samene Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 After hearing that more and more people stopped using antivir apps I decided to take it to the extreme and cut out all security on my Xp innstallation. I dont have much sensetiv information on this computer but some projects going, just enough to get the feeling of loss and that my balls are one the line. No pain no fun. I did not know what was going to happen but after 1,5 months now I am suprised to say that my pc is as clean as ever, runs very smoothly and boots faster than I see on newer pc's. My conclusion is that my Nlited Xp combined with an effective setup of firefox addons is enough to keep the big dangers on the internet away. And I have traveled the web with this setup to test it further. I have seen porn I didnt know exist, and downloaded cracks I dont need, and tried to make a mess, but unsucsessfully so. The reason I post is that I think I have unrevealed the 20 minuts and your infected myth, but I dont understand why. Any thoughts out there? My Pc: Pentium 4 512 Ram 4500/700 broadband connectionScanned the pc with theese apps:Antivir: Nod32, avg7, Kaspersky, Avast, Antivir, Bitdefender, ClamwinAntiSpy: A-squared, spybot, ad-aware, ewido, superantispyware, windows defender, hijackthis, cwshredder, rootkitrevealerI have also used Netpeeker to keep a close watch on my internet connections, but with no irregularities. I guess closing my eyes and pretending I had linux installed worked.
poetfreak Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 I think it has far more to do with a good firewall, firefox and NoScript and ABP extensions (and peerguardian in my case). I have done the same thing. It does run a little faster to, but you have to know what your doing so I would never recommend this on a computer with personal information on it. Do you do your banking on that setup ?
samene Posted June 16, 2007 Author Posted June 16, 2007 I have tried peerguearian but cut it out for this experiment...Forgot to mention which firefox extensions i run:Adblock.filterset.GAdblockAutoCopyClear Text FieldsCustomize GoogleCuteMenusDownload StatusbarFasterfoxFlashGotMediaplayerconnectivityPlainText tolinkTabMixPlusI dont have a firewall at all. And when it comes to banking there is no worry. I live in Norway and every time I log into my accounts I have to type in a code I recieve on my mobile. So I dont have any problem using this setup at all.
Biohead Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 I'm one of the people who says it's perfectly acceptable to run without security, as long as you know exactly what you're doing and where you go. However, the risk of encountering a virus these days is increasingly high, so it's always good to have some form on.But you're just another of example of if you're careful, you can be fine.

I am carefull but for this experiment I went banans. I took forum advice and did the exact opposite. When someone said I shouldnt go to allivie, I subscribed to allavie. I did the f***ing opposite, and I'm clean!!!!!! Explain that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Madhits45 Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I'm not surprised. The nlite setup strips out a lot of what some spywear, viruses and other bad stuff need to run. Without the normal windows junk that they have come to know and love how can a virus writer make something that works in your case.I have for months even yrs run without a firewall and i have never had a virus scanner. I have been hit by viruses about two times in 10 yrs.
RJARRRPCGP Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 You probably didn't get a virus right after connecting to the internet, because you have broadband and the modem has NAT. My ADSL modem has that and it's fine without a software firewall! I tested it with Shields Up! and all of the ports were stealthed.
