  1. You're right, yeah, same name, same (no) password. Should I change that? EDIT: Ok, I created a new user account at the laptop with a different user name, I tried again to access the desktop and this time it asks for a username and password. I tried both the desktop's and laptop's user name (both have blank passwords) but after that I get the same message I did before. The desktop is still able to access the laptop's shared folders/files
  2. I have a desktop and a laptop, both connected to my Thomson Speedtouch ST585 wireless modem/router, the desktop via LAN and the laptop wireless. I want to share certain folders from my desktop to my laptop so that I can listen to my music and watch my movies/series by streaming them directly from the desktop instead of having to copy them to a usb stick or my (60gb) laptop's HDD. The desktop has Windows XP Pro SP3 (English) while the laptop Windows XP Home SP3 (Greek). I tried to setup a home network by using the Network Setup Wizard but it didn't work. Both PCs are now part of the same Workgroup and while they can both see each other only the desktop can access the laptop's shared folders. The laptop cannot and when I try to access the desktop directly (via clicking on the desktop's name under "View Workgroup Computers") I get an error saying that (and this is a rough translation from the Greek OS's message) access to the desktop was not possible; connection failure, user account limitations, this could be due to illegal blank passwords, time expirations or policy limitations). (BTW, on both PCs I only have a single user account with Administrator privileges). Could someone give me an idea of why this is happening and which PC's problem it is? BTW, I disabled windows firewall AND 3rd party internet security software on BOTH PCs just in case but little did it help...
  3. Erm, isn't registering EVERY dll in the system32 directory a tad extreme? I know this could be a sure solution but it could also spell unthinkable trouble. Just imagine some random old dll being left there from an incomplete uninstallation or update/upgrade... EDIT: Ah, sure enough, from a quick look I see several dlls that are of the type name.dll, name(1).dll, name(3).dll etc...
  4. That's weird. If I right click at a jpg image and select "set as desktop background" it SEEMS like it works but then there is no background at all, just the background color. However when I select a bmp image it works just fine (although it uses it in tile instead of stretching it to full screen) What's even more weird is that if I go under Display>Desktop>Background the image I tried to use is the one selected in the list and if I re-try to select it that way it works fine. Any ideas?
  5. Bump. Come on guys, anyone?!?! It's really annoying. I don't want a nLite based solution, any restore windows behavior technique will do!!!! Please!
  6. Hi, I have been running for a few months now a nLited WinXP system, almost everything works well except that for some reason windows cannot remember the individual folder view and keep reverting to the default view after a while (same session, no reboot)!!! Older, pre-XP folders that existed and had been managed from windows 98/ME retain their special view, it is the current folders (no use of a desktop.ini) that won't remember the last view used. Could you help me fix that without having to reinstall/repair windows which at the moment cannot afford to? I have attached the "Last Session (2006.12.23-02.09.03).ini" file. Hope that helps. Oh, another matter is that since I installed WMP11 the explorer no longer shows thumbnails or previews for the video files (avi, mpg/mpeg and wmv). Is that normal? All input is welcomed. Thanks in advance!
  7. Now... I don't know if this helps but I have the opposite problem... sorta... I made an installation, used WORKGROUP for workgroup, NEVER touched ANYTHING at the accounts tab. HOWEVER, having already read this thread BEFORE making my installation CD I alterred the WINNT.SIF some to resemble the one the previous versions created. So, the installation goes as planned (and at this point I must stress out that it WASN'T a test installation, I actually needed to install windows on my system and that was that), however, subsequently, when windows starts it auto logs on using the Administrator account!!! In order to log on to my account I have to manually log off and then log on... I attached the WINNT.SIF I used and the LAST_SESSION.INIs. So, happy hunting...

    Unsupported OS

I'm not entirely sure on that part... With nLite you don't need to use the WINNT.SIF. Furthermore for the TXT version you certainly won't need it since it is directly loaded at setup. However I am not sure if you need it for the PnP part of windows. If I had to guess I'd say that you don't, but I am not entirely sure. WINNT.SIF is only there when and if you need it. normally it should be in the I386 folder, if it isn't then you can create it with either of two ways (that is besides using notepad): even if you can't use nLite in general I don't think you'd have a problem just using the unattended setup part (that's where the WINNT.SIF is created.) The oher way is to use Microsoft's setupmgr.exe. You can find it in your windows CD, under SUPPORT\TOOLS\DEPLOY.CAB. Best of luck

    iPod Nano

(more off topic). Does Rockbox support AAC with iPod? How about for the other devices it supports? If so then we're back where we started. Will you buy an overpriced DAP for its' looks (that is IF you find it attractive which I certainly do not) or will you get yourself another RockBox-supported device instread for the same (or even better) functionality at a lower price? Just a thought (and I really think we should stop now before a Mod tells us off)
  10. Could you go to your i386 folder and post the WINNT.SIF file. Here is where all unattended options are stored.

    iPod Nano

Amen. (Well, I wouldn't call them crap for what they are, they're ok for anyone who woudn't mind buying an overpriced and generally lacking in such a degree that anyone with basic knowledge, common sense and the money for an iPod would buy an iAudio (or iRiver) or even a Zen (for less money but also less functionality, really people, OGG anyone?) if it meant having what is trendy (god I hate this word!!!) and "in". -Reality Check- Ok, well, for starters try various ways to install the drivers (including but not limited to the IPod CD as well as allowing windows to search for the drivers on line). Also I'd try FIRST installing iTunes and THEN installing iPod. Finally, if you removed WMP or legacy Audio/Video drivers then this is where I'd start looking for necessary components. Best of luck!

Ahh, yeah, I got that too following a different guide minutes before I found out about nLite!!! Basically you need to add the lines for each ID the device (controller) might have (or sth). That's why there's more than one. What applied to one of them applies to all. Luckily I also have the same controller so I can even supply you with the code I used and successfully tested! Feel free to test my code and see if it'll work for you! Good Luck!
  13. Ok, update people. Shark007's switchless installer for shockwave does indeed work. However there's a BUT. The first time I put it to my Add-on list in nLite and tried to test-install windows it gave me a message that another installation already was in progress and setup terminated (After me clicking ok). I tried again (integrating from scratch and then install) to make sure that this was no fluke but got the same message. In the end I found out that it was *probably* acting up because it was in the list for installation after other Adobe setups (namely Flash Player for both IE and Mozilla but it could also be the Reader, dunno). So, I made it install itself right after Firefox and put the rest of the Adobe products lower in the list. In conclusion, if you want to install it and also install the Flash player put the shockwave installer before the flash player one. That's all. And with that I finally have a Windows Setup CD just the way I want it. Now it's time to put it into practical use in various personalized situations. Cu!
  14. Erm... yeah, I don't have a problem to make an add-on (I use nLite Add-On Maker instead but same difference), I just couldn't make it to work silently... However I figured, why the hell won't the wizard let me DL the 5.5 version... So, I simply put a newer mouse model in the selector and bam, I got the 5.5 link. After that all was easy, the 5.5 FINALLY worked correctly (naturally it supported my mouse as well) and then I was able to follow spacesurfer's simple method, I just put "mm=3 /qr /norestart" as the switch and renamed/moved a couple of files since apparently, the msi installation doesn't read the language ini but instead assumes that the installation is for the english version but other than that worked perfectly so if anyone needs the same kind of help then I suggest you get the 5.5 version and follow spacesurfer's guide (or the post bellow his own where tresans suggests an alternate way by editing the oemsetup.ini (although I couldn't find that ini in the DL-able version)). Ok, guys, one problem solved, one more to check (see the shockwave issue for which Shark007 provided a solution) Later
  15. GREAT!!! One question though, will it work for both the IE and the Mozilla browsers and what is the firefox plug in? (or am I asking the same thing twice?)
  16. Hi, I have a MS IntelliMouse Optical (the basic one with the side buttons) and want to silently install the IntelliPoint setup. However I cannot for the life of me find how to do it. I spotted somewhere here a way fro the 5.5 version but this one doesn't work right. I have set the middle button for a Double-click, however, for several applications (usually games) I need the mouse button to be set for Auto-Scroll for them to properly detect it (with D-click they think the middle button is again a left click). With 5.0, there is no such customization, with 5.2 such customization is supposed to exist but it never worked for me. With 4.12 however everything works as it should and since mine is an older model it is supported by this version. So, if anyone knows how to silently install the 4.12 version OR knows how to make the 5.2 version work with the program-specific button settings let me know please! All input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!! (P.S. I KNOW there is at least a 5.5 version and maybe even a 6.0 but that freekin' MS Download wizard insists that I should get the 5.2... weird...)
  17. Strangest thing, I DL the Flash and Shockwave add-ons from the sticky but the only one that actually worked AT ALL was the "Macromedia_Flash_Player_IE.cab". All other simply did nothing. And since there already were newer versions I thought, what the hell... Ok, so (after some search for the msi) I got: "install_flash_player_9_active_x.msi" (v9.0.16.0) for the IE "install_flash_player.exe" (v9.0.16.0) for the Mozilla and "Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe" (v10.1.3.18) for both browsers. Ok, after some tampering I found out that the switches for the silent mode were: install_flash_player_9_active_x.msi /quiet install_flash_player.exe /silent Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe /silent No surprises there. Tested them all, uninstalled and ran them again and checked again if everything was in order... However I don't feel safe with a homebrew add-on until I actually test it (using VirtualPC since Microsoft made it available for free ) and yes ladies and gentlemen, we have a problem! For reasons beyond my comprehension when the time comes for Shockwave to be installed the "do you want to also install the Google (or Yahoo, I'm not entirely sure) bar" question pops up and freezes the installation until I answer, after which answer IE is started up to visit the Installation Complete web page!!! This NEVER happens to me when I silently install it on an already working system but ALWAYS happened when the same silent switch is used for the Add-On!!! Until one of those "what if" questions popped into mind. Without altering the iso I loaded it in the same VM I had tested all the other times only this time, I had disabled the virtual network card (i.e. no internet connection). Oddly enough this time there was no message for the Google (Yahoo?) Bar. There was that same browser pop up (although it said that there was no connectivity) but this didn't affect the installation in the least after which the system rebooted to load windows and there was no trace of it... So, two questions, why does it only happen when installing windows and does it also happen with the slim version of the installation? (Remember, I used the full). And will it matter in a real setup where the network card drivers aren't yet installed (or are they?). This kind of questions I'm going to explore (After a LONG period of sleep which I deprived myself for several hours) unless some of you already know the answers... Any independent tests will probably be useful, I made my add-ons using the very easy "nLite Add-On Maker" v1.2.4.2006. Nothing is simpler. Okay, happy huntin'! (for us all...)
  18. Packages, I want to use my packages for multiple installations, however, if the start menu\programs path doesn't change then I'm fine. If it does, worst case scenario, I'll need to make two different packages, I don't work for the EU or sth Thanks though, you've been really helpful both of you, appreciate it! Cu
  19. Nope, already tried this, it doesn't work.Ahh, this will work fine, I'd like to know how you did it though, I was trying to do the same thing (add a shortcut in the start menu actually and didn't know how, ended up manually adding it with a 2nd SFX (and finally activated both using a batch file, not very ellegant I know but it worked...) Thanks, both of you!
  20. Ok, will do but the3 message wasn't that the file was corrupted but that was missing altogether. Right now I'm using nLite for integration and everything works just fine. If that helps I also added several home brew packages and my SATA/RAID drivers in TXT mode and all of my nForce2 drivers in PnP. However I think that the whole thing blows when I choose to re-package the cabs under options. Right now I'm looking into some minor anomalies for my final build after which I'll be ready for the real thing (yeah, I was working towards a specific system, not for kicks (not THIS time that is... ) ). Once this is out of the way I can test till I drop
  21. Wow, set, that simple... I'm impressed... THANK YOU A LOT, both of you!!! I'll check that one later. See ya!!!
  22. Hi, I just started making custom installation CDs to save me from the pain of installing all those programs I need whenever a clean install (or helping a friend) is in order. For that reason the problem of knowing more "relative paths" other than %SystemDrive%, %WinDir% / %SystemRoot%, %UserProfile% and %ResourceDir% (whenever that last one decides to work) becomes more painfully apparent. Right now AT THE VERY LEAST I need to know the relative path for: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs Sure, using %SystemDrive% instead of C:\ (or the crazier "%UserProfile%\..\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\") probably is safe to use for almost any EN Windows based scenario, however I encounter Windows installations in a different language and thus the need to know the relative path for the above is evident... So, if you have a document, a URL or the general knowledge to help me that would be great. All help is greatly appreciated!
  23. Depends, At one time I used the same installation for almost 2 years (!!!) other times I did an installation after a few months. Generally, as I got more accustomed to the nature of WinXP (and more importantly, when I FINALLY accepted the fact that Norton IS (2005) hasn't been ANY good, except for screwing up your system BADLY with no good reason, and switched) I've been able to keep my installations longer. BTW, my current system has been around since December the 1st, 2005 (when I got my new 250 SATA II WD Chaviar SE16 ), that makes it about 8 months old, in these 8 months I rarely shut it down/rebooted it (I leave my PC open 24/7 for downloads ) and I still have no problems (other than the apparent fact that I need more than my lousy 512 MB RAM but I don't want to update but rather upgrade my system when the time is right...). So, in general I feel that WinXP (Pro) can be a truly stable system if you treat them nicely
