@Mim0 Thanks alot for your reply, mate CU, Martin.

    Windows Updates

@Mimo First, i love your update-list, so thanks alot for that(the thing i like the best is that you have a legend(history) with what to add/remove for each new month, so that we don't have to cross-check the whole page for the dates of each new update)... Anyway, under 'Description', then MS08-036 links instead to MS08-050. Also, MS08-076 lists two XP-SP3 updates, but only one download link is presented for it. Does that mean that the un-presented update: KB954600 is obsolete? Thanks again! CU, Martin.
  3. 1. Maybe you had pre-fetch disabled previously and not now? Disabling prefetch(application) generally speeds up startup(the loading bar runs through lesser times.)
  4. msft uses the terminology 'High-priority' for security updates + critical non-security updates, and 'Optional' for non-security non-critical updates... Personally, then i would want all the security updates no matter what their severity rating and then also the critical non-security updates, and then of-cource i'd have to use my brain as to avoid 'High-priority' marked updates as WGA-N and MRT etc. My point was just that your list e.g. labels KB967715 as 'Optional', while that update on WU is listed 'High-priority' and not 'Optional', which makes for confussion IMHO. That update disables autorun for network drives(only!), which was suppossed to be done by Windows by default, but msft screwed up... (disabling autorun dosen't fix it either!) Anyway, it's your list and your choise, so just continue using your terminology if that feels best for you! CU, Martin.
  5. nLite cabs the binaries and excludes txt files, maybe more file-types, i don't know, but i know it dosen't go through the INF SourceDisksFiles Section and only copies needed files... For that, i would recommend DrvComp(nLite can take pre-cabbed binaries without a problem...)
  6. @Mim0 Hi! I'm pretty sure Kiki was reffering to mbsa(msi), when he said that he had it in HFSVCPACK_SW1... (which isn't required for WU either...) Anyway, nice work on your list! Personally, then i would rather have used the terminology which msft themselves uses for the updates i.e. 'High-priority' and 'Optional' (In the old days it where 'Critical' and 'Recommended'), as you e.g. lists some updates as 'Optional', which are marked on WU as 'High-priority', but it's your decision of course... CU, Martin.
  7. Thanks alot for that, it's much appreciated, mate! CU, Martin.
  8. @fdv I really value your openion, so could you please answer a couple of questions for me please, thanks: 1. Would you in your openion say that it's not a good idea to keep on using Win2k(fdv'ed) after the security-patches comes to an end later this year? (As a personal computer that isn't setup as webpage or print/file server, but just used as a personal computer) 2. For what reason did you change away from Win2k and over to XP? (I'm pretty sure i know the reasons, but still would like to hear it nonetheless ). 3. I have searched all over for info on shdocvw.dll, and everywhere it's stated to be the IE 'web-browser control', and not any info for it's shell functions. If you know, then could you please tell me what that dll has of features for the Windows Explorer shell on Win2k-IE5(i've read it changed in IE6+). PS: If you ever felt bored or something, then i would love if you could make a dosnet.inf file, just as hfslip does... It's just that i hate to have everything unattended, EXCEPT the formating part, so i would love to use BartPE as a unattended "starter" for formating the C: partition and launching the install through winnt32.exe... (I know winnt32.exe installs isn't officially supported with hfslip, but still hfslip nonetheless updates dosnet.inf ). I cannot use winnt.sif commands for that, as i have a D: partition additionally... Thanks in advance.
  9. Thanks for your reply, mate! Please note that i love your fileset as it is, and wasen't wanting you to change anything about it, but i was just interrested in knowing how much of IE was still present... I read on wikipedia that e.g. browseui.dll contains the gui for both IE and explorer, and that shdocvw.dll which explorer links to, is the actual IE webbrowser control etc. Although the article i read on the IE dll's where for IE6 i believe, so maybe it's different for IE5 i don't know... To be honest, then i was asking because i wanted to know if i really could say to ppl: "hey, guess what, I have IE removed on my system!", or if i instead should say "I have most of IE removed on my system, so IE is crippled!" You have done great work and of course i wouldn't want you to disassembe dll's, but i just was wondering since you stated many times on your site that IE was removed... Anyway, thanks for your reply! PS: When i said sorry for wasting your time on the MP3 Ds issue, then i wasen't reffering to me expecting that you allready where being troubleshooting the issue, but just for spending time reading my ignorant bug-report...
  10. To be honest, then this is the only part of hfslip that i have always wished could be done different, as i e.g. have 81 extra inf files in my i386 folder(only for updates and not counting the dx9 infs), and i only include high-priority updates and no optional or request-only ones. I know it's just a little under 4 megs, but it's just not as clean as i wished it could be... Please note that i know that it cannot be done differently with cmd syntax and without 3'rd party cmd tools, and just the fact that you made the whole thing automated is just brilliant IMHO Please don't think that this is a critique of your work in any way! CU, Martin.
  11. Hi there The pro. message was taken of in a later SP(can't remember why...). If you wan't the classic startup and shutdown screens, then run gpedit.msc and then somewhere there's an option for using the classic logon page instead of the new one(sorry i don't know the regtweak by heart, but you could also just search for it instead, if you don't wanna use gpedit.msc) CU, Martin.
  12. @fdv I'm REALLY sorry for wasting your time, fdv! I've just spend a couple of ours looking at procmon logs and reading up on DS source filters, and then i suddently saw a page which states that the default mp3 source filter of 2k/xp will not parse mp3's with big ID3v2.3 tags, and then i thought to myself that then it probably also could not support Id3v2.4 tags as that what i use, since foobar2000 only supports TXXX Id3v2 frames when using ID3v2.4 tags, and when testing it(changing tag type), then sure enough, that was the only issue and it worked now! Again, sorry about that mate! PS: I've been thinking about something, so could you please tell me about the following: Your fileset removes IE. On your site then you additionally state that to fully murder IE then some files needs edited for their reginst sections. I can understand that, but since the explorer shell and ie shares some of the same binaries, then aren't ie still not murdered completelly, but just crippled(mshtml.dll removed etc.) ? I mean the reginst sections can be removed, but the actual ie related function calls are still in the dlls right? (like browseui contains gui for both explorer and ie i'm guessing, and the ie control: Shdocvw.dll is also still in etc....) I know that from a security standpoint, then it's a non-issue, but i was just interested in it theoretically ? This seems to me as in that IE cannot be completelly removed, as else the OS gets borked, as msft themselves state, dosen't it? Just currious about it, and not thinking about security when i ask this
  13. When it's in the MSFN unattended guide, then don't you think they've tested it with that command before writing it... Anyway, many command-line utillities supports both /x and -x for their parameters... It didn't work for the OP because he used /quiet /norestart and neither -s /s or /integrate...
  14. No missing files... Sorry i don't know if it was in set 8k as i've never used it, but it was in set 8 g or h, can remember(last 8 set used)... I checked at the msdn site and it listed the msft ds filters and i wasen't sure which filter exactly it was that's needed, as the mpeg audio source filters only where listed to support layer 1 and 2 ? (as you know mp3 is layer 3), but there where a mpeg1 source filter, but it was listed as incorporated in quartz.dll like most of the others, but sounded like it was for video files.. anyway, don't stress it, mate!
  15. Just a small note to Win2k-fdv users... If using a DirectShow enabled program without inbuild filters, then MP3 files cannot play/decode... I noticed it when using ImgBurn and trying to burn an audio-CD from some MP3s, and where ImgBurn reported that there where a source filter missing. l3codecx.ax is in system32 allright, but it's the source filter that's missing(or maybe some reg-entries, as most filters is in quartz.dll)... Anyway, to make a long story short, then download Gabest mpeg-audio source/splitter filter and regsvr32 it as ussual with DS filters... http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli...310.7z/download @fdv: Maybe you could investigate this issue at some point, if/when having the time/motivation CU, Martin.
  16. Hint: The HFSLIP community has up-to-date update-lists for: Win2k-SP4, WinXP-SP3 and Win2k3-SP2: http://www.msfn.org/board/18-t126410.html
  17. @Ponch The command-line came from the msfn unattended guide here: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/v...87fbb8a1066134/ Sorry if it's wrong!
  18. I have previously used Nero(I used latest v6, as the newer versions where two bloated) to add an iso as second session to a cd-r left open with audio tracks on it... This is something that not many apps can do if the second session is an image, since the images LBA's needs to be corrected to new LBA's i.e. of the second session(to technical, just forget that...) Anyway, I'm not 100% sure, as i haven't tried it, but try the freeware ImgBurn(newer versions)... Go into 'write' mode and select 'create cue' and then add your audio files, and then select 'add a new session' or 'ctrl+s' and add the image...
  19. Sorry, i don't have nLite installed and i can't remember what the option specifically is named, but i now it's there... Anyway, this is the command to run for your setup: D:\DOWNLOAD\XPSP3.EXE -s:"D:\DOWNLOAD\WINXP SP1A" CU, Martin
  20. You can disable the creation of nLite logfiles under "Options" in nLite. Note, you only need to slipstream SP3 and not also SP2. Instead of using nLite you can also just open a command-prompt and run something like: xpsp3.exe -s:D:\Temp\XPCD Corp files i won't get into...

    Windows Updates

Thanks for your reply, mate! Cool to hear that you've "stabilized/fixed" the xp fileset! Myself, i had just spend a good month on making a nLite'd and BartPE'd(for formatting my C: drive unattendedly and loading the XP unattended setup) XP source just the way i wanted it, with tweaks and app-installs etc., but typically, then i've now begun to miss good ol' Win2k, and thought to myself to what purposse i was actually changing over to XP for, so i've wen't back to a nice FDV'd and hfslip'ed win2k yesterday... Anyway, i'm glad to see that you're still going strong on the hfslip development! CU, Martin.
  22. @fdv Just wanted to say thanks alot for set#9, it rocks! No problems that i could find and 32.5mb commit(where taskmanager itself is 2.5mb, so that's actually only 30mb commit!) Thanks again for all your great work! CU, Martin.

    Windows Updates

@Tommy I've just changed back to Win2k again, and this of course means using hfslip! (the xp hfcleanup fileset wasen't stable at the time i changed to XP...) Anyway, i just wanted to ask what the "Don't do it!" note of KB958470 relates to; is it the same as "Junk" or do you reffer to not using remote desktop in general (which i don't) ? Sorry for being dence Also, sorry for being off-topic, but while i'm posting to you anyway, then i noticed that i have an entry in 'add/remove programs' which states "Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4", and i didn't remember having that, last i used hfslip/win2k ? Hmm, maybe it's fdv adding that, since i'm using his latest fileset ? (i haven't looked at his INFs yet)... CU, Martin. Edit: Please ignore my second question: FDV: - free-av says "rollup must be installed" but it -is- so I'll have a look into what it thinks it wants at some point
  24. Oh, i'm sorry about that... I don't really know anything about this issue, so let's hope someone else can come to your rescue
