninstall the display adapter and now Select From List and Select Lrom Location to that folder. It should work) Now, RESTART (If it SAYS the driver won't work, just restart). Install the ATI Catalyst Control Center by itself. Now, you have the working (NO OPENGL OR D3D for CS) RTM driver with (probably) a few RC1 files, which were not found earlier.
  8. For you guys who boot 10+ - Do you have EFI or do you have 6+ Linux systems, which don't need a primary partition? Either way, it seems crazy I have 2 - 3: it changes frequently (1-2 XP Pro, 1 Vista RC2)
  9. Oh, I'm really sorry.. I capitalized STILL because I couldn't italicize it (I was in quick reply.) I wasn't angry or anything. And yes, I am talking about the orb - which file is it in? (I don't want a PrintScreen!) Thanks!
  10. That STILL doesn't answer my question! It's NOT in the .MSStyles file (at least no recognizable format)
  11. Let's see... is the Software Licensing service (slsvc) turned on?
  12. Well, I don't know whether you're agreeing with me, or telling me to use the already-provided drivers which came with Vista RC2. In case it's the latter, and you don't already know, the ATI Catalyst only works with its own driver - not the one previously on the computer. Also, CounterStrike Condition Zero worked with XP with OpenGL, but not with Vista now - no D3D or OpenGL.
  13. Does anyone know why I'm getting this message: "The system cannot find the device specified." I have the above mentioned device, and Vista RC2 - Seems like the Vista RTM Catalyst for RTM doesn't work on RC2... BTW: I don't know if this is the cause, but I have used vLite on this installation - But I haven't removed any drivers. The driver is detected, but in the middle, it gives me that error.
  14. Hi, guys. Please tell me if this helps any of you having trouble with Vista installing a device - I had this problem, too, but I solved it (a little dirty, though): The Problem: Vista has the drivers for a device, but reports absolutely none when the device is plugged in for the first time; Add Hardware reports little or no drivers in the All Devices section. The Solution: Copy \Windows\inf to some other folder, preferable outside that of Windows. Then, when searching for the driver, Have Disk to that folder\inf ... tell me if it works. For some (probably messed up permissions) reason, my Vista RC2 had this problem - I had a lot more problems, so I reinstalled and everything is fine.
  15. Uh, just a couple questions: Did the laptop Processor Power Management help? I set it at 40% in Power Saver and switch whenever I need to. Just out of curiousity, what is that program's name?
  16. Hi. I see. I have two solutions for you: 1. Have you checked out the processor power management and the indexing service in the advanced options in advanced power settings? They help a lot. Don't look at task manager for CPU usage - it doesn't seem to show it. However, it really does affect things - try putting a max of 50% for battery. 2. Out of the kindness of my heart , I may write a visual basic 2005 program (which I'll test to see if it works with vista) which will do all these for you, plus enable/disable devices. I may or may not do it (depending how hard it is), but if you want me to, I recommend PMing me so I'll know. (PS: Use it at your own risk!)
  17. I don't know what the "orb" is , but I'm talking about the glowing ball which contains the windows logo.
  18. Does anyone know the location of the Vista RC2 boot animation (actually, overlay)? I'm not talking about the stupid progress bar or the faded aurora, but the windows "glowing". Is it a resource in winload.exe.mui or something? I've tried but had no success.
  19. Thanks, Mr. Spooky (or Ms. Spooky). Yes, I mean the blurring of the titlebar, where it is tanslucent and not transparent (look them up). No, I do not mean cleartype. Also, you said "unless you hack some files". Is there any way to do it?
  20. Thanks a lot - I wish - but I wanted to disable the blurring, not the transparency.
  21. How do you disable Aero's blurring of title bars in Vista RC2? Don't tell me about previous stuff (like Beta 1, 2, etc.)
