View that status bar baby!

It's been a long and difficult process for many, and quite often we've all thought we found it, but in the end, it just didn't work (and I'm hoping I've found it this time).

Here it is. The real status bar enabled tweak in Windows XP Pro! (tested on SP2 RC1).

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
;Enable status bar in Windows Explorer[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]"StatusBarOther"=dword:00000001

I have confirmed this on my own machine with a Virtual PC 2004 installation, however, to really make sure this is true, could a few other people please check it out too?

Cheers :)

Total changes:1 (the 24 on first line changed to 34)

because it accesses the Users settings, is it possible to make a registry file to do this?

Maybe this is related to the difficulties of finding the reg key (dunno i don't use the explorer) :

1.

The BUG (status bar disappearing) is caused by a missing registry entry in a new installation of XP. If you nuke the entire Explorer preferences section of the registry, and recreate it by applying your preferences all over again it usually fixes the problem.
2.
How to retain the Status Bar

If your status bar disappears when opening a new IE 6 browser window:

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar

2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"

3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)

4) Open Windows Explorer, click View, select: Status Bar

5) Right-click on Explorer's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"

6) Click Tools | Folder Options | View tab

7) Click the "Apply to all folders" button.

8) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)

9) Open IE to any page, right-click on a link and select: "Open in New Window"

10)Verify that these Registry entries exist:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

"Show_StatusBar"="yes"

"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

anyway, how the hell can such a setting be imported? the S-1-5.... number will change every time won't it?

when i did my registry compare, only the one key had been modified

You guys are starting to worry me ... I've had details view and status bar for a long time: I never realized there was a problem ... I'm convinced the key is under that listed below, as I do not import the other keys mentioned.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams]
My Explorer starts up as in the attached image: Status Bar, Details View.

Works for me:

EDIT: Watching the registry for these changes is futile: the values are not actually saved until you log off, and when you log on next time, there are so many changed values that registry tracking becomes quite difficult. I have written about some of this in the RAMBLINGS section of the GreenMachine Web Site ( http://greenmachine.msfnhosting.com )

LOL. I actually exported that [HKCU....Streams] key and haven't been able to get the Statusbar to show back up after reboot. I'm about ready to test my latest Unattended CD (using xpcreate, Btw. Great utility GM!) and I'm going to uses that reg export and see if it works.

I did use Reg Snap to compare the differeneces with and without the Statusbar. After turning the statusbar on, I applied that setting to all Folders from tools>folder options>view. Here are the differences minus the ShellBrowser\ITBarLayout key:

HKU\S-1-5-21-299502267-436374069-1957994488-500\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Settings: 08 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 E0 D0 57 00 73 35 CF 11 AE 69 08 00 2B 2E 12 62 04 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 43 00 00 00

Should work ... unless there is something else reseting it afterwards. You should change the HKU\S-1-5-21-299502267-436374069-1957994488-500 value to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. These are identical on the tested machine, but the S-1-5-21-299502267-436374069-1957994488-500 will not be the same on a new installation. In general, you NEVER want to use the HKU\GUID combination during installation. You must also import these from CMDLINES.TXT or BEFORE, if not, the current values will overwrite your imports on logoff.

Thanks for the info. I actually did import the HKCU key and not the other. All my Reg Tweaks are called from RunOnceEx which is called from cmdlines.txt. Guess I'll have to change that for some of my tweaks.

Cheers,

Good Tip about registry changes.

So any HKCU settings need to be done from cmdlines.txt or before?
