  1. Just an update ... A few more updates than on the first post in this thread. Still the same problem with Windows Search, and it's subsequent update: "WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-enu.exe /Quiet /NoRestart" "WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB963093-x86-ENU.exe /Quiet /NoRestart" Also WGA (KB905474) seems to now require interactive installation. After install, only KB940157 and KB905474 are listed as needed by Windows Update. note, though probably metioned elsewhere: Hotfixes have changed their numbering scheme, now consisting of KB followed by seven digits, starting with 2. The above SVCPACK.INF has the advantages of using all the most complete versions of the file, thus the $hf_mig$ folder is kept to it's minimum, and the hotfix uninstall folders are (for the most part) avoided.

  4. Typo indeed. TermService was intended. In any event the NET STOP/START commands are invalid for this service, even on an up and running XP. Obviously, i would prefer not to start a bunch of services. I was hoping for a little registry entry that either instructed the program to install anyway, or fooled it into thinking all the prerequisites had been met. Installing after the final reboot is a valid solution, but right now my efforts are concentrated on doing it from SVCPACK.INF. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Due to this, when checking Windows Update, one optional update (Windows Search 4.0) is available. I also noticed another downside to installing IE7 from SVCPACK.INF, that subsequent updates fail (some of you reported related errors above). After an up and running version of XP installed this way needs to update IE7, the update will fail. This is due to the fact that dllcache contains files from IE6, and not the updated IE7. You can either delete the offending files (no, I do not have a list), or replace them with the IE7 versions. Also, a re-installation of IE7 corrects the problem. Using this SVCPACK.INF, and the associated executable files, there should be no need to use a third party XP Installation software. I can only believe that if you cannot, it must be a case of operator error. If you run into errors, insure that you have a clean XP installation source, preferably from a CD, with a properly integrated SP3, and nothing more. Then update the SVCPACK.INF file, and add the i386\svcpack directory and files. Then run a normal attended install. 6. I am trying to install Windows Search (WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-ENU.exe) from SVCPACK.INF during Windows XP SP3 installation. The unattended command line, WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-ENU.exe /Q /NoRestart, works fine in an up and running XP installation. From SVCPACK.INF, the command silently fails: no error message and Windows Search NOT installed. The log file, KB940157, reads as such: 00:00.000: ======================================================================= 00:00.070: INFO: Opening log for preliminary WDSSetup.exe actions 00:00.070: Started: 2008/10/14 (Y/M/D) 01:00:00.000 (local) 00:00.080: Command line: /Q /NoRestart 00:00.090: INFO: Closing down log for WDSSetup.exe logging When run from SVCPACK.INF with no installation switches, in order to elicit an attended install of Windows Search during XP installation, an error message box appears with the text "Setup has failed. Make sure Terminal Services are enabled before re-running setup." Indeed, Terminal Services is not yet started, and the installation fails, by design. My question is, has anybody succesfully installed Windows Search during XP installation, preferably using SVCPACK.INF? Or does anyone have any suggestions how to either start the service (No, NET START TERMSERVICES does not work ...), or fool WDSSetup.exe into installing anyway?
  7. In the never ending search for the complete, up to date Windows XP Installation, here is my latest SVCPACK.INF, used to install all the updates and hotfixes for Windows XP Service Pack 3. This list of updates and hotfixes are those I have determined to be necessary to show Zero Updates needed, High Priority or Recommended, in Windows Update. One major obstacle is finding the hotfixes. I use a combination of standard hotfix downloads from Microsoft, inspection of WindowsUpdate.log for update URLs, and NirSoft's SmartSniff to detect from where the hotfixes are downloaded. Please do the same to find your own hotfixes, and do not bother asking me for direct download links ... Two problems discussed here and on other forums is how to install the .Net Frameworks (1.1 and 2.0), and the IE7 Updates from SVCPACK.INF. This is the only part of the installation that requires "smoke and mirrors". For .Net, the file REG.EXE is extracted from the Windows source, and included in the SVCPACK folder. From there it is used to change two entries in the Windows registry to allow the installation of .Net 2.0. The .Net installers for .Net 1.1 and 2.0 have been renamed to DOTNET11 and DOTNET20, respectively. Oddly enough, .Net 3.0 and 3.5 do NOT show up as needed on Windows Update, but I suspect that will soon change. The second problem was to allow the updates to IE7 to succeed. This was achieved by using REG.EXE again to add an entry into the registry to allow the update to run as if a Windows Update installation of IE7 was being performed. After the update is installed, the registry setting is deleted. 8. @Bitfrotter: Correct me if I am wrong, but your posts have led me to believe you are using XPCREATE in a commercial environment. Is that correct? I will not be updating this SVCPACK.INF any longer, as I have moved on to SP3.
  9. @giarc: Yes, this works on an attended install, as well as an unattended. You have the wrong switches, or the wrong update file for the hotfix that is prompting you for an extraction path. You could try a quiet installation, as opposed to an unattended installation, and then you should have more luck finding the culprit. To do so, change all the /Q /U /O /N /Z to /U /O /N /Z, and the /Q:A /R:N to /Q:U /R:N. Integration using the /integrate switch will result in a larger installation source, as the updates are still run as shown above, but unpacked files will then replace packed files in the i386 directory of the installation source. The hotfixes are already compressed as distributed. Using makecab will not result in significant savings, just as compressing an .mp3 file does not reduce the files size very much.

  13. Personally ... I like the simple approach. "I would like to check in a cmd if a file was deleted or not ". I read that to mean that if it still exists, it was not deleted, no? Am I missing something here?
  14. @smilodn: This list is for XP Pro. Forgot to mention that ... @Yzöwl: I suspect that the SVC-IEU (IE Updates) files that did not install are due to not including the IE7 iexplore.ex_ in your I386 installation directory. WIthout this, the IE Updates will think that IE6 is installed, and not install. That is one of the "smoke and mirror" tricks I needed to use. @spitf1f3: Perhaps it will work for both Home and Pro: I never use nor test the Home version. It takes quite a while to install this way, but most of the time is for .Net, which is unavoidable unless you find a method to slipstream .Net (which I would neither trust nor try, but to each their own ...). To me the extra time is worth it, as I an sure to have a reliable installation, and save the time hunting down bugs left behind by non-orthodox "shortcuts". If I am really in a hurry to get an installation done, which I never seem to be ... I just start it a half hour earlier! @Neo - Matrix: I have not tried other languages, but I assume most, if not all, of the files will install fine. I also have not tested RunOnceEx, but as the latest IE updates are installed, I would bet it works. If not, there is always the option to adjust the RunOnceEx flags so that no status boxes are shown, and that has been documented to work by both Microsoft, and others on this board. As for the three updates you cannot find (ROOTSUPD.EXE, WIC_X86_ENU.EXE and XPSEPSC-X86-EN-US.EXE), I do not remember where I got them, and I am not in my lab (nor will I be for at least another month), but I do know that all the files listed are downloadable as such: no extraction is required, I do not know how English .Net would work on PT-BR Windows. You will just have to test it ... SP3, as I last saw it, does NOT include IE7. @DarkShadows: I did my tests with .Net 3.0 + updates. Yzöwl, I believe, from what he posts here, did use the 3.5 package. As I mention in the first post, the WebClient service appears to work just fine, though I have not tested it, as such. But in many tests, the service was perpetually in the "Starting" state. With the SVCPACK.INF file posted that was NOT the case, which was conclusive enough for me. Also, as I stated, and you repeated, the order DOES seem to be the key. The same files in different orders tested had the WebClient service listed as "Starting". So now, "To the best of your knowledge", there is a way to install .Net 3,0 (and perhaps 3.5, I cannot vouch for that), from SVCPACK.INF WITHOUT breaking the WebClient Service (which was the main reason I posted this). I also see that you have been busy writing up a few guides. Keep up the good work! They look clear and easy to follow. As for me, I left home for a 2 week trip about a month ago, and it looks to be another month before I return. At that point, I will try to update my SVCPACK.INF to include .Net 3.5, and the latest updates. Until then: Good Luck!
  15. Yes, I do have it ... And you can find it, too! I assume you already looked in C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log. If you do not find it there, go to NirSoft (www.nirsoft.net), and download SmartSniff. Start SmartSniff, and let Windows Update download the file(s) in question. Now, examine the streams tracked by SmartSniff, and you will find the link(s)!
