  1. I want to warn you guys. do not mess up with cracks around this forum. when you own official version of software you can say how to make it run on Win98SE legally. There are some principles which are allowing using some tools or some new code to run game properly, even if that code is not released oficially, but do not call it crack. Ad: Steam The technological differences between Win98 version of Steam and WinNT/2k/XP steams are again based (and only based) on adding "EX" exports, which are contained in XP kernel. These exports work very similar to their "nonEX" variants which are contained in win9x kernel, so i think that somebody is trying to spare some money or time during development (somebody is lazy). Also i have identified some new technological barriers in games - for example TES: Oblivion. I have hardware strong enough to run the game properly. In Windows 98SE the game runs quite slow, on Windows 2000 it runs faster. As some system modules are missing so the game "waits" for them, but it hangs for some time to. also Ultima Online (first and still active massive online game since 1996). Its executable module is nightmare. If you try to login while "uo.cfg" is present in "game/account" directory the system get BSOD regarding to afvxd.vxd. But if you erase uo.cfg the game will run correctly and uo.cfg will be restored from main game directory. and the worst - some installations are requesting system services which are not present in Win98Se, not even with KEX. Installations generate numerous error messages. i try to map one of those games. also i have tested Supreme Commander too. it is not connected only to missing exports, but to other system modules. i cannot say what exactly it needs.
  2. first of all check if your mobo drivers are working. try to reinstall them. also try to install newer driver. when all fails try to return system registry to day when the system was working.
  3. so somebody asked me to update the list... i will add some games that surely work, but i am still grateful for any help.
  4. as a respond to chit-chat about Chrome i tested some new soft: Opera Browser version 9.5 Still fully compatible with Windows 98SE (except one small error message regarding to msimg32.dll - fixed in a second)
  5. 1. You need an PATA DVD or CD drive. no matter if writer or read only. 2. It MUST have SPDIF/Digital output pin, and it MUST be active. be careful. some newer drives have this pin but it is disabled (there is written "reserved" instead of "digital audio") 3 You need a soundcard with SPDIF input/digital audio 3. You need a sw player After weeks of searching i found out that there is only one player able to work and it is Windows Media Player 9. Even Winamp version 5.2 failed n this... Also.. the newest winamp causes invalid page fault in its installer. bunch a crap... the sound works, but where can i found a better player?
  6. as long i know there is gain in the shader version. x850xt (i have one) has shaders 2.0. nv 8x00 have shaders 3.0 or 4.0 depending on model.
  7. so, i recently bought tv tuner card Pinnacle 300i which contains wdm driver able to work with Windows98SE. card is properly installed and the driver is working correctly. Analog section: i use program called ATV2000 by mike crash. this simple software offers all what any TV freak could use. here is the link: www.mikecrash.com captured image is very clear, for good work of this software it is needed to manual install some filters. Digital section: there is ATV3 on mike's page. it works not so much...still early beta. i also tried ProgDVB - it is very buggy and needs kernel ex. DVB Dream - able to scan, but it crashes when sound or video has to be displayed... with progdvb i was able to tune digital radio without trouble, but digi TV has no image... any tips? i think that progdvb is unable to start activemovie window... Edit: the suggested combination DVB-T for me is Pinnacle 300i - its driver works in win98se. the suggested codecs are FFDShow - newest possible, and Moonlight filter - necessary for ProgDVB. ProgDVB is the only application which worked for the said card in DVB-T mode for now. suggested verrsion is 4.85.3 IT WORKS
  8. i was trying to run any 24bit creative sound card but i think that it is impossible. but i was able to run WDM drivers intended for Audigy 1 so i get full surround support with them and also ASIO! i dont intend to break the VXD scenery here, but how can i link these drivers here? i dont believe that i have downloaded them - they were at brothers cd, and were later updated...
  9. more logos i hope and if possible also some icons. recently i learned how to make 8bit graphics more beautyful when transforming from 16 and 32bit color depth. just i dont have good bmp>icon converter but internet is full of them.
  10. well i dont like hw dependant software the main part of immolator project is compatibility and it works mainly with normal apps - thanks to all you guys... but it is quite annoying when new part of system has so big trouble with hardware... i hope you genius-minded programmers will fix it soon
  11. something veeery special is coming for you boys and girls http://slayershrine.wz.cz/logo3.gif
  12. tihyi, your wll has just frozen system three times in attempt to boot. this has not happen yesterday... something is very seriousliy wrong. without wll system will boot correctly always. also i the way how it affects buffers may be quite strange... The WLL by tihiy is my favourite. i need only bmp in its basical format, and no other manipulation. but in this phase all loaders are unusable
  13. I have tested again the logo loaders. tihiys wll.com version 10.03.08 buffers must be 30 or the wll will drop to dos dring bootup. logo is not crushed when Ati card blinks during bootup. Logo will sometimes cause system freeze during restart. but sometimes not... wbl graphically the most beautiful loader, but... with my current system settings it will always freeze system. also i still dont know how to make my own logo. svgacom i dont know how to fix the logos... seems to work correctly, but i am bit lazy to port my own bootlogo with special app... also the logo is crushed when ati card initializes.
  14. i have Ati x850xt. supreme performance and compatibility. i have tried nvidias, but it was not what i was seeking for.

Be careful When maxphyspage is not defined i get some bad symptoms. 1. Sound using Soundblaster LIVE was choppy during logon sound, later was good. 2. Farcry always gone BSOD when exiting 3. Some bugs in PCI bus visible in TV tuner with some Bios settings. it seems that without maxphyspage there were few hole bytes in memory which were not correctly assigned to system, so it was better turn them off system memory by maxphys limit.
  16. added Tomb Raider series.
  17. when it comes to stability Kernel Ex is very good. compatibility problems are with apps which are intended for XP... that is what kex is trying to solve. MSVCR 2008 is a group of DLLs which is intended to be XP only so KEX has to be used to fix it to installation process: i have extracted the MSI installer of vcredistx86, extracted it once again and then executed. the dlls were created in c:\ directory so i had to move them...
  18. Kernel Ex already solves dependencies from msvc 2008 files. few months ago i sucessfully installed those files and analyzed the dependencies. Xeno added them to Kernel Ex so there should be to problem in using MSVCR 2008 and newer apps linked with it. Only problem which i was unable to solve is to make installation of msvcr 2008 easier but when you created this topic i realized that it is quite possible that newest DX9 (and higher) files should be created with MSVCR 2008. So if somebody wish to install DX9 from may or july he has to have MSVCR2008 and latest kernel EX already installed. also... the DX9 installer from july and may has to be persuarded to work on Win9x and Win2k. For common gamers i still recommend the version from NOV 2007 which only requires DX9c Release 1 installed previously.
  19. i was able to installl vcredistx86 version 9 using winrar and msi installer inside. dependencies are ok, so i have to check the functionality. with latest kernel ex and manually installed VCredist 2008 i was able to run indigo. (different installation method - manual unpacking, setup execution, and copying msvc files to c:\win\system) this seems promising when it comes to installing the latest DX9...
  20. i am sure that most of them belong to rank 1 but i never play them
  21. there is a bit difference. people who need apps working need some information how to do it - even when it is complicated like erasing files or manipulating registers... If somebody wants to run game we can hardly create such information database, because no one will read it - they will rather use XP. so only solution for common lazy user shall be installation of kernel EX and nothing else - thats why i once refused to edit game executable to force it run - common users will not do that at all. also games can provide more information about differences between XP and 9x, since there is more games as other apps and they use system resources more intensly. so if the game shall not run the best way how to report it is to use dependency walker, analyze the dll exports and report the missing things. Games will show incompatibilities more with user32, gdi32, kernel, shell, directX but they will not use some interfaces such as Firefox 3 does. the matter is not same, at least not for me...
  22. please maintain the database of apps. i will maintaint the games database. it is quite important to distinguish if the game can be installed easily on any win9x system, or needs Kernel Ex, or if the game shall not run from different reasons (such as god damned steam).
  23. few months ago i bought HL2: EP1. during installation it required internet connection, steam installation and registration. since august 2007 is win9x not supported by steam so installation failed. Game itself is able to run in rank 1... i would like to separate games from other more usable software, just because for better searching in database...
  24. i have added some new games in list. i think that i can change version 0.3.2 to 0.3.5 without trouble
  25. Even XP has trouble with SATA drives. i think that depending on SATA driver it may cause trouble. driver is just not optimized well. also how big is disk you connected? maybe 137gig patch needs to be extended and included in vcache.vxd.
